Warped macbook pro

I had a hard case on my macbook pro, and when i removed it, it seemed to have warped the hinge and side areas. How can i fix this? and could i do it myself, or should i bring it in to an apple store? would i be charged for repair?

If you have AppleCare or your MBP is still under its warranty, call AC and/or take it to an Apple Store. Only Apple can let you know if it's covered or not.

  • Help!! bent or warped macbook pro unibody

my macbook pro dropped from my hand yesterday and now its warped and  opened on the right cornor side where harddisk is. My macbook pro is out of warrenty. What are my options?  and there doesnt seem to any hardware damages just cosmetic.

Out of warranty or not, Apple does not cover accidental damages.  Either take it in for repairs which will be your responsibility, report it to your credit card company as they pay for accidental damage, report it to your homeowners-renters insurance or just live with it especially if it's running ok.

  • Macbook Pro appears to be warped

Hi there, The support webpage is very hard to navagate, firstly.
Secondly the authorised support people in New Zealand, Rennassiance LTD's email doesnt work for me, mailer deamon just sends all my mail back to me.
I bought a new Macbook Pro 17" from Apple NZ (Which is actually just Apple AUS but they send it over to NZ....) I've only had it for just over a week, heres the problem:
One corner of the Macbook Pro sits a few mm above the desk, and the desk is level, I checked it, infact it does it on every desk. the lid doesnt close properly or sit flush with the rest of the laptop on one corner too, again a a space of like 3.5mm and it moves around.
It is super annoying and I dont know who to contact, I will be phoning the toll free support next week when they are open but any advice will be appreciated, thanks

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Warping is normal to some extent with Aluminum. The lid should NOT be flush, but rather floating over evenly on all three sides when closed. If it is an uneven float, that can be a problem.
Call this number if you are in New Zealand, and express your complaint to them about the e-mail address at minimum. This being a user to user forum your complaint will carry more weight there:
    00800-7666-7666
Be sure when you travel with it to shut down the machine until you come to a place you can be on stable ground. Be sure also to pack it in a foam protected case so that it doesn't get hurt by being bumped around.

  • MacBook Pro 13" Unibody "Warped" or "Twisted" + Other Issues

    Hello everyone,
Over the past year or so I've saved my pennies and I bought a 13" MacBook Pro Unibody last year (November/December ish, I'll need to check). Since then I've had numerous problems with it, software and hardware, that make me regret the purchase.
Most recently I've noticed that the case is not straight or level. When the computer is sitting on a desk I can "wobble" it between the top left and button right corners. I've noticed this not only at home but at the library and school as well, so it's not the surface. After a bit of searching I see that numerous other people have had this issue with all MacBook Pro models, not just the 13". Does Apple really have this bad of quality and quality control?
I'm contemplating bringing it back to the Apple Store, but (and here's the "other issues" part of it) I'm already a frequent visitor to the Genius Bar! I've been there numerous times to get the lid readjusted and tightened, and only couple weeks ago I was there again to get a broken key put back on! While Apple's support is top notch, I can't believe I paid over $1,000 for a computer who's quality is superseded by much cheaper computers from Dell and HP.
What should my next move be? If I bring it in to the Apple Store's Genius Bar again, what options will I have for repair? Will I be given a completely new model or a refurbished model? In the latter case, will I be able to return the computer for a complete refund so I can take my money elsewhere?

Bring it to the Apple store. You are under warranty. They will explain your options.

  • Warped, bend, crooked Macbook Pro 15" unibody

After a couple of days with my new Macbook PRo 15" Unibody, I noticed the machine is crooked and the plastic stands underneath doesn't all touch the table, or whatever surface it sits on, at the same time.
It's off by approx. 2 millimeters - not much, but enough to make it annoying. And paying that much for a machine I would expect the hardware to be straight at the least.
So anyone experienced something similar? Do you think Apple will replace it directly?
    Flemming

    Hi Brody,
this discussion is really for another thread But no my 13" had a flickering display (the backlight dimmed slightly but constantly).
The 15" that went bad on me suddenly froze in the Finder during nothing but a TimeMachine backup. A hard reboot could not get me into the system (only got to the grey screen with the spinning cycle indicator). I couldn't even start from a CD.
So i guess it was more than just the hard drive. But I had just recently read about a lot of issues with the 7200 RPM - 500 GB drives that Apple puts in from the factory.

