VMware Fusion.. PC(on the Mac) compality

I work at an Education Foundation within a hospital and we have an Auditorium with a windows based live production suite. we are wanting to upgrade to a Mac because we want Final Cut Studio for editing. if we purchase VMware fusion, can i install and run the system on the mac using VMware fusion? its not just software, it has a PCI card that i would have to install? would have the PCI card installed interfere with OS X.5 when it running.
BTW: we are looking at getting a Mac Pro with 4GB ram 2x2.8 quadcore Intel Xeon. that should run it fine right???

You probably want to run Windows natively then.
4GB is really minimum for Mac Pro.

  • I am trying to install vmware fusion and during the install it continues to ask for the admin password to install.

I am trying to install vmware fusion 5-1.0.2 on osx 10.8.2 and it just keeps asking for the admin passoword for the computer.  I keep putting it in with no luck.  I have installed other programs with no issues.

If yours is the only user account on the Mac, it will have Admin privileges by default, so just type your password. Provided the installer is legit (i.e., downloaded from VMWare's servers and not some shady place), it needs Admin privileges since it needs to add stuff in the innermost folders of the OS for virtualization to work.
If your user account does NOT have admin privileges, you will need to have someone who does install Fusion for you. No way around this.

  • Time Capsule Installation on VMware Fusion Windows xp and Mac 10.5.2 sides

I've got the Time Capsule w/ time machine working on the Mac side of my laptop, and yet am avoiding a second attempt to load / install the same on my XP side due to the first time I tried, it didn't work and I had to go back and re-install it on the Mac side.
I'm assuming that the currently working 'Time Machine' is only able to see and back-up, via the Time Capsule, the Mac side of the hard drive? Although, if it sees the whole drive, both XP and OSX sides, then all is good, and my windows based data is being backed-up.
Maybe the Time Capsule can only work with windows as an external drive,
and yet hoping it can also work as a semi automatic back-up disk.
Appreciate any insight, advise and/or references to material that would help.
    Thanks

I asked this very question on another forum, as I had received differing answers previously. Here is the link to my question and to the answers I received, which seem pretty dispositive. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=5305380#post5305380
As you will see, the short answer is that the Win side is not being backed up, but how you should configure your TM backups of your Mac side depend on whether or not you first partitioned with Boot Camp and then installed VM Fusion, or whether you installed Fusion without Boot Camp. (I now use Windows Live OneCare to back up the Win side to the TC, although configuring it to work with TC was a nightmare I care not to have ever to repeat.)

  • Where in my Time Capsule does VMWare Fusion 5 store the virtual machine?

    Greetings from Toronto Apple Community!
Due to a software issue my MAC Book Pro has been erased and selectively rebuilt from my Time Capsule in order to prevent re-creating the problem.
I run Mountain Lion with VM Fusion 5 and Windows 7 64 bit Pro on my MAC.
Does any one know where in the Time Capsule backups does VMWare store the virtual machine???
Your brilliance and answers would be most appreciated!

  • VMWare Fusion, Boot Camp, and Orb

I'm trying to use Orb to stream audio files (podcasts downloaded daily within iTunes to be exact) to a Blackberry. Orb is currently only Win compatible (meaning the streaming can only be done from a Win computer), so I've got VMWare Fusion loaded on the Mac running Windows XP via a Boot Camp partition (I think I've described this properly). In order to enable the XP side to access the podcast files, I've set up shared folders within VMWare Fusion, and then targeted those shared folders within Orb to be streamed.
The problem is that Orb is supposed to regularly rescan those folders looking for changes to the content (as in new podcasts), but this doesn't seem to be happening. And I'm wondering if anyone has idea as to why. Could it possibly be because I am doing Windows via a Boot Camp partition? I see within Fusion that I can't use mirrored folders in this setup (Windows in a Boot Camp partition...at least I think this is the case). Would that make a difference (mirrored folders vs. the basic shared folders approach)?
I know this is sort of in the weeds in a non-Mac product (Orb), but it will make my wife really happy on her two hours of daily commuting if she can access those podcasts without having to remember to attach the iPod to the computer every night, which this setup (if it works properly) should enable her to do. The Blackberry is always with her.
    Thanks very much.

Yes, you need to make some changes, for some reason VMware still claims non or limited support for 64-bit but you can edit a file and work around the problem. When creating a fresh new Fusion environment for Vista.

  • How can i use the webcam in the VMware fusion?

I am using Windows XP with VMware fusion in my MacBook( OS X 10.5.1). Everything is good except the webcam. I have no idea how can I use the webcam(built in MacBook). Can someone give me more information about that? Thanks a lot!

