Want to use FiOS TV via CableCARD - CSR insists I must lease at least one set-top box

Started looking into subscribing to Verizon using a CableCARD-based tuner, since I don't actually own a TV.
I did some research at verizon.com and ran across this page (important parts in bold):
CableCARDS
A CableCARD is a device that provides access to certain encrypted High Definition (HD) and Standard Definition (SD) digital programs without the need for a Set-Top Box.
CableCARD Features and Services
What digital programs can I watch with my CableCARD?
You can view all FiOS TV Standard Definition and High Definition digital channels to which you subscribe. You can also order certain Pay-Per-View events by calling 1-800-VERIZON (1-800-837-4966). Without a Set-Top Box, you do not have access to On Demand programming, the FiOS TV Interactive Media Guide, or other advanced features of the FiOS TV service.
So far, so good. I logged into my account, selected a package, and started the checkout process - and then encountered an odd question: "How many set-top boxes do you need?", where the options were a drop-down list starting with 1 and scaling up. There's an extra $12/month charge (plus taxes, of course) for just one box, and more for other boxes. No way to skip that step.
So apparently, according to Verizon's service rep... I need to pay $12/mo+tax for a set-top box that I don't need, and that will sit on a shelf while I watch Verizon TV through my fully-supported CableCARD adapter.

You don't need an STB or DVR, but here's the easiest thing to do - and I just did it, so I know it works.
Get the STB or DVR along with the Cable Cards. Get everything activated and working - including the cable cards - then return your STB or DVR, either to a FiOS store or via UPS. Voila, you're done and using only Cable Cards. I only have two Cable Cards on my account. Good luck.
INTERESTING.
I was considering doing this too. I originally had just a cablecard, then ordered a STB for another room. We don't use it so I wanted to return it. I can't!
Brb going to UPS store.

  • Recording a DVD with LG DVD Recorder and FIOS Standard Set Top Box

I have FIOS Standard Set Top Box, a Sony TV, and an LG DVD Recorder. I cannot figure out how to record a TV program on my LG DVD Recorder. I have 3 remotes: a FIOS Remote, an LG DVD Recorder Remote and a Sony TV Remote. What remote/s should I use, and in what order?  Thanks.

    1) Connect coax (cable) wire from the wall to the RF input on the back of the STB.
    2) Connect coax (cable) from the cable out (might say "to TV/VCR") on the back to the STB to the cable in on the back of the TV.
    3) Connect composite (red, yellow, white) wires from the back of the STB to the input of the DVD player.
    4) Connect composite (red, yellow, white) wires from the back of the DVD player to the back of the TV.
Let me know if any of those aren't possible based on your equipment. The SD STB (QIP 2500) has very few outputs so there are not a lot of options for a setup like this).
In order to record a program, you will have to do the following:
-Set the STB to whatever channel you want to record and keep it on. You will not be able to change the channel, because the DVD player will be recording whatever the STB outputs (the same feed the TV gets). With FiOS, it is not possible to have a DVD do the tuning for you, because it is an all-digital signal and most DVD players can only tune to analog chs 1-99.
-Set the DVD player channel to "input" or something of the like. This will get your DVD player to show the signal from the STB.
-Set your TV channel to composite input. This will show you whatever the DVD player is getting from the STB.
-If you want to watch normal TV without the DVD player, you can turn your TV to Ch. 3 or 4 and get the feed from the STB without having to turn on your DVD player.

  • FiOS TV cutting out to snow, resetting TV and set-top box?

    Greetings all, I'm hoping someone can help here;
I have a Motorola HD DVR 72161 (Verizon supplied) connected via HDMI to my Sharp Aquos LC-46D65U. Over the last few weeks, something odd is happening: after watching TV for a while, my picture will change to snow (no video input all of the sudden). I have to turn the TV and the set-top box (STB) off. When the STB goes off, it flashed the "du1" on the display. After about 10 or 15 seconds, the (turned off) TV makes a click sound. At this point I can power everything back on and it is working fine.
There is no pattern to this, though it sometimes happens more often (every 10 or 15 minutes) when watching a recorded program. It happens both day and night.
Tech support reinitialized my STB yesterday, and it didn't seem to fix the problem. I changed the HDMI port on the TV this afternoon (moved the cable to a new port) and this didn't help either.
Any ideas or help or suggestions would be very much appreciated! Thanks.

