  • Apple Defender/Virus Website

I was looking through some images on Google, and all of a sudden a page opened calling itself Apple Defender.  I was unable to close the page or even close Safari. I force quit Safari, then reset Safari/emptied the cache.  I checked the downloads area on my Macbook Pro (2010) and it does not appear that anything went there.  The screen said I had 24 trojan horse viruses, among other things!  This is the FIRST time anything like this has opened on my Mac.
Anyone know anything about this?? Thanks!

None!  There are NO viruses that can affect OS X.
As far as anyone "hacking" into your computer, make sure your Firewall is turned on.

You got Feven extension or similar. You need to clean your extension list or scan with anti-malware program. Also, many of your ad-ons look suspicious.

My Macbook is keep popping out those advertisement and those virus website  . Watching online drama is also very lag , how can i fix these problem ? Mac Pro Os x 10.9.5

Click here and follow the instructions, or if there’s a type of adware not covered by them on the computer, these ones. If you're willing to use a tool to remove it(you don't need to, but may find it easier), you can instead run Adware Medic; this link is a direct download.

  • WRT54GS V.6 Issue/help!!!

Alright i have an issue where my wireless router is blocking microsoft and anti-virus websites from d/ling. Also cannot d/l updates for any programs that are connected to mircosoft in anyway. I thought it was a virus but that went away once i cleaned out my whole pc, thought it was my internet provider but since everything works fine if i connect the enternal cord directly to my pc. My internet is from comcast and i have been having this problem for months now. Is there anyway i can fix this issue?

Man I thought for sure the Act light would be out for sure....
Unless you have a really complicated network set up at your house I would just do a hard reset and see if that fixes it.
Hold the reset button for 30sec and unplug the power cable for 1min, Then reconfigure the router the way you like it.
Default username and password is "admin" if that does not work leave the username blank and put "admin" in for password.

I guess I put all info at top, sorry. Websites are displaying strange. When I use firefox they come up normal. Do I have flashback virus? what do I do to correct problem.

Thank you both for responding . After my posting I kept digging, I now know I don't have flashback. But, as to the strange part the pdf will  show. Before problem that started about 2 weeks ago. The content was spread across the web page now it's all to the left going straight down. Also each action I get a slow script message and action is only completed when I hit cancel.

  • I visited a website on my iPad and just found out the website has viruses

A few days ago I visited a website on my iPad. I visited the same website on my computer today and while on the website, a message from my virus scanner popped up saying it is blocking two potentially harmful malicious threat. I then scanned my computer and two malicious virus were found.
I am concern if my iPad is going to get the viruses also. how do I check or know for sure my iPad is safe from harmful viruses?

Yes my computer is a PC. Nothing to worry about is good news.
Except now I am having problems with my PC. Any chance anyone can help me out with this? So my Microsoft Security essentials scanner detected two threats and a pop up telling me it has blocked and suspended the threats. Then it asked me to clean my computer by restarting. I did that. Scanned my computer again, once  i restarted it, and the scan found another threat. I decided to let it scan completely before fixing any problems. Except half way through, the scan no longer detected the threat and once the scan completed, it said it found nothing.
So then I surf the Internet (this time clicking only on reliable sites), the microsoft security pops up again saying the same thing (detected threat, blocked and suspend it). I cleaned my computer again.
Re-scanned the computer (without visiting any sites) and the scan detected another threat. I can't seem to get rid of it.
What should I do? All I know is that the scan says it found this - trojan:win32/sefnt
    Is this bad?

  • I have not been able to find any information re: the Flashback virus and Apple remedies on the Apple website.  Am I missing something?

I have not been able to find any information re: the Flashback virus on the Apple website.  Has Apple put out anything on this?

