Ways to restart when Finder freezes

My finder freezes during several occasions. Opening windows, using thoth 1.72, and some other applications. The only way I know to restart is pressing the on/off switch. Is there another way to (keyboard keys) restart. I still have mouse movement.
eMac   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

OK, go to your upper-left Apple menu and choose Sytem Preferences. Now go to Accounts. There is a little + button at the bottom of the window. This will create a new user account. This new account will act like a fresh install with default preferences and settings. If the Mac works great under this new user account, then the problem is most likely a bad preference file. Do not do anything to this account. Always keep it as a test when things go awry.
To delete your Finder preferences, go to your Home folder and open the Library folder. Find the preferences folder, open it, and locate the com.apple.finder.plist file as well as Finder.plist and throw them into the trash. Now restart your Mac. This should fix the problem.

  • How do I get an iMac to automatically restart when screen freezes and computer has to be restarted at plug

Occasionally the screen on the Imac will freeze and the compute has to be restarted at the plug, but when the plug is switched back on the computer only switches back on fully with the screen coming on if you switch a button around the back of the computer, but I remember when using an iMac G4 it would come on automatically when th computer was switched on at the plug. Is there any setting or any software that will automatically restart the computer when the computer is off and I restart it at the plug?

You cannot, what you need to do is find out why your computer is freezing. Perhaps you can shed some light by posting an EtreCheck report and we can see how your system is configured and look for any obvious red flags. You can get EtreCheck by clicking http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

  • Using Aurora on Ubuntu, there is no way to "restart" when multiple profiles.

    Currently using Aurora [Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:33.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/33.0 ID:20140804085133 CSet: Undefined] on Ubuntu 14.04
Whenever I install a new Addon and need to restart, Aurora simply closes ang gets 'hangged' on memory without restarting.
This happens since I have two different profiles [currently one with a full-charge of addons, and one that uses no addons].

    Hi HenryGR,
    Thank you for your question.
Please make sure in both profiles that the extensions are up to date: [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]]
Also let's start here for general hanging, even though it may have to do with a process happening there: [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-hangs-or-not-responding#w_firefox-hangs-when-you-quit-it]

  • What's the "right way"  to quit the Finder?

I just had to re-install another CM plug-in that Snow Leopard deleted for me, and I need to restart the Finder before I can use it.
I notice there's no longer a menu item to quit the finder in the Finder's Dock pop-up menu, so now the only way to restart the Finder is to use Force Quit Applications, which says I'll lose all my changes--meaning I'll have to re-open all my windows.
The alternative, of course, would be to quit all my applications and log out or reboot.
This *****. I mean, here we are at 10.6, and they still haven't figured this out? Finder is just an app. Why can't you save your changes and restart it? I can understand that they wouldn't want to make it too easy to unintentionally quit the Finder, but why can't they make it possible?

I played around with an app called "MacPilot" last night. It lets you enable "hidden" preferences in the Finder and a bunch of other apps and some system preferences.
While it does enable the Quit menu item in the Finder, this menu item does just what it says: it quits the Finder. It doesn't restart it. That could be useful under some circumstances, but it could also be risky. As long as the Finder icon is in the Dock, you can launch it from there, but one of the other MacPilot options is to have the Dock show only running apps, so you can create some interesting problems for yourself with this app if you don't think through all the consequences of the options you choose.
Another thing that's a little risky is that, when you enable the Quit menu item, it comes with the Command-Q shortcut enabled by default. This, I feel, makes it a little too easy to quit the Finder inadvertently. I've made the mistake of quitting the wrong application when the window I'm looking at doesn't belong to the frontmost app, but since it's the biggest window on the screen, and the frontmost app might not even have a window open, I end up quitting the wrong app. I think it's also pretty common to hit Command-Q instead of Command-W, since they're right next to each other on US QWERTY keyboards.
On the plus side, there is an option to have the Finder remember its window settings. I selected that, so I'll see if it actually works if I quit or relaunch the Finder using any of these other methods.

  • Finder freezes when accessing an external drive

I have been using WD 3TB green drives in docks for storage for years. For the last 6 months occasionally I will access one of the drives and the finder freezes up, I will then need to restart the computer. When I try to mount my drive I get a "The disk inserted was not readable by this computer". I do not want to loose the data so I will not initialize the drive. Disk Utility will not even recognize the drive nor will Disk Warrior. In order to save the data I need to use a recovery software. I use Ontrack EasyRecovery Home, it works great but is taxing on the computer and takes a lot of time. So does anybody know why this is happening? Is it a problem with my computer or the manufacturing of the drives?
Probably a coincidence, but this has only happened to the WD green drives since they changed the packaging from green to yellow.

