WD external 1TB not working anymore @ Macbook Air

hi there.
After hours trying to figure it out, I just realized that I have too an OLD WD 1TB that has the sata brdge together with the drive itself... problem is, my Macbook is not recognizing the WD passport anymore. It is my time machine backup drive, so I am kind of upset...
There is a way, any way to put this drive again working, in another drive case or whatever?
I already updated the drives, I have 2 others external drvies, one from iomega and another one from WD, olders, and both are working.
i bought this one january/2013 in LA. How old are they?!?! gosh...
I have a MacBook Air 13", MACOSX 10.8.
here is a photo from the drive, after I had opened the case.
Thanks for any help or hint.
Cheers form Brazil,
AM

Yup, that is WHY you never buy WD external HD, they cheap out and save 50 cents by making the controller board and SATA bridge card the same unit
Toshiba is now doing the same thing, avoid them as well
Purchase Seagate and Hitachi to avoid that (Hitachi are the best ext. USB drives without doubt)
see here all about it:
Your dead external hard drive is likely fine! Great hope for your 'faulty' external HD
There is a way, any way to put this drive again working, in another drive case or whatever?
ONLY if you had another identical HD you could swap the controller boards.
. It is my time machine backup drive, so I am kind of upset...
You never should have let yourself be in the position of having a single external DATA copy, ever
hard drives are way way too cheap to let that happen.

That doesnt mean anything
Hard Drive Warning (all makes and models)
Ironically but logical, new hard drives are far more fragile than one that has been working for several months or a couple years. So beware in your thinking that a new hard drive translates into “extremely reliable”!
Hard drives suffer from high rates of what has been termed "infant mortality". Essentially this means new drives have their highest likelihood of failing in the first few months of usage. This is because of very minor manufacturing defects or HD platter balancing, or head and armature geometry being less than perfect; and this is not immediately obvious and can quickly manifest itself once the drive is put to work.
Hard drives that survive the first few months of use without failing are likely to remain healthy for a number of years.
Generally HD are highly prone to death or corruption for a few months, then work fine for a few years, then spike in mortality starting at 3-4 years and certainly should be considered end-of-life at 5-7+ years even if still working well. Drives written to once and stored away have the highest risk of data corruption due to not being read/written to on a regular basis. Rotate older working HD into low-risk use.
The implication of this is that you should not trust a new hard drive completely (really never completely!) until it has been working perfectly for several months.
Given the second law of thermodynamics, any and all current mfg. HD will, under perfect storage conditions tend themselves to depolarization and a point will be reached, even if the HD mechanism is perfect, that the ferromagnetic read/write surface of the platter inside the HD will entropy to the point of no viable return for data extraction. HD life varies, but barring mechanical failure, 3-8 years typically.
Hard drive failure and handling
The air cushion of air between the platter surface and the head is microscopic, as small as 3 nanometers, meaning bumps, jarring while in operation can cause head crash, scraping off magnetic particles causing internal havoc to the write surface and throwing particles thru the hard drive.
Hard drives are fragile in general, regardless, ... in specific while running hard drives are extremely fragile.
PDF: Bare hard drive handling generic instructions
hard drive moving parts
Some of the common reasons for hard drives to fail:
Infant mortality (due to mfg. defect / build tolerances)
Bad parking   (head impact)
Sudden impact   (hard drive jarred during operation, heads can bounce)
Electrical surge   (fries the controller board, possibly also causing heads to write the wrong data)
Bearing / Motor failure   (spindle bearings or motors wear during any and all use, eventually leading to HD failure)
Board failure   (controller board failure on bottom of HD)
Bad Sectors   (magnetic areas of the platter may become faulty)
General hard drive failure

Now when I got my new MacBook Pro, I down loaded all new Skype (worked tested), FaceTime (Worked Tested), Yahoo (not worked)

  • Toshiba external HDD not recognized by MacBook Air

I have a 1TB Toshiba USB3.0 external hard drive that I have been using for the last year or so to back up all my work data.
The drive works perfectly when I connect it to a PC (Dell desktop, laptop, HP laptop, etc.).  I even was using it last night on a PC.
However, my work recently replaced my PC with a MacBook Air, and the system will not recognize the drive.  USB port will power the drive (light comes on solid blue), but System Profile, Disk Utilities, and Finder do not recognize as attached.  Once again, I used last night without issue on a windows PC.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Camera is not working on MacBook Air 6,2 with Bootcamp and Windows 7 Pro 64-bit -- how to fix?

