Welcome to the Apple user to user assistance forums
my iPhoto library and my files with originals photos wich have not been "imported" into iPhoto : menu "prefs/advanced/Import/copy in the iPhoto library is not checked".
You are running a referenced library - which is not recommended for a number of reasons including it makes things like new hard drives and computers more difficult
One way to accomplish your desired move is to use alias herder - http://www.rorohiko.com/wordpress/downloads/aliasherder/ - to convert your library to a managed library - then you can simply quit iPhoto and drag the library where ever you want it and launch iPhoto while depressing the option (alt) key and point to it
Since the key to a referenced library is that the path to the photos does not change it may be possible to move the referenced library to your internal drive leaving the original photos where they are - I've not seen this but it seems that it might work - easy to give a try - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library to the pictures folder on the internal drive and launch iPhoto while depressing the option (alt) key - if it works you have a partial solution - if it does not simply launch iPhoto with the option key and point back to the library that still exists on the EHD and delete the one you just moved to the internal drive
And note that you have imported your photos into iPhoto - you simply have not copied the originals to the iphoto library - the importing process is much more than just copying the photo - it involved updating all of the iPhoto database pointers

  • Since my last software update, my iphoto 11 will not import any photos from any source. The circle just spins...when I go to force quit, it says iphoto not responding. Backed up iphoto library, uninstalled and reinstalled iphoto. Still not working. Help!

Since my last software update, my iphoto 11 will not import any photos from any source. The circle just spins...when I go to force quit, it says iphoto not responding. Backed up iphoto library, uninstalled and reinstalled iphoto. Still not working. Help!

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

I can not enable selected photos to sync to my iphone 5. It is greyed out. I do not want to sync my entire iPhoto library.. help!

Guys, I found another user and what he said to do worked!!! I have copied the information below:
This was 1 of the things that happend to me too, the other one was that at the bottom of the itunes page were it says all the memory info, it marked that I had over 3gb of other memory wich I didn't.
Anyways what I did was to unmark the calendar, contacts etc. ( so that they wont sync with the computer ), pressed apply,  then I marked all of them again, apply again and for last I pressed Sync wich is at the bottom right coner by the apply botton.
I'm not sure that had anything to do with it but it worked, my music appeard both of my itunes playlists and the ones I bought in itunes.  Also the other memory dissapeard and it's all good.
I'm not sure this will help you but thats my 5 cents, if the problem continues its better to call customer service and ask for a technician.
Hope your problem gets solved. Have a nice day.

  • How can I move my old iPhoto library into a Referenced Library format and use that as my default?

Hi, I have been using iPhoto for photo management where all the jpegs have been living, in organized events by date and subject for some time. I recently upgraded to aperture and am using the same iPhoto library. The issue I have is that I use Carbonite for my cloud back up and I am able to look at the pictures I have on my PC with the same folder organization I have them on my PC hard drive. This is apparently not possible for iPhoto library. The only way to access a picture on the iPhoto library in the cloud is to go through the master and hope you can find the specific picture since they are not organized in a comprehensible manner (like events or folders) in there.
So the only solution I can think of is to move the current iPhoto library to a referenced image library and use that as my default library from now on. This way I get cloud access and the events will hopefully turn into folders with dates and subjects that I can continue to keep organized to satisfy my OCD tendencies.
So the question I have is that:
    1. How can I make a reference Library for Aperture/iPhoto?
    2. How do I move the current library to the Referenced Library in an Organized manner? My wish list would be a series of folders labeled with the date and the subject, like I have in my iPhoto library right now.
    3. If there is any alternative, your suggestions and recommendations would be much appreciated.
My computer: Mac Mini (Mid 2012), Lion, 16GB RAM.
    Thank you kindly,

Or is there a way to go through aperture to make a new reference library that I can move the masters into later?
you do not move the masters into a references library - you turn your current library into a referenced library.  As Terence Devlin said:
    File -> Relocate Masters
    What you should set up:
Select a folder, where you want to store your referenced files - probably on an external drive.
Decide on a hierarchical folder structure inside this folder - that is completely up to you.
Select a project from your library and use the command "File -> Relocate Masters/Originals" to move the original image files to the folder where you want to go them to. Only take care not to send two projects to the same folder.
Alternatively, if you do not care about the folder structure Aperture will use, select all images at once from the "Photos" view and let Aperture decide how to assing the folders - in the "Relocate Originals" dialoge you can specify a subfolder format.