I have the same problem and have been through the same troubleshooting with FIOS support.  Unfortunately, I also have a Sharp Aquos (46D85U).  I was hoping this was a FIOS issue rather than an Aquos issue, but after reading your post, I'm not sure.  Perhaps it's a combination of FIOS and Aquos.  I did not have this problem when I had Cox cable.  It started as soon as I switched to FIOS.
Additional discoveries:  You can turn off just the TV, wait a few seconds for the relay to click, then turn the TV back on and the picture comes back.  Also, I just recently switched to the composite video output (Red, Blue, Green connectors) and the problem appears to have gone away.  The drawback is picture quality noticeably degrades.
Sorry, I don't have an answer.  Any ideas from the smart folks out there?

  • How to connect satellite set-top box to Qosmio G50 using RCA video-in cable

I want to connect my satellite set-top box to my Qosmio G50 laptop using the RCA video-in cable I received with the computer. (yellow, red, white RCAs and a Jack)
Could you help me where should I plug this cable as I have not found any instructions in the users manual. (The user's manual list this cable on page 21, so it can be used for something somehow for sure!)
(The set-top box does not have coaxial output, and I do not want to include another machine (eg. an old VCR) just to use coaxial connection.)
Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi, I want to have my phone "on ring" so my alarm will go off (have one set every night) but I DON'T want it to ring (just vibrate). It seems like there is no "none" option of Ringer. Anything I can do? So basically it seems my options are 1. silence the entire phone therefore also silencing my alarms OR 2. Leaving the ringer on low, putting all other notifications to vibrate, yet the ringer is STILL on. That's annoying!

The alarm will ring even if the switch is on Silent.

I have a number of questions: What is the best way for me to set up my computer for to allow him to do this.
Would he always have to use my PC once he is set up. Can he download from elsewhere?
Can I sync his IPOD into my I tunes account ( Is this even legal).
    Thanks for any advice.

    Nick,
You will need a Windows PC with iTunes running and a working copy of Windows Media Player available on the machine.  (iTunes calls WMP for the conversion from WMA).  Then just drag the WMA file(s) into the iTunes Music window.
iTunes will detect it and give you the dialog shown below, to which you choose "Convert."  iTunes will create a new version in the format/bitrate set in your Import preferences (MP3 in my example below), and immediately add it to your iTunes library.
The WMA original will be left in place, so you can delete it if you have no other need for it.

I installed a new dictionary. Something that worked fine when I installed it in the previous versions, works fine on my pc. But I have installed the dictionary 3 times now and it won't "take". I see it in the addon manager, but when I want to switch from us to dutch dictionary, it's just not there to be switched to. It's annoying and I need the dictionary

You can see which dictionary is selected if you right-click in a text area and open the Languages submenu.

I just bought a 12 core with Quatro 4000 and 5770, I want to use dual monitor setup, monitors are NEC with Spectraview-II.  How do I connect?  4000 only has 1 Display Port and 1 DVI.  5770 has 2 of each, if I use both 5770 Display Ports, does the 4000 contribute any work at all?  I read where on a PC they would work together, but on a MAC they do not.
I read that Display Port has higher band width than DVI, NEC monitors for best performance they recommend using DIsplay Port.
When I was setting this up I looked at a Nvidia Quadro 4000, unfortunately it was for PC, it had 2 Display Ports, in the Mac version they reduce it to one.  I did not think there could be a difference.
Mainly want to use it for CS6 and LR4.
    How to proceed???
I do not want to use the Quadro 4000 for both, that would not optimize both monitors, one DP and 1 DVI.  Using just the 5770 would work but I do not think the 4000 would be doing anything, and the 5770 has been replaced by the 5870.more bandwidth.
Any ideas, I am a Mac newbie, have not ever tried a Mac Pro, just bought off ebay and now I have these problems.
As a last resort I could sell both and get a 5870.  That would work, I'm sure of that, it's just that I wanted the better graphics card.
    Thanks,
    Bill

    The Hatter,
I am a novice at Mac so I read all I can.  From what I understand the NEC monitors I bought require Display Port for their maximum performance.  The GTX 680 only has DVI outputs.  Difference from what I understand is larger bandwidth with the DP.
You said I have the 4000 for CUDA.  I am not all that familiar with CUDA and when I do read about it I do not understand it.
A concern I have is, that if I connect the 2 high end NEC monitors via the 5770, using it's 2 Display Ports I would have nothing connected to the 4000.  Is the 4000 doing anything with nothing connected?  I read where in a PC system the 2 cards would interact but in a Mac system they do not.
Bottom line, as I see it, the 4000 will not be useful at all to me, since I want a dual monitor set-up.
So far the 5870 seems the best choice, higher band width than the 5770, and it has 2 Display Ports to optimize the NEC monitors.
I'm not sure how fine I am splitting hairs, nor do I know how important those hairs are.  I am just trying to set up a really fast reliable system that will mainly be used for CS6 and LR4.  Those NEC monitors are supposed to be top notch.

