Volume setting sometimes ignored

I've notices (macbook) that the volume setting in OS X is sometimes ignored by applications (like quicktime, idvd etc). It just goes on max. volume, although i told os x my volume has to be 50% for example.
After clicking in the menu bar (where it still tells me 50%) the setting is pushed to the value i specified earlier after clicking on the volume bar.
What is causing this?

I have turned my thrive off several times and the sound never came on then this morning its on. Go figure.

  • Is it possible to "lock" the ring volume setting?

I have set the call ring volume to its highest setting.
However, I guess when handling the phone, my fingers sometimes squeeze down on the volume setting button on the side of the phone and lower the volume back down.
    It is a huge pain.
Is there a way to lock the setting or to disable the volume button?
    Thanks.

I have been looking through the phone since I saw your post, and I have not come across anything at this point. Have you looked through the market for an app that can control the sounds? You must be hitting the buttons while using the phone, as it should not adjust the volume when the phone is locked... Maybe a different case? Something that sticks out a little bit to help "hide" the buttons?

  • Voice memo volume very low, it played normally then today very low even with volume set full blast.

I played my voice memos yesterday and the volume was fine.  Today I can bearly hear them.  I have the volume set to the highest with the buttons on the side.  Any thoughts?

    Hello NCMead,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
I'd like you to take a look a the follow support article, specifically starting at step 5:
Verify that the volume is set to a level you would normally be able to hear.
Ensure that there is nothing plugged in to the headset jack or the dock connector.
If the iPhone is in a protective case, make sure that the speaker port isn't blocked by the case.
Make sure that the speaker and dock port aren't clogged with debris. If necessary, clean it with a clean, small, dry, soft-bristled brush. Carefully and gently brush away any debris.
If an audio issue occurs when using a specific application, try testing other applications to see if the issue persists.
If the iPhone is paired with a Bluetooth headset or car kit:
    Try turning off Bluetooth.
If you experience difficulties with the Bluetooth feature, follow these troubleshooting steps.
    Restart the iPhone.
If restarting doesn't fix the issue, ensure that your iPhone is updated to the latest version of iOS.
If the issue is not resolved, please contact Apple Support.

  • Advice on RAID Sets, Volume Sets, and RAID Levels of the Volume Sets using an Areca Controller

I have read through a lot of information on disk usage, storage rules for an editing rig, users inquiries/member responses in this forum and I thank each and every one of you – especially Harm.
In building my new workstation, I purchased five (5) WD 1T, 7k, 64M SATAIII hard drives and an Areca RAID card, ARC-1880ix-16-4G, which I plan to use primarily as my media/data disk array.  The workstation will use a 128GB SATAIII SSD as the OS/program drive and I will transfer two (2) WD Raptor/10k SATA 70GB drives from my current system for pagefile/scratch/render use.  I tentatively plan on using a mobo SATAIII port for the SSD and mobo SATA ports with a software RAID (level 0) for the 10k Raptors.
In reading the Areca Instruction manual, I am now considering exactly how I should configure the 5 physical 1TB drives in terms of RAID Level(s), Volume Sets, and RAID Sets.  I must admit that I like the opportunity of allowing for a Dedicated Hot Spare as I am generally distrustful of the MTBF data that drive vendors tout and have the bad experience in the past of losing data from a mal-configured RAID array and a single drive hardware failure (admittedly, my fault!).
In line with the logic that one doesn’t want to perform disk reading while trying to write at the same time (or vice-versa), I am thinking the approach above should work OK in using the mobo disk interface and both software and external hardware RAID controllers without having to create separate RAID level configurations within a Volume Set or further dividing up the physical drives into separate RAID sets.  I know in forum messages that Harm noted that he had 17 drives and I could envision a benefit to having separate RAID sets in that situation, but I am not at that point yet.
To some degree I think it might be best to just create one RAID Level on one Volume Set on one RAID Set, but want to solicit thoughts from veteran controller users on their workflows/thoughts in these regards.
Anyone care to share thoughts/perspectives?  Thanks
    Bill

Thanks for the speedy feedback Harm - I appreciate it.
I was thinking RAID level 3 as well.
Of course, it's always something!   I purchased the Caviar Blacks by mistake - which are non-TLER.   I will work with EggHead to return the ones I purchased and replace them with RE4 versions  as I'm not thrilled about the possibility of the controller declaring the volume/disks degraded unnecessarily and although I have the DOS utility WDTLER where one is supposed to be able to enable/disable TLER on WD drives  - I suspect WD is way beyond that now anyway with current builds.
I agree with you about just testing the performance of the options for the raptors - on the mobo and then on the controller.  When I benchmark them I'll post the results in case others are curious.
    Thanks again....off to EggHead!

