VMWare Fusion - Cannot see other computers in the Workgroup

For some reason I'm unable to see or access other machines in my Windows Workgroup from within Fusion 1.1.3. Alternatively, I cannot see or access the VM from other WinXP machines in my workgroup. The other WinXP machines in my workgroup CAN at least ping the VM. I cannot ping anything outside of the VM other than OS X and my gateway/router. And yes, I've tried disabling the firewall on both the VM and other Windows machines in my Workgroupto no avail.
I am currently using a Bridged network configuration in Fusion. If I open an explorer window in the VM and type in the UNC path to OS X I can access it, but not other Windows machines on my network... why?
Perhaps someone can at least confirm whether they can access/see other computers in their Workgroup from Fusion?
Maybe this simply isn't possible under Fusion and I'm just going around in circles here...
Thanks

How did you resolve this? I am about ready to toss my month-old macbook out the window over this.

  • I'm seeing other computers "in the network"

    Hi, all.
I am seeing other computers, I assume picked up by the wireless internet connection, or something.
I wonder if they can "see" mine in theirs?? I'm quite concerned by this
If so, how do I "block" that, so that my computer doesn't show up in other people's networks. I don't want to "share" folders, or anything.
    Thanx !

Look in the Airport (or wireless router) preferences: you should be able to create a 'closed' network, i.e. one which doesn't broadcast its name and thus doesn't show up in the lists of networks on other computers. You should also set a WPA encryption and a safe password: and you can restrict access to your network to computers with specific MAC addresses (this is the address of the wireless card, nothing to do with Macintosh). Asa already said, you have to have File Sharing turned on before anyone can get into your computer (and they would need the account password).

  • New Router- Internet OK, but cannot see other machines on the network with Windows Explorer

Everything was fine (but slow) with my old Linksys BRFW1154.  Ordered and got a new WRT350N.  Multiple computers (using Windows XP) on network can all access the internet and the network printer, but when I try to use Windows Explorer to see files etc on other computers (in My Network Places) from any computer, I no longer can see the other computers. I get the error: "Workgroup is not accessible.  You might not have permission to use this ........etc....".
Any ideas out there as to how I get my network working again?

check whether all the computers can ping each other fine...also, the computers should be in the same workgroup

    Welcome to Apple Discussions:
I've already turned my SMB in System Pref/Sharing
That won't do anything. That only allows sharing From Mac To PC.
additional information, sometimes, i was able to but see sometimes i wasn't, depends on my luck.
Maverick says Luck has nothing to do with it
    router ip 192.168.2.1
    target PC 192.168.2.2
Can you ping the PC? That's the first step. In other words, can you see it on the most basic level?
    Open a terminal and enter
    ping 192.168.2.2
if that's the PC in question.
If you get a non-null response you are half-way there.
On the PCs, be sure you have file sharing turned on and also be sure you choose simple file sharing.
On the Mac, in the Finder Go menu, enter the IP of the PC where it says "Connect to Server" and you should get a login window. Enter the user id and password for an existing account on the PC.
That usually takes care of it.
    pls help.

  • Can't see other computers on network through wireless/wired OK

Our wireless clients that connect through our AP541N cannot see other computers on the network.  They can ping other computers by IP and host name and access the internet OK.  Mapped network drives can be connected initially but are very unreliable and always end up disconnecting.  Restarting the computer does not help.  When these computers are wired they see the network as expected.  Does anyone know why my wireless network would behave differently then the wired?  The wired and wireless networks are on the same VLAN.  The wireless clients are all Windows 7 systems. Thanks.

    Hi Andy,
Thank you for posting. Go to Wireless Network Setup (VAPs) and see if Station Isolation is enabled for the SSID in question. From the Help menu:
When Station Isolation is disabled, wireless clients can communicate with one another normally by sending traffic through the AP.
When Station Isolation is enabled, the AP blocks communication between wireless clients on the same VAP. The AP still allows data traffic between its wireless clients and wired devices on the network, across a WDS link, and with other wireless clients associated with a different VAP.

