We have about 5 devices in our family. My daughter's and mine don't work anymore, ostensibly because we have "too many". It has been so long since I loaded them in, I don't remember how I registered them. What can I do to reactivate IPOD, SHUFFLE, ETC.
We have about five devices in our family which have been deactivated. It has been so long since I registered them -years- and I don't recall how I did it. For instance, my daughter's IPod from when she was young doesn't work and neither does her IPod Nano. She can't get any of her music. My Shuffle doesn't work. I am embarrassed that I feel like having Apple products is too complicated for me. I can barely get through all the levels of logging in, let alone how to make the devices work again. Somewhere along the way I seem to remember getting a message that we had too many devices on our account. Which account? I have given up on this so many times and now it is years later and I am trying again. How can I get some meaningful customer service to use the products and music I bought and paid for?
I think in previous incarnations, people would have jumped all over you for your approach, but the Lion operating has generated decidely mixed or even negative reviews from users. So no one seems to disagree with you. I think many folks are simply staying with 10.6 and waiting to see if OS 10.8 is better than 10.7. I've mostly avoided upgrading OS's, or when I do I jump over one version completely because I've waited long enough that I'm two versions behind.
Here are the things that will/would motivate me to update the OS:
* incompatibility with MS-Office (I'm not a MS-Office fan but I do need to use it)
* incompatibility with flash or other tools needed to view modern web content (this might be a while as I am still using several different Macs, the oldest being a 2005 PPC iMac with 10.5.8 and an fairly old/outdated flash, but it seems to still do ok with most web content). Our 2008 Intel Core 2 Duo iMac runs 10.6.8 and can do just about anything we need -- like you, I decided not to go to Lion because it didn't look like much of an improvement.
* incompatibility with various commercial software, such as TurboTax, or with web sites I use to manage financial accounts and such things
We got my daughter a new Macbook Air just before she started college, and Lion plus a new Macbook Air model came out a month later. I am glad now about it actually, I think some of the Lion "issues" would have annoyed her greatly (especially the odd dropping of wireless access points under Lion, everyone is on wireless at colleges now). I'm hoping that the 10.8 OS will be better than Lion. We had (probably still have) a certificate for a free Lion upgrade but we decided not to use it.

Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Users & Groups
Decide on whether to setup as Admin or Standard User.
Switch to the New User by logging out under the Apple in the Menu Bar or use Fast User Switching
Fast User Switching allows other users to leave current applications and windows open. Depending on RAM, you might need to log out rather than use FUS. -
My friend let me use her apple id so i could wright you guys. I cant get in to my ipod touch. I lost it a while a go and just found it. I cant rember my itunes id or password to it. Apparently some of your "good" add-ons do not work right with FF4. If you have a problem with YAHOO MAIL, start FF4 in Safe Mode (Restart with add-ons disabled from the Help menu). Then try your Yahoo again. If everything works, then the problem is with one of your add-ons. You can selectively work out which add-on is the problem. For a lot of these user problems, this should help... worth a try anyway.

I have multiple devices in my family. Each of us has an iPhone and an iPad. Is there a way for each of us to have our own Apple ID but one account so we can all get the same music, movies, books, etc. I can't see paying twice for something in the same family.
Welcome to the world of digital media. Your can't really transfer it. I don't know what the rules are about transferring to your spouse but I do know that in some cases when you die, your heirs cannot inherit your digital media. This is why there is still an advantage to buying the CD since the usage rights belong to whomever holds the physical media.
A possible workaround is to burn the songs to a music CD with yout account (tracks only without song titles) and then having your wife upload it as a regular music CD onto her account. It's been a while since i've done this so I'm not sure if it would work now.
Please note that I'm not advocating copyright and/or TOS violations. I'm only suggesting ways to copy music for your own personal use which has traditonally been permitted. I only did this because I wanted to convert iTunes songs to mp3 files so I could burn them onto a data CD for use in my car. It would make sense that since married couples are a joint entity, this would be personal use.
Also, I'm not a lawyer so don't take this as legal advice. -
How to handle Multiple devices in our family,
Hi all, I need help. I do not know what to do now that I have many I devices in our family. I have three iPhones, an iPod, iPad, Apple TV
and iMac. Right now, all the devices are set up on one Apple ID, except for a new iPhone that has not been set up yet.
What is the best way to deal with this situation? I would like to be able to use the Find IPhone on any device to find the other. I would also like each device to be able to use face time and iChat independently. Is it possible?
I was told to set up separate ICloud accounts, but since the devices are assigned to an apple ID already? Is that possible? Sorry about being so naive.
Thanks for any advice or insight you can offer!You're welcome. And you are correct, an iCloud account is an Apple ID; but you can still migrate your devices to their own account even if they are currently sharing a single account.
One person's device(s) can keep the current account. Decide who will be migrating to a new account. On their devices, go to Settings>iCloud, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account. (This will only delete the account from the device, not from iCloud. The device[s] that will be keeping the account will not be effected by this.) When prompted about what to do with the iCloud data, be sure to select Keep On My [iDevice]. Next, set up a new iCloud account using a different Apple ID (if you don't have one, tap Get a Free Apple ID at the bottom)*. Then turn iCloud data syncing for contacts, etc. back to On, and when prompted about merging with iCloud, choose Merge. This will upload the data to the new account.
When you're done, if you have any data in the accounts that you don't want you will then have to go to icloud.com on your computer and sign into each iCloud account separately and manually delete it from each account.
* Each Apple ID will need a separate non-Apple email address. If you don't have these you can get free email accounts from gmail. Apple will send a verification email to the account you provide. You will have to click on the Verify Now link to verify the account and ID, after which you can use it to set up the iCloud account.
Finally, if you are sharing the same ID for iMessage, on these other devices go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive, tap the ID, sign out, then sign back in with their new ID (so each persons device[s] are using a separate ID). For FaceTime, do the same thing in Settings>FaceTime. -