  • How to move my entire iphoto library and all albums and mobileme galleries to my new tower?

What is the best way to move my entire iphoto library and all albums and mobileme galleries to my new tower?
I want to move it smoothly without hours of reconfiguring albums and Mobileme galleries.  Already have a timemachine backup of the older iMac with the iphoto library.

Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

  • For reasons best left unsaid, in a recent rebuild of my iMac andTime Capsule, I lost all my photos. I do however currently have them on my iPad. Is it possible to retrieve all my photos from the iPad back to iPhotos (now Photos) on my iMac?

For reasons best left unsaid, in a recent rebuild of my iMac and Time Capsule, I lost all my photos. I do however have them all currently on my iPad. Is it possible to retrieve my photos from the iPad back to iPhotos (now Photos) on my iMac?

have the photos on the iPad been taken with the iPad camera or imported using the camera connection kit?
Or have they been synced to the iPad with iTunes?
You can download any photos to your mac by connecting the iPad by USB to to your Mac and import to Phots, but this way only photos from the Camera Roll will be imported.  If your photos have been synced with iTunes, you can only mail them to your mac.
See:  iOS: Syncing photos using iTunes
You can't reimport pictures synced from your computer to your device back to your computer. You can only import pictures taken by your device, or saved to it, from your device to your computer. If you need to retrieve synced photos from your device, email the photos from the device to yourself. Then download the photos from the emails to your computer.

  • The hard drive on our laptop crashed was able to transfer all for 2 users files etc to another mac. got it fixed 80,000 photos were transferred back but iphoto library for 1 user is empty now. can this iphoto library be recovered?

The hard drive on our laptop crashed and we took it to the apple store and they said we can transfer all files photos and videos over to another mac laptop via a special cable.  We did that and everything for the two users transferred over to the other laptop fine including 80,000 photos.  We got the laptop fixed and my husband transferred everything back to our laptop.  In his profile (he’s the administrator) his iPhoto library has all 7900 of his photos in it as well as all his events and albums that he created prior to it crashing. It’s organized exactly how he had it; however, in my profile, my iPhoto library is empty.  I had over 9,000 photos in it and like 65 events and a couple of albums and it’s completely empty yet when he transferred everything back to our mac, he it showed that 80,000 photos were transferred as well.  Do you know where all those photos could possibly be stored?

Yes you can move the book but not by exporting
The book is just entries in the iPhoto database so the only way to transfer it is ot transfer the entire library it is in - you can make a "mini" library containing only one book to make the transfer easier - see Old Toad's tutorial #9 - http://oldtoadstutorials.net/No._9.html
You also can save a PDF of the book and transfer that but you can not edit pr process it

  • I have several iPhoto and aperture libraries... i want to get to one iPhoto library keeping only the latest photos. How can I do this?

Okay... I made the mistake of creating duplicate Aperture libraries because I decided I wanted to only use Aperture - then the news that Aperture is no longer going to be developed. I then confused myself and created duplicate iPhoto libraries (I can't even remember why anymore). At one point or another I have edited pictures in all of them and have no idea which pictures were edited. I just want to have one iPhoto library with the most recently edited photos and remove all the duplicates.
What is the best way to do this?
And... after doing all that, I need to keep backups of my photos on an external drive. What is the best way to do this?
    iPhoto version 9.5.1
Thank you so much for any advice you can provide!

You can merge libraries into one with Aperture 3.3. or later.
Aperture 3.3: How to use Aperture to merge iPhoto libraries
In merge-mode it will only keep the photos from one of the libraries.
And you can use Aperture to export partial libraries containing only the selected albums, projects, etc.
If you need to keep projects (books, calendars, cards) when merging your libraries, use Aperture and not iPLM:

  • Misplaced Movie Clips in iPhoto Library

    Hello
I'm hoping that you may be able to help me out with the following situation and advise me if I am on the right lines or need to stop and do something else! I have searched through the forum for similar problems and have tried to follow the suggestions found.
I fear something strange has happened, although I have been careful to heed the dire warnings about fiddling with things in the iPhoto Library folders. I include information which I think may be relevant.
Over a period of time (years!), I have imported a series of photos and 30 second video clips of music concerts from a Canon camera and they are sorted into Film Rolls. In some instances in order to remember which songs the video clips represent I have renamed the file - e.g. MVI_0052.AVI is now RTY MVI_0052.AVI. When clicking on the renamed file, it plays in QuickTime, but the name that displays at the top of the image is the original MVI_0052.AVI.
Q: Does renaming the file create a duplicate, or does it simply create a link from the renamed file to the original?
Q: Would it be better not to rename the files, but to use keywords to differentiate them? If I edit the renamed files and revert them to the original name will this help with the problem below or confuse things more?
Some of the video clips will not play when clicked on in the Film Roll; they seem to have converted from .avi to .jpeg.
If I do a search in spotlight on (for example) just the MVI_0052 tag, the original movie clip is usually found in the Movies list, often with the following location:
    /Users/myname/Pictures/iPhoto Library/2001/01/01/Originals
I can drag this clip to the Desktop, Import it into iPhoto Library, move it into the correct roll, where it retains the MVI_0052 tag. So, I now have two copies of the clip in the appropriate roll. Whichever one I click on, both play as MVI_0052. Should I delete one from the film roll? If so, which one - the MVI_0052 I just dragged in or the renamed one RTY MVI_0052?
Incidentally, the 2001 folder is vast, contains 37.8 GB and seems to have been created in August 2006. The sub-folder /Users/myname/Pictures/iPhoto Library/2001/01/01 contains an assortment of files:
    a) The majority are jpeg images of MVI files, e.g. MVI_0008.jpg; these show the jpeg icon against the file name until you click on it and then the picture (which seems to be a still of the MVI file) appears.
    b) Within this folder there are just a few genuine MVI files, e.g. MVI-0008.AVI
    c) There are also a few AVI files which have the QuickTime Player icon against the file name. These will also play when clicked on.
The file: /Users/myname/Pictures/iPhoto Library/2001/01/01/Originals contains only .AVI files and many of them.
Some of the movie files have simply disappeared. That is, they exist in the Film Roll, but nothing happens if I click on the file; a Spotlight search does not find them anywhere on the hard drive. I suspect these are lost forever and would be better deleted.
If anyone can tell me whether I am doing the right thing by dragging the .avi file from the spotlight finder location to the desktop and then importing it into the iPhoto Library again that would be really helpful. I fear it will take some time to work through all the film rolls and verify each movie clip, but I imagine this is the only way to find those that are retrievable.
I am wanting to move the iPhoto Library to a LaCie external hard drive and delete from my laptop, but before I do I think I need to sort this out. Apologies for such a long post, I have tried to give all the information that might be relevant.
Thanks for your time and interest.....and yes, I do know I should have backed it up along time ago; some lessons are learnt the painful way

Thanks Terence for your swift response.

Q: Does renaming the file create a duplicate, or does it simply create a link from the renamed file to the original?
Did you rename the File? Or add a Title to it in iPhoto. It sounds like you added a title in iPhoto, and this does not rename the file. Renaming (or titling) a pic/movie does not create a duplicate - nor is there "a link to the Original". It's simply an entry in the iPhoto database. If you want to use the title as filename then you can do that using the Share -> Export command - it's one of the options there.
So, if you title a movie "RTY - Whatever", it shows in iPhoto as that, but when played in QT it's still just 'Whatever' as the filename hasn't changed.
You are right: I simply added a Title to it in iPhoto. Thanks for clearing this up...
When you import a movie it goes to the Originals Folder and iPhoto creates a jpeg of the first frame. This is used for the thumbnail.
If anyone can tell me whether I am doing the right thing by dragging the .avi file from the spotlight finder location to the desktop and then importing it into the iPhoto Library again that would be really helpful.
It's best to search the iPhoto Library Folder from iPhoto. Spotlight finds all the versions - thumbnail, preview jpeg and the Movie. This is not especially helpful and is a source of confusion.
I'm not sure what you achieve by dragging a movie out of iPhoto and then back into it?
The reason for this is that at some point I had to rebuild the library and since then some of the video clips will not play from iPhoto. I searched the forum and read the following from Lori DiLoreto and have been trying to follow this advice.
"The thumbnails (jpeg pointer files) were made by iPhoto when the movie files were imported.
I'll tell you what happened to me when I did a library rebuild. It messed up the link between the jpg point files and the movie files.
when the rebuild of the library was done I had the jpeg pointer files pointing to nothing. When those were double clicked in iPhoto nothing would happen.
i had to navigate through the iPhoto Library folder in the finder and find all my movie clips and drag them all to the desktop. Then I had to go through my library within iPhoto and delete all the jpeg pointer thumbnails that were pointing to nothing. It was a major pain."
So I have used Spotlight to see if the movie file still exists (within Spotlight I have the search grouped by "Kind" so it is easy to see which are the Movies). If it does, I have then dragged it to the desktop and reimported it. If I do this I have 2 representations of the video clip in the film roll - the one that originally would not play now does, the one I just imported also plays. However, I am not sure which it might be safe to delete.
My aim is to get this into a fit state to save onto an external hard drive, delete and start afresh. However, it is proving to be a challenge!
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Iphoto Library Photos Disappeared

