Weird message in Disk Repair - talks about 2 disks & I only have 1

Hi All-
When verifying my disk and permissions I kept getting errors that it couldn't be done and I needed to repair my disk. I finally broke down and slapped in the Mac OS X install disk (panther) and restarted, went into Disk Utility and tried to repair the disk.
When complete, I got a message like this:
Volume "Scrumptious" was repaired
Repair Attempted on 2 Volumes
1 HFS volume was repaired
1 disk could not be repaired
Scrumptious is my Hard Drive's name, btw. So the odd thing is that I only have one disk. Of course the CDRom was in there, too, so I suppose it could have been referring to this, but that seems odd. I'd think Apple smart enough to make a CDRom that would know it was a CDRom and not try to fix itself.
Anyone want to offer any interpretations for me? Clearly the hard drive was not repaired since the permission repair still doesn't work, so is my only resort to fly to the nearest Apple Store and sign up at the Genius Bar?
With gratitude,
Matthew

Since you've installed Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), according to your profile, you should use the Tiger install disk to attempt a repair on your drive.

  • Weird messages when I repair permissions...

I've repaired permissions using a number of utilities including Onyx, Cocktail and DiskWarrior (runtime). All of them take about two hours to repair permissions and then I get a string of messages saying "ACS found, but was not expecting System/Library/User Template/English.lproj/Public"
Or, "ACS found, but was not expecting System/Library/User Template/English.lproj/Pictures"
Or, "ACS found, but was not expecting System/Library/User Template/English.lproj/Music"
Or, "ACS found, but was not expecting System/Library/User Template/English.lproj/Movies"
Or, "ACS found, but was not expecting System/Library/User Template/English.lproj/Library/Voices"
Or, "ACS found, but was not expecting System/Library/User Template/English.lproj/Library/Sounds"
Does anyone have any clue what these mean? They don't seem to be permission files per se, and the program does finish repairing permissions, but I fear that they are affecting the stability of my machine.
    Any help is appreciated

  • Stuck: Need Disk repair but DVD drive dead and only have USB 1

[1 Ghz flat-panel iMac with USB 1 ports (no USB 2) and also Firewire 400]
I noticed a strange discrepancy (small but concerning) between the size of a folder on hard drive (folder of all mp3's with no subfolders) and the backup of the same folder on a mounted thumb drive.
(The size difference was not due to any invisible .DS_Store files and both folders are displayed in List view format.)
    Disk Utility reports three things:
    1. Incorrect number of thread records
    2. Volume Bit Map needs minor repair
    3. Checking volume information.
Volume free block count",0)   [I might have mangled this line]
(It should be 13438611 instead of 13437937)
Here is the GOOD (but these are useless as explained under the "Bad"):
    - I have a Tiger 10.4 boot DVD for a repair ==>but see below
    - I also have a Disk Warrior disk (never used)
    Here is the BAD:
    - My built-in optical drive [Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-105] is -- I now discover - defunct and DEAD - it does not run the Tiger Boot DVD (in pristine shape).
    - I bought an external SuperDrive (unopened) but I believe no boot from USB 1 is possible in PowerPC so a SuperDrive with USB 1 is useless.
    Questions:
1.) Is there any way to boot from some external source (optical drive is DEAD) to run Disk Utility and/or Disk Warrior? -- I see none in this case! (gulp).
2.) More importantly (and this is my fundamental concern): Do the three Disk Utility hard drive issues constitute any direct threat to the integrity of my files?
I have almost everything backed up to duplicate thumb drives over these many months as standard practice.
Are these Disk Utility errors fully isolated to hard drive directory-keeping...or do these directory damage errors pose the possibility of mangling or harming my files or their metadata (filesize, etc.).
Put another way, when files are backed-up from a hard drive under the Disk Utility reports above, do they remain unharmed and undamaged by the situations reported by Disk Utility?
    Thanks,
    Bill

    Jeff and Michael,
Thank you both for your generous and thoughtful input.
Michael: As I slept on it overnight, the exact same idea occurred to me of trying a Target Mode to the iMac from my Lion MacbookPro (I have it but stupidly have yet to use it much!).
I did buy a Firewire 800 (MBP) to Firewire 400 (iMac) adapter cable a few months ago!
CONCERN: Would there be potential compatibility issues or risks in running Lion 10.7's Disk Utility against the hard drive of the old OSX 10.4 iMac in Target Disk Mode?
==> Assuming an "it's ok" answer to the Target Disk question, would the majority of users agree that the Target Disk Mode would be more prudent than running:
fsck -fy   in Single User Mode
I have never done fsck -fy before especially because I was under the impression there were issues with Journaled drived but from what I have read today...it looks ok to do)
Jeff: Can't thank you enough for the reference to the OTW DVD drive. I might first invest $10 in one of those DVD lens cleaner disks that I've read about. It's probably not the issue or else why would the drive read commercial Music cds perfectly well!
    Thanks,
    Bilil

  • What is iMovie talking about with this error message?

I have an iMovie 4 project that has been output to iDVD successfully some time ago from my G4 (Tiger 10.4.8). I recently copied it onto my iBook (600MHz - 10.4.8). When I try to insert an extra Title before a new footage clip I get the message - "You can't run this application from a read only disk." So I press OK and then I get "Error in system operation (-5000).
What is it talking about ?
    Any advice much appreciated!
    Thanks
    Arnie

If you have two versions of the project available — one on the DVD and one on the hard disk — make absolutely sure you are opening the one on the hard disk. If iMovie is opening the last-opened project, it may be opening the project on the DVD.

  • Talking about disk reliability...

