Want to move this forum - any concerns?

I'd like to move this forum to the following location so that all Solaris developer forums are together in one place:
     https://community.oracle.com/community/server_%26_storage_systems/systems-development-and-management-tools/application_d…
Do you have any concerns about my doing that?  I would leave a link under the current location.
Let me know what you think.
Rick

I do not have any issue with such a move.
Development questions might actually be more appropriate if they are there instead of the current location (nested among OS functional spaces).
I've been viewing forum posts here at OTN (and in the Sun sponsored forum site before that) for more than a decade and the Solaris Development space was always a tiny bit "foreign" to all the other discussions.   I think that was due to there just not being a web location that was more development centric.
There are fewer than 800 posts in the New To Solaris Development space, compared to almost 30,000 posts combined in the functional Solaris spaces.
Edit:
I took the liberty of editing a typo in your original title for this thread...

  • Want to move TM backup from USB drive to network drive

[I tried searching and didn't see anything specific to my question.]
I have a Mac Mini backup up to an external USB hard drive and it has a history going back 7 months. It backs up to a folder Backups.backupdb. This folder resides w/ the rest of my folders on this USB HDD, it is not on it's own partition.
Now I want to 'move' this backup and history to a network drive (not a Time Capsule). I've seen methods to use Disk Utility to restore it to new drive or use Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper. (I'm familiar w/ all 3 programs btw.) However, all those methods require mounting a HDD (or partition). I can't seem to figure how to use that method to mount the backups.backupdb.
    Any ideas?

Anything you found would have said you can't do that.
When TM does network backups, it puts them in a sparse bundle, not the "normal" folder named Backups.backupdb. You cannot continue network backups in the same "sequence." Even if TM works to your network drive (which is not officially supported), it will start a whole new set of backups in a sparse bundle.
And you can't copy the Backups.backupdb folder with the Leopard Finder anyway. See #18 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum.

  • I have a new computer and want to move my Itunes libriarys to this new PC.  How do I do this .

I have a new computer and want to move my Itunes libriarys to this new PC.  How do I do this?

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
If you have an iOS device that syncs with contact & calendar data on your computer you should migrate this information too. If that isn't possible create a dummy entry of each type in your new profile and iTunes should offer to merge the existing data from the device into the computer, otherwise the danger is that it will wipe the information from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data. If you don't have any Apple devices then see HT2519 - Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store.

  • I am facing 'How do you want to use this disc' whenever I read/open any lightscribe discs having data.

    Hi,
When I insert a lightscribe DVD/CD into a lightscribe optical drive, then when I click to open the DVD, I faced this error 'How  do you want to use this disc', although the DVD was full of data. When opening these
lightscribe DVD/CD via NON lightscribe optical drive, I noticed that the DVD/CD  opened well without any problems at all.
Also, how can the System show to me 'How  do you want to use this disc' , in particular when  a DVD is non rewritable(DVD-R) and also contains data)?
Bear in mind, not all DVDs/CDs were not detected. However, only full lightscribe discs' (having data)
However, even blank lightscribe discs were detected without problems. When insert a lightscribe disc having data, then I faced that error. However, when inserting  blank lightscribe discs I found that the disc were opened.  Also,
non lightscribe discs were opened well.
When checking the device manager, I didn't see any issue with DVD/CD drive. If there were a problem unrecongnising, then I would have seen 'a remarkable mark' in front of it.
Note: I have faced this problem after trying formating a rewritable CD inserted onto the drive. Althouthg the format failed, all data on the disc was deleted. Anyway, after that, then inserting full-lightscribe  discs are unregonised
Do you think the problem wth my optical drive. IF so, I would be saying why it wasn't happened with all other non lightscribe discs. If my lightscrib discs were corrupted, then why would they have opened well on another laptop.
    I have done:
Press the Windows logo key+R to open the Run dialog box.
Type devmgmt.msc in the Run dialog box, then press Enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow
In Device Manager, expand DVD/CD-ROM drives, right-click the CD and DVD devices, and then clickUninstall.
When you are prompted to confirm that you want to remove the device, click OK.
    Restart the computer.
But the same prolbem is existing.
yes there is a virtual CloneDrive program installed on my PC, however, there is no any CD mounted into it. Even if a CD was mounted into Virtual Clondrive, there would be no problem at all, because the virtual CloneDrive is used to only
mount ISO disc images into it, and not physical discs.
Any I have do what you have said, when inserting a light-scribe disc having data, then I open it, I found this
NOTE: in the above screen shot there is a lightscribe DVD having data inserted. However, in the screen shot below, there  a ightsrbe DVD not having data inserted. In the first screen shot, the disc is not reconginsed by Windows, however, in
    the second is recognised.
Even when I have inserted a lightscribe disc not having data(empty), it opened well regardless of  what virutal CloneDrive is enabled or disabled.
But when cliced on my problem didn't solve,
A man should convert his anger and sadness into strength to continue living in this life.