Thanks for the reply. I think I figured out the problem. Apple has confused (at least in my mind) the different IDs that people can have. In the iCloud settings, they use the term Apple ID and not iCloud ID. I guess there really is no such thing as an iCloud ID. There are Apple IDs with various attributes. This is not clearly explained or easy to see (how could I look up to see if my Apple ID is associated with iTunes for example?).
I created, what I thought were iCloud IDs for each family member, but we all use my Apple ID for iTunes.
One other question - why does the syncing of Notes using iCloud require an @me.com email account. That makes no sense to me.

You can't tell which device a purhcase was made on, but if your family members each have their own iTunes account to which your card is linked then you can check the purchase history on each of those accounts via the Store > View Account menu option on your computer's iTunes - that should have 'purchase history' section with a 'see all' link to the right of it

No, you can only sign up to iTunes Match and upload music to it from a computer's iTunes - it can't be done from iOS devices

My husband and I have upgraded our phones (iPhone 4s and iPhone 5) to the iPhone 5s. We have given 2 of our kids the "old" phones and want to set them up as an iPod touch. Both kids have email and need to be able to text (iMessage).
I have read multiple posts on how to do this and I am still confused.
Apple ID/ICoud:
We want to be able to monitor what they do, but do not want their devices linked to our emails/contacts/etc... Each kid has their own email account. So, from what I have read the best way to do this is to use our family Apple ID, but set them up with a separate iCloud account? Is this correct?
Reset/Restore/DFU:
To start fresh we have done multiple factory resets. I did one that someone said was a DFU and a plan ol' factory reset, etc... Not sure the difference. However, when I do that I get the "hello" screen and am able to start setting the phone up anew. However, when I go to set the phone up as an iPod I end with the same result.
So, here is what I am doing (tell me what I am doing wrong):
Hello Screen
Asks me to select language and selecting: English
Select Your Country or Region: United States
Choose a Wi-Fi Network: select my home wi-fi network
Enter password: entered my home wi-fi network password
Activiate iPhone - wants me to enter Apple ID and Passwordsays that this iphone is currently linked to an Apple ID (k*******@gmail.com). Sign in with the Apple ID that was used to set up this iPhone.
Location Services - I have enabled location services
Set Up iPhone
Set Up as New iPhone
Apple ID
Options are to sign in with your Apple ID or Create a Free Apple ID
Or I could "skip this step"
I signed in with my Apple ID
Terms and Conditions - Agree
iCloud - I can select either to use iCloud or Don't Use iCloud - I selected use iCloud
Find My iPhone - I can select either to use find my iPhone or to not - I selected use find my iphone
Once I do this it says iMessage and FaceTime and shows the following:
my email
my other child's cell phone number
and my husband's work phone number
This is where things do not make sense. I only want the phone set up with the current child's email address. Where did I go wrong?There are a number of Apple services: iMessage, FaceTime, iCloud, Game center, Find My iPad, etc.
Now, to share apps, music and books you need to have the same Apple ID:
iPad's Settings > iTunes & App Stores > Apple ID > Your purchasing Apple ID.
For the other service, your wife should have her own Apple ID.
All she needs is a valid e-mail address, apply Apple ID below:

If you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) set up on your account then steps 1 to 5 on the page that you posted from should let you reset them : go to https://appleid.apple.com/ and click 'Manage your Apple ID' on the right-hand side of that page and log into your account, then click on 'Password and Security' on the left-hand side of that page and on the right-hand side you should see an option to send security question reset info to your rescue email address.
If you don't have a rescue email address (you won't be able to add one until you can answer 2 of your questions) then you won't get the reset option - you will need to contact iTunes Support or Apple to get the questions reset.
e.g. you can try contacting iTunes Support : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Account Management , and then 'Forgotten Apple ID security questions'
or try ringing Apple in your country and ask to talk to the Accounts Security Team : http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57

I have about 130 gigs of movies on my iTunes and was wondering if I can just put them on my backup hard drive and remove them from my main computer to free up the space.
I haven't done this with an external drive, but I would imagine it works the same way as if you have multiple internal drives. Also hopefully it works with less headache in OSX than in windows.
Anyway, move all your music over to your external, and then go into itunes -> preferences -> advanced -> iTunes media folder location. Navigate to your drive, and pick the folder you want. Ensure that your folders are set up like they are in your ~/Music/iTunes folder, or wherever your iTunes is currently pointing. Then quit and restart itunes. If your music doesn't show up, try dragging your music folder from your external onto itunes, and it will hopefully update your library.xml.
As far as Jerry's problem goes, you could try adding another music folder to your library.xml, but I really have no idea whether this will work or not. If you want to give it a try (can't promise you won't corrupt your library.xml, so make a copy beforehand) you can find the music folder xml element right near the top of the xml file (open it with textedit/textmate/whatever text editor you want (NOT WORD)). Curious to know if this works, and if it doesn't I have other ideas so let me know.
