Weather App Affecting my Data Usage

Hi Community,
Back in October 2013 when I changed my IPhone from a 4S to a 5S I had to go from an “Unlimited” plan to Tiered plan.  I went to a tiered planned capped at 2 GB per billing cycle.  This didn’t bother me because I would never use all of my allocated data and I usually came in way under 2gb’s
Under my new plan, I set up my data alerts to monitor my usage.   This past week on tuesday, I was notified that my usage was at 75% of the data allowed.   I immediately called VZW to ask how and the tech said that my phone had streamed for an inordinate amount of time around 18 hours while using a app, on the days where my usage was high.  The tech was unable to tell me which app, but advised me to take it into the store immediately.
I took my phone into the store and luckily the manager had the same issue on his IPad.  He replaced the Sim Card and reset the settings on my phone and credited my account $20 to pay for the extra usage.   Really great customer service!!!
Monitoring my data usage, I noticed that my phone would incrementally use the data plan even while on my wifi.    It would only do it in 8 hour increments, I was led to a previous post via Google (on the apple forums) and I found that the culprit may that I had set up my phone to automatically send diagnostic data.
I shut this feature off, being nosy I looked at the data that was being sent and noticed two odd diagnostic reports titled: Weather_2013_11.08_17:55 and Weather +Stacks 11/10 20:37:47.
The latter (Weather +Stacks 11/10 20:37:47.) diagnostic report I can only assume was informing me that the weather app stayed opened beyond its allocated time.  Which prevented the phone from sleeping so it the OS finally crashed the crashed the program.
Also I assume that the report was informing me that informed me in the app it had stayed connected to the weather server for 66,447 seconds, which is about 18.45 hours and used 1147387904 bytes of data or just over 1 GB of usage….
Now I’m not saying that these separate instances are related, but the interesting thing 11/10 I was shown according to VZW that I had amassed 66.51 MB’s.
I am wondering if anyone else has seen this correlation.  I have attached screenshots to clarify any confusing parts of the story.   there are three pics, so scroll all the way down

Settings > Cellular only counts cellular data.  I can verify that because I'm on AT&T and that carrier offers a service whereby you can telephone *DATA and receive a text message from them telling your month-to-date cellular data usage.  I can compare that number to what I see in Settings > Cellular and the two are pretty well equivalent.
Again, I do a Settings > Cellular > Reset Statistics at the end of every billing month.
UPDATE - I said "month-to-date cellular data usage" above.  I should have said "billing period to date."

  • How will the itunes match app affect my data usage?

how will the itunes match app affect my data usage? It seems to take a while to connect and start playing so i'm assuming if my range isnt the best it will drop out like a bad radio station???

What I have done is create playlists and I'll download the playlists to the iPhone while I'm at home, on Wi Fi, and listen while I'm out and about. I've only downloaded the occasional tracks on 3G (mainly because at&t's network was so terrible). This method worked pretty well for me.
Incidentally, iTunes Match should not be used as a substitute for a backup: FAQ:  Why iTunes Match can NOT be used as a backup!

  • Is there an app that shows data usage at the top of screen on a iPhone

I'm looking for an app that will run a data usage readout at the top of my iPhone 5 running in real time in the background
Does anyone know of an app that does that?

I have 6 bluetooth devices paired with my iphone.  The speakers (same brand for home and office) are in position 1 and 2.  (office is number 2)
When I come into my office in the morning, the power to the speakers is already on.  I have to go to settings/bluetooth and select the speakers in my office in order to connect.  It does not connect automatically.  When I leave my office to go elsewhere in the building that's out of range, if I take my iPhone, I have to reconnect when I get back to my office.  I suppose I could turn the speakers off, then back on again, but that's just one more step I shouldn't have to take.  Interesting enough, when I enter my family room with my speakers at home (position 1) the speakers connect automatically.
What I'm looking for is an app that lets me select specific bluetooth devices and places an icon on my screen.  Then all I'd need to do is press that icon and automatically be connected to the bluetooth device I want.
BTW, I have a bluetooth hands free device in my car. (position 3 on the list)  When I get in, I always have to do the same thing to connect to it.

  • What is the best app for managing data usage on an iPhone 4S?

What app are most of you using to manage your data usage on an iPhone 4S.

