Wd time machine, my book studio won't go to standby since Mavericks update

My western digital " my book studio" won't go to standby since updating to mavericks today. It backs up etc, but when you put the mac to sleep it used to also sleep the time machine, as the light on the front went off and lit every few minutes then off again. Anyone know how to update?
Any help is appreciated.

Is your drive connected via Firewire?  I encountered the same problem with my 2 MyBook Studio II drives connected via Firewire to mid-2010 MacBook Pro.  I reconnected the drives via USB and now they generally spin down as normal.  There are still occasions where they don't spin down when I put the machine to sleep, but a second attempt usually does the trick.

Thank You. This helps me alot to get into the masters and to see events and photos in a utilitarian way, but it is not as easy as viewing the normal iphoto format to find photos.  Can I do something else or did I not do something right to not see normal iphoto in Time Machine ?

  • ITunes won't launch since maverick update on late 2010 macbook air

have tried downloading and reinstalling itunes on my late 2010 macbook air, but since maverick update itunes will not lauch and has to be force quit in order to close, this happens instantly on launch??

My machine was running quite slow too, especially boot time. Repairing permissions and zapping PRAM seemed to help out a lot. Further, if you want, you can disable hibernation and delete sleep image. I realize that most that run a Mac don't expect to do any tweaking, and hopefully Apple will come out with a SP soon that 'fixes' some of the issues that many are having. I don't think having 2GB of memory is the main issue, as many with 8GB of RAM are having the same issue. I did a lot of tweaking and Lion is working as well as Snow Leopard was on my MBA 11" with 2GB of RAM. You can also successfully run monoligual on your MBA, get rid of language packs you don't need and save 1.5GB.

Simple process. If an iPhone go to the Apple Store and not Verizon
the phone from Verizon will be a refurbished device and not new unless under the 14 day worry free guarantee

  • My Book Studio won't spin back up

I just bought a 1gb WDC My Book Studio drive. It has the same power-management features as another drive I have; after a few minutes of idle time, it spins down. When you access it again, it spins up.
The only problem is, it hangs Finder when it powers down. If I try to open the disk, it spins up fine (I can hear it), but Finder just sits there and beachballs. It never recovers. If I unplug the drive, Finder throws me an error about not putting ejecting the disk. If I then plug it back in, it does not show up; I must power the drive down and back up for it to be recognized again.
The drive is quad-interface, and the problem occurs when connected by USB or FireWire 800. I haven’t plugged it in to the FW400 port, and I don’t have an eSATA port.
Any thoughts? This worked fine with my previous drive, a 300gb Buffalo. Is this an issue with my laptop, or a problem with the drive?
I’m sort of leaning towards a problem with the drive.

I talked to a WD rep on the phone and he told me to download a program that would disable the spindown "feature". The only thing is it's only made for windows (found here http://support.wdc.com/download/index.asp?swid=17). I saw when I was first looking that someone had come up with the idea of using crontab to execute the command "touch" on a hidden file on the drive every five minutes (found here http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=298694). When I tried to do this I was met with resistance as I found out that since Tiger, Mac OS X no longer uses crontab, it uses LaunchD. So I gave a shot at editing a LaunchD file for this and had no luck...then someone turned me on to Lingon (free http://lingon.sourceforge.net/) which is supposed to make this east to do. I could not figure out for the live of me what I was doing wrong, but here I sit watching this drive spin up and down day in and day out...I know you can here me mybook...your probably plotting your revenge to die on me once I download 600 gigs worth of data...not on my watch you won't...NOT ON MY WATCH! MUHAHAHAHAha cough ahem...anyway...can someone figure this out so we don't have to endure this external drive torture?

  • After a time machine restore my iPhoto won't open

A few days ago my iPhoto went completely crazy.  I had quadruples of some pictures and events.  My photo amount increased at least 300 percent to 222,000 pictures.  After reading about what to do I did a time machine restore to the iPhoto before this problem happened.  After restoring my iPhoto it won't open at all anymore.  I have version 9.5.1 of iPhoto.  I have not yet downloaded the Yosemite upgrade because a program that I use often is not compatible.  How do I get my iPhoto to open with the restores iPhoto?

How did you do the "restore?" Did you restore the library from the pictures folder?

  • External HDD (for Time Machine backup) detected but won't mount on desktop

I have been using this external HDD as my Time Machine backup for many months now. No desktop display settings have been changed (I checked), but now it won't mount on my desktop. I suspect one of my kids was banging around on the keyboard, as they have done in the past, and renamed it. Unfortunately it appears they renamed it to NULL this time around. I didn't think that was possible, but I've plugged it into 3 different Windows and iMac machines, and in all cases the external drive gets detected, but then in all cases it doesn't mount. The Volume Label does appear blank in the device properties.
Is there a way to access my drive again to rename it? Will that allow it to mount again? Or is there a way to access it to just reformat the whole darn thing?
    Thanks!
    Tom

I don't think it's possible to have a null name for a drive so i suspect there is a problem with it. open disk utility. does it show the name of the drive? try repairing it (repair disk not permissions). if that doesn't help you can always reformat it with Disk Utility. select the whole drive ( model, not name) and use the partition tab.

  • TS1963 Migrating from Time Machine onExternal Disk,  Why won't Migration Assistant see my USB Connected external disk drive?

