W520 auto brightness + color calibrator?

Having just purchased my first lenovo laptop, I'm already eyeing my next one. One of the bits of info that I'm having trouble finding is whether or not the w520 has an ambient light sensor to automatically adjust the screen brightness when moving from a well lit area to a dark room. This is something that is missing from my L512, but a feature I have and rather enjoy on my HP 8530w. So does the w520 have it?
Another option that I'm considering is the color calibrator... for $60 one can say that you can't go wrong, but through my reading of posts on this forum, quite a few people reported not getting accurate colors when performing calibrations in different enviorments, such as well lit areas. Also this being a laptop that is operated in different enviorments, wouldn't the color calibration have to be reset each time the user chooses to change brightness? Seems like way too much effort for not much result. I know saving $60 on a $2000 laptop may seem silly, but personally I'd rather not have a useless feature. If my understanding about the color calibrator are incorrect, please tell me. A color calibrator is not something I have on my current laptop, so I don't really see it as a "must have" feature.

Thanks guys... just placed my order today I decided not to get the color calibrator..... and plan on growing up and not giving a hoot about "ambient light sensors"... Optimus played a big part in the decision... and the Dell M4600 was more than $500 more in the same specs that I ordered. I'm suprised Dell is still in business. The m4600 may have a lower starting price, but don't be fooled.... they get you on the upgrades. Like the i7 extreme (the processor I got) Dell wants $850 while lenovo wants $650. Click a few upgrades and the Dell is at $3000... which is way above my budget. The  8560w didn't have optimus so I dind't even consider it.

  • W520 External Color Calibrator stopped working with updated Pantone v1.1 software

    Can someone from Lenovo help me with this issue? Lenovo updated the color calibrator software in Aug 2012. They broke an external color calibrator working. L1/2 has been completely unhelpful. I also escalated to customer service with little result except that they say it is not Lenovo software and they do not have to support it! Unacceptable, the software isprovided by Lenovo. Lenovo doc also says an external color calibrator is supported. Lenovo needs to take responsibility for fixing this. Here are the email chains. I really want a refund or someone to ensure this package that Lenovo distributes is fixed!

    I do not want this case closed and disagree. This is Lenovo provided software and according to Lenovo an external calibrator is supported. I want someone to take responsibility for getting this fixed. Lenovo has provided this software and needs to work with the vendor to ensure it works. Who do I need to speak to in management?     I have the internal calibrator I purchased with my W520 and also an external calibrator from x-rite. The device is an i1 Display 2. The external calibration is what fails with the updated calibrator software package.

    Hi Doris,    Thanks for your time, re: case 184142. Can we get this package fixed? Jeremy’s response below just makes no sense to me, same as that call center in Atlanta is so problematic. I work in IT and when I phone that call center I really wonder sometimes whether I am even speaking with another IT person on the other end of the line. These are Thinkpad, mines is an expensive one, and I am very upset that this is the level of support I get (especially after upgrading my warranty even!). Please see what you can do. This was working OK with the v1.0 of the software (no longer on the w520 driver page). The error message is "There was an error loading the specified profile.     I just left you a voice mail. One of the reasons I bought this laptop was for 3d photography. If I cannot use an external color calibrator and display then the laptop is not fit for purpose for the reasons I bought it. This software is ONLY available from Lenovo. According to Lenovo’s own doc, and the software’s doc, an external color calibrator is SUPPORTED. Lenovo needs to step to the plate and fix this. Not ME. If Lenovo needs to go to Pantone, or x-rite, then they Need to do that. Lenovo provided software that is not available to the public from x-rite or Pantone, and the software is to support Lenovo provided hardware (least so far as the internal calibrator), this software ALSO supports an external calibrator for use with an external display. The software supports both internal and external, and I would like to use my external display for 3d photography. This needs to be fixed please.
    What are we going to do to resolve this? At his point of the runaround I’ve been getting I would like a complete refund.