Assuming that DonXX means 'monitor' rather than 'manage', my experience may be of relevance.
I have a data usage problem with my iPhone 4. It started for me when I 'upgraded' to ioS 6. This may or may not be a coincidence. I went from an average monthly data usage of 150MB/month (a 2 year average) to 8.1 GB up/download in 28 days. To try and track down which app is The Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal, I've just installed the Onavo Count app. This claims to monitor the data usage of each app. My sights at the moment are on Skype. I only use iCloud for Calendar syncing.

  • APP TO TRACK DATA USAGE FROM EACH APP

Guys, i am experiencing the same. My data package got over, and i took time to recharge ( 4 days). And during these 4 days, my phone battery was amazing, i used to charge it once in 2 days.
Im sure there is some app that uses data extensively that screws our battery.
When i connected to wifi , i noticed the battery getting low as well.
If only APPLE was smart enough, to create some software that tells us, that its using this much amount of data and at what time, then this battery issue will be resolved.
But that wont happen, because then they wont be a lot of free too good to be true free apps, which collects data and whatsoever without we know.
Until then, enjoy your life with a USB cable in your pocket and a car charger is your car, to charge it thrice a day.
    Thanks.

Dear Diesel , As mentioned earlier if APPLE was smart , but it seems there are smarter people creating paid apps for the same.
Nevertheless , my point in reference to APPLE, is they should create an option in the iOS , similar to the cellular data usage.
    SETTINGS>GENERAL>USAGE>CELLULAR USAGE
If this is taken note of seriously by APPLE, then only we could have a greater battery life.
Hope you got a clear picture now.

  • Is there aproblem with the settings app measuring cell data usage incorrectly?

My Settings app in my iPad (3rd gen) under General>Usage>Cellular Usage is telling me I have used 10.2 TB received and 713 GB sent. The Cellular Network Data>Usage had been only 240MB in received data just two days before. I had not used the iPad in two days. It was sleeping and not shut off. My battery level also had only changed a few percent. My Verizon account is still showing the correct 240 MB received. Is it possible for the iPad to continuously access cellular data while asleep? Could this be a problem with the Settings app? Could this be from location services? I had the Map open, but it had been closed. It was still showing in the background apps witht a double touch of the start button.

Thanks SergZak. My iPad has only been active for about two weeks. I don't see how it could have accumulated such an astronomically high number. I found one other thread from April that showed the same problem with  a number of other users (New iPad shows incorrect cellular data usage statistics?). I am hoping that Apple is aware of this and working on a correction. Although upon checking my Verizon account the numbers were accurate to true usage, I am concerned that incorrect accumulation of statistics could lead to overcharges. If I had actually used 10 TB (10,000 GB) of data at $10 per GB over my allotmet of 2 GB, I would have owed Verizon $98,000.

  • I am wondering if the data from data speed test apps affects my overall usage from my plan

Yesterday as we were coming home on the highway, i decided to test the connection speed using an app from the google play store. I downloaded it because I had about 11MB or so used that day and decided to use my data. Once it finished downloading and installed I opened it and begun a test. It gave me a 15mb download and 2mb upload result so I did one more test. As I was doing the second test I get an alert about my data limit I set up for the day to pace out the 2GB I have for the month. I went to check my apps and saw I used about 40-50MB since using the data speed test app. Do these tests count against my actual plan?

Yes speed tests count against your cap if as Ann says you;re using them to test you mobile data. I think this where I see people complaining about their caps being exceeded but claim they don't do anything. People don't realize that speed tests are going to use 50 MB and even up to 80 MB of data. You do just 1 speed test in a day and you will use 1.5 GB to 2.5 GB a month. And some people feel the need to do 3, 5, 10 tests a day.

  • The ' usage' app showing incorrect data usage.

The amount of data used shown in usage app is incorrect when i checked the actual amount used with carrier.
Sometimes its much larger and sonetimes much smaller than actual amount used.

  • App to check data usage

Is there an app that can tell me what app is using the most data?

No, no apps would have access to the necessary API's to provide such information.

  • App for monitoring Data Usage

I have lines with the 150MB data limit ... what's the best app for making sure we stay within the plan limits?  Thx much

Calling #data tends to update the quickest
You can add the My Verizon app, but the info does not update immediately.
If Smart phones, just the updating of apps and syncing will push you over the limit without extensive use of a WiFi Connection.

  • How can I reduce excessive data usage?