  • E3000: RE networking with other computers on the local network

Successfully installed an E3000 (internet and printer work) but cannot see other computers on my local network which are wired into the router, including my server.. I have read a bunch of messages but cannot find an answer. Thank you in advance

Usually when windows 7 computers are on the same LAN, they'll automatically tell you if another computer has already setup a homegroup. After making sure that upnp was kept enabled, delete any homegroups in all of the computers, then make a homegroup on one of the computers. When you go to create a homegroup on the other computers, they should tell you that one has already been created by another computer and to join that one. • XP/Pro box doesn't see other computers on network after running CiscoConnect on it

Got a new E4200 on September 13 to provide internet and networking to a small business network.
There are 2 wired computers, one an XP/pro and the other a Win 7/64 bit.  Both worked straight out of the box in that  both had access to each others' files after plugging them into the E4200.  Two other wireless computers were connected using CiscoConnect, one a Vista and the other a Win 7, and all was fine.  All computers were able to see each others' file. Also managed to get a wireless Canon printer working even though CiscoConnect wasn't able to find it.
After I realized I didn't run CiscoConnect on the XP, I did so using the USB key created on the Win7 box and the result was that the XP box doesn't see any of the other computers although all the other computers can see the XP files.  After uninstalling CiscoConnect on the XP and rebooting, the XP can't access the other computer files but it can still access the internet and the wireless Canon printer that CiscoConnect can't find.  Rebooting or powering off/on the router didn't change this state.
Would appreciate any ideas in getting the XP back into the network.
    Firmware Version:
    1.0.02 build 13  May 24, 2011

    Update on above problem:
Performed a System Restore on the XP and partial networking functionality was restored.  The XP box now sees the Vista and the XP Explorer can see all computers under  the Workgroup.  Probing the Win 7 computers from XP's explorer the XP returns the following: message
\\Win7a is not accessible.  You might not have permission to use this network resourc. Contact the a...
This message doesn't mean much to me as I have limited networking experience but somebody here might understand this clue.

  • I see other computers on my network. I just cannot connect to one of them.

Apologies if this has been covered. my 2009 Macbook pro can see all of the other 3 computers on the home network. It can also see the time capsule. However, It can only connect to the time capsule and 2 of the other computers.
The same is true for a imac G5 that i have on the network as well. It can only connect to the time capsule. i get a message that "connection failed" after about 45 seconds
The g5 can connect to 2 of the other computers. Why can the g5 and the MBP not connect to each other?
Any thing i am not thinking of?

I am no expert, but per my recent post, I have been working through file sharing issues for the first time. I too have a MacBook and G5.
On my G5 I went to System Preferences --> Sharing --> File Sharing and added the drives (using the "+" icon) to the "Shared Folders" section. I have multiple drives and made sure that each one had read and write privileges. My MacBook can see them all.
I may be missing some other settings that would be beneficial, so I will be watching this thread with interest. Specifically, I have been wondering if setting up another user account on the G5 would help with overall file sharing functionality/options as well as MacBook Time Machine backups.

  • Connecting to other computers on the network

I just replaced an older Belkin wireless router with the new Airport extreme. I like it very much but I cannot now figure out how to connect to other computers on the network. With the old router I just clicked on network in the finder window and all the other computers on the network showed up an dI could click on one to connect. Now I see notheng. Any ideas????

I'm getting the same problem. I used to have the snow AEBS, but about 2 weeks ago I got the new one. Never had a problem connecting to my other macs in the house through network in the finder... now, no other machines show up.
Because there's no communication or recognition of devices through AEBS, wireless printing goes out the door too. My printer is plugged in by ethernet to my house network. If I am connected by ethernet to my network, I can print, but if it's wireless, nope.
Today, I got the apple tv. I was super excited unboxing it, hooking it up... and then when I go to sync up through itunes... oh wait, it doesn't show up in the devices list because of my AEBS problem.
Anyone have any ideas? I would love to play around with apple tv so please help... thanks.

  • Apple TV 3 not seeing any computers on the homeshare but is connected to wifi

I've had this problem for a few weeks now.
I got an Apple TV 3 from my Dad and put it in my new house. Connected it to my Wifi no problems but the problem is that it won't connect to my homeshare - it can't see any of the computers in my house.
It's connected wirelessly, it works with Airplay, I've done all of the diagnostic tests. My homeshare is definitely on, my firewalls are off, the router ports are open, the router has been reset several times, iTunes is left open, the homeshare is set up correctly in terms of usernames etc. I'm just out of ideas on why it won't connect to the homeshare.
I even took it to an apple store - they connected it to their own homeshare no problems so the ATV itself is working properly.
    Someone help!