    As you know the ‘software’ purchase is by virtue of purchasing the laptop with the color calibrator. Are you saying you will refund my cost for the calibrator? I don’t think you quite get how much time I have spent with support with this laptop. I have had multiple issues with the it. The calibrator, failed BT adapter, Sudden Shutdown syndrome (where the machine would just shutoff on its own –well documented in the Lenovo forums and I have at least a dozen emails on this issue) as well as many issues with the Displayport connection and an external 3d display for which I spent months working with Nvidia to resolve. This laptop has wasted a huge amount of my time. The support has been atrocious.
    I would like a refund for 1. The laptop 2. The external color calibrator I cannot use because the software from Lenovo does not work (this package is NOT available from x-rite as well –It is sold to Lenovo). I have a receipt for the color calibrator and would be happy to provide that.

  • How to Force the Display to be On? (W520, for Color Calibration Purpose)

    Hi,
    I am trying to get the color calibration to work on Linux on my W520 and the color detector seems to work with dispcalGUI. However, when I close the lid of the laptop, the LCD always turns off. I verified that it is not caused by either acpid or the thinkpad_acpi kernel module by unloading them. I cannot find a BIOS option for this either.
    How can I force the display to stay on when I close the lid?

  • Auto Color Calibration export fail

    Hi!
    When I export to uncompressed 10bit and select Automatic Color Calibration I get this lovely color field (see attached), but I don't get my video.
    When I deselect Auto Color Calibration it exports the video with no trouble- but quicktime pumps up the gamma. 
    I tried the QuickTime_Gamma.ilut (and deselected auto color calibration) and the export simply fails.
    Any tips to fix these export issues?

    . i have the same problem with speed grade ...i have imported canon 5d footage with cinestyle picture style...in osx preview or quicktime looks like in camera very flat but after import in speed grade it looks like standard picture style ...i tried to calibrate with default color profile from my macbook pro (after conversion from icc/icm to cube file with DispcalGUI as Alex Meija..described here ) but nothing happen when i select the cube profile in calibration..i think this is a bug inside Speed Grade i can't use it...i m back to colorista ii in AE..
    the single profile in calibration that looks nearly like original footage is when i select gamma 1.8 but is not ok

  • W520 - Color Calibrator won't work.

    Hello guys, I'm stuck. I want to calibrate the monitor through the Color Calibrator Tray that always complains that the monitor needs new profiling. When I start the application and I shut the laptop to run the first test it says "No connection possible". I do not find drivers or any other things. Could it be - that the hardware isn't installed although the Lenovo System Update installed the Calibrator Tools? I have Lenovo Model Type: 4282RD4

    I had a bit of a problem getting this colour calibrator to work when my new W520 arrived a few weeks ago.
    I am by no means an expert on this subject, so, take what I say with a grain of salt.
    It appears to me that the software that actually calibrates the colour does not come from Lenovo's website.  I went to this website: X-Rite Pantone Calibrator and downloade a small application from there.  I installed it, and now the calibrator works fine.  Below is a picture showing the product I downloaded.

  • Color Calibration / New Macbook Displays?

    Can the new glass, glossy displays on the MacBook and MacBook Pro systems be color calibrated (e.g., using Colorvision's Spyder or Pantone's Huey calibration tools)?
    I was under the impression from Apple that only the matte displays on the MacBook Pro's were capable of proper color calibration. However, it does not appear that a matte screen is even an option now.

    Not sure about the specificity of those devices myself, but IMO the colors on LCDs are not constant, especially at slight viewing angles, so calibration doesnt really do much. Unless you position yourself in the EXACT same position every time, you will get slightly different colors, contrasts, brightness, etc.

  • Color calibrating monitor

    Hello, I am new to the pro photography/editing world and I am looking for recommendations for monitor color calibration systems.  I am currently using a 13 inch macbook air.  There are so many on the market I don't know where to start.  I am looking for something that can automatically adjust the calibration for whatever light I happen to be sitting in at the moment- perhaps something with a sensor?  I am not trying to break the bank.  I see that the Spyder4 and X-Rite are popular.  If you can give me your recommendations/model name that would be great!!