  • Flash Player 10.1 doesn't remember volume setting, defaults to MAX

Hi, since updating to Flash Player
10.1, all flash videos now default to max volume, whereas before it would remember the last volume setting from video to video.
How do I get the player to remember the volume setting, or how may I download an earlier version?
I have Vista 64-bit running 32-bit Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18943 and 32-bit Firefox 3.6.10.  The problem is present in both browsers.
It's a freakin' pain to remember to quickly turn down the sound on every single video I watch before I get blown out.

    Hello Forum Users et al,
I know this Updated Post follows shortly after my previous post, but I have a useful piece of info. that others may wish to check on.
I have been using a video:  www.video.com/12348372 as my test case for which the video comes on and then proceeds to not work.  If I click on the "arrow" in the bottom left corner of the video, the video screen goes "black" and nothing happens immediately.  But, here is the important information.  If I wait, then the video reappears, but sounds alternately starts and stops.
What I did for the last several hours was to minimize the email containing the video, and I noticed that the sound alternately came on and off.  But, after over two hours, the video started to play normally (total time for video is about 4 mins.)  When it gets to the end, the original "start arrow" appears.  I have repeatedly played this video after the two-hour period of erratic play, and it played normally.
This event happened one time over a week ago when I was on "Live Chat" with Adobe FP.  I was reporting my problem with FP with Mang Son while I had the video minimized, and, embarrassingly, the video started to work normally!  What could I say?!  I told him essentially that it looked like it was working, and I closed it out.  However, after this, I closed the email containing the video and tried to open the video from scratch, again.  Once again, it started to play erratically, even though it mysteriously was playing normally while I was on "Live Chat".
Users may want to use the video that I cited and see what happens.  It is still a mystery why the video won't work for hours and then all of a sudden start working.  I also had similar trouble with YouTube videos.
    Best regards,
    bookwilliam

  • All Network Volumes set as Login Items open in Finder on EVERY startup

    ...after updating to 10.5.8
I have a Mac running on an otherwise all PC network. Before updating to 10.5.8 I had 5 network volumes set to "connect" on startup automatically (System Prefs / Accounts / Login Items). This worked perfectly and connected to these volumes silently without me having to ever worry about it. I didn't even have to check the "Hide" boxes.
After updating to 10.5.8 however, it became completely annoying. Now it still connects to these volumes, but opens up every single one in Finder upon every startup. That's 5 windows I have to close every time I startup my computer. It may not sound like the worst thing in the world, but mind you I have to log out and back in every day for work. Even checking the "Hide" checkboxes don't do anything.
Anybody experiencing the same problem? Anybody know a workaround or fix? My company has a rather large and complex network so staying connected to certain folders that I use is a must. Thanks.

Thanks to both of you. I guess the search I ran wasn't good enough as I didn't find the discussion that you posted.
One of the possible workarounds posted there was to use a third-party program that I found difficult to understand and use. Instead I took V.K.'s advice and made an AppleScript and then made that script launch at login. Works like a charm.
Only difference is that my AppleScript isn't located in the Utilities folder (10.5.8), instead I got to it by going to Applications / AppleScript / Script Editor.
sorry, my mistake on the location.
Then I made a script and saved it as an application. I then put that application in my Login Items (System Prefs / Accounts / Login Items).
If you're having trouble finding the mount volume (or server) address, here's how you can find it: If you are currently connected to the volume(s) that you want to use, left-click it and hit Cmd+I (or right-click, Get Info). Use the address next to "Server:" - That's it!
Hopefully Apple will fix this bug soon so people don't have to make AppleScripts just to make the OS work correctly.
I wouldn't bet on it for leopard. leopard development has stopped now after snow leopard has been released. historically, Apple only releases security patches for old OS versions once a new one comes out. Interestingly, this bug is present in snow leopard too! or maybe they don't consider it a bug and this is how it should work. one can make a case for this, I guess.

