Webloc File Set to Open in Safari Doesn't

This is a small problem that seems like it shouldn't exist.  Firefox is my default browser (set as default within Safari preferences).  I also keep current versions of Safari and Chrome on my computer.  I work at a college and, in order to access things like student records, class schedules, etc., I now must use Safari because the current versions of both Firefox and Chrome are no longer compatible with the (somewhat old) software used by the server for these services.
I created a webloc file that takes me to the log-in screen for all of my college's online services.  I did a getinfo on the webloc file and set it to open in Safari.  However, it always opens in Firefox (my default browser).  I know that the default handling for webloc files is to open them in Finder which automatically transfers to the default Web browser; however, I assumed that manually setting the webloc file to open in Safari would override that.  It clearly doesn't.
I would rather not set Safari to always open to that web location because I actually use Safari for other things such as when I encounter a site that isn't Firefox friendly.
Is there a simple set of Applescript commands that would open a particular URL in a specified browser?
Any other ideas?

Webloc files will always open in the default browser. The Open With setting in the Get Info window for them doesn't control anything and shouldn't be there.
To check a browser's AppleScript dictionary, launch the AppleScript Editor and choose Open Dictionary from the File menu.

  • Pdf files won't open in Safari running on a Mac

I just upgraded my MacBook Pro to Snow Leopard in preparation for Lion and ever since the upgrade, pdf files won't open in Safari.  I have Reader 9.4.5.  It opens documents that are on my machine, it just won't open in Safari, nor do the documents download.

MIght be helpful to disable Adobe plugin by going to Adobe Reader's Preferences -> Internet and unchecking "Display PDF in browser using".
Then dump the atrocious bloated Reader.
See this https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3252667?start=0&tstart=0 for further solutions.

Try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.

  • PDF files won't open in Safari

I'm not sure when this happened but it seems recently...when I go to sites which have pdf files attached (e.g. Yamaha electonics/support/user manuals)the pdf files no longer load within Safari nor download to be opened in their own window. I have Adobe Reader 8.0 and Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.0. Ho do I restore Safari's ablity to find the corrrect plug in and use it to open pdf files?

Open Adobe Reader, go to Preferences > Internet and disable the "Display PDF in browser using:" option, then quit; do the same for Acrobat Pro.
Quit Safari if it's running. Then copy and paste this command into Terminal:
defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitOmitPDFSupport -bool false
Press Enter or Return, then quit Terminal.
Restart Safari and try loading a PDF file; it should work perfectly.

  • PDF files will not open in Safari

When clicking on a link to a pdf file (example: <a href = 'xxx.pdf'>
I get a blank window. Have Acrobat, latest version installed. Is there a special process to install it in Safari?

    Hi...
    Go to  /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
Move the Adobe PDF Browser plugin to the Trash.
Quit then relaunch Safari to test.
If you have trouble finding the files..
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type this exactly as you see it here:
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
    Click Go

  • .pdf files do not open in Safari

Hi... I'm using a iMac (intel) OS 10.6.8 w/ Safari 5.1.7. I have Adobe Reader 10.1.3 and Adobe Prof 7.x.x.When ever I open a .pdf file in Safari. I get a black window. When I open the same file in Firefox, it works great! I'd much rather use Safari. What's my problem? I followed a thread that said to go to 'Adobe-prefs-internet-etc.....didn't help. Can a kind soul 'out there' hep?
    Thanks, Jack

    Back up all data.
Quit Safari. In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder... from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Copy the line of text below into the box that opens, and press return:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then launch Safari and test.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • Safari doesn't open properly at startup

    Hi everybody,
I've been browsing the forum a bit, but didn't find an answer to my question. Here it goes:
I have Safari added in my dock, and I marked it as 'open after login'. The same for Mail. When my mac has started up my Mail indeed opens, but Safari doesn't. To be more concrete, I see the 'topbar' opening but no actual screen opens. Mail however works perfectly.
Maybe this is a very small setting or such, but I can't seem to find it.
Could someone please help me with this one?
    Thanks!
    pytur

I see the 'topbar' opening but no actual screen opens
Make sure Safari is in the list in System Preferences > Accounts - Login Items
If it's there and you are only seeing the "topbar" when Safari opens, could be a third party Safari add on that's preventing Safari from loading the GUI and pages.

I downloaded an update for my Safari web browser to "snow leopard". When I click on the .dmg file, a window opens up with a .pkg file but when I click on the .pkg file I get a prompt saying that it doesn't know what program to open it with.

I suspect if you're trying to open a file in 08 that's been opened in 09 the file has been updated to 09 and will not open in 08.