My wife and I recently moved to the country and have no internet available by a physical cable or wire from an ISP.    Our internet service is provided through a Verizon Jetpack that we lease from Verizon.    We have an iPhone 4s, iPhone 5s, an iPad 1, and an iPad 2 (both iPads are WiFi only)
Our problem is excessive data usage.  Prior to our move, our iPhones each used approx .2GB per month.   16 days into our current billing month, the iPhones have each used approx 1.2GB, but our Jetpack (which creates our home WiFi for our iPads) has already used 10GB.  We do not stream anything on our iPads.  We use them in the evening for surfing the internet, checking Facebook, and playing Words With Friends.  That's about it. The Verizon online data calculator indicates we shoud be using about 4GB per month based on our iPad usage.   Yet my data usage log says that one night this week between 7:30 PM and 11:30 PM, our Jetpack used a full 1GB.  Is it possible that our Jetpack is simply "burning up" GBs while we sleep?

On my iPhone 4 running iOS 6,  Settings > General > Usage quotes the installed size of the apps not the data usage. I've just installed the Onavo Count which claims to record data usage of each app so one can see which the greedy ones are.

  • Itunes account cellular data usage

My phone has finished in a couple of days my 2GB data plan. I reset the usage and turned off all cellular data but noticed that the one that consumes all the data is the "iTunes Accounts" in system services. Does anyone know how to turn this off or what to do so it does not consume all my cellular data? Thanks.

    Hey Krest666,
The last few things to try is to reset the settings on your iPhone to put that back to their defaults. It will not erase any content but you will have to go in set everything back to how you had it. The last thing to try is to restore your iPhone and set it up as new and test out those apps if the data usage turns back on.

  • "Feels like" temperature is Inaccurate in iOS7 weather app

Is anyone having this issue on their stock weather app?
The 'feels like' and actual temperatures are always the same. For example, right now in Worcester, MA the temperature is 19 F with 29mph winds and the feels like temperature is displayed as 19 F.
IIt looks like this is a Yahoo issue - their website shows the same temp for actual and feels like temp. Accuweather is reporting a temp of 20F and RealFeel of -6.

The weather app gets its data from Yahoo. It's a Yahoo problem.

  • 5C users Watch your cellular data usage!!

This needs to be brought up just a friendly heads-up in the 5c forum, as there are already long-running threads on this topic in the iPhone 5 forum.
I have owned a 5c for a week now, and have it activated along side my wifes 4s under our 2G shared data plan.  So far in that time 5c has used 3~4x the amount of cellular data, despite my wife using her 4s FAR more frequently (for apps) than I do on my 5c.
I have managed to throttle my data usage with now a better understanding of the following:
-Apps will use cellular data, even while connected to a wifi network.  So merging onto a wifi DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY PRIORITIZE it over the Verizon cellular data network.
-Closing out the app when finished does not stop it from using cellular data.  Many apps will still siphon cellular data, even though they are closed.... WITHOUT THE USER KNOWING IT.  Pay close attention to, and turn off cellular usage for those apps that don't need it.  Note you may have to manually re-activate cellular usage for the app when you use it outside wifi coverage.  This is a royal pain in the you know what.
-Deactivate notification center... or deactivate those parts of it you don't really need.  Personally I don't need any of it so I have it completely turned off.
-Turn off the "Background app Refresh" function.
    -Turn off "Location Services"
-In the "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" section turn off the Push function under "Fetch new data".  I have mine set to manual.
-Turn off LTE function.  The LTE part of the network is not even available to me where I live.  I found my phone was RAMPANTLY gobbling up cell data 24/7 and all hours of the night.  That data siphon stopped immediately when I turned off LTE.  Yes you are in essence using a slower cell network, but for me that doesn't matter since I am under a wifi network 99% of the time.  If I ever do need a fast cellular network I will have to manually turn on LTE.
As a final note, this is a SIGNIFICANT difference between the 4s and 5/5c/5s... and should be taken as a warning to anyone wanting to upgrade from the 4s to any of the "5" models.  My wifes 4s (on the latest iOS) does not require any of the actions above. Even with REGULAR use of her DOZENS of apps, her monthly data usage on the 4s has never exceeded ~1G over the past 2 years.  She never even turns them off, they are always open and minimized on her screen-top.
So in summary, turning off LTE has made a significant difference in my data usage (shown in kb), as shown below.
