[W510] - USB 3.0 SSD, poor performance.

Help please?
I'm getting some rather poor performance on both of the USB 3.0 ports on the laptop.
I have an SSD that's been tested via internal SATA II connection, capable of (sequential) read 275MB/s, and write 250MB/s. Also have a 3.5 inch WD Caviar Black 2TB SATAIII (WD2002FAEX), tested via eSATA, capable of (sequential) read 150MB/s, and write 150MB/s (think it saturated the eSATA on the W510).
However, when either of these two drives was connected via USB 3.0 (tested with three different brands of USB 3.0 enclosure), the sequential read performance was only at 85MB/s, and write was (REALLY bad) at 60MB/s (even with the SSD). This leads me to think there's a bottleneck somewhere on the W510 (because I know for certain, the USB 3.0 enclosures are capable to at least give 130MB/s read and write. The drives are also capable of performing faster than 100MB/s as well).
All drivers, BIOS, firmware are the latest. Platform is Windows 7 Ultimate - 64bit.
The NEC USB 3.0 chipset seems to be connected to PCI Express 2.0 x1 bus.  Reading on the Intel QM57 chipset spec, the PCI Express 2.0 implementation is only capable of serving 2.5GT/s (http://www.intel.com/products/notebook/chipsets/qm57/qm57-overview.htm), using 8b/10b encoding (http://www.tmworld.com/article/318759-What_does_GT_s_mean_anyway_.php), that gives 2Gbps.  So I was expecting the USB 3.0 connection is capable of giving me around (not exact, as I accept there's overhead) 200MB/s.
At this point in time, a single mechanical drive (consumer level) can't quite go up to 200MB/s yet, but SSD can.  And therefore, I expected my SSD benchmark via USB 3.0 could at least give me that....sadly it wasn't the case with the W510.
This brings two questions I have for the forum:
1. Why is my W510 USB 3.0, in combination with high performance disks and rather capable USB 3.0 enclosures, perform so poorly.
2. If my understanding from above is correct, then isn't this "USB 3.0" feature (regardless of my benchmark result) sounds misleading?  Because the product, W510, is simply incapable of delivering a USB 3.0 experience even in "ideal" situation (limited by the 2.5GT/s).

I did try eSATA as well, the WD drive was able to do 150MB/s and 149MB/s, read and write respectively. (as the QM57 chipset natively supports SATA at 3Gb/s)
The issue here is as part of the decision process to get the W510, USB 3 capability came into consideration (for having more than 1 fast external storage device).
EDIT:
Ultimately, what I'm really after is:
1. Have I configured something incorrectly, or misconfigured something.  Or is there's some ideal component linkage I'm missing.
2. Is the W510's USB 3.0, at the very least, capable of delivering 2.5GT/s?
3. I may, or may not have to file a complaint to Lenovo or BBB for misleading marketing / sales info.
2nd EDIT:
I do thank you for suggesting eSATA.  However, if Lenovo is going to reply to this, I simply won't take "use the touchpad instead" if the trackpoint isn't working properly.

  • Ssd cache performance

At this point I can only image it will help but I am trying to decide if sdd cache on the 450r is going to have a better return on performance versus a ssd drive for swap files on my VMware host. Soon to be multiple hosts.  This is not a production box but a replica site I have pieced together from some new hardware and old,.
I would like to know if anyone has any performance metrics with ssd cache.  I am looking to get 2x256GB drives in a mirror.  This is a big project since I will have all my bays filled.  I would have to find a temp location for all my replicas break my raid and rebuild everything. I am not against it, I just want to know what I am looking at for percent of performance gains.  i know it will depend on what I plan on get setting cache policy to but I am planning on write around since most of our systems are read based.
    Any info is appreciated.
Also let me know if you anyone is using iSCSI over NFS and why.  I have heard a lot about read being way faster with iSCSI but since I can't have multiple hosts on an iSCSI volume am stuck with NFS for now.

  • USB 3.0 + SSD + W510 = Low Performance???

