VTDecoderXPCService hogging my CPUs

Just started my first Alexa project after updating to Pr 7.2.2 Mac.   Footage is 2K ProRes4444 with no audio in a matching Pr Sequence.
I notice a couple of things.  VTDecoderXPCService is running according to my Activity Monitor and taking up about 20-50% of my CPUs when I hit Play in Premiere.  I've never noticed this any previous version of Premiere.
For comparison, I opened another project that had a mix of MPEG and ProRes422 footage.  VTDecoderXPCService still runs in the Activity Monitor but using only about 6% of the CPUs.
When playing a ProRes4444 clip in QT Player, VTDecoderXPCService is using ZERO of the CPUs.  Interesting, no?
If I force quit VTDecoderXPCService, it relaunches itself immediately.  Google search tells me that it's a Sandbox service for Quicktime, whatever that means.
Also, my Inactive Ram is taking up all my Free Ram within a few minutes, which usually makes Premiere respond very sluggishly.  Shuttling in the timeline varies between acceptable and non-existent.
I thought the RAM leak issue was fixed a few revs ago.
MacPro3,1 - 10.8.5 - Quadro 4000 (older drivers because the latest make Pr inoperable) - very fast RAID5 - Adobe CC latest updates - AJA Kona LHi latest drivers

How do you find the parent PID of a process?
I'm getting out of control lsof problems once every couple of days
Apparently the 10.4.7 upgrade was supposed to fix lsof issues on systems with a lot of RAM. I've got 2 Gig (which shouldn't count as a lot) but am still having issues. Grr.

  • What is that "kernel_task" using 90% of all 8 CPUs on my MacBook Pro ?

    Hello
It happens more and more often: suddenly all CPUS almost max out for a "kernel task" which slows down all other tasks to unusability for as long as one hour, sometimes more. Why is that, and how can I avoid it ? The model is a rMBP from mid-2012, last version of Mavericks, 16 GM RAM & 150 GB of free space on the SSD. I'm using mainly Final Cut Pro (X) and Logic Pro (9 and X)
    Thank you for any advice

The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below are some possible causes for the condition.
    Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or a low-voltage reading from the battery, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to
a buildup of dust on the logic board
    high ambient temperature
a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
the malfunction of a cooling fan, a temperature sensor, a voltage sensor, or some other internal component
Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.
If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on battery power, the fault is in the battery or the logic board. If it happens only on AC power, charging is causing the machine to heat up. That may be normal on some models. CPU usage should drop when charging is complete.
Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a fault. For more thorough hardware testing, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If nothing is wrong with the hardware, then whatever you can do to improve cooling may help.
    Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or starting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or testing in safe mode may not be as easy as you think.
    Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
    External display
Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models while the lid is open may cause this issue. If applicable, test by closing the lid or disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display.

  • Is Adobe Flash compatible with WinXP using `Dual Core CPUs ??

Is Adobe Flash compatible with WinXP using Dual Core CPUs ??
I have this in my current system
    WinXP 32bit SP3
    Asus M2N68-AM Plus motherboard
AMD X2 7850 Black Edition Dual Core CPU
    2GB DDR2
WD Caviar SE16 500GB SATA drive
    Onboard VGA **only**
I keep having consistent problems using this new motherboard with a Dual Core CPU
My new motherboard keeps crashing randomly while watching video online.
I can watch a video for about 2 min or even 20min and then the PC randomly crashes
I get this weird mosaic pattern on the screen whenever it crashes and then I have to press Reset to Reboot
And it **only** crashes after streaming a video on any of the websites, YouTube, CBS.com, NBC.com, Hulu.com etc, etc
My last PC never crashed while watching a video online - it was just slow since Adobe player is a hog -- and it was still a 1.8GHZ CPU !!
My last PC is still using version 10.1 for the Adobe Flash player -- and it ***never*** crashes
The most I ever see happen on that one is that the player might occasionly crash in the video window and the error message says to reload the Flash player.
Then I tried this remedy of disabling the Hardware Acceleration in the Adobe Settings  -- but no luck still.
I even downgraded to 10.1, then 10.0 and it still keeps getting these random crashes while watching video
I'm wondering if WinXP 32bit is really compatible with Adobe Flash when using a Dual Core CPU
Before I plunk down $100 for Win7, I'm thinking about trying Ubuntu and see what luck I have.
I haven't seem anything to the contrary yet.
    thanks,

What browser & version do you use?
How exactly does that "crash" manifest itself?  What exact error message are you getting?
Have you tried to update the device drivers for your graphics/video/display adapter?