  • Snowleopard broke my intern Superdrive on MacBook Pro (Original)

    Hello,
As by Thomas A Reed sugested (in my first thread, maybe someone can delete the one), i start a new thread, to keep it oversight and clear. Right now, i'm convinced, my case belongs to the 10.6 thread. The main threads about this problems seems to be in the Hardware MacBook Section:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1918925&start=405&tstart=0
But, because they are mixed up with other superdrive problems there. The problem itself seems to need more diversification as you'll see here.
    INVENTORY:
    • WHATS THE PROBLEM
    • CONFIGURATION
    • WHAT I'VE CHECKED
    • WHY AM I SURE THE PROBLEM IS CAUSED BY SNOWLEOPARD?
    • WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW (What to do, how to react)
    WHATS THE PROBLEM:
Last sunday (the 10/4/2009), i installed 10.6 (and right after that the imediately followed software actualisation to 10.6.1). It's the first new system i installed after 10.4.11. (i was and am still happy with 10.4.11, because it is stable). Apple does not say, SL would not work to use it on a system, where another system (like my 10.4.11) is installed. Instead, they say in their manual: "If you'll install it over (what i didn't) an 10.4.10 to 10.5.x, you'll have to read the Firmwareupdate Article" that i read. It was belonging ONLY to MacBook Air's !! and thats why this specific Firmware-Update did not wanted to proceed!!. last week i've found an Apple Store in my country, where i thought i may buy and try the SL. U never know, when u'll need it one day, so i wanted to become some experience with it. So I choosed the third partition, because it was free.
Right after the installation and the software-actualisation, my superdrive began to eject all DVD's and CD's (comercials, as own burned ones) right after inserting and clicking twice. In other words, it does not accept any optical media anymore. I never had any problem with this superdrive under 10.4. But after the SL-Installation, also 10.4.11 does "NOT ACCEPT" any CD's and DVD's anymore!
    CONFIGURATION:
It's a Mac Book Pro 17" Intel (Original), 2.16 Ghz Dual Core Duo, 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, 10.4.11 on the first partition & 10.6.1 on a third partition, Localisation: Swiss/German.
I did My intern SAMSUNG HD format as a GUID (as the OS X Installer said it has to be, if I would like to use OS X on a INTEL-Mac) and the partitions were HFS+ journaled.
    1. Partition (OS X.4.11): 49,68 GB / 11.11 GB FREE
    2. Partiton (Data): 149.68 GB / 7.69 GB FREE
    3. Partition (OS X.6.1): 32.97 GB / 27.46 GB FREE
The third partition was free. I used it as a spare place, for temporarly backups or cases, i need more space. Thats why i choosed it to try out 10.6.
In the System Profiler the drive is still availabe. So it's present. It says under: "Hardware/Medium brennen":
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-846:
    Firmware-Version: FQ3T
    Verbindungstyp: ATAPI
Brennen möglich: Ja (Laufwerk von Apple geliefert)

    and under ATA:

    Protokoll: ATAPI
    Einheiten-Nummer: 0
    Socket-Typ: Intern
    Low-Power-Polling: Ja
    Ausschalten: Ja
    WHAT I'VE CHECKED:
    • i repaired the rights both on 10.4.11 and 10.6.1
    • i started fsck (both, in 10.4.11 and 10.6.1)
    • i resetted the PR-RAM
    • i resetted the OF
    • i resetted the System-Management (5-button, as apple suggested)
    • i checked the RAM. Result: "BANK 0/DIMM0 1 GB DDR2 SDRAM 667 MHz OK
    BANK 1/DIMM1 1 GB DDR2 SDRAM 667 MHz OK"
    • i created new users (in both, 10.4.11 and 10.6.1), it still did not work.
    • i checked for a hanging Firmwareupdate in the Account/Startup on both systems. (there was nothing)
    • i tried an old CD-Cleaning set, but it did not help too.
    • i do wether use Bootcamp, nor VM-Ware (as some minors with that problem did)
    • i searched for other related Firmwareupdates, but they all only would work on a 10.5.x!
WHY AM I SURE THE PROBLEM IS CAUSED BY SNOWLEOPARD?
    • First you can say its a bad coincidence. But I've seen a lot of coincidences in between. More likely i would have won a Jackpot in Lotto, than that something like that would not happen exactly right after (seconds/minutes) a major Software Update that includes a hidden Firmware-Update or new Hardware-Limits-Specifications for a specific hardware! (as we had it in the past several times). Do U agree?
    • This drive worked allways well and was heavely used (reading, burning, watching DVD's, listening to Audio-CD's, everything). There was absolutely no other harm to this Drive and i handled it carefully and it's the same old as the MacBook Pro Intel itself (in other words: new enough, but old enough, that the guarantee ran out). Last I could install SL from the Retail-DVD from the new Apple Shop.
    • The drive is still listed in System Profiler, it tries to read, but does not seem to "know" the inserted discs anymore (makes twice a try to read)
    • There are hints (from Apple itself on their support-webpages), that 10.6 tried to update a superdrive firmware what caused some problems for others. In my case the FW-Update seems to have proceed successfully, but now the drive don't recognices any CD's and DVD's.
    • last but not least under Google you'll find a lot of articles related to that (or a similar problem) right now. Type in "Superdrive Snow Leopard Problem" and you'll see what I mean. And I've found out, that apple is investigating the SUPERDRIVE-Problem with the Snow Leopard at least since the 14.September 2009 now, after the 10.6 came out.
WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW (What to do, how to react):
    1. Waiting for a new FU-Update that corrects the error with the Superdrive?
    2. bring my MacBook Pro to a certified Repair place and demand for a new Superdrive for free?
    3. bring my MacBook Pro to the AppleStore where I bought 10.6 on sunday and demand a new Superdrive for free (but it's a long way to there)?
    4. send my MacBook Pro to Apple Ireland or somewhere in Europe is no option, i need it exactly heavily this week
    5. try to install an older Superdrive (from an old, damaged PowerBook G4) on my own?
Until then i "temporarly solved" the problem by buying an extern USB-DVD/CD burner. But I don't want to carry that thing everywhere with my Laptop.
    Cheers,
    Tazmandevil