    Hey everyone-
I just purchased this W510, and I love it!
I also purchased a Corsair F120 120GB SSD and a Patriot Gauntlet USB 3.0 enclosure for storage of files.  In running initial tests on this drive with HD Tune Pro, I found the following:
    1) Sequential read: Internal HDD starts off at ~97 MB/sec and tapers off to ~60% of that speed as the test runs out to the edge of the platter.  SSD, on the other hand, is a constant ~94 MB/sec or so, and equals the performance of the HDD when the HDD is about at the 100GB mark (500GB drive).
    2) Sequential write: Internal HDD is still just under 100 MB/sec to start, but the SSD only delivers about 50 MB/sec.
Now this is a newer Sandforce SSD capable of over 250 MB/sec transfer rates, so I know the bottleneck isn't the SSD.  Also, I read test writeup here: http://www.guru3d.com/article/msi-star-usb-3-controller-test/9 where a USB 3.0 card installed in a desktop PC performed MUCH better with an external SSD connected, at almost twice the read speed and 3x the write speed that I experienced, using the same test software.  Finally, let's assume the SSD is limited to the same throughput as the internal hard drive for some odd reason... why would the write speed to the SSD be cut in half?  In any case, I would expect higher performance from a 250 MB/sec drive on a 5Gigabit interface connected to a PCI bus vs. an HDD capable of around 100 MB/sec on a 3 gigabit interface on the same PCI bus.
Any ideas on  what might be going on here?  Can I actually expect higher performance?  At this point, I'd be happy to match the performance of the internal hard drive!
My USB 3.0 controller driver is version 1.0.19.0, which I believe is current.

  • W510 usb 3.0 not functioning

I have a Lenovo w510 and ever since I've installed my SSD, my USB 3.0 has been transfering anywhere between 13mb/s to 45mb/s. I've tried multiple different harddrives as well and I'm getting about the same results. I even get notifications once in a while saying that my device can perform faster if I plug it into the USB 3.0 port even though it's all ready in the USB 3.0 port. I've updated all my drivers and firmware and it's still performing fairly low. Any suggestions?

Can you try copying one big file? Conventional hard drives have trouble accepting large amounts of small files, causing transfer rate to drop significantly.

  • T520 poor performance and SpeedStep problem

Hi to all the users in the forum!
I'm new to this forum and I would like to thanks for any future help that you'll give me.
After some months of using my new T520 (i7 2620m) I was really disappointed for the poor performance of this ThinkPad.
Briefly I've noticed slow responses to many programs in particular in the MS office enviroment (.ppt files) as well as on my gmail interface under firefox, and in general the Win7 environment. It sounds really strange to me, I came from a 5 years old Intel®-Centrino® (1.7Ghz) experience and the differences between the old and the new machine should be more sharp. So I've investigated to understand this behavior. Before that I've upgraded the system with the newest files.
To understend the behaviour I've used the following software (x64):
CPU-Z to evaluate the performance in terms of Core speed; Multiplier and Bus Speed
Prime95 to produce an heavy load
Intel processor ID Utility to produce a "certified" report.
The responses is always the same. The multiplier is stuck at 8X with a frequency of about 0.79Ghz and the gauge in the CPU performance of the Lenovo Power Manager” always indicating  29% (that is 0.79Ghz of the 2.7Ghz of the i7 2620M processor).  Nothing change if I switch on the turbo boost or if I made some variation in the performance profile. The only change that I can observe/listen is an increase rotation of the system fan and the consequent noise increase when the turbo boost is on. Even during the “torture-test”  of Prime95 no differences in frequency is observed.
The only way to obtain an higher frequency is to disable the speedstep technology from the BIOS setup, with the consequence to have the multiplier stuck to 24X with a frequency of 2.7Ghz…. but is not a solution!
The described behavior of this processor under Win7 is also observed with Ubuntu 11.04.
I’ve reported the problem to the technical support, and they ask me to run the “Lenovo Toolbox System” because is the only software that they can “trust”. So I did it and sent the log files. Now I’m waiting for a response and in the meantime I would like to discuss, report and share my experience to this forum.
Actually from my point of view, there is a serious problem with the i7 processor, that I can’t solve and a substitution is required. I’m disappointed because I’m using since some months a PC with reduced performance and because I spent my time to demonstrate this evidence. I hope to solve quickly this inconvenience and I’ll report to the forum any news from the technical support.
    Thanks

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The CPU will throttle down if the battery is removed. This is intentional for various reasons.
To extend overall battery longevity, use the provided Power Manager.
    1) Launch Power Manager
    2) Click Advanced in the top right
    3) Go to the Battery tab
    4) Click Battery Maintenance
    5) Choose Custom charge threshold
    6) Start charging from 80, stop charging at 90.
This should extend battery lifespan. Avoid overcharging it, and avoid overdepleting it. Lithium ion batteries don't last long under those circumstances.
In extended storage or when you know you will be using AC almost exclusively, set the charging threshold to 30 to 40, deplete it to 40%, then leave it there.
There's lots of technical details here: http://www.batteryuniversity.com/

  • Blackberry Link for Q10 with Outlook Sync has very poor performance and not good Functionality