    Let's get the troubleshooting steps.
    1. Make sure you have iTunes on your computer updated to latest 10.7 version. (applies to both - Mac and PC)
    2. Make sure you have your Apple TV updated to latest software 5.1 (Apple TV 2nd and 3rd Generation)
    3. Make sure that the computer (with iTunes running) is on the same LAN (Local Area Network) as the Apple TV.
    4. Use the same Apple ID on both iTunes and Apple TV (Apple TV can work / switch between different Apple IDs but keep it simple for now)
If you still cannot see your computer from the Apple TV (Computers)
    1. Reset your Apple TV
On your remote Hold down Menu and Down, until the Apple TV status light blinks rapidly
    2. Make sure you have no antivirus or firewall on your computer that may be blocking access to your computer over LAN.
Let me know if you need detailed info on any of the steps above.

  • We have a PC with iTunes that needs the hard drive reformatted. Right now, it can't connect to other computers on the network. Can I save my music to a thumb drive, then re-load when the computer is reformatted?

We have a Windows XP desktop with iTunes for windows. The hard drive needs to be reformatted. Right now, the computer will not connect to other computers on the network. Can I save my iTunes songs to a thumbdrive, then re-load after reformatting?  How do I do it?

Copy the entire iTunes folder out to the drive. If it is too big to go as one copy stuff over to another computer in batches. It is important to have not only the media but the library file in order to properly restore your library.
See also this User Tip. Assuming the machine won't connect to the internet you could download the SyncToy installer on another machine and then transfer it with the thumb drive. If it will connect to the net don't forget to deauthorize the machine before reformatting the hard drive.

  • Can't 'see" other computers on my home network

I just added a third Mac to my home network. We already had a G4 running OSX.2 and an iBook running OSX.4. I've now added a G4 running OSX.4, but the new computer doesn't "see" the other computers in the network list.
On the first G4, if I browse the network (by pressing apple-K) I see the other two computers, the iBook and the new G4.
On the iBook, if I open a finder window and click the "Network" icon, I get the other two computers listed.
But on the new G4, if I open a finder window and select the Network icon, I get three folders, "Applications", "Library", and "Users". And these three folders are apparently empty.
I DO have internet connection, so the connection is okay. And if I press apple-K to get a server list, and type in the IP address of one of the other two computers, I can access them that way. But why don't they show up on the Network list? What do I have configured wrong? Obviously, I CAN use the "apple-k" connect-to-servers-by-typing-in-the-IP-address method, but it's not as "nice" as having them just show up in the network window.
I'm sure it's something simple that I missed, and I'll probably feel like an idiot when someone points it out, but fire away folks!

make sure you have your automounter running. Do this in a terminal to make sure:
    ps aux|grep -i automount
If it is not running, you may have turned it off using some utility (bad idea). It's controlled by the NFS startup item and should be enabled so the OSX API can listen for traffic on port 548, which is the Apple Fileshare Protocol port of register.
if this is confusing, I can give more detail when I arrive at my home.

  • When I replaced my PC desktop with a Mac Mini and hooked up my HP printer to it, I discovered my other computers on the Wi-Fi network could no longer access the printer.  The manual says Maverick OS will not allow PC's to access the printer. Any thoughts?

When I replaced my PC desktop with a Mac Mini and hooked up my HP printer to it, I discovered that my other computers on the Wi-Fi network could no longer access the printer.  The manual says Maverick OS will not allow PC's to share the printer. Does anyone else have this problem?  My printer does not have on-board Wi-Fi but, otherwise, works fine.  I shouldn't have to buy a new one.  Is there a OS patch out there that would open the printer port for my PC computers?

I'm assuming that on the Mac, the System Preferences -> Sharing -> Printer Sharing -> [X] HP printer -> Everyone can print is selected?  That is to say, the Mac will allow anyone to print using the printer, and that you did not try to restrict who can print.
How is your network configured?  Bonjour as a protocol will NOT cross a router boundary.  If you have 2 or more subnets active with the PCs on one subnet and the Mac on another, that would block the PCs from seeing the Mac.
You could have multiple subnets if you have more than one router, such as an ISP provided broadband modem/router and another WiFi Router.  If the PCs are talking to one router and the Mac is talking to another, that could be a 2 subnet situation.  The additional routers must be put into bridge mode, which is done differently depending on the router.  But the basics are to diable DHCP and NAT services on the secondary router(s) having just one active router on the network.
Also, using Bonjour Browser on my Mac, it is showing me that the printer is being advertised as using Internet Printing Protocol, so if that is something selectable on Windows, maybe you can bypass Bonjour on Windows.