I had to format my internal disk drive on my MacBook Pro, and reload Mountain Lion 10.8.3.   The startup assistant could not see my external disk drive with the Time Machine backup files.  After many tries I told it to skip restoring the files and let it boot up.  I was able to see my 1 TByte external drive and could see the Time Machine files using Finder.
I started the Migration Assistant and told it to migrate from Time Machine Files on an external drive.  It also did not see the backup drive.  The only drive icon it showed was the Macintosh HD (my internal drive).
Isn't it supposed to show you the drive you are moving the files from?  I tried starting it and it looked like it was going to try to migrate the files from the internal drive (to where I don't know, back to itselfl?)  Or  do I just not understand.  Is it seeing the external drive, without identifying it (in the Migration Asst,)?
Really looks like it is going to back up  the internal HD with files that are on the internal HD and not from Time Machine.
I need to restore my files and have been told I need to do so using Migration Assistant and not Time Machine.
Help pleae and soon, need to get my taxes finished!
    Thanks!

I'm surprised that no one replied to this.  But I learned a few things that may be helpful to some of you with this same question.
When you restore data from an external disk drive with Time Machine files on it.  As you move through the dialog (in either System Startup or in the Migration Assistant) it will ask if you want to restore from an external disk with Time Machine files.  If you select this option, it will show you only one Icon.  You will expect to see your external disk drive listed as the source of the restore.  The icon that is shown will look like your ilnternal drive and will be labeled something like Macintosh HD.  That is not your internal drive, but is your backup drive.  It is labeled  the same as your internal disk drive and it is telling you that you have found the backup for your internal disk drive.
Would be nice if Apple would put a note of explanation about this as part of that dialog.  I wasted several hours trying to make it work  Finally I took a chance and selected the drive shown and it did restore my system.  I ended up with two users since I did it from Migration Assistant.  Had I done it from the System Startup, there would only be the one user.

  • Time Machine Disk Full but won't delete older backups?

My Time Machine has worked since day one. And when my 1TB disk gets full, it deletes the older backups and makes room for new ones.
However, since last week, it tells me there is an error, the disk is full, and I need to make room for XXXX amount of gigs before the back up can be completed.

  • Time machine "hung up" and won't finish a backup

TM was working fine for me. But it has sat at the same place for almost 20 hours now. I have plenty of disk space. The progress shows it is stuck at 40.3MB of 145.9MB. An OSX update was installed yesterday, is that the reason? Any steps to get this back on track would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Normally, a long 'Preparing' session after an update is OK. If you take a look at the Console logs Time Machine is reporting that your backups need "deep traversal". That's fine. Time Machine knows what is wrong and how to fix it. Let it do it's thing. If you have alot if data, it may take quite awhile.
After your update to 10.5.5 Time Machine realized the system no longer matched what it looked like during the previous backup. So it has determined that it's earlier catalogue of what-should-be-where is 'untrustable'. So it is going to go item-by-item comparing the before and after of your system.
However, in your instance, it is simply taking too long and seems to have choked.
    *Anti-Virus Software*
Running anti-virus software can interfere with the backup process. Either disable it altogether, or try the suggestion outlined here, “If you use third-party anti-virus scanning software and have issues, make sure your Time Machine back up folder (Backups.backupdb on the Time Machine disk) is excluded from virus scanning.” (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1516)
    *Reselect Backup Disk*
There is the possibility that the first backup after a major OS update will fail. The Console may report that the backup disk is ‘not owned by backupd’. Essentially, Time Machine no longer recognizes the backup disk.
Go to System Preferences --> Time Machine.
    Click the "Change Disk..." button.
Select "None" and click "Stop Backing Up".
Now click "Choose Backup Disk" and reselect your drive again.
Close System Preferences and try backing-up again.
Let us know if this helps.

  • Time machine backup disk full, won't backup

My backup disk recently filled up. Now I get a message saying:
"Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to "Backup disk."  The backup disk ran out of space unexpectedly. Time Machine will try to make more space available by removing expired backups during the next scheduled backup."
When I then manually click on "Back up now", it runs fine. But then an hour later the same thing happens.
I thought that with a full backup disk, Time machine is supposed to automatically make space by dumping the oldest backup... Right????
My backup disk is 2TB, it is backing up a 750GB internal disk plus an external disk with about 250GB on it.
    Thanks!
    Dan

  • When entering Time Machine, sometimes backup list won't populate

I notice that on occasion, I'll enter Time Machine (usually this happens the first time after booting) and on the right, there will be no list of backups - no backup history at all.
If I exit Time Machine and re-enter, the list will be populated as normal and all my backups will appear in the list.
    Has anyone else noticed this?

I tried both repairing the Time Machine volume (no errors) as well as trashing the .plist file, yet unfortunately the problem remains.
Further, the problem is intermittent, which is never good when it comes to troubleshooting.
The first reboot reproduced the problem, the second and third didn't, then the forth reboot did.
Under such circumstances, what else can be done? I can only think of reinstalling the OS and migrating all files except for users, or starting a new backup series.
You can do either, of course, but I'd try creating another user, to see if the problem persists. If it doesn't, then you know it's something associated with the first user.
If both users are the same, then I'd be inclined to put up with it for a while, to see if others are having the same trouble and what, if anything, turns up as a solution. It doesn't sound like you'll actually lose anything in the meantime.

  • Time machine icon in menu bar doesn't spin anymore in Mavericks

On three separate machines, new iMac, MacBook Pro, and Air, menu bar Time Machine icon no longer spins when backing up.

Maybe it has to do with Maverick's memory/power usage techniques. By not having the Time Machine icon spin it save one processing and power. That's my uneducated guess.
I will say that I am not a fan of it either as it looks like the menu is stuck or has crashed rather than actually doing something. That is why I came here. It comes across as something being wrong.
It is not a very good icon or representation of what is going on. They could have at least moved the clock hands to another position or something. The small additional arrow is just not enough.
    Cheers, Andrew.
