Weird graphical artefacts -- black squares

Hi all,
I've got this weird graphics artefact that I sometimes see on my MBPro17. It's hard to describe, so I made a screenshot:
http://jfouhy.googlepages.com/mac-graphics-bug.jpg
(ignore the slight fuzzyness; that's just jpeg compression)
In this case, the boxes are black, but they're often red, or sometimes other colours. It only happens when I'm getting the graphics card to do something "difficult", eg expose with 100+ windows, 3d application (particularly if the 3d app doesn't have focus).
Anyone seen this before, or know what to do?

Yay artifacts rule
Through my experiences with artifacts I found out that it was a faulty graphics card. This was on a windows machine, so it could be a whole nother ball park with a Mac.
So maybe call Apple or go into an Apple Store and see what they can do fer ya

  • Weird behaviour - logged in twice?  black squares around focused objects?

Someone else was using my laptop yesterday at work and now I'm getting some odd behaviour. Functionally, everything seems to be okay, but there is a solid black square around GUI interface objects that I focus on in the OS. And clicking on the apple menu lists two instances of Log Out username, Restart, and Shut Down.
I tried repairing permissions and keychain access but I don't even know what to attribute this behaviour to.
Any help would be much appreciated..
    Thanks in advance,

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!!
Go to System Preferences > Universal Access and check the "VoiceOver" and other settings. You may need to set everything back to default to get rid of the black square.
Not sure about the doubled menu items …

  • I have weird pixelly artefacts showing on my screen...

Can anyone tell me what is going on with my iMac?
I have weird pixelly artefacts showing on my screen.
The attached picture shows a particularly bad portion of a screen grab of this, taken in Safari whilst browsing a website.
The lines and blocks flicker like crazy. They're not moving around, and where they appear, they stay flickering in that spot – BUT if I move the browser window, then weirdly the flickering lines and blocks follow along with the window.
If I flip to a different application, then the flickering lines and blocks might move to a different location, or they might disappear altogether, or there might be more of them or there might be less of them. It's all very random.
Also, as you can see, for some reason I have lines appearing over a dark section where there is an image, and I have blocks appearing over a light section where there is no image.
It can be seen in any application, be it Safari, the Finder, Photoshop, anything...
Some days it's a little bit, some days it's a crazy amount. It usually disappears totally after a reboot, but then after restarting, the flickering lines and blocks gradually appear over time.
    Any help appreciated. Thanks.

  • I have tried everything; no toolbar and only a black square. Hours and Hours I have tried all your suggestions.

Last week for the first time in ever having zero problems with Firefox for years all I had was a black screen. I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times, searched for hours for solutions, I feel like I've tried them all to no avail. Almost every troubleshooting tip says to start with the toolbar, I have no toolbar in Firefox any longer, only a clear window where I can see my desktop behind it and a black square. Interestingly enough, from memory of course, it's said something about incompatible XP but I've got Windows 7, never had XP on this computer.
Anyway, I'm using Explorer now and I don't really like it. I've really enjoyed Firefox for years and I miss it intensely. Never had a problem on my other computer, either, but it has XP and I don't use it online any longer.
Please please please don't ask me to try any troubleshooting that involves starting at the toolbar, again, I have no toolbar, literally a black screen and only the minimize and close buttons. That is all. Thank you.
I've currently uninstalled Firefox for about the tenth time so as far as I can tell I would have to reinstall again. Thank you for any help that would help me get my Firefox back.

hello KathyAZ, other users with this problem all had an embedded intel hd3000 graphics card with an old driver present. in case this also applies to you, here would be a link to update the driver, which in turn should also address the black firefox problem: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=23764 (for win7 64 bit)
in case this doesn't solve the issue or does not apply to your system, start firefox into safemode '''by pressing the shift key while the application is launching''' & disable hardware acceleration in the firefox ''menu ≡ > options > advanced > general'' (that setting will take a restart of the browser to take effect).

  • Unibody MBP - black squares glitches in OSX but not in bootcamp.

    Hi
I have a strange graphics problem with my unibody and just wonder if its worth sending in for a repair or if it might be a known software issue:
Usually when web browsing, the mouse pointer will suddenly become unresponsive for a moment.
It will then just react strangely to my mouse movements - like it is over sensitive.
After this i will then see visual artifacts on the screen.
These appear as black square shapes around various windows.
I then regain full control over my mac but the black squares remain.
If i move an open window over one of the black artifacts it clears.
Occasionally it never recovers and i have to do a hard restart of the machine.
I also found that while attempting to play 'runescape' - a java based 3D game running in a web browser (firefox in this instance) that i would get a severe version of the issue stated above ending with my screen flickering - again forcing a hard restart.
Here is my conundrum though - this ONLY happens in OSX
I run windows7 64bit under bootcamp for gaming and can game for hours at a time with not one single crash or glitch which leads me to question wether this is a hardware issue at all.
I have done a FULL clean install of snow leopard which included trashing my user folder and creating one from fresh. (i only retained my documents).
Any advice / familiar stories would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks so much.

At home I've used both a NetGear and Belkin router (both N band), at work we have various networks using Cisco kit.
The encryption types vary depending on which network I'm connecting to.
The WiFi drops on all of them when in OSX but runs flawlessly on all of them when in Windows 7.
I'm currently sat here at home in the living room connected to a Netgear WNR2000 which is in the room directly above me.
Signal strength is full and the encryption is WPA-PSK + WPA2-PSK.
It had been connected for around an hour without disconnecting but then in the last 20 minutes it's disconnected twice; both times refusing to reconnect automatically forcing me to turn the airport off and then back on.
The fact that the same hardware works fine in windows 7 would suggest that this has to be a software issue inside OSX.