I am wondering if anyone has tested this software. Blackberry Sync software for my previous phones were wonderful. I can sync my contacts and calender in a very short time. With this new Blackberry Link it takes about 1 1/2 hours Plus to complete. And when it does complete - it duplicates entries which I did not want.
Plus what is missing is the following:
        1. I am not able to say Update both Device and Outlook any longer. This functionality is gone.
My question: How does it do a two way sync if I only have a choice to use what I have on my phone or on outlook only
I want to be able to update my Outlook contacts with changes and addition I made on my Q10 phone and update my device with changes I made to Outlook.
Why did Blackberry remove this very flexible choice? Plus Blackberry Link has very poor performance.
I work for a large company and I do Enterpirse Software testing daily. Performance is the number one complaint for customers on top of the UI and functionality.

    Thanks for the reply.

A thing I noticed when I opened Descktop Software for the first time since the new Z30 is that the old application thinks it is looking for a Z30.  I havent even opened the application since before I got the new device.  The only way it could think I have a Z30 is if it is using a lot of the same files as Blackberry Link.   That is some pretty terrible software development practices in my opinion.  I'm going to take your suggestion and uninstall both apps, run a registry cleaner and reinstall BB Link and I bet it works a lot better afterwards.
    EDIT 12 March 2014 7PM EST
Still all of the same errors with regard to syncing outlook contacts and Schedules.  I will post all of the error messages I recieve here as I see them.  Application is always started by connecting device with USB cable.
    "Sync was unseccessful

    REBOOT
Change to sync contacts only, 1-way sync to computer, always use device data
    "Sync was unsuccessful
CPreferencesManager: Configuration Value for /Preferences/Account_1_65537/DevicePin not set in TransConfig.xml for translator RimBB"
    REBOOT
Application went through the whole process and hung for about 15 minutes and then completed successfuly syncing contacts only.
Change to callendar only.  Sync completed successfuly.  No hang or errors. very quick.
A new recurring appointment on the device was not transferred to the computer.
    Sync callendar again, completed successfuly.
Appointment is still not transferred to computer.
So far I've spent an hour tonight trying to sync my contacts and appointment changes from just one day.  I'm not thrilled.

  • W510 Solid State Drive (SSD) Gets Stuck Causing BSoD. Why?

Hey guys, this has been a problem for a while now, and it is really mind boggling ... I have a Lenovo ThinkPad W510 laptop with a 256GB Crucial M4 SSD drive. Ever so randomly the drive just hangs, the LED light that the drive is trying to load something stays "ON" for up to 5 minutes or so before it finally goes into a Blue Screen of Death (BSoD). Once it goes into BSoD the laptop reboots and it gets stuck on the ThinkPad motherboard logo, eventually it will display "ERROR 2100: HDD0 (Hard Disk Drive) initialization error (X)" Where X is usually 1 or 2, sometimes 3 but rarely. It will not function again until I physically turn it off and back on using the power button.
A little bit of background about the problem, this is my 3rd Crucial 256GB M4 SSD, Crucial has been very helpful and they went as far as replacing the drive twice, i am starting to highly doubt its a drive issue, I think it could be something from the laptop itself. To be more clear, my laptop has also been serviced back in March (Motherboard was swapped as well as keyboard), parts failure. It was all done in very timely manner and everything was OK after the swap.
A representative from Crucial told me that this is a classical problem with the SATA controller driver handling TRIM, he said the drive is getting stuck in an infinite TRIM state which causes the BSoD, after that the drive goes into some sort of a "panic" mode to protect itself and doesn't function again until a full power cycle. (thus the need to turn off and then on the laptop) he also added it could be fixed by installing the correct SATA controller driver.
I have tried to use the default windows SATA controller driver, and I have tried to use the Intel one too, and it seems to happen less often with the windows drivers, but overall, it happens at least once a day. It is really frustrating and I am not able to get anywhere with it.
Any help or advice is highly appreciated. I am considering getting rid of the Crucial SSD altogether and just using Intel SSD instead, but I am really doubtful that it is the SSD's fault especially that its the 3rd one I use. I also know a couple of friends who own ThinkPads with Crucial M4 SSD inside them, and they seem to be working very well for them.
    Thanks in advance,
    Al.

    Hi again,
Ok so I have applied the fix you have mentioned above, and it did improve (lower) the frequency of the problem happening. It really improved a lot significantly when I uninstalled the Intel drivers and used the Windows 7 built in SATA controller drivers.
However, ... it still happens ... less frequent, but it still takes place, my SSD still gets stuck at least once in 3 days now, or once in 2 days (after severe testing) and the same scenario happens. I am really stuck at this point, and not sure which direction to take.
Any help would really be appreciated, if you have / know any method to debug the BSoD's I get and a way to locate the source of the problem I am willing to go through it 1 by 1 and solve this problem before deciding to finally just giving up on the drive altogether.
    Sincerely,
    Al.

