Want to add a 2TB internal hard drive, any suggestions?

Hi bgardnerG5, and a warm welcome to the forums!
WD Caviar Black 2 TB Internal hard drive...

A WD Caviar Bue would do also, but only has a 3 year warranty, the Black has a 5 year warranty.
The "Green" drives aren't really suited for a Boot drive.

The Apple article will transfer everything from one volume to another.  Doing what you want is not simple, unfortunately.
See Transferring Home Folders not on a Startup volume, especially scenario #1 in the gray box there.
That's just recently reworded and revised; please advise if it's not clear or you have problems with it.

  • Can I add a third internal hard drive?

I have a G4 Quicksilver with the original 80 G drive, and a second internal hard drive of 100 G that I added to the Drive Position 3 slot several years ago.
I would like to add a third internal hard drive (video files, backup, and all that) using Drive Position 2. I have looked all over the web without a clear answer. Is it possible to add another ATA internal drive, or must I settle for an external drive via Firewire 800?

Well, I can explain what each option will do for you, but it all depends on what you need and what you are willing to spend.
The quickest and easiest option is to use the ATA-3 bus. If you are streaming video directly to the drive and need something fast, then I wouldn't recommend this. But if you are using it as storage for video files, then this would be fine. Basically the ATA-3 bus is not high performance and will show through to be a little slower, but for storage this isn't really an issue. It depends on what you are using it for...
The next easiest option would be to buy an external firewire drive. Since you already have the firewire 800 card, you may as well get one. Firewire 800 is pretty fast, boasting an 800 mbit/sec (or 66.6 MB/s) transfer speed. It will probably seem pretty similar in speed to the internal drives. The only drawback is that it is external...some people don't care about externals, but for me, I like it all internal. No fuss. But that's up to you. I had a firewire drive for a little while, but the enclosure failed in a year so I just pulled the drive out and mounted it internally. Runs a little faster now...
The last option would be to pull one of your PCI cards and get a ATA or SATA controller card. This is the most expensive option, but would probably be the highest performer. Drives hooked up to a controller card will seem a little faster, but for the most part will be pretty similar to your main ATA bus. The bus is not the problem and has never been the problem-the drives themselves are the bottleneck. Think about it this way: A drive has a peak transfer rate of 150 MB/sec (just for illustration.), and is connected to a bus that can transfer up to 300 MB/sec. How much speed will you gain if you move the drive over to a bus that can transfer up to 9,999,999,999,999 GB/sec? Haha. None! The bottleneck is the drive transfer speed, not the bus transfer speed. So the speed gains you will get from a controller card will be minimal, unless you get faster spinning drives (7,200, 10,000 or 15,000 RPM drives). The main way a controller card allows you to speed up transfer rates is by setting up a RAID. I doubt you want or need a RAID, and can cost a lot, so I won't go into that.
Just remember that the controller card is basically overkill if all you need is one extra drive. Either hook up a drive to the ATA-3 or go with an external firewire drive since you already have the firewire 800.

  • I have an external hard drive set up as a Time Machine backup on my IMac. I want to add a second external hard drive and put my Aperture Photo Library on it. Is there a way to have the photos on this second hard drive automatically back up to the Time Mac

I have an IMac with an external hard drive set up as  a Time Machine for automatic backups. I want to add a second external hard drive and load my Aperture Photo Library on to it so that the library can be shared by both me and my wife. Is there a way to automatically backup the photo library that will be on the second hard drive to the Time Machine hard drive?

Open System Preference > Time Machine
    Click Options....
Ckick on external disk in list and hit the - button below the list to remove from the Exclusion list

Can i add a normal usb driver?
Yes, but be sure that the drive is formatted correctly for Mac in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
I will see it as an external drive in the time capsule network?
The drive will appear as a shared network drive, like the Time Capsule.
It will work as fast than time capsule?
No, the drive will operate at about half or 50% of the speed of the Time Capsule.

  • HT4718 I want to install a new internal hard drive for my Macbook (13in, Late 2009) and restore to factory settings. However, I want to keep my Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

I want to install a new internal hard drive for my Macbook (13in, Late 2009) and restore to factory settings.  However, I want to keep my Mac OS X Snow Leopard., which I downloaded from the app store. How can I restore computer with the updated OS?