    Generally, you have the right idea in that your working environment will influence your perception. But an automatic adjustment of your calibration introduces so many uncontrollable factors that it's practically unworkable. It will only confuse you. Some calibrators have an option to adjust display brightness automatically, but the general advice is to disable that.
    Concentrate on controlling your environment as far as you can. It's much more important to tune your calibration targets so that you get a good match to printed output. Ideally, screen white point should be a visual match to paper white - and this is where the environment will influence your perception. Similarly for contrast/black point. Start at 120 cd/m² and 6500K, and a contrast range (if available) of around 350:1. Adjust as needed to get a match.
    Some will probably say a laptop display is not worth calibrating at all. I disagree, but don't expect too much. One basic problem is that most laptop displays are TN-based with very restricted viewing angles, to the point where the top of the screen is too dark and the bottom washed out. But if you get a calibrator now you still have that if you decide to get a better monitor later.
    To be specific, I'd recommend the x-rite i1 Display Pro at around $200. This is generally the best third-party calibrator currently on the market. A more inexpensive solution is the ColorMunki Display, which uses the same sensor but somewhat restricted software. The Spyders are good too, but not quite as reliable and consistent at the same price point.

  • IPad Air brightness changing with auto brightness off.

    I Have an iPad Air and the brightness is set to maximum and auto brightness is turned off.  After using the ipad the ipad brightness will increase dramatically and stay like this for anything up to five min, then it goes and reverts back to what it was. This all happening with auto brightness off. It's not overly dull and somewhat bright but after seeing the brightness go up further it looks a lot better. I have rest the ipad, reset the settings, checked the auto lock feature and calibrated the auto brightness feature. The only thing I haven't done is a fresh install of the Current iOS 7.1.2
    Any suggestions as to why this is happening would be appreciated or if anyone has encountered the same problem.

    Reset  ( No Data will be Lost )
    Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
    Wait for the Apple logo to Appear...
    Usually takes about 15 - 20 Seconds... ( But can take Longer...)
    Release the Buttons...

  • Color calibration bars are printing

    I am printing on an Epson Stylus Pro 4800. I am using Photoshop CS2 (version 9.0.2)and have the Color Settings set at North American Prepress2 which was recommended for using ICC settings. I have the printer set to "No Color Adjustments" (i.e. let Photoshop control the color).
    Each time I send an image to print, the printer is printing color calibration bars then ejecting the sheet. The image is printing on the second sheet. At $2.50 per sheet (fine art paper), I can't afford to waste the paper. Does anyone know how to turn the color calibration bars off. I have already checked the Output Options in the print dialog box and the calibration box is unchecked.

    Thanks for the response. Since I didn't know if this was a Photoshop setting or a printer setting, I also emailed Epson. As it turns out it was a setting on the printer's internal menu. The "Auto Nozzle Check" had been turned on which forces the printer to recalibrate the nozzle spray.
    If anyone else runs into this problem, here is the fix:
    1.) Press Menu twice, screen will display "Printer setup, Platen Gap"
    2.) Press the up arrow four times, screen will display "Auto Nozzle Check"
    3.) Press menu once, you should see "Auto Nozzle Check, *On"
    4.) Press the down arrow once, you should see off
    5.) Press the menu button once an asterisk should appear next to the word off
    6.) Press pause to go back to ready, the auto nozzle check is now disabled.
    Note: You may also turn off "Auto Cleaning".

  • Auto-brightness Won't Turn off after Win 8.1 update

    I have a Y510P, and I got the Win 8.1 update about a month ago. Since then, my screen auto-dims whenever the average color of the screen is darker than plain white. So every time I am on a website that has a picture (like Facebook), as soon as I scroll to it, my entire screen dims. Also, I cannot watch videos without my laptop being plugged in because the screen is too dark to watch it on.
    When my laptop is plugged in, I have no issues. Also, even after the brightness is decreased, it tells me that my brightness is turned up all the way.
    I went into the advanced settings in control panel and have auto-brightness disabled, but it isn't helping. I tried accessing the NDIVIA settings to see if it's in there, but all I can access are simple controls, none of which affect brightness.
    Is there anything I can do to fix this?

    Don't get your hopes up too high that this version will yield a better calibration of the FHD panel. The calibration result on 6500K still has a greenish cast on my two systems. I ound up using another user's profile that was created with an external calibrator. The results are much, much better than the ones developed with the Pantone 1.1 program.