  • CPUs at 100% - Cause is two unknown tcsh processes

Every once in a while, I've noticed both CPUs' usage pegging at 100%. Each time, checking Activity Monitor shows two tcsh processes hogging the CPU. This is happening although I have started no terminal session, therefore no tcsh processes of my own. Force quitting these processes is not causing any obvious negative results, and is reducing my CPU usages to normal.
Does anyone know if the system itself is starting these processes for some worthwhile purpose? Or any other cause?

    Hi AndyK,
When the cpu's are running flat out next time, try to enter this into the Terminal:
    <pre>ps -auxwww | grep tcsh</pre>
That should list the active tsch processes and give a bit more information about what they are doing.

  • Load on 2 CPUs is smaller than 2 times load on 1 CPU, how to improve?

    Good afternoon,
I am trying to improve the performance on my system.
I have used "pbind" to fix a process on a CPU, like this:
    Process P1 -> CPU 1
    Process P2 -> CPU 2
Every process uses Oracle access (although most of the data are loaded into memory) and a connection towards another central process.
The problem now is the following:
if I launch process P1 50 times/second, the first CPU runs on 22% idle.
If I launch, next to P1, process P2 also 50 times/second, both CPUs (1 and 2) run on 19-20% idle.
    If I launch, next to P1 and P2, process P3 also 50 times/second, all three CPUs (1, 2 and 3) run on 16-17% idle.
As my systems contains 16 CPUs, at the end, I loose 56% performance.
Now I wonder what is the nature of this performance killer? Is it simultaneous disk access, simulateneous interprocess communication, is it a purely UNIX related issue, is it an Oracle problem, ...?
Can anybody give me some ideas which could be the problems and how to investigate how to detect and verify them?
    Thanks
    Dominique

  • "Translator" process is hogging CPU, causing crashes - what is it?

So in the past few weeks, my machine has seemed slower and slower each day. In the past week, my mouse will jump across my 2 screens erratically. I thought it was either the mouse or USB port so tried different configurations until it occurred to me that, on random days, after a random startup; all is well.
I popped open the Activity Monitor and now can confirm my problem. My machine works great when the process "Translator" behaves itself. Every time I get the erratic mouse, slow window response and (every time) an eventual freezing of my screen requiring forced restart - Translator is hogging all my CPU. If I sample it, my machine crashes to a freeze. It I get more info on it, I can see that Translator has to do with syncservices (why do so many problems on 10.5 have to do with syncservices?). I have tried Googling for more info on it, but there doesn't seem to be anything out there. If I force quit it (standard quit doesn't work), my system will hang.
Does anyone know what this is and how to fix my problem?
I know the standard next steps (create a new user account and migrate files sans ~/Library, re-install OS, etc.) but am afraid that the problem will resurface if ties to syncservices (I do use Mobileme to sync, have an iPhone and an iPod). I guess I'm looking for more info before proceeding with drastic and time intensive measures that may very well yield the same problem despite the effort.
Any help would be very much appreciated. It is worth noting that it took 5 full minutes for me to correct my spelling in this post due to the erratic mouse. Good times. I am off to restart - again.

So by removing the Exchange sync for my Address Book prefs, I was able to completely clear-up the problem. That link to opendns was VERY VERY interesting. I looked at my routing tables and indeed, they hijack google DNS entries and cause all sorts of havoc as a consequence. As junky as my ISP's DNS service is (RoadRunner/Time Warner in SoCal), I believe I will switch back to them as I find I don't get the original problem, with Exchange enabled, when using their DNS instead of opendns.
What a mess and my thanks for the quick eye (I am going to mark your post as the solution for me)! I can't say that I am certain whether this is solely an opendns issue or if it is an issue with Exchange sync on the Mac, separate from opendns; however I am in a position where I don't really require either so both disabling Exchange and removing opendns are acceptable to me. Hopefully both Apple (exchange support - possibly fixed in Snow Leopard?) and OpenDNS (the idiot idea to re-route google dns) address their issues and can use issues such as mine to replicate the problem.
How would a home user with either little desire or knowledge ever diagnose an issue such as this? For every person like me, there has to be 10 who would believe their mouse needs replacing, then take it to the shop after that doesn't work, then get a new machine, etc. An entire sub-economy seeded by a simple software-based issue.

