Waveforms on audio tracks - sometimes there are, sometimes not...

Can anyone tell me why Soundtrack Pro displays the audio waveforms on some track but not others? Or sometimes on none at all?
I can't find anything that turns the display on and off, and it seems quite arbitrary. Also, when Soundtrack chooses not to display them, they don't turn up in the file editor either and I can't fix pops and clicks. Any thoughts?

Maybe this is a trivial answer, but it's a thought:
It will take some time for STP to render the waveforms, especially if the masterclips referred to are very long. I have a project with a 40 minute clip and STP and it took STP about 2-3 minutes to render the waveforms the first time i opened it, provided I didn't do anything else at the same time. And it renders kind of arbitrary, just as you say.

Capturing only 1 audio track when there are 2 audio tracks

Has this happened to anybody ?
I had to fiddle with the capture settings in Final Cut to accommodate for progressive HDV video. When I changed it back to my normal interlaced HDV video, I had trouble with the sound tracks. (I have tried changing all the settings in the HDV 50i possibilities. I'm in europe)
I only get one sound track in stead of two (but I can hear both sound tracks when I capture).
If I get 2 sound tracks, They aren't imported into the project. If I try to import them without restarting, final cut doesn't recognize them.
But recently, no matter what I do (changing settings) I only get 1 audio track.
Ideas ?

I would like to add to this thread. I have this same issue, it's extraordinarily frustrating, and I'm not finding any useful information online. This is a serious bug and hopefully it can be addressed.

I'm trying to capture HDV 1080i footage shot on a Sony V1U, using a Sony HDV deck that I've used hundreds of times without running into this issue. The footage has two audio tracks -- of this I am absolutely 100% certain -- yet when batch importing clips, Final Cut captures only 1 track. This happens whether or not I have it set to capture a stereo pair or two mono tracks.
Again, there is no issue with the tape or the audio. It's there. I can sit and watch the preview meters in the FCP clip settings tab as I play it, and both channels register and display levels independently. Final Cut is capturing only one of them. For the life of me I can't figure out why.
I have trashed preferences. Restarted. Rebooted. Tried multiple Easy Setups. I still get only one track of audio when batch capturing. Amazingly, if I Capture Now from the exact same tape, I get two channels of audio. I have a project with hundreds of clips already logged - I need to batch capture them.
If anyone has insight into this bug, please help. Thanks!

I posted this almost a month ago, I'm surpirsed noone else had had this issue...
I don't sync that often (yeah, I know, crusify me), but tonight I went to synchronise again and I got a different photo that wont come over....
In addition to the above:
- the photos are taken with the same camera, on the same date and time as other photos around it...
So "why is it now no longer compatible with iphone4?"????
If I unsync a photo, it just gives me a new photo it can't sync.
Can anyone tell me how to find ALL the photos it can't sync? This is a serious deficiency of iphoto/itunes/sync with iphone...

[Pre Ele 9] Audio tracks in project are frozen. Unable to move, edit, or even select.

This is my first project using Premiere. Great program, when you know what you're doing. Right now, I'm on a modest laptop, Vista 32-bit, 2 gigs of RAM, Dual CPU @ 2.00 ghz. My project consists of .wma files, some .mp3's, .wav's, and some .jpgs. It's a small project, only ten minutes, about 20 clips, some 20 cuts.
I don't know exactly what happened. I was trying to move all my audio files I had to close this gap I made. But I think I clicked group, or link or something by mistake, and now, two of my audio tracks are literally unresponsive. They play perfectly for the preview, but I can't move them. I can't even select them. Right clicking the sound track does nothing. Even weirder is that my Audio 1 track is normal. It's just my narration and soundtrack tracks that are causing problems. I've researched online, and I heard about them being "locked" or "disabled", or something with Keyframes. But I don't think that's it. Or maybe I need more of a noob's guide. I turned on track size and saw the waveform for my audio. It's there, but it's dimmer than my Audio 1 waveform. Also, I tried Render and Replace, but that didn't work. Lastly, whenever I try adding a new audio file in any of the two audio tracks, the program basically ignores it and places it in Audio 1 or even creates a new audio track.
I know I did something so simple, I know I just need to uncheck this tiny little option. Maybe some of you are even chuckling. But please, help me. End this torment.