I have a MacBook Air 6,2 that has been Bootcamp'd with Windows 7 x64 Pro. Everything works find except for the camera, which does not appear to work at all. In the Windows Device Manager it shows the camera as installed with a working driver, but the camera never turns on.
Any ideas on how to make it work?

    Hi,
If there is no error after the disk checking, please temporary disable antivirus, update BIOS and device drivers such as hard drive from computer manufacturer’s
    website to check the result.
If the issue persists, I suggest you boot in Safe Mode, and clear the temp folder. Delete every files that can be deleted.

  • External Monitor Not Working With Macbook Pro

My computer was working fine with an external monitor, then my computer froze, and I had to hold down the power button. When I turned it back on, my computer would not work with an external monitor. I've tried different cables, so it's not the cable. The monitor is being detected by the computer, but nothing is showen on the external monitor. When connecting the monitor to the computer, the computer's screen goes blue, then turns back to normal. I cannot reset the SMC by removing the battery, I do not have the confidence to remove my battery, and do not have the time to send the computer to someone else to do it.
I also tried updating my OS from 10.7.4 (Might've been 10.7.3) to 10.7.5.
My computer is a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010), running OS X 10.7.5 Lion.
I need to get this problem fixed ASAP, any help is appreciated.
    Kind Regards,

I forgot to mention, I'm connecting the monitor via MiniDisplay -> HDMI. I've also tried USB -> HDMI and USB -> DVI -> HDMI but none of them seem to work.

  • HP Laserjet Pro 1102w Wireless (Not working on MacBook Air 10.10)

HP Laserjet Pro 1102w Wireless is not working on my MacBook Air Yosemite (v10.10).
I tried setting it up via this link: (v10.10 Yosemite, Method 3: Wireless Setup Using a USB Connection)

All I get under printers is the USB kind and NOT the Wireless/Bonjour kind.
    Can anyone help me out?
    Thanks.

    Hi @Random_Pelican ,
I see that you are having issues setting up the printer on 10.10. I would like to help you out today.
If the printer has a valid IPv4 address and you still can't add the printer as a Bonjour printer, most likely Multicasting is turned off on the router, since your not able to add the printer as a bonjour device and the other devices won't recognize the printer. Just call the router company and have them turn it on.
If the printer doesn't have a valid IPv4 address please try these steps:
Reset the printer first to clear out any previous network settings.
Turn the printer off, hold down the wireless button and cancel (x button) while turning the printer back on and don't release the two buttons until the printer stops making noise.
Print out a configuration report and make sure the SSID and IP address are cleared.
    Printing a Configuration Page.
Make sure Safari is set as the default browser. Sometime the Embedded Web Server won't open if it isn't.
Open Safari, across the top select the Safari menu, select Preferences, General, set as default.
I will provide the steps for 10.9, which should work the same for 10.10.
Mac OS X: How Do I Find Which Mac OS X Version Is on My Computer?
Here is a Youtube video of the Laserjet P1102w wireless installation on Maverick.
    Laserjet P1102w.
You may follow the steps instead of watching the video.
You have to connect the USB cable from the printer to the computer to install the printer as a USB device first and then configure the wireless network.
Turn the printer on, connect the USB cable and install the Apple Update that should automatically load.
Then go to the Apple, System Preferences, Printers and Scanners.
Highlight the Laserjet on the left side of the window.
Then click on Open Print Queue, click on Settings, click on Utility, click on Open Printer Utility, then click on the HTML Config button.
The Embedded Web Server for the printer will open.
Click on the Networking tab, select Wireless on the left side.
Fill out this information for your network. Status make sure you select Enabled.
    Apply the settings.
Then go back to Apple, System Preferences, Printers and Scanners and click the + sign to add the Laserjet bonjour printer. (might take a couple of minutes to appear) Make sure the printer listed beside use: shows the proper printer name and not the default driver, then click on the add button.
Delete the USB printer from the list from the Printers and Scanners window.
    Disconnect the USB cable.
    Test the printer.
Let me know how you make out.
    Have a great day!