  • Using FiOS Mobile with a Bluetooth Keyboard

My husband, who is blind, just tried using the new FiOS Mobile iPad app with a Bluetooth keyboard, and for the most part, it works well enough. However, several small but annoying problems exist for which neither of us have found a solution.  They are:
    1. No keys on the Apple Bluetooth keyboard do anything except the arrows. But sometimes it is impossible to navigate away from some of the buttons on the top end of the virtual remote down to the lower ones, especially the numbers buttons and the DVR control buttons.
    2. Since no other keys on the keyboard perform any function that we can figure out, it makes it difficult to use the Bluetooth keyboard for entering channel numbers without reaching over to the iPad first, causing the app to focus on the bottom half of the virtual remote, then using the Bluetooth keyboard's arrows to find, then press, each digit. This must be done fairly quickly. Why not just fix it so that the keys on the Bluetooth keyboard's numbers row do this job, and other keys, or combinations thereof, move focus to other virtual remote buttons? What's the point of having the Bluetooth keyboard and not being able to control the app remotely? My husband uses the app to control the set-top box, right? Either we're doing something very wrong, or it's a little on the half-baked side.
    3. And last but not least, we've tried selecting shows stored on the DVR via the app with the Bluetooth keyboard, and once again, either we're doing something wrong (probably), or ... you fill in the blank.
The app does most things very well. A little more thought might have gone into labeling some of the buttons, and an explanation that some of them, like the Keyboard button, are toggles, but that's minor compared with the three aforementioned points. Hopefully these can be addressed, and FiOS, if you're really listening, my husband is ready, double-plus-willing and able to help you beta-test anything with which you can come up to make this app better.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Why can't I use a micro via

I think I'm being dense!  I have a two layer board, and want to use a "micro-via", but the PCB properties/Copper Layers tab doesn't seem to allow this.
Why?  I want a rectangular spiral inductor on the board, and need a very small via in the centre to get to the back of the board without clashing with the track.
The inductor track is 3 mil, spacing 2 mil, area in the centre to place a via is about 8 mils by 8 mils.
How small will board vendors normally go for via hole and pad sizes?

    Hi David,
Micro vias are used in conjunction with build-up layers and are generally blind or burried vias; they connect one or two (maximum) build-up layers to the copper top or bottom.  If you are unable to select this option in the PCB Properties, it is likely that you do not have any build-up layers on the top/bottom of board.  Here are some general steps to follow to place micro vias:
    1. Under Options > PCB Properties, check the Micro Vias box found under the Vias Support group (note: you must have build-up layers on the top or bottom of your board.  You can change the number of single layer build-ups on the left)
    2. In the Allowed Vias box, select the layers between which you would like to allow micro vias
(If you would like to allow micro vias between more than one layer (maximum of two), you can change the settings in the Pads/Vias tab under Maximum Layer Span.  Make sure to click Apply before you return to the PCB Properties tab)
    3. After you have finished selecting the allowable layers, click OK and return to your design
    4. Place a via (Place > Via)
    5. In the dialog that pops up, select the layers between which you would like the via placed.  If you select a combination of layers that was enabled in the PCB Properties, Ultiboard will automatically know that you would like to place a micro via and will configure the hole size and annular ring based on this.  Now if you double-click on the via that was just placed, the heading of the properties dialog should say Micro Via Properties, which will show you that it you have configured it properly.
If you need a via that goes all the way through the board, I do not believe this fits the actual definition of a micro via.   You should really contact your board manufacturer to find out how small they are willing to go, but based on the IPC-2222 Sectional Design Standards for Rigid Organic Printed Boards, the minimum drilled hole sizes for plated-through hole vias should be at least 0.2 mm, but obviously larger as the thicknesse of the board increases.  And then you also have to take into account the annular ring of the via.