Not sure I quite understood your question? However, I am running Win XP in VMWare Fusion an all the peripherals such as Bluetooth, IR Receiver and the webcam are identified as USB device and are therefore supported. No problem to use it with Messenger, Skype or Trillian. The only thing you have to do is to click on one of the small USB symbols in the lower right corner of the VMWare status line in order to enable it for the use in VMWare. That's it.
Hope this helps to fix your problem

  • VMware Fusion v4 on MacBook Pro 17 vs. MacBook Air

    Hello everybody,
I have a problem with my early 2011 MacBook Pro 17'' when running VMware Fusion v4 Trial - both the VM as well as my MBP are running annoyingly slow when I start up a VM. Switching from the VM to a Mac app takes what seems an eternity. When setting up an OS in the VM, the Mac becomes almost unresponsive. This applies to VMs running Windows 7, Windows XP, Mac OS Lion.
I just can't believe that the MBP is not powerful enough to operate on Lion OS while running a VM at the same time. I have experimented giving the VM 1,5GB RAM and 2GB RAM - doesn't make a difference.
VWware slows my Mac down so much that both the Mac and the VM become unusable.
Same thing happened when I installed the Parallels 7 Trial.
I don't believe that the Mac has any hardware issue - it performs satisfyingly and is as fast as you'd expect from a current model, when not running any virtualization app.
And here comes the real catch now: on my mid 2011 MacBook Air - which has a slightly slower CPU - VMware is blazingly fast and I can use Mac OS in parallel without hardly noticing that the VM is running.
Yes, I am aware that because of the SSD the overall impression makes the MBA probably appear a lot snappier, but then again it has only 2 cores as opposed to the MBP's 4 cores. However, I had absolutely no issues running VMware Fusion v3 when I was still on Snow Leopard with my MBP17.
So the machine can't be the problem, it was running fine before Lion with VM application, but the VM software is doing fine on a MBA, so the only two explanations left that I have are: the combination must be the problem (MBP17 + VM) or the MBP17 has some funny setting that I am not aware of which slows it down that much.
    Does anyone experience similar problems?
Any solution for performance issues that anyone is aware of?
    Help greatly appreciated

Thanks a lot! Tried what you suggested and it actually seemed to improve VMware Fusion v4 in the beginning but I soon ended up with an estimated 30% of the performance for both the VM and the Mac.
Finally I tought - hey, the whole system (physical hardware and the VM) always becomes slow when there's acutal disk access... so I checked the disk in Disk Utility - and there it was: it needed repair. So I rebooted from an install disk and repaired my MacIntosh Hard Disk and there you go: MUCH better.
Switched from VMware Fusion to Paralles in the end because VMware had issues with IE in the VM and seemed slower.
    Problem solved

  • VMware Fusion 3 Migration Assistant to migrate physical PC onto existing VM

I posted this on Twitter: VMware announces VMware Fusion 3 details for Mac OS http://bit.ly/43BLHJ
Good to see Fusion 3 coming. I have a question about its Migration Assistant and wonder if anyone can answer based on their use of the assistant in version 2.x
I wonder if it means installed applications on a physical PC are also copied over fully functional to the new virtual machine or just user settings and documents from the PC?
I have an HP Pavilion 17" laptop I despise (noisy hard drives and fans actually can bring on headaches). So this would be good to migrate to my MacBook Pro.
The problem then is, is there a way to migrate the external physical PC onto a VMware based set up I already started using or if that set up will become redundant? Anyone have ideas?
    Imran

According to the Migration Assistant dialog, programs, computer settings, and documents will be copied. It requires that both the Mac and the PC be on and connected through the same network.
For your info, VMWare also offers a free stand-alone utility that does what I think you're looking for. It's called VMWare Converter, and it can be found here:
    http://www.vmware.com/products/converter/
(For all I know, this is what the migration assistant uses.)
It can be run from the system you want to convert or (more ideally) you'd run it to copy the system that you want to convert, without the operating system actively running (basically, run the converter from another computer and have the hard drive with the OS to be virtualized mounted). It takes a while, but it ultimately produces some virtual machine files that can be used by VMWare.
I've used it once before, when I was switching my fiancee over from a terrible HP Pavilion laptop (15") to a Macbook. It was rather incredible - her entire system was cloned perfectly, and easily accessible through VMWare Fusion. Some useless utilities could be removed (things like special keyboard control software and Intel's wireless client manager, as the hardware that those programs utilized was no longer there) but otherwise all data and programs were copied perfectly. You'd never know that it was a copy of a real machine, it was so perfect. Really fantastic stuff.

  • TA24770 Clear Finder "Open With" menu with VMware Fusion 5

  • Split screen software of LG ultra wide monitor won't start with windows 7 installed with VMWare Fusion

I am using split screen sofware of LG but it is not working for me with vmware fusion 7. Is this a known problem? I am using an ultra wide monitor of LG (29um65), and installed windows 7 on my mac, by using VMware Fusion. But the software won't work of LG. It won't start. LG can't help me, because normally the software is working by using windows 7 on a windows pc. I got it also working on a  mac , when I used other virtual software as Virtualbox VM, but it seems not to work with vmware fusion 7. Can somebody help me with this problem?

yes, I think you are right, but I used virtual box in the past, and had no problem with the LG software, so it has also to do wit VMWare Fusion I think.
Never the less we still don't have a solution :-)