This topic seems to come up with some regularity, what are reliable disk drives and which seem to cause problems?
I can't answer that question ( I'm a mere end-user, not a repair shop owner), but I can share what I have experienced in many years of video editing with many kinds of different disks.
Seagate SCSI 10K 36 GB disks. I once bought a 5 disk enclosure with these disks and within one year 2 disks died. Got them exchanged under warranty, but again the next one failed (no longer under warranty) and then the next one. I finally decided to get rid on all of them, they were not reliable. Era: 1995- 1998.
Samsung F1 1 TB disks. Have 16 of them and  only one failed in three years time, exchanged under warranty. Era: 2008-now.
Seagate 7200.11 1.5 TB disks in a NAS. Had 7 of them and within three years 12 failed, first 5 of them, replaced under warranty, then the next 5 not under warranty, then the next 2 failed. An utter disaster.
Hitachi 5K series 1 TB, Had 6 of them and 2 failed under warranty. No problems since.
Maxtor 500 GB (don't remember the model). Had 4 of them and two died of old age after 4 years. Era: long ago.
Seagate Constellation ES 1 TB. Have 25 of them and no problems yet. Eras: 2012-now.
I have used an occasional WD drive, but they died usually within 2 years, but then we are talking about the last century, so it is no longer relevant now.
This does not give hard evidence about what to buy, but if people can weigh in with their experiences, it may lead to some conclusions of what is reliable and what is not.

About 5 years ago I had two Western Digital 250Gig drives fail in a "short" time... I think one in the 1st month and the second within 3 months
Looking at the dates and locations on the drives (I had bought both at the same time) they were made in the same week at the same location
WD replaced both drives (which ran fine, I later sold that computer when I built a new one) and never did tell me "exactly" what happened... but based on my reading of the drive labels, I "presumed" that the plant had a box of bad components
I have never had any more problems with WD drives

  • After getting the dreaded gray/blue screen, I tried to run disk repair on the internal disk. I got an error message saying "Disk Utility can't repair this disk and restore your backed-up files. The volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely

After getting the dreaded gray/blue screen, I tried to run disk repair on the internal disk. I got an error message saying "Disk Utility can't repair this disk and restore your backed-up files. The volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely." What do I do now? This is an iMac and I'm running 10.6.8.

    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it. See below for how to clone a drive.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
You may be able to backup your data if you have an erased external drive you can use. Before you do the above but after you have opened Disk Utility you can try to clone your drive:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Now this will only work if the drive is accessible and can be cloned by Disk Utility. Otherwise, you would need to access your drive from another Mac that you can connect via Firewire - Target Disk Mode.

  • Can I fix a disk with this message?-Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.

Can I fix a disk with this message?
Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.

Some problems can indeed be fixed this way. But working from Recovery_HD or Disk Warrior DVDs and working in the restricted environment those provide can be difficult. You can literally spend days working on this problem (while your regular work is unavailable) only to discover the old drive is unsalvageable.
There is no way to know up front whether you are facing a major Hardware failure or a minor software glitch, or something in between. Often you are forced to work from the drive you no longer trust. I continue to recommend you do this work from a different, fully functioning Mac OS X booted from a different drive.
If you have had the foresight to (as The hatter often recommends) clone your virgin install onto another drive for use in such situations, you will be able to recover from such problems in record time. If not, my previous recommendations stands:
Buy a new Drive. Or  two. Install Mac OS X from scratch on a new drive, and get your Mac running again. Later, you can use the full power of Mac OS X to attempt to rescue your data, if needed. Then Zero the old drive, to see if it can hold data again reliably.
If the old drive eventually provides some needed data, and is salvageable, Merry Christmas.

  • Hi, I can't figure out why I can't render on my timeline. I highlight the segment hit "Apple-R" and it gives me a weird message about "conforming HDV video...." and the bar goes as far as 60-66% and holds there forever. It never renders even partially.

Yes, I know. I have been working with HDV for some time. I am wondering why it doesn't render when it needs to.. the red and bright-green lines are above, and I've set the render settings such that ANYTHING I highlight and hit apple-R will render. But its not rendering at all.

  • Error message-the volume unkown is about to run out of disk space.

When I try to log and transfer any of my video clips from my camera it doesn't work, because in the middle of the transfer it comes up with a message saying volume unknown is about to run out of disk space, please clear some space and hit continue...This shouldn't be, because I have more than enough room on my mac. So I'm wondering what, if anything do I need to delete. And what else I have to do so I can get back to successfully transfering my clips. Thanks alot!

Are you capturing to the internal boot/system drive of your computer?
Also, how much remaining free space do you have on the drive you have set as the media or scratch disc?

Hi, I got my ipod last christmas and this is the first time I've experienced a problem with it. Whenever I try and sync my ipod, a few songs will sync and then it will stop, and a message saying "The iPod "My iPod" canot be synced. The required disc cannot be found". I've updated the newest version, and when I try and restore it, another weird message comes up saying something like "an unknown error occurred" I've read through the user manuals and I've tried a few different things but nothing seems to work. Can anyone help?

  • Warning messages in Disk Utility

When running Verify or Repair Disk Permissions there are several Warning messages I receive. Examples are: Warning: SUID file "sbin/unmount" has been modified and will not be repaired; Warning: SUID file "bin/rcp" has been modified and will not be repaired; Warning: SUID file "usr/bin/quota" has been modified and will not be repaired. There are 3 or 4 others but I think you get the idea. Are these anything I should be concerned about. The reason I have run this utility is because I have had several issues with my MacBook Pro crashing and having to force shut down.
