Washed out backgrounds?

Took some pictures this weekend outside and the backgrounds are washed out.  How do I edit that in Photoshop CS5 or Lightroom 3?  I am still trying to learn these two programs.  Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Okay.  I am at work right now, but when I get home tonight I will try to post one.
Thanks!

  • Washed out background image on Treo Pro

    Hi:
When I set my background image on my today screen (check the box in settings, browse to image - use 320x320 resolution) I get a "washed out" version of the image regardless of its original color, tone or intensity. Images from the preinstalled themes are fine - vibrant and clear - but the user set images are very light (almost like a 50 percent transparency in Photoshop for example). I have tried both .jpg format and .png. Backlight settings do not cure this either.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Hi Again:
Upon further investigation, I have discovered that the options for setting background and transparency levels is found through the pictures and videos explorer not the file explorer.
As suggested I have set the transparency to 0 and the image (Crab Nebula through the Hubble space telescope) is as bright and vibrant as it should be.
Thanks again for the direction - it's much appreciated.

  • ICal 5.0 - washed out dates unreadable

The text in Lion iCal 5.0, mainly 'Month' and 'Year' views is so washed-out grey that I can't read it. As a partially sighted Mac user I usually find a little Zoom is all that is necessary, but this text is just too weak-washedout-gray for that to help.
How do I make the date text black - or at least bold? I know I could use Universal Access to set things system wide, but it is just the ugly new-and-improved iCal that is causing me difficulties.
Getting rid of the dirty brown top to the window would also improve the look of the app.

Our office is experiencing the same symptoms. ICAL is useless  on our imac I5s due to background lines delineating days and weeks along with the labels being virtually unreadable. User input for events and to-dos are redable but useless since they simply appear on a white background. We have attempted to calibrate our displays without success. Universal access is equally without benefit. Becasue of the importance of calendaring, we are considering moving all of it to MS Office for MAC Outlook. Apple needs to either change the screen templates to black and white or provide contrast control within ical itself and/or allow the user to change the background color so that the template will be readable.
I should note that the same problem occurs on our older IMacs as well as our MacBook Pros, but not to the same degree. On these machines the ical grey lines and labels are barely readable, but still not useful.
Does anyone have any other thoughts about curing the problem. I would prefer to use ICAL but without resolution of the problem I will move to Outlook.

  • IMac 24" with washed out colours - Help!

My iMac 24" Aluminium (June 2008) running 10.5.8 has behaved impeccably for almost two years. I use it for graphics and photographic work, so colour fidelity is very important.
A few days ago, in the morning, the machine was still "perfect". By lunchtime I realised something was not right. The Photoshop file I had been working on looked different. I could not see details in highlights, transparency in layers that was clearly there in the morning had suddenly vanished. Looking closer at the whole screen I realised the whole environment was washed out - not just in Photoshop files.
    I tried:
Calibrating the monitor - no difference.
ColorSync Utility: Verify/repair - reported loads of errors but fixed nothing.
Took the mac to authorised Apple repair shop in Hove (UK). Spent time with the engineers trying to sort it out. They had not experienced this before.
We connected 2nd monitor. Strangest thing: The same moment the 2nd monitor was connected, the native screen instantly looked fine. Both monitors fine.
Disconnecting 2nd monitor, and the native screen went bad again.
Booted up the iMac with their external drive and system (sorry, not sure which system but probably the same 10.5.8). The screen looked fine, even without a 2nd monitor. Rebooting with native OS and the screen went bad again.
Conclusion: Corrupt file in the system somewhere. Advice: Reinstall system (archive/install).
I did this today. Screen is the same bad screen, so reinstalling 10.5.2 and upgrading to 10.5.8 did NOT solve the problem. Erase and install is my VERY LAST resort. I really don't want to start from scratch with new system, new installation of applications, updates, settings etc.
I would rather buy a small 2nd monitor, watch the screen look good again, having another screen to use and PRETEND I DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM!
I also ran an extended hardware test (from OSX 10.5.2 install DVD) without reporting any problems.
    Questions:
Has anyone any idea what this can be?
Is it possible that upgrading to Snow Leopard can solve the problem (but that is also just an upgrade and not a clean start?)
One way of describing it is that a finder window has no contrast in highlights (blue and white horizontal stripes are only visible when another window's drop shadow multiplies with the background. Everything is too bright, banding appears in visible highlights.
Someone suggested moving the file /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist to trash, without deleting yet. Then reboot.
    It didn't work.
    Thanks for any help!