    1. I burned a small hole in my screen, is that fixable/replaceable? 2. Even though I have my 15" MacBook Pro set to open to empty screen when I open Safari, it constantly opens multiple previous pages. It doesn't seem to matter what I do it just reverts back to opening multiple pages. Major security risk, my bank pages have popped back up after my computer has been shut down, account numbers and all. I took my computer to an Apple store and the genious there tols me...      "honey, you can't hold your laptop on your lap, that's the problem, it's getting too hot" he honestly said that. Could someone please help me? Thanks

Apple doesn't call its portable machines 'notebooks' instead of 'laptops' for nothing - using a MacBook Pro in your lap can cause some burns on your skin, poor ventilation, etc. So use it on a hard flat surface - not your lap, pillows, bedclothes, etc.
As for burning a hole in your screen, you'll have to revisit the Apple Store and see how much they would charge for a new screen. It's likely to be a bit expensive.
And if you've Safari set to re-open tabs when you restart, you can disable this feature -> Safari-Preferences-General.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Safari doesn't open PHP files

If i try to open a PHP file in safari, it shows the code. If the PHP file isn't local, for example, on a local website (using air sharing on my ipod touch and adding php files to it), it will download the file. If I open it there, it will only display the codes like it does on the original file on my mac. I'm trying to use wordpress but it doesn't work. Once I think i saw some of the page working (it was the login page and it was PHP). But i've tried everything i could do but it never worked again. Please help me! Thanks!

You don't open PHP files in Safari.
Safari doesn't know how to run PHP code so it just displays the file content.
You need to run them under a web server - the web server runs the code and outputs the appropriate content.
By default, on Mac OS X you start up the built-in web server (System Preferences -> Sharing -> Personal Web Sharing) and should place the files in /Library/WebServer/Documents/
You then access them in Safari via something like:
    http://localhost/my.php

  • Can't stop PDF files from opening in Safari

I prefer pdf files to download rather than open in Safari. I had no trouble setting this up with Acrobat 5.0 and OSX 10.3. I now have AcrobatPro 8.0.0, Safari 2.0.4, and OSX 10.4.8.
How do I disable this feature?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Have a look at this MacosXHints thread. Besides, entering the suggested Terminal command, I think it's important to move the Adobe PDF plug-in out of the Internet Plug-ins folder.
Give it a try. You'll see there is a "reverse" terminal command if it doesn't work.

  • Opening multiple .webloc files under Yosemite

If I try and open more than one .webloc file with Safari Version 8.0 (10600.1.25) under 10.10 (14A389), only one of the links load, and Safari throws a dialog that says:
You can’t open the application “Safari.app” because it is not responding.
For example, drag a few sites to your desktop - does seem to matter what they are or what content that have, select them all, and press command+O to open them (assuming Safari is set to your default browser). I have cleared all cache, all cookies, reset Safari, and disabled all extensions, all to no avail. If I click on them one at a time, all is well, and each weblog link opens in its own tab as expected per my settings. Sometimes two work, but I've never gotten three or more to work.
    Any suggestions are much appreciated!

Just an update - I also noticed if Safari is "busy" (e.g. downloading something large), and I do a Spotlight or Alfred Web search, a Finder dialog appears saying "Safari is no longer open."

  • Safari doesn't open anything

I was using Firefox for a long time (since I have my mac), and now with the new Safari for Windows and the tests and bla bla, I decided to try again.
It doesn't work! The Tabs are messed up. They are pretty big and are always "Untitled". If I enter an address in the address box and press enter, I receive the message: "No Address specified" Type the address for the page you would like to open.
On the "File" Menu the "open location" link is disabled "light gray" and I cannot use it...
I installed the latest beta version 3.0.2, but Still does the same....
    How can I fix it?

    Anybody? Please?

  • "Open with" Photoshop doesn't open the graphics file

I use an old version of Photoshop (6.0) - but it does all I need, which is the reason I haven't upgraded. Sometimes over the past few years, when I've installed the programme afresh (on a new PC, or after a reinstallation of XP for instance) I get the following annoyance and I wonder if anyone has any ideas how to solve it.
When I right-click on a jpg, bmp (etc. etc.) file and choose 'Open with  ...  Adobe Photoshop' from the context menu, this action opens up the PS programme, but the actual graphics file I have clicked on does not open with it. I have to browse for it from Photoshop once it has opened, which is annoying of course if the file is buried deep in a sub-sub-subfolder somewhere and/or I have many files to work with.
At first I tried uninstalling and reinstalling PS, but that doesn't fix the problem. Anyone know what I can do?
    Thanks,
    Martin

In the top dialog you can click on Change to set the default program to open the file type.
You can add other actions, like Print and Preview, by clicking on the Advanced button (see the lower dialog) and using New... .
You may need to click on Restore if you don't see an Advanced button.
I use PS to open and the Viewer to preview.