Interesting.  What avout your login items in your Accounts preferences?

Remove maudio, specifically that com.maudio.usb.fasttrackpro.driver.  If you just move that out of /System/Library/Extensions (or if there is an installer) you need to reboot after adding/deleting kext's.
If no software was installed by you then somehow that external got that com.seagate.SeagateStorageGauge.plist installed in your /Library/LaunchAgents.  If the maudio removal doesn't change anything then this segat launchagent is the next to go.

  • Finder Freezes when I try to get file info

    G5, OSX 3.9
Occasionally finder will freeze and become unresponsive when I try to check a file's info. I control+click on the file and the drop down menu appears normally, but when I click "Get Info" the Finder freezes; I get the spinning colour wheel of death and Finder won't respond. Forcing Finder to re-launch works fine and I haven't had to restart the computer yet, but I want to nip this problem in the bud right now before it gets any worse.
    Can anyone help?

Buy DISK WARRIOR Software is only one is best to fix your HD problem! You can download in Site: www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/
It is same as mine, but worser than yours... My internal HD is failure, Do not restart often it can create heaviest corrpt in Files! Back up Important included Mail, Preferences, Applications you downloaded, etc to External HD or to CD-RW. If you have External HD, Do it, before too late.
No Disk Utility or FCSK(FSCK?) can you trust, because they cannot tell if its HD is bad...
Remember if Finder is freezing, it is in HD with sereve corrpt in this file which cannot fix. Do not restart it, Back up all... I did try like you do, but nothing work out without Disk Warrior. Make sure Back up all before it stop working. If it is, then buy new HD.
I tried do Clean Install (Archive and Install), but still the same problem as even getting worser... Its "Bootstrap Errors" Bad errors I found out its in HD during installing while opening Error log (in Installer menu?). Let me give you link I learned:

  • Finder freeze when opening folders of my Western Digital external hard disks

I'm facing a big issue. I'm runnin' Mac Os Lion, I realized a clean install a few days ago. Everything is going fine, but every time I plug an external hard disk on my MBP, I can see the disk appearing on my desktop or in the finder, and when I open it, the finder freezes, I have to reboot manually, or wait to relaunch the finder. My disks are in HFS format, used to work great on Snow Leopard no longer than a week ago... What is weird is that my time machine (external hard disk usb) works fine... Moreover, I can see the disks in the Disk Utility, I can't click on "verify permissions" but on "verify disk" and it says that the disks are fine... Any idea ?
PS : I could have erase everything on them and reformat, but I need the files inside...
    Thanks

    Hi!
    Here's a suggestion from BDAqua:
In finder, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes".
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra number on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a number, and reboot.

  • 10.9.2 Finder Freezes when resizing and changing directories

I just updated to 10.9.2 to find that when the Finder is open, and I resize the Finder, for instance to stack two windows side by side ... the Finder freezes when I simply drag the corner of the window around.
Similar thing happens when I click on a different folder.
Seems pretty odd given that I have a recent system with an SSD, and I didn't have the problem before.

  • Finder freezes when trying to move files to external hard drive

Whenever I try to move files from internal hard drive to my external finder freezes it. I have over 5 TBs of free space on my external, so I know it's not a space issue. This happens no matter the size of the file. It starts the copy and then will freeze before it finishes. If I try to force quit and select relaunch it acts like it is relaunching but my icons never re-appear and the command bar at the top never returns. So I end up having to hard boot.
I just reinstalled the 10.5.8 combo update and verified both hard disks, if any repairs came up I repaired and then did the same with disk permissions....it's still freezing on me. I am frustrated because there are some files I'd really like to move to my external raid hard drive but I'm not able to.
The freezing happens if I'm trying to transfer files from a disc or an additional external HD. My internal HD is only so big and the external Raid drive is for my capture scratch on Final Cut Pro and I'm even having issues capturing to that drive. Everything wants to be on my internal HD and that doesn't work for me.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Sean Dale1 wrote:
Do you get any error messages and if so what are they? Do you have any problems copying files off the problem drive back to your Mac or do the freezes only occur when copying to the external?
No I don't get any error messages, the finder just freezes and when I try to relaunch finder it doesn't relaunch properly..all icons are missing and I'm not able to access the the task bar to properly shut down so I have to hard boot.
It happens only when trying to save files to the external, whether through drag and drop or within programs. I am able to access files on the external and copy files from there to my internal without problems.
Have you tried attaching this drive to another Mac and if so do you get the same issues?
I don't have another Mac to attach the drive to.
How is this RAID attached, SCSI, FireWire, SATA or what? How was the RAID created, Disk Utility or third party software and have you verified the integrity of the RAID?
The RAID is attached via SCSI. In an attempt to solve this finder issue I re-installed the drivers to the most current drivers available and in doing so updated any firmware....and there was no change. I was not the one who set up the RAID so I don't know how it was created. It's an Enhance UltraStore R16 and I've been using it without issues since January 2007 and this freezing thing has been intermittent for a few months now but now it's constant and annoying. I've verified the disk through disk utility but I don't have any software to check the integrity otherwise. Do you have any recommendations as to what software I could use to do this?