  • Volume setting not saved

    Hello,
My volume settings are not saved when I power-cycle or reset my iMac. I have tried resetting the PRAM, with no effect. In another thread, someone asked me whether my PRAM battery might be getting old; the answer is, probably not, this computer was new as of this January.
One thing that's a little different from my other/previous Macs is that I have a Solid-State Disk (SSD) as startup disk and a standard Hard Drive (HD) for data storage. As recommended by various threads on the subject, to optimize performance while minimizing wear on the SSD, the /Users/xxx directory is on the SSD, but various sub-directories (Desktop, Documents, Downloads, ...) are on the HD. I've noticed that this leads to various odd perturbations (e.g. icons in the Finder sidebar only update when I click on them, can't launch a Parallels virtual machine by double-clicking its icon, ...), but I really don't see how it would be related to my volume settings.
    Here's the machine configuration:
    iMac (iMac11,3) 27" / 2.93 GHz Intel Core i7 / 16 GB RAM / 251 GB SSD / 2 TB HD
    Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K540)
    Boot ROM version: IM112.0057.B00
Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks for the suggestion. The Library folder is on the SSD, and I don't think the Public folder really has anything to do with this. But I did try moving the Desktop folder back to the SSD; the only thing that changed is that the Desktop icon in the Finder window sidebar is drawn correctly. The volume setting behavior is not changed.
I noticed something else, though: when I increase the volume and restart, the reboot chime is louder. This implies that my volume setting is correctly saved to PRAM, but then something else - during the start-up - cranks it back down. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to track this sort of thing?

  • Volume set to zero but music still plays

Just as described in the subject, I set the volume to zero but I can still hear the music. Happens with each and every song.
Problem is - this lowest volume setting is a bit too high for me. So this is pretty annoying. My common sense says that ZERO volume means ZERO volume.
Please don't tell me to just pause the song, that's not the issue. We should be able to set the volume to zero and hear nothing.
    Appreciate any help.

Yes! It happens to me too.
Plus: When I turn the volume to max, it plays on the external speakers too. Pleaseeeee someone help meeeee! I CANT listen to music like this!

  • The volume icon on my ipod won't disappear and the volume sets itself at full.

The volume icon on my ipod touch won't disappear and the volume sets itself at full. I have tried a master reset etc, but it doesn't want to cooperate. Any ideas?

    Try:
    - A reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod
If you still have a problem that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
I do not know what a "master reset" is.

  • Changing OSX default volume setting to a higher level in sound preferences

When I change the default volume setting to a higher level in sound preferences within OSX, it is back at the lower level at the next listening session the following time I use iTunes on my Mac Mini. Within System Preferences there is a section that lets you "choose a device for sound output" but the only choice I have is "line-out" and under the "port" heading there is only "built-in output"--no other choices are shown. I have external speakers attached which I like to use for listening to music as I work. What is the problem? Why won't the higher volume I set remain? Also, shouldn't more than one choice be shown for sound output?

This sounds like the problem that I'm experiencing and <a href-"http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=2694517#2694517">aske d about a couple of days ago. The sound level resets to 50% after shutdown.
I tried setting the levels in Audio MIDI Set Up as suggested above, but that hasn't changed anything.
In answer to B_web, I am running my external speakers through the headphone jack.
    So, any other suggestions?

  • Volume setting bug

On a 17" i5 2010 MBP (4GB/1,5 TB SSD) I've noticed that the audio volume setting fails when the audio output switches between the built-in speaker and the headphones (ear pods) and vice-versa. If I startup the mac with the headphones connected, the volume control works until I disconnect the phones and the audio output switches to the internal speaker.
    Any idea?

I have done some testing in the last 20 minutes and am convinced there is a conflict caused by Final Cut Express 3.0.
I opened and closed Audacity, Sound Studio and iMovie three times each with no problem.
I did the same with FCE and each time the Line In Volume control had reverted to the 50% setting.
So it appears there is a bug (at least with my setup).
Is there a cure - other than resetting System Preferences every time?
    Ian.