I do repairs on a weekly basis, but I do not do warranty work for Apple. I do have an opinion about your drive failure.
As far as I can tell, all of your logic is self-serving and wrong. If a drive quits working after you install Snow Leopard, and won't work with Tiger or Leopard, the drive has failed. Snow Leopard does not change the firmware on the drive, or motherboards. The fact that the drive shows up under Profiler does not mean that the laser optics in the drive itself are still aligned properly or that the motor is spinning the disk at the right speeds. You can try to use a cleaning disk. I've had some luck on occasion.
Booting from a known good disk will prove the issue. Booting happens before an OS has time to run software drivers, and the drive is under control of the motherboard's firmware.
    4 Options:
1 - Warranty Replacement - you will need to ship or deliver the laptop for repairs.
    2 - Pay for Replacement
3 - Replace the drive yourself, with the proper drive.
4 - Use a cheap external drive until you can take the machine off-line long enough to get the repairs done.
I've seen these drives fail by accidental abuse (machine was dropped and bent the aluminum frame around the slot and warped the drive), over-use (a client decided to make hundreds of copies of disks for friends at a school - too much heat), dirt build-up (cleaning disk can work here), and other unknown failures (some drives quit working and a replacement fixes the problem). Replacement drives are available for around $150 US, and there are YouTube videos that demonstrate how to change the drive.
I had a MBP have an optical drive fail after upgrading from Tiger to Leopard. I used an external drive for a year or so. Fortunately, I purchased the 3 year warranty, and after I got a new iMac I was able to take the Laptop in for repairs by a certified Apple repair station (less than a week turnaround). The new drive boots a Tiger DVD, Leopard DVD, and of course, Snow Leopard.
Hardware like this, that quits working with earlier versions of an OS that the machine is designed to run, are never fixed by a System Update because it's a physical problem with the drive.

  • Macbook Pro Melted Its Own Casing - Expert eyes needed on this photo please of my macbook pro

    This is a 2008 15" Macbook Pro.
At the genius bar I pointed out that the computer was so hot I could barely hold it, so hot the computer had warped it's own plastic casing where it connects to the power source.
So the genius guy took it in the back, opened it up, diagnosed a fried logic board and said "For $310 we'll fix up anything in the computer, you'll get it back good as new."  In 2010 the logic board also fried and was replaced, and the heat cooling system was then replaced - looks like the same issue all over again.
So I took it home to get the data off the hard drive, but when I brought it back a few days ago, the new 'genius' made a different diagnosis.
Without barely looking at it, without taking it in the back, and without listening to or believing anything I told him, the Genius Bar are calling this impact damage - overriding the previous genius's assessment.
How can the perfectly symmetrical ripple wave in the plastic which goes top to bottom through a half inch of plastic be created by impact damage? And that the plastic piece below is not warped would mean I would have had to have removed the bottom piece of the computer, dropped it, then put it back on, in order for it to not be warped like its top half.
Are there any expert eyes out there who have an opinion on this keeping in mind the symptoms?
Additionally when the computer was its hottest, the trackpad would not click. The plastic must have expanded from the heat. So it would click, but only if I pressed really really hard. Doing this one day the plastic on the trackpad actually shattered from clicking it. But the shattering must have removed the surface pressure from the expanded plastic and therefore the trackpad became fully functional again in its shattered state and that's how I've been using it for quite some time.
I really appreciate any expert support from the community here if you disagree with the 2nd geniuses because I am complaining through official channels. I do not want to pay extra for damage the computer did to itself. Especially when this is the 2nd time the logic board fried on this computer.
I am someone who has owned apple's first everything since the 80's, and have worked on two Apple commercials myself. I'm currently typing this post from a PC... Does Apple want to satisfy its customers anymore or what?
I never did get a feeback solicitation emailed about this appointment either, I wonder why.
    <Edited by Host>