    Hi,
The product Name of my computer is: HP Pavilion dv6-6093ex Entertainment
    Notebook PC support
The number of my computer is : LM610EA#A2N.
Could anyone please at this splendid forum take some of their precious time
out to really reply my questions and solve my problems?
    FIRST OF ALL:
My HP Pavilion Laptop is about 3 years old.
    My
sister's Dell Inspiron laptop is 3 years old.
My HP lapotp is well-cared, as opposed to my sister's Inspiron Dell laptop,
which is always thrown in dust without caring at all. Also, its battery is
always inserted even when it is fully charged while the laptop is plugged in to
    the main power supply.
However, my laptop is either used on only battery, or on plugin. Also, it is
    kept from the dust.
But, I really found that the battery of the Dell laptop
still lasts about three and half hours, and there is no problem cooling fan is
    not oproperly preporly.
I only remember one thing differently done on my laptop battery which is I
charged it fully, then I stored it without using it for about four months, then
when I reused it, I found it got worse over time. I.e. first time of using it
after storing,I found it empty, then I charged it again fully, however, then it
lasted about 2 hours, then 1 and half hours, next an hour, now it is only
lasting about 20 minutes without performance. If there is high performance, then
    the computer shuts down suddenly.
    My problem is follows:::
First: Whenever I inserted any Containing Data OR Data
CD/DVD-R LightScribe discs, I found that HP optical driver was
unable to read them. When clicking on the optical disc drive
'duble-click', then I find that disc opens as this way(NOT: With a CD/DVD player
    is grayed out)
Blank Or Used CD, DVD±R,RW lightscirbe is unable to be
read:(clicking on it let it Open like a USB FlashDrive or With a CD,DVD player:
NOTE: with CD/DVD Player is grayed out)
Used CD/DVD±R/RW Non-LightScribe disc opens normal:
Blank CD,DVD±R,RW Non-LightScribe opens normal(Opens like a USB FlashDrive or

I cleaned the drive, discs, and so on.
I have uninstalled the all third-party data recording software.
I have uninstalled the Cyber DVD suite, lightscribe system software which
came pre-installed with my HP pavilion Notebook.
I have recovered my system from the Factory Recovery discs.
I have tried opening all those LightScibe discs not opening on my HP optical
drive, on a Dell optical drive, and all of them were opened well, although Dell
optical drive did not have a lightscribe feature at all., nor third party disc
    recording software
However, the problem is still with opening the discs LIGHT-SCRIBE
    Thus, my questions are:
How to determine if the drive is corrupted and needs to be replaced with
    another one.
I think there something needed to be done on the BIOS Of my HP
laptop[[[A similar problems happened on my Desktop computer's optical
drive which is as follows:::(ALL discs are opened as empty by Optical Drive of
My Desktop Computer) ---while my optical drive of my desktop was connected to
the primary slave IDE, and the HDD was connected to the
primary master IDE, the optical drive and hard disk are functioning
well. However, I remember that while burning an image with Nero essential V: 5,
something went wrong, and then the Optical Drive of My Desktop Computer
    (HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH22NP20) became NOT recognised/Installed on
BIOS, although it was still shown on the device manager as a
recognised device. Also, it was listed on my computer, however, when entering a
disc(blank or with data) into the drive, I found it was not recognised, and it
opened empty(no files at it), although it contains data. Thus, I decided to boot
to BIOS, and clicked on 'Autodetection for IDE', then I found that only HDD was
still shown as installed on BIOS. However, the optical drive was not. Th I tried
clicking on it on BIOS and then clicking on 'enter' to try to let the device be
re-recognized. However, that made no difference. I had to take part my computer
,and then reconnected the optical drive onto the secondary slave
IDE , and let HDD connected to the same primary master IDE.
Then, I found that the problem solved and all discs became being read
normally. Aslo, optical drive became installed on BIOS]]]

    How much does it cost?

Another way. You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive (works the same with an SD card) into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

  • I want to move the location of my iTunes Library db file but keep the media in it's existing location. Is this possible?