  • Using FIOS for non-HD Digital TV

We just had Fios TV service installed.  We have a digital TV, a nice Sony, but it is not HD, so I ordered the standard definition Set-top box.  When the technician was here, I asked him if he thought we would get a better picture if I ordered the HD STB.  He said he did not think the HD box would work with my TV, so I dropped the subject.  But once I saw the Fios picture, I was somewhat disappointed.  It did not look as bright and sharp as over-the-air through my TV's digital tuner. Also, the picture was in fullscreen mode, never in the letterbox mode that you often see when watching Tv over-the-air.  (The technician hooked up the STB to my Tv with an RF antenna connection, which surprised me.  After he left, I switched it to the S-Video connection, to get the best picture we could.)
I read the user manual for the two set-top boxes, on the VZ wire site.  It looks to me as if the HD STB can be set to 480i resolution, which is standard definition.  My TV has component inputs for 480i, and the HD STB has component video outputs.  So that is why I thought I could use the HD STB even though the VZ literature says you must have an HD TV to use the HD service.
So (1) am I correct that the HD STB can work with my TV, at 480i?
and (2) if I did get the HD STB, would the picture in fact be noticeably better with the 480i output on the component connections than via the S-video cord I am now using?  Or not.
    Anyone else do this before?
    thanks!

The  answer is that it depends upon how you plan to connect the TV, and how good the video electronic in the TV are..
Your TV has 480i component input available. It certainly can provide a much better picture. I have my HD-DVR connected to an SD TV that has a 480i input. Can I see the difference between an SD and HD channel? No question about it. Why your tech didn't offer to hook it up that way is beyond me.
I will point out that the default component output on the HD boxes is 1080p, so you need to make sure you set the HD STB to 480i output. That should work from the front panel of the HD box, on the DVR boxes, it is actually available from the on-screen menu( and may also be from the HD STB, but since I only have an HD DVR, I don't know for sure), but you need to be able to display the on-screen menu, so don't disconnect you S-Video cable until you are sure the output has been set to 480i.
Here is how it breaks down:
With over the air (via tuner on ch3/4), you will get somewhere between 260 and 330 line resolution, depending upon how good (or bad) the comb filter , video source and tuner are. OF the available choices (4), this is the one with the worst picture.
Too many steps in generating the picture, converting it to NTSC, modulating the carrier, tuning the signal, coupled with channel bandwidth restrictions to limit the picture quality.
Composite video can provide up to 330 lines if the comb filter (and source) is good enough. Without the comb filter, about 260 lines. With high end TV's you tend to get comb filters that can get pretty close to 330 line. No modulation of demodulation of a carrier involved. Fewer steps better picture
S-Video input can provide up to 400 line resolution, depending upon the quality of the source, and how good the video electronics are in TV. (in S-Video mode the comb filter isn't involved, the Chromiance and Luminance signals are already split out at the S-Video source (in fact they may never have been combined in the first place). Fewer steps still...
    480i provides 480 line resolution.
Is it as a good as 720p or 1080i? No
However on an SD STB the best you can hope for is 400line via S-Video, and of course none of the HD only channels are available on the SD STB.
With an HD STB, you can expect to get 480 lines, which beats 260-400 everytime.

  • I need Help, I want to use my Vizio Tv as my moniter for my Macbook

    Hey everyone
I have bought a Apple DVI to mini-DVI Video Cable Adapter a while back, which I just recently used for my Macbook. I connected it to a Dynex DVI-to-HDMI Digital Video cable. I connected this to the HDMI 1 output on my 42'' Vizio VP42 HDTV.
BUT nothing comes up on the tv , just BLACK. Am I missing a step, or did I buy the wrong cord.
I would really appreciate it if someone could help me out and tell me EXACTLY what needs to be done, I don't want to mess up anything...
    THANKS in advance!

I have two Vizio sets that have VGA adapters and I am able to get my computers to output to them. I do not beleive that using HDMI out of the video out will be compatible with your TV. Although you may want to look in the settings for the input you are using on the TV while the cable is plugged in and see if you have the option to change the input to a computer.
Here is some info found from Vizio:
+When it comes to sending out a video signal, Cable boxes and DVD players follow a more defined set of rules. They can do one of several types of resolutions and thats it. Since this is the case the HDMI on our televisions is optimized for the NTSC format signal. So HDMI from a PC doesnt always work 100 percent since its intended design is to optimize signal from DVD players and set top boxes.+
+PC video signal has the ability to run with a larger spectrum of rules. First thing i would suggest is use an RGB cable instead of HDMI, the RGB input is designed with a wider range of resolution possibilities in mind. Before you even connect with the RGB cable set the resolution to 640x480 then work your way up through the resolutions. The second thing is that you make sure all of your display drivers are up to date.+