I agree with Neale on this one. The Narration and Soundtrack are "fixed" Audio Tracks, and have at least one property, that other Audio Tracks do not have - they cannot be Deleted. Usually, they work just fine, as their names indicate, but then sometimes, they just refuse to work properly. Why? I have never seen a common element, when they just sort of freeze up, or refuse to mix-down their Clips.
Because this behavior has struck several, most of us just recommend NOT using either, and instead, just using an empty regular Audio Track. I cannot recall an instance, when that proceeure did not work. This behavior has been around since about PrE4.0, by my readings, but may have happened to even earlier versions. There is just something in the structure of those two Audio Tracks, that gets "out of alignment," either with certain operations, or perhaps certain Assets.
On the note of "certain Assets," do you happen to have any MP3's on either of those Tracks? They can cause no end to problems, and not just on those two fixed Audio Tracks. If you do have MP3's, take a look at this ARTICLE.

Audio track souce controls are missing

The source controls for both audio tracks have suddenly disappeared my time line. It doesn't matter if I open old projects or create new ones, they're not there. I can't find anything about toggling them on or off. The destination track targeting controls are still there.
Is this a feature that can be removed (but why would anyone want to do that) or do you think perhaps there's a glitch in the software (and if so, what to do about it) ?
And, of course, this has happened 4 days before my deadline.
Any tips or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

There may be nothing in the Viewer that relates to them.
Open a clip from The Timeline with known audio, what happens?
Try trashing the FCE preferences if you can't get them back.

USB Audio Device sometimes not detected. udev, maybe?

I am using an external usb audio device which I usually keep plugged into my machine. I am finding that this device is sometimes not being detected when I boot the computer.
When this happens, issuing the following command:
$ aplay -L
does not list this particular device. Plugging and unplugging the device does not seem to help.
What does seem to resolve the problem is unloading and then reloading the snd_sub_audio kernel module. This is done by issuing the following commands:
# rmmod snd_usb_audio
# modprobe snd_usb_audio
Could anyone give some insight as to why the usb audio device isn't being detected and why this only happen occasionally? Could this be a udev issue? The device in question is an M-Audio Fast Track Pro.

Audio appears on two seperate Audio Tracks but they are not routed together

Sorry for this, I have done a search of the forum but couldn't find what I am looking for answer wise so I need some help.
1. I load up an Apple loop onto track one
2. I then create a new audio track
3. I then load a new Apple loop
When I load the second Apple loop, the first one not only plays through audio track 1's output but also audio track 2's output.
If I solo the second loop I can still here the first.
Any ideas?

Aside from what Sam said, it's also possible that you have soloed loop 2 while playing loop 1 in the Loops browser. The solo in the Arrange track will not silence what might be playing in the Loops browser.

Audio Tracks can be Heard but not Seen

I am using Logic Studio 9 and in Logic Pro all the sudden I have had a problem with my audio tracks. When I record the tracks I can see the track audio waves being cut but once I hit stop the track visual go to a straight line with no feature. If I back up the play head and press play I can hear the audio of the track, but not see it. I can even bounce the track and use it in iTunes or WaveBurner, but still I cannot see the track visual info. This just recently started. ANY ANSWERS to this mystery would be greatly appreciated.

Sometimes audio works, sometimes not on apple tv

I'm using my iPad2 and AirPlay through My new ATV2 to watch movies and TV shows purchased through iTunes. My ATV2 is connected via HDMI to a Denon receiver, which in turn is connected to my HDTV via HDMI. I have two speakers set up from my receiver; (the TV speakers are muted).
Most of the time it all works flawlessly. But with some iTunes purchases, the audio disappears, or at least the dialogue. For example, I purchased a sample pack of The Office, 5 episodes. On all but one, there is no audio, other than opening and closing credits music, and the odd sound effect. Same for an episode of Law and Order I purchased. Ditto for the rental movie Dreamgirls.
My guess is that on some of the newer videos, I'm missing the extra audio channel. Or could it be something else?
All help appreciated, from a confused non-techie....

Try turning settings > audio & video > Dolby digital on/off.
You might also try changing the audio out setting.

Is there a waveform monitor for the audio track in premier elements 13?

trying to fine tune audio,getting hits on the supplied sound tracks.