I want to move the location of my iTunes Library db files to a new location without moving the whole lot, including my Media file [Music, Films etc etc files]... in this case I want to move the Library db files to my iCloud Folder so I have a backup of the Library db File [ good idea huh :-) ]  and I should be able to open iTunes whether the media can be seen at that point or not.  is it possible to just move the Library files and then tell iTunes where they are so it can launch iTunes?
Is this just a case of cut and paste the Library files to the new location, then updating config in iTunes?
This may be a silly question but in my book, no question is silly if it needs to be asked.
    Any ideas, advise welcomed.

Thanks Chris but I think I have not explained it well enough.
    This...
I am using an iCloud Folder on my local Mac hard drive. iCloud Folder syncs with iCloud and works like a backup. It is a subscription service that Apple offer.
You should be adding them to iCloud, not your local drive.
Yes I understand how it works.
The iCloud folder on the local drive is (and should be) managed by the iCloud drive/OS, not you.
You are simply trying to work around iCloud drive.
I just want to know if I can move the iTunes Library cb files to a new folder/location on my macs local hard drive
... and tell iTunes where to look for the Library so that it can launch / startup
The iTunes library.itl file is part of the iTunes library.
I already back up my actual media files (music etch) by other methods.
You should back up the entire iTunes folder, not just the media.
If you wna to backup the iTune slibrary.itl, just copy it to the iCloud drive on the left side of aFinder window.
You don't need to go (and shouldn't) into the iCloud folder in your user library.
This is what the "guru" will tell you.

I want to move my photos from iPhoto to Time Capsule to make space on my computer.  What's the best means of doing this?

    Please do not do this.
The Time Capsule was designed for your backups.....not as an everyday hard drive. Access to the Time Capsule is slow.
If there is any loss of connection between iPhoto and the iPhoto library when you are reading or writing, the entire iPhoto library is easily corrupted.
The chances of corruption are even more likely if you are using wireless on the computer.
And....even if you decide to risk this....if you move your "original" iPhoto library to the Time Capsule.....how will you make backups of the library?
The only copy of the library will be on the Time Capsule....you have no backups.....when, not if, the Time Capsule has a problem.
Simply stated, I would never do this with any important data that you cannot afford to lose. Please post in the iPhoto support area if you need to confirm this.

my daughter wants to move some of her music she bought on itunes for her shuffle to her new ipod touch.  how do i get this going?

The music should still be in her iTunes Library - the one she uses to put music on the Shuffle. Simply connect the new iPod to that iTunes library, make the choices she wants for syncing the music to the iPod (which I guess, may now include putting all her music onto the iPod, since it has more storage capacity) and press Sync.
Future Syncs with that Library will cause any changes of the Library to be copied to the iPod. Note that music is (or should be) copied to the iPod, not moved. There are two reasons for having the music in the Library:
    makes it easier to put the music onto a newer iPod, such as now;
if or when the iPod needs a Restore, which will delete everything from the iPod, you will need to copy "the Library" back onto the same iPod.

  • Using this forum to express concerns

It is a complete waste of time posting anything on this forum as it is modded by BT staff who give you the same drivel that you get if you phone, email or write to them.

    Having read your original post:-
"Having (like my neighbours) lost one phone line yesterday I have now lost my fax line to the above engineers. BT seem to think it is acceptable to leave their customers without landlines for a week ( fault will be rectified by the 26th of May they tell me!!!). I don't seem to remember being allowed to settle my not inconsiderable account late!!!!"
You seem to be just wanting to rant about the lack of urgency with BT repairs service and not asking for anything to be done so you would appear to have been lucky in getting any reply let alone an informative one which sets out the time scales that BT/Openreach work to.

I am based in South Africa, and it seems like we cannot purchase any music or movies from itunes. Apparently it is not supported by our itunes store, what ever that might mean. Unfortunately the staff in all of the i-shops in South Africa are pretty much unhelpfull, unlike the service i received while in the US. Any suggestions on how to by-pass this seemingly boycot of the South African users?

To use the iTunes Store in a country you need a credit card issued in that country, billed to an address in that country, and also be physically present in that country when using the store.  Basically all you have access to would be anything offered in South Africa unless you move to a different country.
It's the media owners who get to tell Apple where and where they cannot sell their media.  I'm sure Apple would be happy to take your money but  if the media companies are not happy then they can say no to sales in SA.
Even if there were a way to bypass this we certainly couldn't tell you on this forum because it would violate the Terms of use of this web site and get the whole topic removed.