  • Pantone Color Calibrator Will Not Launch

    I have a ThinkPad W530 with color sensor and Pantone Color Calibrator. It has worked just fine since I got the computer brand-new over a year ago. For the last week or so, my color calibrator has failed to launch when I click on the "ThinkPad Display needs to be re-profiled" notification. I get the spinning icon, but after a few moments it just disappears. I've tried doing a restore, and chosen a time-point before I think this happened. But the system refuses to go back to that restore point because it "can't find a file." What the ????? I have not deleted any files from the system folders, I can only believe that one of my automatic updates has screwed this up. Of course, the message does not tell me what *kind* of file is missing.
    I'm attempting a download and re-install of the Pantone Color Calibrator Program
    pantone_color_calibrator_setup_v1_2_0_6455.exe from this page: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.p​age?DocID=DS015010.
    Hoping that will work, but has anyone else encountered this issue? And what did it turn out to be?
    I'll report back on the results of the re-install, and thanks for any pother assistance.

    Well, what the Color Calibrator program really does is to create an ICC profile for your monitor, and you can manually set each profile you've created by:
    Right clicking on your desktop - select Screen Resolution - Advanced Settings and finally the Color Management Tab.
    In the Color Management window, you can see all the ICC profiles that have been created by the Color Calibrator, as well as the default ICC profile for the ThinkPad LCD. You can add remove these at your own leisure.

  • Color Calibrator can't work properly due to display not filling screen.

    I have a Thinkpad W520 with the HD 1920x1080 display and the color sensor. I tried to run the Color Calibrator application but it always runs to completion but cannot process the measurements. So I opened the lid in the middle of a calibration and discovered that the color screen that is supposed to be viewed by the sensor is not full screen, thereby preventing the sensor from measuring the color. How can I set the graphics so that this app will display full screen when it runs? Thanks.

    Yes I am. But I just solved the problem. I had adjusted my display to show text, icons, etc at 150% of normal resolution. Somehow it was causing the application to display only a partial screen. I set the magnification to 125% and now the color calibrator works fine.

  • IPhone 5 with iOS 8 - Auto Brightness too dim / dark

    Hi all,
    I just updated my iPhone 5 to iOS 8 and the auto brightness makes the screen too dark and hard to read.  This was not an issue with iOS 7 on my phone.  I've tried using some of the calibration tips online, but none seem to help.
    When I am outside, it's fine, it will automatically adjust the brightness all the way up.  The issue is inside, then the auto-brightness will make the screen too dim to be able read very well.
    I know I could turn off the auto brightness feature and manually adjust the brightness, but I really liked the feature with iOS 6 and iOS 7.
    Is anyone else having this issue?  Any tricks I could do to fix this, or is this just an issue with iOS 8 on iPhone 5s?  It would be nice if Apple gave us more control with auto brightness, like maybe letting us set the min and max brightness when it is on auto.
    I did see this post from jedi31780 where his iOS 8 auto brightness isn't adjusting at all, but other than that, I haven't see any other posts online about this yet.

    Thanks!  I went into settings under brightness when I was in a room where I felt the iPhone was too dim and I moved the brightness up till I was happy with it. it now uses that as a baseline and adjusts from there instead of where it was before, so no longer too dim. I thought I already tried that before, but either I adjusted it again to thy the calibration steps, or maybe I adjusted it from the "control center" screen and maybe that one doesn't save.
    Either way, all is good now. Thanks for the tip!

  • Auto Brightness and Notification Sound Problems

    It seems after I upgraded to iOS6, my auto brightness as well as the "click" sound when I shut my smartcover is no longer working. Also, it seems as if my notification sounds are not working properly either.  I've checked my settings and everything is on as it should be. Oh, and I'm experiencing this on the new iPad 32GB. HELP!!!!

    I, too, am having difficult is with my Galaxy S6 contact specific message tone as well as vibration pattern. I have multiple LED colors for different items. I use the fingerprint for security and no issues there. Sure hope Verizon comes out with an answer soon. Don't like the Samsung message app, but may be forced to use it, so I can signify different vibrations/tones.