    – appears to be related to Adobe Flash Player (I upgraded to the latest release, 12.0.0.44, when I upgraded to Firefox 27). Any page with Flash content kicks off the problem; successive similar pages increase the problem until the Firefox process becomes CPU bound. Temporary workaround (other than restarting Firefox) is to select Tools>Add-ons>Plugins, and then change the activation setting for Flash from "Always Activate" to "Ask to Activate"
The above temp workaround works in an limited way. as soon as you reply to activate in one tab/window it then auto activates in all other windows/tabs.

  • Contacts, AddressBookSourceSync, etc., hogging processor

I'm on a clean install of Mavericks on an early 2009 8-core Mac pro.
    1. After the machine is up for a while, it becomes unresponsive, and Activity Monitor typically shows AddressBookSourceSync as the culprit, hogging 100% of the CPU.
    2. Console shows many icbaccountsd events every minute. Those messages state:

(Bolding is mine. That item seems telling. And I've removed numeric strings that may be personally indentifiable; I'm not sure.)
The last 4 items always repeat another 10 times (for a total of 12 times), and then the process stops briefly. Then, 3-5 minutes later, the entire cycle starts all over again.
    3. In Preferences > Internet Accounts, there are a few accounts that I'm unable to delete. I have 3 active iCloud email addresses and 1 inactive gMail address. The primary iCloud address of course has all of the typical items checked -- mail, contacts, calendars, etc., etc. I noticed that the two, secondary addresses also had contacts and notes selected -- but I don't need either of those addresses to sync contacts or notes. So, I've attempted to untick those checkboxes, but generally, whenever I do, the boxes recheck themselves automatically after a minute or so.
There are also separate Contacts entries, at the bottom of the list, bearing the names of the secondary email addresses. I've attempted to delete those, but they always come back automatically.
With that in mind, I logged into those accounts in iCloud.com (on the web), and I discovered that each address had a few contacts in its own address book. So, in Contacts.app (which syncs with my primary iCloud account), I exported vcards for those contacts, just in case, then at iCloud.com, I deleted those entries from the secondary accounts' Address Books. Those items remained in the primary address' Address Book, and I have no idea why those contacts ever got assigned to the secondary addresses. But now, those Address Books are absolutely empty. I was hoping that after doing so, I could delete those entries in Preferences > Internet Accounts, but even though those address books are now empty, the deleted entries always reappear after a minute or two.
    4. Another thread brought to my attention the folder ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/Sources. That person had similar, but not identical, problems, and he found that on his computer, this folder had a few hundred folders, each containing a Configuration.plist file that pertained to one of his email addresses. He was able to solve his problem (duplicate address collections in Contacts.app) by deleting all of the folders with plists that pointed to the problem address. When I viewed this folder on my Mac, I found it contained 13,800 such folders.
But on my Mac, the plot thickens, because in my Sources folder, a new plist folder is created and added to the folder every 20-25 seconds. So the Sources folder gains 2-3 new items every minute. (Hence, the 13,800 folders previously mentioned.) I have not been able to determine what function is propogating the folders.
    5. Following the advice on another thread, I tried:
    • Quitting Contacts.app
    • Force-quitting AddressBookSourceSync
    • Deleting the reappearing items in Internet Accounts, and
    • Deleting com.apple.internetaccounts.plist -- then
    • Quickly restarting the Mac.
    But to no avail.
This is a clean install, so, I'm stumped. Obviously I signed in to my existing iCloud accounts, but I did not copy over any preference files for address book, etc., from the previous hard drive's backup in an attempt to avoid copying over any gremlins from the last hard drive. But for the record, I never had this problem in Mountain Lion. So, this is something that has arisen as a result of migrating to Mavericks. (No, I did not use Migration Assistant)  :-)
If anyone has any suggestions, they'd be most welcome.
    Thanks.

  • Limit Time Machine backup/sparsebundle so one machine doesn't hog all the time capsule space?

    Is this possible?
I have a brand new time capsule, my wife and I will be backing up our computers to it using Time Machine. Is it possible to limit the storage size of the sparsebundles so one of us (probably me) wont hog all the space?
My wife doesn't use her's as much, while my computer is on almost everyday, so I'm affraid my computer will limit the amount of states, or versions, that she can back up before her time machine has to start deleting old files.
I'm trying to avoid a situation where my time machine goes back a year while her's only goes back a few months.
    Thanks!