My problem was purely about screen contrast, not the colours. It was in fact me accidentally keying the shortcut (key command was unknown to me then) for contrast settings that are found in System Preferences -> Universal Access > Seeing, Display: Enhance Contrast. The key command is also shown there.
I now realize that I did this key command when working in Quark XPress which has a very similar command: "Shift-Option-Command" and then "," or "." I accidentally keyed "Control-Option-Command" and then "." Worth being aware of if you're working with Quark.
Glad your problem was solved by calibrating your monitor.

  • PDFs washed out when exported from Indesign

I have a grayscale picture on a B&W background. Looks great in Indesign, but when exported to PDF the blacks are washed out. I have tried it several times.
I am using Indesign CS, exporting to Acrobat 5, print, on compression I have chosen 'do not downsample' on all.
When exporting simply to screen, it looks fine and the blacks are rich. When exported with the press settings, the black becomes a dark gray.
    Help? thx

There are a few things to consider about the way ID handles grayscale images.
ID does not have a grayscale color spacethere's only CMYK, RGB, or Lab. The display of Black (which is CMYK 0|0|0|100 because there is no grayscale space), varies depending on the document's CMYK profile. Modern profiles never display 0|0|0|100 as absolute black because that's not what happens on pressoffset blacks are not very black. Absolute black is reserved for rich black combinations, i.e. 65|50|50|100. If you change profiles from a coated to an uncoated profile you will see that uncoated profile previews Black as an even lighter value, which again is what will happen on a press printing on an uncoated sheet.
Things get more complicated when you place a grayscale image. ID displays it differently depending on whether you have Overprint/Separation previews turned on or off. With Separation preview on, the grayscale previews as if it's on the black plate of CMYK (dark gray). With Separation preview off the grayscale previews at 2.2 gamma and the 100% black is not limited.
When you export a press quality PDF with a grayscale and black objects you get a CMYK PDF with everything on the black plate, so Acrobat's display of the CMYK file is again dependent on the CMYK profile in Acrobat (black is gray)
Legacy CMYK profiles display 0|0|0|100 as absolute black, so try setting your Color Settings in both ID and Acrobat to Photoshop 5 Default Spaces, which will give you an absolute black preview in both programs.

  • Photos when published have the colours washed out

I'm using iWeb 09. This didn't happen with 06 but whatever I do to process photographs before sticking into iWeb 09, when the site is published all the colours are washed out.
I use Photoshop CS to get photographs suitable for websites using "Save for Web". I thought this might be the problem so I redid all my photographs using iPhoto > Sharing > email but the same thing happens.
When still building the site in iWeb the colours look great but not after publishing. What's the deal? I can't see any preference or tool to tweak.

    Hello Roddy,
Thanks for you help in solving this one. The drag and drop still works over the top of the manual background picture. As I mentioned before it's a bit of a trick to get all the thumbnails to act properly when re-arranging all the fields but at least now I know so starting from scratch will avoid trying to re-arrange fields and make my life a lot easier.
One item that still bugs me .... I insert a shape (with no colour or image fill) to act as a border and sometimes .... why only sometimes I've no idea .... not matter what I do moving things forward and back, it refuses to go back behind some thumbnails .... the only way I've found to overcome these errant borders is to delete them and copy one from another page and paste it! Strange stuff.
    Anyway cheers and thanks again

  • How come start up screen colors look washed out.

    Hi,
I tried to change the background for the login startup screen on my iMac.  I noticed that the colors from my image appears faded.
When I look at the image in other origram(ie. preview) the colors are what they should be.
So what is OS X(Lion) doing to cause the colrs to look this  way?  And is there a way to fix it?
Thanks and I look forward to your reply.
    ...Bruce

I had this problem with my R705 too.  It has to do with one of the bloatware that is already installed from the factory.  The reason that I say this is because after I put in a ssd and did a clean install without any of the bloatware, I don't get the washed out screen effect anymore.  Now which one of the bloatware is responsible for this, i couldn't tell you.