What I did on our two computers was partition the hard drive so that both Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion can be used on the computers. This allowed me to be able to retain/use older applications and games on the Snow Leopard partition. This will allow you to do a clean install of Mountain Lion on the newly created partition. The Mountain Lion installer has a button that allows you to select another drive so you don't install it over Snow Leopard. I cleverly name one partition Snow Leopard and the other one Mountain Lion so I wouldn't confuse the two (I never claimed to be smart).
To partition, you need to have sufficient free hard drive space (I suggest 50 GB minimum). Boot off the Snow Leopard DVD or the disks that came with the computer and use Disk Utility to partition your hard drive into two partitions. If you plan to make Mountain Lion your primary OS, then you can reduce the size of the Snow Leopard partition so most of the free hard drive space is available for Mountain Lion. While booted off the disk, you can install Snow Leopard on the partition you want it on.
Restart and download Mountain Lion, remembering to select the correct partition before installing. I would make a copy of the installer and move it out of the Applications folder because the installer self destructs.
After getting all that sorted out, I found that while booted in Mountain Lion I could access the Snow Leopard partition. That allowed me to drag files and applications from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. Applications that won't work with Mountain Lion will be grayed out with a slash through them.

  • I have an early 2008 Mac Pro and want to install a 3TB internal hard drive. Is this compatible? The manual indicates 1 TB per bay, but I have already installed two 2 TB hard drives in two other bays, and have had no problems. Any suggestions?

    RE: SATA Bus speed:
Typical Rotating drives available today, whatever their SATA spec, can source data off the spinning platters no faster than about 125MBytes/sec.
SATA 3 is rated at 6G bits/sec, which theoretically is about 750 Mega Bytes/sec
SATA 2 is rated at 3G bits/sec, which is theoretically about 375 Mega Bytes/sec
SATA 1 is rated at 1.5G bits/sec, which is theoretically about 187.5 Meg Bytes/sec
None of the SATA Busses is a bottleneck for consumer Rotating drives you can buy today. Trying to speed up the SATA Bus will not provide any real-world performance increases for Rotating Drives.

  • Time machine can not select my internal hard drive any more.

    Hi all
Time machine can not select my internal hard drive any more. I only can back up external disks. Does anyone know how to fix this?
    All answers are much appreciated

I don't know the answer but I have the same thing happen. I have two external drives I use for backup. Sometimes it can see one and sometimes another. Then sometimes it can't see either one.  I will take one out for a while then plug it back in and then it may see it.  Maybe it's a cable issue or something but I will be curious to hear what someone more knowledgeable says.

Cannot uninstall cs6 bad hard drive, any suggestions?
    THank you

Thank you for the Adobe contact. They connected me to the chat link and the Adobe tech Support rep sent me a License Recovery download link (attached) http://download.macromedia.com/pub/support/tools/LicenseRecovery111.dmg.
I have 10.10.1 Yosemite. When I open the download folder and click on the LicenseRecovery.app it shows up on the dock but it nothing happens. I cannot quit the app only Force Quit. I have restarted the mac and that did't help.
Adobe chat suggested I uninstall CS5.5/6 and re-install but why would that have anything to do with the app opening?
Any suggestion is greatly appreciated, again.
    Thank you

  • I want to install a new internal hard drive in my iMac

    I have a 17" 2.0GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo

    1. I want to double check that this hard drive is comptatible with my iMac:

    2. is there some way I can clone my current hard drive to the new one? or is it better just to start fresh?
    Many thanks,
    Tom

    Regarding your question #2
You can clone the drive if you put either the new or old HDD in an external enclosure and use software such as SuperDuper! Or CarbonCopy.
Visit www.MacSales.com OWC to see some external enclosures. OWC also has an easy way to reference which devices are compatible with you model of iMac, and how-to videos too.

  • Replacing internal hard drive - Any tips?