  • [SOLVED] Samsung 840 Evo SSD poor performance

I'm posting this as [SOLVED] just in case anyone else comes across this issue. This isn't a linux problem but it may affect linux users and the cause isn't obvious. Mods feel free to delete this topic but it may be useful for people searching in the future.
Samsung have identified a problem with this model of SSD which causes data access to become slower over time. They have released a "Performance restoration tool" that upgrades the firmware and restores the performance of the drive (essentially by re-writing the data to it).
The tool is available here: http://www.samsung.com/global/business/ … tAodanEAIg
As of today (27/10/2014) the tool is only for Windows but a linux version is due "At the end of October"

I thought I'd already posted my experience, but I guess it's better late than never. I tried to update with the bootable cd.iso but the update failed with an error saying something like "I AM AN ERROR" which I found to be quite amusing. Luckily the error happened before starting the update process so nothing was broken. Next up was the FreeDos method mentioned by Slizzered and everything worked just fine. So just to play safe, go with the bootable usb stick method which has been confirmed to be working.

  • W510 USB Gone AWOL

as anyone else had problems with the USB port at the rear of the W510?
It was working fine for the first few weeks of owning it but I noticed recently that anything I plugin is powered ok but there doesn't appear to be any data connection. My mouse, blackberry, ext hdd and ipod all no longer work.
I've looked in the Device Manager and sure enough there's a 'Unknown Device' under the USB Controllers which I think is this USB port. I've tried uninstalling the driver and reinstalling it with no success.
The error associated with it is:
Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)
The Microsoft site explains that this code means:
One of the drivers controlling the device notified the operating system that the device failed in some manner.
Does anyone have any ideas how to resolve it? Could it be a hardward problem?
    Regards
    Andy Wu

An update for the BIOS was released yesterday for the W510. But I don't see anything in the release notes regarding USB.

  • BlackBerry z10 battery poor performance

Hey i have a question with regards to how am I supposed to improve my battery on the z10. I bought this phone last year at full price from my carrier. Since then the battery performance has been very poor... even after the number of updates and reducing which apps are running, it still won't last more than 5 hours when using the phone. in fact I would say it drains very quickly. I see the % sign on the battery and it moves from 100% to 87% very quickly like within an hour when i am using my phone. I have done a lot of research over the past year and read forums on how to improve it and have had no results. Can anyone provide me any advice? Perhaps someone from blackberry themselves? I am really disappointed because I could have spent that money on a different phone which has a battery that actually lasts the day. Thank you and I will await for some feedback.

Have you checked if there are any specific apps that drain the battery ?
    Settings->App manager-> Device monitor->Battery
That option is only on newer OS versions.
What OS are you on and do you have many email accounts set up that sync contacts, calendar and more?
I had a corrupt contact that would try to sync over and over again.
Start with this if you sync Over The Air with Outlook
In outlook Make a new folder for contacts called backup
move all contacts to the folder and wait for all to be removed from device
then pull battery on device and put back in
After device boots move contacts from backup to the contacts folder and wait for them all to appear
Make a new contact in outlook and see if it gets to the device.
    highlight calendar
    goto file import/export
    choose export to file
    choose Persoanl folder pst, next
make sure calendar is highlighted and choose subfolders if you have them, next
save to desktop with a name you can remember, Finish
    Click ok on screen popup
Go to view, arange by events
    delete all entries.
close outlook and any word files, open outlook back up after 15 seconds.
    Then
    goto file import/export
import from another program or file, next
    choose Persoanl folder pst, next
    find the file and import
    Choose highlight calendar and Finish
Change view back to what you want and try again.

    Hi,
I've had my T410s for almost a year now and lately its been starting to get extremely slow, which is odd since it used to be so fast.
Just by opening one program, Outlook, or IE or Chrome, just one window, it will start to get extremely slow and on task manger I can clearly see the CPU usage at 100% or very near.
Also another thing I noticed was the performance index on the processor dropped from 6.8 to 3.6!!!
I did a clean Windows 7 Pro 64Bit install, I have all Windows and Lenovo updates installed and the problem persits
What is happening and what should I do??
    Thank you

Hi Brandon045 and welcome to the community,
Is your problem anything like this thread ?
What antivirus are you running?  Any 3rd party firewalls?  You might want to open your resource monitor and see what the processor usage is when this happens.