  • External isight not working with Macbook Pro early 2008

My external isight is not working with my Macbook Pro early 2008 (2.4 GHz, Intel Core 2 Duo, 6 GB RAM, OSX Lion). It goes warm when plugged into the firewire port but is not recognized in system prefs (lists as "unknown device" and also does not turn on (green light. I tried resetting PRAM and all the other stuff as suggested here but no luck. It used to work fine on a 1st generation Macbook and I remember that one of the first times I tried it with this machine here it turned on for a few secs (green light) but then it just simply stopped.
Unfortunately, I have no other firewire device to check the port.
    Any ideas, dear community?

Our (old) external Firewire iSights can be sensitive to dust, shock, vibration, humidity, and other environmental factors in storage.  (I store my spare in its original plastic shipping case with a new desiccant pack on a solid shelf - never in a desk drawer or other container that moves.)
You have tried several good things and may be finding that your old iSight needs work.
Here are the alternatives I can offer.  Consider any you have not tried in any order you like:
    (1) You can try Apple's suggestions from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
Test in more than one user account and with more than one Apple softwre application.
    (2) My expanded suggestions here: http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage4.html
    (3) Reset Firewire ports using the info from this old archived Apple article: http://web.archive.org/web/20090331211534/http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1317
    (4) If you have no local Apple Authorized service Provider who can help you, other service options are here: http://www.apple.com/support/isight/service/
    (5) Consider a new USB cam with current warranty such as one of these: http://www.mac-compatible-web-cam.com/

  • HT4628 The Wifi does not work when Macbook Air is started by Win8. How to let the Wifi work in Win8 ?

    Hi all,
WIFI of Macbook Air works when the notebook started with OS X.
But when I restart the Macbook Air with Win8, the Wifi does not work.
The Macbook Air was bought last month. It is new model. The wifi may be a/c.
    Thanks,

hey zyzzyxx, you're not the only one with this issue. it happens to me too. as soon as i unplug my cintiq via thunderbolt display my connection shoots straight back to having 20mbps down. i checked it using a speedtest.
ever find a fix for it?

  • Camera not working for macbook air

It's a macbook air A1370, iOS 10.8.3. The build-in camera is not working. Both Facetime and photobooth show that the camera is not connected. I checked the system info, under the usb session, the build-in camera is there. I followed some posts and reset the SMC, not helping.
    What should I do?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

tdingsh wrote:... Is there a way to re install the camera driver? ...
Yes.  Follow the instructions for reinstalling your Mac OS X.  All necessary drivers are automatically installed by the OS X installer.
tdingsh wrote:... Apparently ... computer is not detecting the in-built camera ...
By using your Mac''s (option) > System Information... menu command, you can be certain whether your Mac detects its camera.
When the System Information window opens, click on "USB" under "Hardware" in the sidebar.  Then look in the USB Device Tree window pane that opens when you select "USB". Click ALL right-facing triangles ( ▶) so they point down (▼) and reveal all individual items.
If your camera is nowhere in the USB Device Tree window pane, your Mac does NOT recognize the cam.
Resetting the SMC using the instructions for your specific Mac model may restore camera function.

  • Letter keys are not working on MacBook Air when playing games?

Hello. I'm using 10.6.6 on my MacBook Air 2.1 (2009 model).
I've got a really strange issue when playing games (any game produces this issue). ONLY the letter keys aren't working. The rest is working - numbers, function keys, arrows, tab, enter, delete, etc. Only the keys A to Z are not working.
This happens both on native games (like Hedgewars from App Store) and ported ones (like Need for speed).
    What's the issue?
    Thank you!

    Bump.

  • Handoff not working with Macbook air (mid 2012)

So, I just updated to Yosemite and I have enabled all the settings on my Macbook Air (mid 2012), iPhone and iPad.  Turned on blutooth, same wifi network, etc...  Handoff DOES work from my Mac to the iPhone but will not work from my iPhone to my mac.  I've searched high and low and can't figure out why its not working...  Any ideas?