  • Headphone volume setting not retained

This topic has popped up in the past but I have not been able to find a solution.
Essentially what happens is that the volume setting for the headphones jumps back to 50% upon every reboot. Is there any way to fix this or if not to at least a way to unite the speaker and the headphones settings so I don't have to adjust the volume every time I use headphones?
    Thanks!!

Hi, You may want to adjust the volume level in eg; if you are using ITunes. Adjust the level under Options. Also some songs are recorded @ different volumes check the setting above each time you have this problem and you will fix the level. Also there is a very inexpensive program called Hear @ Joesoft.com great program very reasonable price. Hope this helps.
Oh, in the Midi Audio Section you can change the values and maybe this will help.
Another great item available is on E-bay called an external amplifier. This will correct your problem as it gives you total control of the volume level set it forget it. About $20 but it's great. An individual makes them himself and is in Hong Kong or some where in that area. A good guy and he will help with any questions that's the way I'd go.
Hope this helps. If you can't find it I will dig out the information to find it. It is a small black box about 2 x 2 inches, with power adapter and extension cord. Best thing I ever got for audio.

  • Saving volume setting from one computer to another...

    Hi...
My friend and I have identical iPods and we exchange tunes between one another's computers. We'd like the volume setting adjustments made by us in iTunes to be consisent on either iPod. But when we transfer the music files from one computer to the other, the volume settings always goes back to the normal setting.
Is there any way to save the volume settings made in iTunes, from one computer to another?
    Thanks for you time!

Which directories do you mean? The socket-$hostname, tmp-$hostname etc. shouldn't be of any importance and can be left behind. Important for akonadi are the .local/akonadi and .config/akonadi folders. What kind of errors exactly do you get?

  • IMessage: "Start New Conversations From" setting is ignored

In my iMessage settings, I have the option set to start new conversations from my email address instead of my phone number. I don't want anyone having my phone number, so this is a VITAL feature for me.
The problem is that the setting is IGNORED! New conversations are in fact coming from my phone number. I have tried changing the setting back and forth, even wiped my phone and started from scratch, and still, new conversations come from my phone number instead of my email address.
How can I get iMessage to acknowledge the setting and start new conversations from my email address?
    Thanks!

This worked for me.  Turn off iMessage in Settings---> Messages. Then turn off iPhone. Restart iPhone then turn iMessage back on.   The phone number should reappear.

  • Default Volume Setting??

I posted this message a couple weeks ago over in the Tiger forum yet no response. I think it really belongs over there since this problem is observed on all my Intel Tiger versions and on none of my PPC Tiger versions. Oh well, here it is...
I have six macs all running the latest version of Tiger.
Three G3 and G4 Macs and three duo core intel Macs. One MacBook and two Minis.
The three duo core machines are all nearly brand new - about a week old. It seems that no matter where I set the system volume control, after a reboot, the volume reverts to a default setting just over the half way point.
However, all three PPC Macs will always "remember" the preferred volume setting after any and all reboots.
This seems like a flaw in the Intel version of Tiger since only the three brand new Intel machines behave this way.
    Yes, I've repaired permissions.
This is important to me since all the machines share a single set of speakers through a KVM. To set the volume to my liking and have it stay there would be nice.
Is anyone else seeing this behavior?

I think an issue tied into this topic is the fact that the way Intel based boards initialize during boot-up is different. Also, each model will have a slightly different BIOS/CMOS.
Most likely the Macs with Intel-based boards do not have a BIOS that supports "boot sounds" via the external jack (or Apple has not yet enabled this feature for one reason or another).
On my mini, part way through the start up process, I can hear a faint pop from my external speakers. It's my guess this is when the audio driver is finally loaded.
The G4 Cubes have audio oddities of a similar nature due to the fact that all their sound must be sent over USB. In that case, Apple created a special routine that would load the audio elements as soon as possible, otherwise those users would have had no start up sound at all.
As far as the MacBook and volume level goes (and he was a bit non-committal on the response, imo ) it's quite possible that a) their particular BIOS has been updated/fixed to support saving the volume level between reboots, or b) the version of OS X running on those MacBooks is a special revision that has a fix in itself - if they are indeed storing this setting.
A third possibility is that the volume level IS being saved but only for internal speakers (which the MacBook has).