Each time I look at this post - the moderator has edited it again into something different than I said. Moderator, I'd prefer to remove this entirely if you are going to change the meaning of it. How do we do this? The above posts at 9:25a and 9:57a are not my language at all. And the moderator looks to have removed my ability to edit my post.
An update to the discussion (which I will repost separately when the moderator removes these ones which s/he's altered) - apparently this happened to other people as well - enough to bring a class action suit on apple forcing them to repair the issue:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2536493
    http://gigaom.com/apple/is-apple-blind-to-nvidia-related-macbook-pro-failures/
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2675881?start=60&tstart=0
The Beverly Center apple store handled this 1000% better than the 3rd Street Promenade Store did - just got back the Macbook Pro, entirely repaired for $310, just like the 1st genius as 3rd Street Promenade told me would/should happen, overruling the 2nd set of geniuses Adrian, Phillipe and Matt.
I tried the 866 customer support # at apple to tell them about my unpleasant experience with 3rd Street Apple, and was routed around in circles being on hold for 12 minutes at a time - got nowhere. They told me I could give feedback at apple.com/feeback - but this site offers nowhere to plug in unpleasant experiences with the genius bar - only allow one to complain about equipment. So despite all the phone calls I've made, my experience has gone unheard by apple.
Though I've twice paid $300 to have the fried logic board replaced on this computer, I am asking apple to reverse the charges due to the class action and known issue with the NVIDIA graphics card on these models.
Not only did they replace the casing (which was melted), they replaced the battery which was leaking and had expanded, replaced the fried logic board, and the fried CD player. Additonally, when using this computer before, I periodically felt little shocks to my wrists where my skin contacted the edge of the casing. And the computer was so hot I couldn't hold it. If these aren't heat/power issues, I don't know what are.

  • Macbook Pro Screen Quality

I upgraded my notebook from an ibook G4 to a Macbook Pro last August. I have been an apple user for more than 5 years now and love my macbook but recently I noticed a small, superbright pixel on the bottem left side of my screen. I just noticed this because I have had a solid black background and recently changed to a grey background which made it a lot more noticeable. I took it into the Genius Bar and the rep tried to tell me that I had done it myself. He said that it looks like a pressure mark. I told him in response that I never take my computer off my desk because I mainly use it for video editing and I have never seen anything like this before. It does not look like a pressure mark or a frozen or dead pixel but it looks like a white glowing eyelash. What do you guys think it is? I also have full apple care and I am surprised that his response was that it is physical damage. I have never dropped my computer or take it anywhere. It simpely sits on my desk like a desktop.

I have a similar problem on my new MBP 15" as well. I bought the notebook about three months ago and used the default wallpaper for a while. About three weeks ago, I changed my wallpaper to a lighter color and noticed a small, bright mark about halfway up a half inch from the right edge of the screen. I have taken this notebook out a couple times but baby it (I mean, it is a two THOUSAND dollar machine). I took it in once, before I noticed the mark for rattling due to a slightly loose hinge and warping edges. The genius told me to get a thick cloth to sit in between the screen and keyboard when the machine is closed. So, I'm sort of afraid to take it in for this (small) problem and get a similar answer - there's nothing we can do, or it's a pressure mark.
I have ramped up my Photoshop use lately and the mark is directly over the layers window, which is really annoying.
I think I will take it in tomorrow. If I get a different answer, I'll post back here. Sorry to hear you have a similar problem. It's annoying - especially after you first notice it.