Can I do this with any Apple cloud product or should I look elsewhere for cloud products? Will it be cheaper/easier just to buy another external HD to back up my existing external HD? Thanks

I don't know if this is me adding files to iTunes when the external wasn't connected
    it is.
is it OK to just keep deleting that library on the Air?
    i wouldn't - at least not until i

consolidate my library via file > library > organize library
The ntfs hasn't seem to be causing any problems, but I've always wanted to know.
in order for your Mac to write to NTFS drives, it needs some help by installing e.g. the NTFS 3G driver. apparently that or something similar is installed on your Mac already. preferably, it would be formatted for Mac but then windows machines would need to have e.g. MacDrive installed to recognize the drive.

Is there anyway to move my library from one accont to another from the itunes side?

Media is permanently tied to whatever account was used to purchase it.  There is currently no possible way to change the account it is tied to.

You should be able to accept this message, it will cause existing music, photos (not camera roll) and videos (also excluding those in camera roll) to be removed and replaced with those from this computer. All other user data on the iPad will be unaffected.

  • * If you want to install 9i on any new linux (RH 7.1, Debian Woody, etc) read this *

A lot of people are having issues installing Oracle 9i on the newer distributions..
I do not want to take credit for this fix, as I found it in one of the other topics in this forum (I cant remember who posted it), but it a few replies down and I decided to make it the main post here ..
The problem with the installation, as was stated in the other post, is with the linking, and the version of 'ld' on your system (/usr/bin/ld) .. The newer distro's come with a patched ld (which was said to be a GLIBC 2.1 emulation patch for Oracle 8i) .. This ld is patched in RedHat 7.1, and Debian 2.3 Unstable/Woody (the distro I use)..
To install Oracle clean .. go to ftp.gnu.org (or mirror), and go into gnu/binutils, and grab binutils-2.10.tar.gz ... run a configure on it (no parameters necessary), and run make ..
When its done compiling everything, make a copy of your original ld (cp /usr/bin/ld /usr/bin/ld.orig), and copy the newly compiled one to that location .. (cp ld/ld-new /usr/bin/ld) .. run the oracle installer (it should install and link without error), and then copy your original ld back (cp /usr/bin/ld.orig /usr/bin/ld) ..
Worked perfectly for me on three installs (under Debian 2.3 Unstable/Woody) ..
If you've already installed Oracle 9i, then after replacing ld with the new one, run 'relink all', and then copy it back ..
(you may be able to get away with making a bin directory in oracle's home, and adding that to the beginning of your path with ld in it .. haven't tried it yet, but it may work without needing to temporarily replace the system ld)
I'm sorry to the person that originally suggested the unpatched ld .. I thank you for the suggestion :)

Linking was still failing for me on my
system. I have Red Hat 7.1 and I was
    trying to install Oracle9i Database.
The error I had while the system was trying
to build libclntsh.so.9 (built by genclntsh) was
    /lib/libc.so.6: undefined reference to `_dl_lazy@GLIBC_2.1.1'
    /lib/libc.so.6: undefined reference to `_dl_dst_substitute@GLIBC_2.1.1'
    /lib/libc.so.6: undefined reference to `_dl_out_of_memory@GLIBC_2.2'
    /lib/libc.so.6: undefined reference to `_dl_relocate_object@GLIBC_2.0'
    /lib/libc.so.6: undefined reference to `_dl_clktck@GLIBC_2.2'
As well as an undefined reference to
    __cmpdi2.
I just hacked my way out by adding the
libraries that seem to contain these symbols.
I just completed the installation and my
    setup seems to be working.
My linking problems was resolved by
changing the following line in genclntsh:
    SYSLIBS=`cat ${ORACLE_HOME}/lib/sysliblist`" -L/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-redhat-linux/2.96 -lgcc -ldl -lm -lc /lib/ld-linux.so.2"
    #SYSLIBS=`cat ${ORACLE_HOME}/lib/sysliblist`" -ldl -lm -lc"
(The commented out line was the original
line). Basically __cmpdi2 is defined in
libgcc.a and the other dl symbols are
    define in /lib/ld-linux.so.2.
    Hope this helps someone.
BTW, the change is done during the install,
when the system starts linking, an
error message is displayed. I made the
    fix, than manually ran
    sh -x /home/dba/OraHome1//bin/genclntsh
    in the /home/dba/OraHome1/plsql/lib directory
(where the offending makefile was failing).
When genclntsh succeeded, I simply clicked
on retry in the install popup and the Oracle
    installation proceeded with no additional
    hickups
    null