  • Black Square on Boot Screen after last update

Hi everybody, I made the last security update of OSX on May 25th, (osx 10.9.3), and iTunes 11.2.2 on June 10th.
I do not use to reboot so much the computer, but I do that every 10 or 20 days. After one of those updates, I got these screen while booting up the computer:
As you can see, there is a black square, with the cursor over it. I can move the cursor and the computer seems to start without problems (actually faster) but showing that square. The other difference is also that now I cannot see the usual spinner under the apple logo.
I do not have any kind of boot camp or other OS installed. I have only changed the HD for an SSD one, but this was at november of last year, and everything has worked without problems until this date.
If anybody can give an idea on how to solve it, or if I am the only one who is havving this issue, please, post it here.
    Thank you very much

  • Black squares in Safari

Every time when I open more then 3 tabs in Safari 8 (8.0.1-8.0.2) I see black square on web page content.

Test with another browser, such as Firefox or Chrome. If it doesn't manifest the problem, you may be triggering a known bug that affects some MacBook Pro models with dual graphics. The only workarounds I know of are to use another browser on the affected sites, or to disable automatic graphics switching if your model supports it. To use the discrete graphics processor, you'll need a third-party utility to switch to it manually.

  • Weird graphic before login screen and laptop is VERY slow

    Hello,
So I have an Early-2011 MacBook Pro 17".  Lately (past 3 months) the computer has been slower (which is normal, it's getting older) but now it is just unbearably slow and for seemingly NO reason.  I have meters on the menu bar that say there is pleny of RAM left and the processor is running at 2%-6%.  I can't figure out for a single reason why this is happening, but it is EXTREMELY frustrating, since only 2.5 years ago I paid 3200$ for this computer.
Now there is a weird graphic that appears RIGHT before the login screen appears.  I have attached a photo.  I currently own an iPhone 5, iPad 4, iMac 20" (2008), MacBook Pro 17" (early 2011), and an iPod Touch 3rd Generation.   I have had problems with almost all the products, but yet have remained a die-hard Apple fan.  I'm beginning to question my affinity to Apple, because I could have purchased a 17" Windows computer for MUCH less and then just replaced it this year.  Instead I thought this piece of junk would last me 6 years.... This is hardly looking like it will be the case, as I can barely do anything on it as of now.
    It's an early-2011 MacBook Pro 17", with a 2.2GHz Intel Core i7 processor, 8GB of 1333MHz DDR3 RAM and a 750GB Western Digital Black hard drive running at 7200RPM.

    justinjsc,
I can’t explain the weird graphic, but I can offer something to try regarding the slowdown. Boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Did this make any difference?
In case the slowdown is due to a problem with your hard drive, do you make regular backups? If not, you might want to consider buying an external drive to use as a Time Machine backup destination.

  • New r7850 black squares across screen

    Hi, my system is:
    Intel Core i5 3570K
    Gigabyte Z77-D3H
    Kingston HyperX KHX1600C9D3K2/8GX 8GB 2X4GB DDR3-1600 XMP

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64BIT
    Corsair TX650 V2 650W
After installing my new graphics card and downloading the driver from the disk that came with it I rebooted my PC and when I got to the windows log in screen the screen was covered with small black square boxes running diagonally. I am unable to get rid of them without disabling my card. I also tried the amd drivers from the website. Any help on this is appreciated. Thanks

Hi thanks again for the response.
Testing this card in another system isnt really a option for me but I tested my old graphic card in the same pci 16x slot on my Gigabyte z77d3h and it worked fine. The card seems to be the problem.
I have also eliminated the possibility of a monitor or cable problem by using the hdmi port on the card instead of the dvi and running it through my 720hd TV. The same black box checkered problem persisted.

  • All of my photos are there in thumbnail, but when i click on to open a big black square appears with an exclemation mark in it!

Now when I got finally upgraded to 7.1.2, I dont see my apps and music anymore. They all seem to disappear. I cant even back up to the older date. All I see is the option to back up to the 7.1.2 version only. The only solace is I still have photos intact. Rest all data seems to be gone. Please help!!! urgent!!!

  • Album art shows up as tiny small black square in iTunes 10.5.1.42

I had quite a bit of music that didn't have any album artwork for so I (painstakingly) spent a few hours to fix it i.e. used MPTagThat to look up artwork and meta tag info online.
But when I went to iTunes, all that artwork ended up as a small black square. I don't get why.
The artwork seems fine in WIndows Explorer. I click on a song, and there it is. The way I picked it. Yet when I go to iTunes, it's that same annoying black square.
Anyone knwo how I can fix this? I have something like 400 songs whose artwork I had to look up. Can anyone tell me how I can fix this without going through each and every song?

itunes gets wrong covers alot but i do not know what to tell you about ipod thing

  • Transfered video's from Casio Exilim appear as black squares in iPhoto 08

Video's appear as black squares within iPhoto instead of first frame. Nevertheless the black squares still have video logo and duration indication and after double click will open and play in Quicktime. However, this is quite inconvenient if you look for specific videos.
    How to fix this?
(I used a Casio Exilim compact camera to shoot these videos)

    Chrisjan:
Are you able to play the videos even though the thumbnail is black? You might try rebuilding the library as follows: launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