    The ‘Flashback Trojan’:
A version of an existing Trojan Horse posing as a legitimate Flash Player installer (named “Flashback.A” by a security firm) is designed to disable updates to the default Mac OS X anti-malware protection system, potentially leaving the system open to the manual installation of other malware without any system warnings. The most recent versions bypass any user action and automatically installs itself after an affected website is visited.
    http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/10/19/fake_adobe_flash_malware_seeks_to_ disable_mac_os_x_anti_malware_protection.html
(Adobe is aware of malware posing as its Flash Player and warns users to ignore any updates that didn't originate on its own servers. "Do not download Flash Player from a site other than adobe.com," said David Lenoe, Adobe's product security program manager, in an entry on Adobe Product Security Incident Response Team's PSIRT blog. "This goes for any piece of software (Reader, Windows Media Player, QuickTime, etc). If you get a notice to update, it's not a bad idea to go directly to the site of the software vendor and download the update directly from the source. If the download is from an unfamiliar URL or an IP address, you should be suspicious.")
Flashback Trojan - Prevention of infection:
In order to prevent a potential infection with “Flashback” Trojans, Mac users should always obtain their copy of Adobe Flash Player directly from Adobe’s official website and to disable the "Open 'safe' files after downloading" option in Safari Preferences/General to avoid automatically running files downloaded from the Internet. Also, do not turn on Java in Safari Preferences/Security. Few websites use Java. Javascript is something entirely different and should be left active.
The Flashback Trojan does not affect PPC (non-Intel) Macs, nor has it been noted to affect users running Tiger OS 10.4.11 or Leopard OS 10.5.8.
Last, but by no means least, using Open DNS is the simplest way of preventing infection in the first place. Open DNS also protects against phishing attacks, re-directs, speeds up your internet connection, and works for all users of OS X from Tiger upwards:
    http://blog.opendns.com/2012/04/09/worried-about-mac-malware-just-set-up-opendns /
    How to get it:
    https://store.opendns.com/get/home-free
Flashback Trojan - Detection and Removal
Users with Intel Macs running Snow Leopard OS 10.6 or Lion OS 10.7 should ensure that they have downloaded all the recent Java updates from Apple, which are designed to prevent infection and also remove any infection already present.
New Macs running Lion do not have either Flash Player nor Java installed. If you running Lion and have not already downloaded and installed Java, you should download the ‘Flashback malware removal tool’ from Apple:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5246  (356KB) which includes the same code as the Java update that plugged a security hole which allowed the malware to automatically install itself without admin authorization.
You can also use this to check whether you have been infected (for Intel Macs only) and remove it if required:

  • The best tool for determining which website to visit - and not getting a virus.

    www.mywot.com/
This browser add on is community serviced - and free. What it does is it has a database of user reviews of websites - to determine if people have had problems with the website (adware, virus's, false information, etc). If it is a RED rated site, you'll get a huge popup telling you so, and why. It also places rings next to website links with a green, yellow or red coloring - letting you know if it's safe to click.
This protects a lot of people who are uncertain, stumbling around on the internet. Ok, it also protects people who are more advanced that just plain arn't paying attention, LOL
Best Buy obviously does not endorse this tool, etc - this is just my personal opinion. But use it

Great suggestion Red. I think you made it clear it wasn't fool proof and I doubt any of the av tools is going to anything above and beyond the info you are going to get from this kind of free tool.

  • Can iPhone be infected with a virus while accessing websites through a third party app?

Hi there all, while accessing a newly found video website via a third party app on my iPhone 5, a window suddenly appears saying "your iPhone has been infected by a virus" and then gave a link to click "to prevent further damage from happening."   I chose to ignore the message since it's always been my understanding that iPhones are relatively impervious to viruses, however, since the pop up was now preventing me from doing anything else with the app, I just closed out the application entirely then rebooted the phone (just to be safe) and it's been working fine ever since.   I suspect this pop up was a fear based ploy intended to scare me into clicking the link being provided.  Am I correct, or is it actually possible for a virus to infect an iPhone just by going to an unscrupulous website without even downloading a file?   I haven't opened or done anything with this third party app ever since.   btw, my iPhone 5 is running iOS v8.1.2 and I've never had any issues with it in the past.  If anybody can answer it would surely be appreciated, many thanks!

Several years ago, my oldest brother was stupid enough to let himself be duped into being a major participant in a personal situation having a direct impact upon me.  Prior to the rift that developed which ultimately tore our relationship apart, I suggested we meet for lunch one day as all I was wanting was for him to be honest with me.   Feeling guilty and hating all confrontation, he just had to get out of there, and so instead of answering my question he jumped up and shouted "YOU'RE ALWAYS DOING THAT TO ME!!" right in front of everyone at the restaurant.  As a tension breaker I shouted right back, "didn't YOU ever learn the word ALWAYS should NEVER be said during an argument?"   And so yes, you're right, I should have qualified my question more by saying "relatively impervious" instead.   MY BAD!!    I still want to say "THANKS" anyway for providing such a quick and accurate answer!

  • Can my AVG anti-virus check on websites be re-enabled?

My anti virus program, AVG, was checking each website as I accessed them. It also checked the sights as I posted them in the Google program.
When I downloaded Firefox version 5, that feature was disabled. If it can be restored, I'll download 5 again. Otherwise I'll use version 4, or go back to another browser. I don't want to have to do that, because I like Firefox.

Currently there's no known virus affecting iPad as long as you don't Jailbreak your iPad.

  • Hi everybody, I am in Turkey on a long assignment, I need help solving a big problem on my macbook pro os 10.9.3. The other week my wife visited some website and now we have a redirect virus of some sort, and every other time when we click

Hi everybody, I am in Turkey on a long assignment, I need help solving a big problem on my macbook pro os 10.9.3. The other week my wife visited some website and now we have a redirect virus of some sort, and every other time when we click on a link or anywhere on the page we are redirected to this casino web site, https://casino.7bets10.com/tr/?from=hy9yKXD43jSC-8Oxbw4femNd7ZgqdRLk-dHJpeG9uaXR l. Its the same whether on Chrome or Safari. Does anyone have a solution, thank you!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
Paste into the window of another application.
Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.