  • Dvd stuck in macbook pro

I cannot get a DVD to eject from my Macbook Pro.  When I eject through the standard ways, the DVD mechanism obviously is trying to eject, but the disk will not come out of the slot.  It then remounts the DVD and it starts to play.

I've tried that and all the other possible ways described in previous posts.  The computer TRIES to eject the DVD, but it will not come through the slot.  Instead, it remounts and starts to play again.  I suspect the DVD may have been slightly warped.

  • MacBook Pro, or not?

Hello everyone. My cousin has recently considered switching to Mac, with a new Mac laptop. We took a look at the MBP, and then considered waiting for the new Intel iBook. Now... I (she) have a few questions. First of all, is the heat a huge issue? Is it worth not getting a MBP because of how hot they get? Also, where are the fans located on the MBP? Now, obviously, the MacBook (Intel iBook) will be much cheaper, so, how are the finance plans for Macs in general? She plans to pay the minimum monthly fee. And, one last thing... She's not a heavy duty computer user, but she uses Photoshop a relative amount of time. Is it worth getting the MBP (instead of the MacBook) simply because it's built for Pro applications? So, that's about it. Thanks in advance.

My Macbook pro has lots of problems,
heating, whine, slight gaps, slightly warped lid, distorted sound from speakers...
the thing that bothers me the most is the whine and the heating,
but a guy called Cryptonome is working on a proper implementation of speed step that would increase battery life, cancel the whine and cool it down, (release due tomorrow - http://increw.org/ ) so... I dont want to worry about it anymore.
Lots of people made multiple replacements to rectify the problem, but for many of them, instead of getting the problem fixed, the machines got much worse (whine still present, dents and deadpixels etc) and the Apple store here claimed all the problems are "normal" hence "unreplacible" so ... i am not replacing either...
i think i've learnt to live with it, but I do hope Apple address the issues in near future....
conclusion: be mentally prepared to face the problems, but other than that it's a great machine and i still love it. get it if you want. if you are afraid of the problems then don't.

  • Maxed out MacBook pro or Mid level MacBook pro with Retina?

I am entering my first year in university in the next couple weeks. I am going to be studying commerce for the next 4 years. I want a macbook that will last me for the 4 years and still be a good product at that time period. Now I am wondering if I should spend $2000  on the maxed out MacBook pro or 2600 for the midlevel MacBookmacbook pro with Retina display. Looking forward to great feedback. Thanks

It depends on how far you want to go - and how much you want to spend - in maxing out the computer. Let me visit the Apple Store -
The 'base model' you should go with is the:
    15-inch: 2.6 GHz
    2.6GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
    Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
    8GB 1600MHz memory
    750GB 5400-rpm hard drive
    Intel HD Graphics 4000
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory
    Built-in battery (7 hours)
This will be a 'stock' item and has the maximum amount of RAM that Apple will install and is $2,199. The only modifcation to make on this model is the CPU and hard drive, as it also comes with the maxed out VRAM for the NVIDIA graphics card. I wouldn't go for the extra speed bump on the CPU - it's just not worth it. What is worth the extra money is an uprade to the hard drive - from the 750GB 5400-rpm to the 750GB 7200-rpm for an extra $50. If you really want to max it out, of course, you could add the $900 option of the 512GB SSD, but I wouldn't do that - simply too much to pay. So for $2,249 you could get:
    15-inch: 2.6 GHz
    2.6GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
    Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
    8GB 1600MHz memory
    750GB 7200-rpm hard drive
    Intel HD Graphics 4000
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory
    Built-in battery (7 hours)
...and have a very fast (not warp speed, but fast) computer that should you ever decide to upgrade, you can.
As for the Retina display, it's simply something that I would not invest in at this time. The 'base' model, with only 8GB of RAM is $2,799.00. Increase that RAM to 16GB, and you're looking at $2,999. The extra $750 just isn't worth it. And with few applications taking advantage of the Retina display (if they ever do) you're going to be looking at pixelated tools, text, etc., for who knows how many years. You could get by running only Apple applications, I suppose, but I'm just not ready to be placed in that kind of restrictive mode... are you?
    Just my 2¢, again...