  • Titles look washed out

I have ended a video with simple credits: white Gill Sans lettering on a black background. These titles show on the computer as crisply and vividly as I had intended. When I create a DVD and play it on the computer, they are still crisp white-on-black. When I play the DVD through a TV (any TV of almost any size: CRT, LCD, Plasma or LED), the whole of the video shows perfectly, but then come the end credits and the white Gill Sans had turned into a dull, washed-out gray. This makes it difficult to read.
This is frustrating, but what makes it doubly annoying is that similar white-on-black title scrolls and cards from broadcasters show clearly and crisply on these same TVs.
Obviously, broadcasters are doing something that I am not (or vice versa). Can anyone suggest where the problem might lie and what the solution is to these ditchwater whites?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello Tom:
    1. The format is AIC 29.97 1920x1080i60.
    2. I'm exporting as a QuickTime ref file.
    3. The resulting file looks perfect: 100% white on 100% black.
    4. I'm exporting to Compressor 3.5.2, which I set to burn the DVD after encoding has finished.
Given the symptoms (only on a TV does the white text go dull), normally I would have assumed that the fault lay in the TV, but this look of 30% white on 100% black happens irrespective of which DVD player I use and which TV it's connected to. I have now tried half a dozen player/TV combos thanks to friends and family. Only on a computer monitor is white text on a black background truly 100% white.
Strangely enough, whites in the video images are perfectly white. This problem becomes apparent only in white text on a black background.

  • Psd file wash out when add transparency to page

    HI,
I've had a noticeable yet unknown problem, and today I figured out why, but now need help fixing it.
    Working with CS2
When I import a grayscale psd file into ID, it gets washed out when I add a transparent element to the page. My page started out in the page Window as a solid white background, and changed to transparent when I added the transparent element next to it. At the same time, my nicely contrasted grayscale psd image (contains levels adjustment layer) became washed out and lighter. This is the first time I've actually watched it happen as I added a transparent element - probably because often transparent elements are added before my photos.(this explains the poor image quality I've had in the past - always thought it was a calibration issue on my monitor).
So my question is, how do I get the page (icon in the pages window) to be solid white again? or at least not weaken my grayscale images?
I had a printout before I added the transparent box, the image printed nicely. Now the image prints washed out just as on the screen. (printing using "Send All Data" for image output.
I'm working in Doc CMYK, transparency flattener is set to Doc CMYK, turned on overprint preview, tried isolating the blending, knocking it out, re-placing the psd file, adding a solid white box behind it (a no-no, I know, but was for testing purposes) all to no avail.
I'm sure there must be a setting somewhere, but I'm not finding it.
I'm grateful for any help I can get!

How are you printing? Are there any CMYK elements on the page?
Most desktop printers are really RGB devices. You may find you get better results if you change the transparency blend space to RGB.

  • Are all Week 39s washed out?

I have a week 39 from Costco that has very washed out blacks when compared to my iPhone. Is this normal on the Touch? Does anyone have a Touch where the black background on the home screen looks truly black even with the brightness all the way up. My iPhone does, my touch doesn't. I think Costco may be getting back the Touch and I may have to live with only 4GB on my iPhone for now.

    NO DONT RETURN IT
all of the ipod touches have fairly poor blacks do to its construction
let me reiterate what i wrote on another persons thread ALSO wondering if the light blacks is a common problem
"haha if uve read my posts, this is perfectly normal
theres nothing u can do on it. The screens on the ipod touch and the iphone are solded differently (ive taken notice on those sites that take ipods apart), so it creates a completely different viewing experience. The ipod touch's screen is completely washed out with backlight while the iphone evenly spreads out its backlight. I have concluded that i should just live with that fact, and i think you should too. "

  • Used phone outside for five minutes in thirty degree fog! screen seems slightly washed out!

I know this phone is rated as ip 65 and 68 but I used this outside talking for five minutes in the cold fog. Note the screen seems slightly washed out and blurry, like light/dark gray text on white background like this site is especially harder to read now!
Is my phone permanently messed up? Should I let it dry overnight? Or am I just being a hypochondriac when it comes to this? Thank you all very much!

  • CFPDF - Thumbnail washes out the color of the pdf

We are using the CFPDF line to convert incoming pdfs to thumbnails to be displayed on our site.  The problem is, the PDF has a darker green as a background, and all the different versions of the thumbnail have a washed-out green (not the same green).
Here is the line I am using:
    <cfpdf action="thumbnail" source="#ExpandPath('/')##inFilePath##inFileName#" pages="1" format="jpg" destination="#ExpandPath('/')##previewFilePath#" imageprefix="#prefix#" overwrite="yes" scale="100" hires="yes" maxlength="200" maxbreadth="200" resolution="high" />
Unfortunately, this site is not open to the world yet.  I will atach 2 files to this post.  One created with photoshop, and one created with CFPDF

    Hi ,
    I have understood the problem.
In your ABAP code replace all the occurrrences of wa_data  with the structurename.
Use the TABLES keyword to declare the structure .That structure will be same as

    Here the structure is SPFLI.