Hi all. I've found various posts on this but nothing covering start to end process. I'm on a PowerBook G4 15" Aluminium running osx 10.4. I've run out of space on the 90GB internal hard drive and so have bought a WD3200BEVE (320GB internal hard drive). I've also bought 1GB SD Ram to speed it all up.
I have all the required tools and instructions for swapping the drives. I also have 2 external hard drives - both connect via USB.
What do I need to do in order to be able to transfer everything from the existing internal hard drive to the new one? Is there anything I need to be specifically mindful of? Needless to say I'm looking for the most cost effective option here as have already shelled out enough on the drive and Ram.
Any pointers would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    John

If your existing external USB case has the correct drive interface (parallel ATA/IDE for 2.5inch HDs), you should be able to put your new drive in it, clone the existing internal drive onto it, then do the physical drive swap. Newer drive cases usually have a different HD interface (SATA), though.
If your external cases do not have the right HD interface, I would buy an empty Firewire HD case such as this:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Macally/PHR250CC/
as it will give you a faster external drive afterwards you can use for a bootable backup HD with your old drive. Yes, you can also just buy an external USB case if you prefer, but you can't boot from a USB drive.
If your external cases do not have the right interface, I don't know is whether it's possible to clone the internal HD to one of your existing drives, put the new, unformatted HD into the PB, boot from the OSX DVD, reformat the new internal HD, then reclone from the external to the internal. It would require running the cloning application from the external drive, and I just can't remember if that is possible. I never run into that, as I always use the correct case for the drive method.

I know, that when it comes for asking the same questionnaire in all my forums all over again..its get a little bothersome, right???
Yes it does. Once is enough.
Your Tibook only has USB 1.1 ports, not USB 2 ports. You would be insane to buy a USB drive to use with it, unless you also buy a USB 2 adapter card for your CardBus slot. But we've already been all through that with you, in one of the dozen or more threads you've started while spinning your wheels and repeating yourself for the last three weeks.
If you can only find one drive for $69.99, and $69.99 is the most you're willing to spend, then your choice is already made, and you don't need any other recommendations.
There aren't a lot of people reading or responding to questions in the Tibook Discussions any more. If you look through the forums, you'll see that it's fairly unusual for more than three or four different people to post in any given thread lately. The likelihood that you will get a wide variety of responses to any question posted here is pretty small. That's too bad, perhaps, but that's the way it is.

Yes. Windows supports external USB drives.

  • Is it possible to add a second internal hard drive to my 27" iMac?

Just wondering if the above is possible.
If so could anyone recommend which hard drives to use (which are available in the UK)
    Thanks in advance.

The Apple store might install what you buy from them, but not something you bought elsewhere.  I am not sure if they offer one of the larger capacity drives so you would have to contact the store and ask them about it.  They will charge you a premium price for the hardware.
If you are concerned about doing the drive installation, check for an Apple authorized service center close to you as they can do an installation without you having to worry about warranty.
User installation of memory and drives is allowed under the warranty, unless you break something

  • Won't recognize new internal hard drive; any suggesstions?

I am a new mac user and am trying to install a 2nd hard drive (250G Western Digital SATA WD Caviar SE- 7200 RPM- 16 mb Cache/300MB's/s) and for some reason it isn't showing up when I boot up and doesn't appear in Disk Utility. Is the drive compatable? Is there something I am not doing?

There is something else wrong if you hold down command option o f on startup and you can't boot into Open Firmware. that is the best way to clear nvram and has nothing to do with your disk drive etc as it happens much earlier and before the boot loader let alone system is present.
The whole 'system freezing' - I always start with resetting nvram, then running extended AHT, then Memtest.
    Might want to start here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/help/
It can help walk you (and us) through what steps...
#1 boot into Open Firmware to Reset NVRAM
#2 boot to your Apple Hardware Test disk using OPTION key and run tests
#3 run Memtest 4 when possible
    - MacIntouch: Bad RAM
    #4 check cables (again)
#5 Tiger is now out on DVD with 10.4.6 - updated and easier to upgrade
#6 boot into Single User Mode and run after ANY freeze or hard restart
    #6 install and use Applejack
    Instructions from MacFixit:
#7 Repair Permissions - MacFixit: Repairing Permissions demystified
    General Troubleshooting permissions
#8 boot into Single User Mode
    #9