  • MacBook Pro Closure Gap

I've read other topics about issues with a warped display and gaps in the display. Well, I just wanted to check whether or not my new MacBook Pro is normal.
I purchased the 17" model and when the lid is closed, there isn't a large gap, however, at the left and right end, it could be closed further, so if I put a little pressure on it, it dips in a bit. It's hard to explain. Photos are included below...
    http://flickr.com/photos/inknoise/sets/72157594240314112/

    Hi Carlos,
I've seen many powerbook 15", 17", macbook pro 15" and 17" like yours and mostly Apple will not do anything to repair that because there is nothing wrong with the unit. It's cosmetic issue (which is actually poor assembly in my persoal opinion).
So far if our cust complained about problem like yours and if they complained to Apple we usually change the display panel assembly but there is no guarantee that the replacement display will not have that kind of problem again.
I still have no idea until now what cause that gap different between right and left, could be poor assembly in the display hinge when they tighten right and left hinge screws is diferent strength.
    Good luck

  • TS1248 trackpad stuck down on intel macbook pro

Any advice on help for my trackpad which is stuck down, 5 year old computer and has had no misuse

Try removing the battery. You have to make sure that your have your computer plugged into the mains, and that it doesn't become disconnected whilst you are using it without the battery installed.
Place the laptop back onto a flat surface (without the battery installed, but still plugged into the mains), and see if the fault has been rectified.
What happens, is that, over time, the heat generated by the MacBook Pro warps and distorts the battery casing. The battery is housed over the trackpad circuitry, so that as the battery casing warps, it presses up against the circuitry and causes all sorts of mayhem.
If you discover that this is the cause of your problem, the only remedy is to replace the battery.

  • 10.5.6 update almost blew up my MacBook Pro battery!

OK, I'm not 100% sure of that, but the timing is awfully suspect. Last night I downloaded and ran the 10.5.6 update and installed on my two-year-old 17" MacBook Pro (2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo, previously running 10.5.5), and all seemed well. Then just now, roughly 24 hours later, I noticed the laptop wasn't lying flush on my desk, as if something were underneath. Odd... when I looked below, I found the battery was swollen to almost twice its thickness! I immediately shut down, waited a few minutes, then rebooted successfully with no battery installed.
The laptop felt unusually hot to the touch right before shut down, but now feels pretty much normal. Currently temps are:
    HD: 110º
    CPU A: 142º
    GPU: 128º
    GPU Heatsink: 131º
    Heatsink A: 115º
    Heatsink B: 113º
    Mem Controller: 126º
Has anyone else seen battery or heat management issues as a result of this update?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

The same thing just barely happened to me 1/2 hour ago. Luckily I have a friend's laptop with me as well and have a spare battery at home (at work). After reading this I'm a little skeptical as to whether or not I should risk the spare battery. Could this really be an issue with the update? I thought perhaps it was just that my battery is over 2 years old and just at the end of its life. If this is a system issue from the update. I'm not quite sure when this happened, but I suspect it was this morning because I hadn't noticed the battery before. I had it sleeping closed in my bag on my way to work and when I took it out the fans were all running high (still closed/"sleeping"), the screen was on even though it was supposed to be sleeping (still closed) and the whole computer was really really hot to the touch. I immediately flipped it over, and saw the battery was all warped. I opened the computer and got a system error message telling me to hold down the power button. Did that and then took out the battery. Anyone know if this could really be an issue with the update or just an old battery at the end of its life? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  • Macbook Pro fans stuck at 6000 RPM

    Hello,
I am using a 2006 MacBook Pro, 2GB RAM, 2 GHz Intel Core Duo with a 500GB HDD that has 450 GB free.
About a month ago the left and right fan started cranking up to 6000 RPM (which is apparently max for this model) upon startup. Most discussions I've read while looking for a solution suggest resetting the SMC, which I have tried a few times to no avail. CPU and RAM usage are normal, nothing taking up tons of processing power on activity monitor and temps are around 35-40 degrees Celsius. I saw a few boards talk about a stuck print job which I checked for as well, but there was nothing. I tried downloading and using the smcFan Control app and setting the preferred fan speed to as low as possible but the app still registers speed at 6000 RPM and they have not slowed down.
Unfortunately, I bought this MBP from a used dealer (had it for a few months before this started), so I do not have the original OS disks to perform a hardware diagnostic. It came with 10.5 on it but I have since upgraded to 10.6.8
I'm not experiencing any problems with operation but the fans at this speed are extremely loud and annoying; is there anything further I can do to try to fix this? I'm a bit new to macs, is there a program that gives you more powerful fan control than the one I downloaded? How much would something like this cost to get fixed by Apple? Thank you in advance for any advice.

You likely have blocked vents inside or a hardware issue, like a failed sensors to trigger the fans at default max warp speed.
If your adapt at opening it up, you might want to take a look at these videos and get yourself a can of air spray + tube and blast out the obstructions out from the inside.