Using iphoto 8, just finished downloading photos from camera. Clicked umount on camera and disconnected mini usb from camera.
Then received msg that some events may have not been saved properly. Couldn't open pics i had just downloaded. Closed iphoto and when I reopened all my photos gone!
    Help!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Do you see anything in iPhoto, like thumbnails or empty thumbnails?
It's a damaged database file. The following may help: try the three fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select all options.
    Fix #2
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be untouched for further attempts at fixing or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
    Fix #3
Start over with a new library and import the Originals folder from your original library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
    1. Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
    2. Open the library package like this.
    3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    4. Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • Backing up iPhoto Library with DropBox

I moved my iPhoto library to DropBox in order to have a complete online backup of iPhoto (in addition to my local Time Machine backup and my SuperDuper bootable backup). The backup took a while since I have a large iPhoto library (20,000 photos, about 80 GB). What happened was that the size of the iPhoto library doubled on DropBox to 160 GB. There are a number of reasons for this (I found it too late), primarily because DropBox doesn't handle the symlinks well and creates duplicate copies of the photos in Folders called Originals, Modified, and Masters. Also my computer slowed down when I added a lot of photos to iPhoto, as it was syncing literally a couple of thousand files for every 100 pictures I added.
It seems like what I could do as an alternative to backing up the entire library is to just back up the Masters Folder to DropBox. However, I can't move the Masters Folder out of iPhoto to DropBox without breaking the iPhoto Library structure. I think I could use a symlink from the Masters Folder to DropBox, but I am not exactly sure how to do this (or whether this would work). I could also do some kind of automator script to copy the Masters folder to DropBox, but this doens't seem very efficient. I have scoured the web forums on this issue, but just don't see a good solution. It seems like a pretty fundamental issue to people with a lot of photos in iPhoto.

And the answer is that so far no one has found a good solution to cloud backup for the iPhoto library that I have seen here - If you want only the photos you could copy the masters folder to DropBox and then use image capture to get your photos off your camera adding each batch to DB and then importing to iPhoto
I go at it differently - two daily backups (Time Machine hourly and Carbon Copy Cloner making a bootable clone of my system daily) plus an occasional TM backup to an off site drive (at our vacation home) and rotating through three 32 GB SD cards so I have a year or more of the original photos on SD cards at all times
TD uses SmugMug to backup his photos along with a similar but more disciplined off site backup

  • How do I move pictures from iphoto library to my desktop so I can these use them to sell on ebay?

I recently moved pictures from my ipad to my iphoto library on my Macbook Pro computer. I want to now use these photos to sell on EBay. What are the steps I need to do to move these from one place to the other. This needs to be in laymans terms as my husband and I are new to this. Thanks for help.

Put the photos in an iPhoto album.  Use the File ➙ Export ➙ File export menu option and export them to a folder on the Desktop.  From there you can upload them to Ebay via your browser.

  • Backing up iPhoto Library on external hard drive through Time Machine

Hi - I was advised by the folks at the Genius Bar to move my iPhoto Library to an external hard drive (drive 1), and then buy a separate 1TB external hard drive (drive 2) for all of my Time Machine backups. They said I could back up the Library in drive 1 via Time Machine, to drive 2. That way, I'd have 2 spots where my photos were stored.
I can't figure out how to make sure the Time Machine is also backing up the Library in drive 1. Where do I set that up? At the Genius Bar, they insisted I could do it, but when I poke around Time Machine on my System Preferences, I can't figure out how to tell Time Machine where to find the iPhoto Library. And when I open up Time Machine, I just get the application view, not a set up view.
    Please help! Thanks!

By default Time Machine will backup all locally connected disks.  so if the iPhoto library is on a locally connected disk it will be backed up.
To double check that the disk with the iPhoto Library is not being excluded open System Preferences->Time Machine and click on the Options… button.
If the disk with the iPhoto library is in the excluded list remove it.