Thanks for the last two replies with details that turned around my approach to your question. It was not until your post 3 when you mentioned Music Scores did I realize that you were referring to Music Scores developed in the concept of being able to adjust their duration without altering music arrangement. You were not referring to non-Music Score music.
In the case of Premiere Elements Music Scores, I see no way to visualize their waveform in the Premiere Elements audio tracks. Double clicking a Timeline Music Score brings up the Score Properties dialog and not the Preview Window to inspect the waveform.
When "non Music Score" music is imported into Premiere Elements, it goes through a conforming process which automatically generates the cfa (audio) file and pek (waveform in audio track) file. And, these files are characterized by a waveform visible on the audio track with the appropriate audio display format. For each audio conformed, there are two files generated by the program, cfa (audio) and pek (related to waveform seen in the audio track).
When you drag a Music Score to the Premiere Elements 13 soundtrack, first you see "Generating" and "Conforming" and then Score Property dialog .When all is said and done, the Music Score is in the audio track with no waveform. If you go looking in the Media Cache Folder to determine if a cfa and pek set exist there after use of one Music Score (Drama in this example), you should find that the Drama conforming process generated 71, not 2 files, representing cfa and pek sets.
With regard to hard drive space...1 non Music Score file's conformed audio files might be expected to take up about 68.2 MB while one Music Score file's conformed audio files might
be expected to take up 263 MB.
Please take a look at what you have in the way of conformed audio in the Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit path

At this time I do not know the explanation for the absence of waveform in the Music Score representation on the Timeline audio track. Need to do more homework on that.

No audio - audio tracks whited but wave forms there

I do not have the audio tracks disabled they are just white. I can see the wave forms but I get no sound when I play the sequence. How do I fix that? Rich

Hi Richard.
Have you Muted the tracks? If there is no Mute and Headphone symbol to the left of the audio tracks click the tiny Loudspeaker icon at the very bottom left of the timeline window. Tiny Loudspeaker and headphone icons should appear. These icons are in addition to the normal green loudspeakers.
If the LS icon is yellow it is Muted so click it to deselect.

TS1424 downloaded an album but there are parts of tracks missing

Ive just bought a couple of albums on itunes and it said they were downloaded... when I play some of the tracks back there are chunks of the tunes missing can I re-download from itunes if I delete the files??

If your country's iTunes Store allows you to redownload purchased tracks, I'd delete your current copies of the tracks and try redownloading fresh copies. For instructions, see the following document:

Otherwise, I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the items that are not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the items, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" links next to the items.

Audio track problems.

A new user of Premiere Elements 8. I imported a 50 minute, home-made video from a DVD (originally shot on analog tape) into the program. The trouble is that the audio track sometimes plays, most often does not. The visible waveform sometimes appears, sometimes not. Then again, sometimes the sound will play with the waveform visible, but often it does not. I can't depend on the audio track to play, and so I cannot edit the thing without it being present. The computer has 4 GB of memory, Quad-core 2.7 GB processor, NVidia GeForce 9400 GT Video Card - 512MB DDR2.
What would cause the audio track to intermittently drop out and reappear, along with the visual of the waveform?

What I ultimately ended up doing was to take the clip in question (this time in .AVI format, converted from the original .VOB) and convert it into an .MV4 clip. I imported this into the existing .PREL file and the audio worked fine, along with displaying the waveform. I don't know why the original .VOB clip didn't work, even after conversion to .AVI, but there was something about it that the program didn't like.
Thanks for your continued advice and suggestions, and also for your comments about converting analog VHS files into digital AVIs. I'm looking into getting one of those Canopus ADVC 300 units that you speak highly of. If I convert a VHS into an .AVI file through this device and burn it to DVD using Premier Elements 8, will the disk have the same video/audio quality that I get from digitizing a VHS tape through my Panasonic DVR E-85H and editing it on the hard disk in this unit, then burning it to DVD?

Missing the second part of audio tracks.

While importing clips sometime only comes the first part of the audio track - the seecond part is not available. What is wrong?

What do you mean by "the second part"?
Are you saying that only part of your audio clip is present and that part of it is blank?
What format is the audio -- or is it a video clip? If video, what model of camcorder is the video coming from and what format and resolution is it?
Which version of the program are you using on what operating system?