No. That is not how a Time Capsule and Time Machine work. All backups are adding to existing backups.
About TM "Backup Drive is Full"
Alert TM only deletes older files if they have been deleted from the source and when TM needs space on the backup drive for a new incremental backup. Time Machine "thins" it's backups; hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first of the day; those "daily" backups over 30 days old, except the first of the week. The weeklies are kept as long as there's room.
So, how long a backup file remains depends on how long it was on your Mac before being deleted, assuming you do at least one backup per day. If it was there for at least 24 hours, it will be kept for at least a month. If it was there for at least a week, it will be kept as long as there's room.
Note, that on a Time Capsule the sparsebundle grows in size as needed, but doesn't shrink. Thus, from the user's view of the TC it appears that no space has been freed, although there may be space in the sparsebundle.
Once TM has found it cannot free up enough space for a new backup it reports the disk is full. You can either erase the backup drive and start your backups anew or replace the drive with a larger drive.
To accomplish what you want would mean using just an external backup drive partitioned with volumes for each of you to use, and the use of a different backup utility that overwrites old files rather than saving them as does Time Machine.

  • Mail and safari hogging cpu - corrupt preferences?

I am having a major problem when I run Mail or Safari under Mavericks on my iMac - they hog all the CPU making it hard to do other things unless I keep quitting the Mail Web Content or Safari Web Content processes using Activity Monitor. This also has shown up in other discussions on this board and no one seems to have a resolution to the problem. But the curious thing is that I only have the problem on my older iMac, but on my new MacBook Pro that also runs Mavericks, runs Mail with identical settings (and is accessing the same server) and runs Safari with the same bookmarks there is no problem. So the problem must be with something on my iMac that is causing Mail and Safari to keep running these Web Content processes and taking over the CPU.
In the old days I would have assumed it was a corrupt Preferences file and deleted that, but no one has sugggested this. Is this possible? If so, what should be deleted?

While everything had been working fine, this morning I installed the latest update to the operating system and I am back with the same problem (although I am only having Mail Web Content hogging the CPU and not Safari Web content this time).  I am posting below some information from the log as you suggested (sorry if it is too much but I don't know what you are looking for). Let me know if there is anything else you need. Thanks for the help LInc.

  • Pool members with different CPUs

I've installed Oracle VM 3.0.1 on two servers, given them a repository on a Netapp, created a VLAN group in which they both participate without any problems, and things appears to be working well. However, when trying to migrate a virtual server between the two hypervisors, I get a window with no applicable targets, hinting that the AdminServer.log might have more to tell me.
Sure enough, the servers "have CPUs in different compatibility groups": one servers is runnning on Default_Intel_Family:6_model:23_NoNx and the other is Default_Intel_Family:6_Model:15. In addition, I find out to my surprise the second server in the pool is not running with VT enabled in the BIOS (xm info does not list 'hvm' in virt_caps), and to remedy the "NoNx", which I assume means that server does not have the NX extension enabled, reboot the server and fix those things in the BIOS.
However, after booting the server and seeing the member is enabled in the group once again, I still get the same error. After a Rediscover, the entries in the AdminServer.log is the same, even the "NoNx" flag added to the model number. With 'xm info' I can see the changes in the BIOS have been picked up by the Xen core, but apparently the inventory in the management server still has the old CPU information. Question then is, 1) how to update the CPU information 2) How similar do the CPUs need to be to allow live migration? Do they have to be the exact 'model', as one can find in /proc/cpuinfo?

I would've thought a Rediscover Server should've updated the CPU information in the database. If not, I would remove the server from the pool, delete it completely in the UI and then discover it again.
    2. They need to be idential, i.e. at least the same family and model. Possibly even stepping, but I'm not sure on that one.Yup, deleting the server and discovering it again resolved the outdated CPU information. And, it turns out the difference in model is sufficient to deny migration.

  • VMware Fusion suddenly hogging resources and fan running constantly

I have had my MacBook for about a year now and until 2 weeks ago had no problems with this issue before. Now suddenly, if I launch VMware Fusion (even not running any programs) the MacBook fan comes on and stays on. When I launch the Mac "Activity Monitor' App, sure enough VMware is hogging all the resources. I have added nothing to the XP side of things during this time. Any ideas on what might be happening as the constant fan 'on' issue is a pain and it FEELS like it's a drag on regular Mac performance. Thanks.

Is it possible that your Anti-Virus software (Not sure if you installed one) is performing a scheduled virus scan at bootup? Until that is finished, it will continue to attempt to start/finish the scan at boot up.
    Just a thought.