*UPDATE* I was able to drop a file to my iPhone via AirDrop FROM my MBP to iPhone. However, I've still been unable to do the reverse (iPhone to MBP).
Same exact situation with same exact MBP (mid 2012 machine). iPhone 5S running iOS 8. I had been trying to go iPhone to MBP for about 30 minutes with no success. Neither Handoff or AirDrop would work. The MBP would recognize the iPhone in AirDrop, but the iPhone would never recognize the MBP as a location to "drop" to.
After reading you post, I tried the reverse (MBP to iPhone). I started an e-mail and got the mail icon on my iPhone lock screen. However, when trying to access the message on the iPhone i received connectivity errors and the "draft" never loaded.
Perhaps the server on the cloud they use for the handoff/airdrop/continuity feature is overloaded due to the rollout. Either way it's entirely more complex to use then it should be.

  • Skype not working on MacBook Air

I use Skype on my iMac without any problems; however it will not work on my new MacBook Air. I have tried everything suggested in the forum and nothing works.
I get a message "Sign In Error...Wrong Password". However, this is the correct Skype Name and Password that work just fine on my iMac.
Other times I just get the spinning ball which goes on forever and never connects.
I tried to post a message in the Skype forum but it doesn't even recognize my email address!
Someone said something about downloading Flash to the Air?
Is this an Apple problem or a Skype problem?
    Thanks for your help....David

The first time I tried Skype on my new MB Air it showed as if me and my husband were both off-line, when in fact we were on-line. So I updated Skype - same problem. I then closed Skype and re-opened. I clicked "Always Allow" when it asked if it could access my pw keychain. Then instead of calling my husband from my Skype contact list I typed his Skype name into the search field and called him from there. Suddenly we both showed up on-line and everything worked.
I suggest that you try creating a new Skype identity and see if it works.

  • Camera not working on macbook air

I have a macbook air (bought this year), mavericks 10.9.4 and my camera isn't working. When I opened FaceTime, it did nothing and when I opened PhotoBooth, there was I sign for loading (but nothing happened) and the little green light besides the camera was blinking. I just tried resetting and logging with another username but nothing happened. What should I do ?

I tried everything on that list, I even reset the SMC but it's still not working. Also the camera isn't detected in the USB header (before and after reseting SMC)...

  • My headphone is not working on macbook air 11

I have a macbook air 11", and after upgrading to mountain lion, my headphones are not working.
I have tried with multiple headphones and multiple software (itunes, skype, etc.), and I can´t hear.

    First, turn the volume up.
    Just kidding.
    Do the internal speakers work?
Check Audio MIDI Setup (Applications -> Utilities).
If all looks good but still no sound, ask yourself - and check - if any 3rd-party apps or drivers are installed and running (-> Login Items?) that deal with sound. Update to ML-compatible versions or completely remove them.

  • Airport Express not working for MacBook Air, ok for iMac

I connect to the internet via wireless broadband; the ethernet cable from the broadband antenna plugs into my Airport Express router.  I run both my 27" iMac desktop and my 13" Mac Book Air off the Airport Express router.  To the best of my knowledge, nothing has changed with my internet provider's settings.
Since Friday, the MacBook Air internet connection barely works; if a page loads, it takes forever (and I have a very fast broadband connection.)  Checking the same connection on the iMac has no delay and loads instantly.  On the laptop, if the page does load, and I click a link on that page, the link takes me to a new page requesting me to log in to my internet provider, or just fails to load.  I get lots of "page failed to load; interneet connection was reset....".
I have checked network settings on both machines and they appear to be just fine.  I have run diagnostics and it shows everything working fine.
I ran Disk Utility (permissions repair and verify disk) and have no problems.
I have tried restarting the laptop several times.
    Software is up to date.
I don't think it's the internet server or the connection since it's working on the desktop Mac.
I'd appreciate any suggestions or things to try; I read about doing soft and hard resets but am reluctant to try that since Airport is working for the desktop computer just fine.