    Hi there,

Whenever I turn off my computer, the desktop loads but no icons load and finder freezes (beach ball). I've read some stories but none seem to fit mine. I ran Console, and here is my report:

I'm thinking I need to delete a plist somewhere, but I'm not sure which one and don't want to take a big risk.
    Cany you help?

"Avast" is perhaps the worst of the whole wretched lot of commercial "security" products for the Mac. It's worse than the imaginary "viruses" you were worried about when you installed it. Not only does it fail to protect you, it destabilizes and slows down your computer, and it sometimes or always corrupts the network settings and the permissions of files in your home folder. Removing it may not repair all the damage, and neither will Disk Utility or even reinstalling OS X.
Back up all data, then remove "Avast" according to the developer's instructions:
    avast! Support Center
    Reboot.
If you tried to remove Avast by dragging an application to the Trash, you'll have to reinstall it and follow the instructions linked above.
If you still have problems after following those instructions, post again.

  • Finder freezes when searching

I've been having a problem lately where whenever I search for an item- using either spotlight or the finder or addressbook, that the finder freezes up and I get the beachball immediately. I'll type in a word I'm searching for, but it basically freezes after the first letter and I think it begins searching for every file on my hard drive that has that letter. Eventually, the second letter in my search term comes up and it freezes again. Eventually the whole search term makes it in, and it's no longer freezing up. When I had this about a month ago, I repaired permissions and zapped the p-ram and it seemed to clear up, but now it's back. Any ideas on what's going on or how to fix it? Thanks,
    Andy

Hi, Andy. Welcome to the Discussions.
    1. What changes did you make to your Mac before this problem arose?
    2. There have been cases reported where SystemUIServer hangs during a Spotlight search. SystemUIServer controls menu extras, the icons on the right-side of the Apple menu bar other than the Spotlight icon. When the problem occurs, the SystemUIServer process appears in red text and indicates "Hung" in Activity Monitor.
This has happened both with Apple-provided menu extras and third-party menu extras. It seems to occur most often after opening a menu extra without making a selection from its menu, then proceeding to perform a Spotlight search. A bug has been filed on this.
The Finder (Find function) and Address Book search facilities are implemented in Spotlight.
    3. Try troubleshooting third-party menu extras by process of elimination. In some cases, third-party menu extras are launched as Login Items, in which case you might also find my "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ helpful.
    Good luck!

My ipod is stuck on do not disconnect, and it won't respond when plugged in to imac or wall.  Is there a way to restart it without using the computer?

You can reset your iPod with these instructions:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320

  • Finder freezes when attempting to access a "shared" external hard drive (wireless via Airport Extreme)

Finder freezes.   As soon as I click onto my "shared" external hard drive (3TB WD - wireless via Airport Extreme), finder immediately freezes / eternally spinning beach ball (until I restart finder).  Can still access wirelessly on another Mac (not on Yosemite).
    Please help!

Ok - for a while there, the hard drive would not come up on the desktop - but now on a re-boot of the compter, or if I disconnect the hard drive and re-connect it, a message comes up with three buttons which say:
    Initialize
    Ignore
    Eject
Sound like the hard drive has died?

  • MacBook Air freeze and need to be restarted when downloading with a web browser only!

    Here is my configuration:
    - Macbook air 2012, mountain lion.
Here are the symptoms that affect the computer:
    - The computer freezes when I try to download a file through a web browser (tested with chrome and safari). I can download  through the Appstore for instance.
So I have to turn it off by long pressing the off button.
Then when I restart  it reboot without worries or it restarts again by freezing and by 3 beeps when the desktop appears.
    - What I tried to do:
Checking permissions and disk and no problems detected.
Reinstall osx partition from the partition recovery hd, but I got an error when preparing the installation.
I wanted to mention that this problem started to appear when I downgraded parallels desktop 8 to 7 and running my boot camp with parallels 7 but with higher configurations!
    and it crashed several times.
I also read that the number of beeps had a precise meaning.
    Thank you

Your website mentions about drivers for certain peripherals, I have a 54MBPS Wireless ADSL2+ Modem Router which was supplied by my ISP, do I need a driver for this to solve this problem?
