Weird pixelated squares in Safari & on screensaver

Hey there,
I just bought the new Macbook Pro about 2 months ago and it's fabulous... Up until a few days ago when I started noticing when I open Safari and it goes to the Home Page (where all your fave websites are listed) some of them were really distorted and pixelated with large squares, then when you click to open a page, the same distortion pops up for a few seconds then fixes itself.
I then noticed today it's doing the same thing on my screensaver (my screensaver is an album of pictures in collage format) and when I attempted to take a screen shot of how Safari looks it just uploaded as a black screen on photobucket.
I have NO IDEA what is going on, I've turned it off and on again and I checked Firefox to see if the same thing happened (it didn't) but then I realised it's happening with my screen saver too, so it can't be the internet server.
Help please
[EDIT]: Just noticed the 3 screen shots I took of Safari and Google have changed since I last opened them in Preview, now they all look the same - I checked other images I'd saved and they were fine, then opened the Safari screen shot and it had parts of the other pictures, then closed and re-opened it and now they all match... WHAT IS GOING ON?!?!

No worries - It was a problem in Safari. I've swapped over to Firefox and no problems at all: Screen saver is fine and so is page loading

  • Weird green squares on screen

I have been having a graphics issue with my 15" MBP many months after having bought it. Upon closing my laptop and letting it sleep for hours while I sleep, I always find it having these weird large square boxes all over the screen and sometimes it freezes my screen entirely.
    Picture here: http://i.imgur.com/wCMmRgE.jpg
My first instinct was to assume it was a software related problem.
    Reasons for assuming this:
The error is usally remedied by restarting my computer.
Sleeping in safe mode gives me no error.
When the screen freezes, the on-screen mouse pointer is still responsive.
The distorted, colored squares can remain in place and are not a result of dead pixels on the laptop screen. (Note the picture here: When the screen shot is placed infront of the squares, it covers them up http://i.imgur.com/ydsRY4s.jpg)
I have done PRAM resets and it usually fixes the problem for sometime. However, I have come to conclude that it is simply the restarting of the computer that fixes this problem. It can sometimes go away for weeks or months at a time and then re-inflame. Unfortunately, I have misplaced my OS boot disk so I am unable to currently try install my OS on a different partition to see if it is solely software related.
I have also read of a user who had a similar problem and they said they had to get their graphics card replaced. However, when they received the new graphics card it magically had the same problem. This would be highly coincidental (although not impossible), which makes me lean more to it being a software related problem.
Has anyone else experienced a problem like this?

Open up a 2nd account to see if the issue appears there.

  • Pixelated square at start up!!!

I am having trouble with start up. Upon start up, chimes work, apple appears, then it turns to a pixelated square in the center of the screen. I have tried all suggestions. PRram reset, power management reset, squeezing the computer...nothing seems to work. This computer was given to a friend of mine, who turned to me for help. He did not have the original disk1 only disk 2. He did not know the password, which was a problem. It was working but, the clock was set wrong. So, I took my OSX disk ( 10.3) and it would NOT restart using that disk as a boot. So, I did the T start up and used my powerbook to do it. I successfully ( 2x) installed Panther, but, it will not start up. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. We really need of this ibook to work in order to help run our new opera company. Thanks, Thomas

    Thomaz,
Actually, we did not erase and format. We simply installed over the old system.
So there's no telling what is on that hard drive. Even if it won't boot, if you're in target mode you can erase the hard drive using disk utility.
This Because the computer would not start up on the OSX bootable Disk1.... I could not understand why it would not boot up on the Panther DISK 1.
Is that a retail version of OS 10.3.2? Black with silver lettering?
If it's a machine specific installer, gray with white lettering, it's only meant for your PowerBook.
Target mode could work but it would need to be the retail or correct installer for the particular iBook in question or very close to it.

  • When I move from window to window my screen has weird pixels

    Hello,
Sometimes when I move from window to window there are appeared weird pixels on the screen.
It seems that the image is not processed fast enough.
    Any advices?

hello, have you set any other dpi value in your operating system than the default one (96dpi)? more information about that is available at http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/display_use_large_or_small_fonts.mspx

  • T420i Graphics Card issue (weird pixels on screen)

    I have a brand new T420i with Nvidia NVS4200M, i7 2670 QM, 8GB RAM, 128 SSD ( operating system and softwares) and a 500GB 7200RPM HDD. Also using Win7 64bit.
I use a View Sonic 2270VX IPS external monitor at 1080p resolution, with a displayport to HDMI cable.
The problem I have is, when browsing the web, using photoshop and Rhino ( CAD ), I get these weird colored pixels.
    Link to image 1
    Link to image 2
When I am only using a VGA cable, this doesn't happen. This doesn't happen on my laptop screen as well.
I updated my Nvidia driver to the latest on Lenovo's website ( version: 9.18.13.1100).
At first I was told that it could be the cable, but since I can make a screen cap of it, it shouldn't be just the cable or monitor. What else can I do to resolve this? It gets annoying because I do a lot of graphic related work.

Thanks Jin. I will have to try this and use it for a while to see which one is it. The weird pixels don't come out all the time. I will use one setting for a few days first to see how it performs. Right now, I am running on discrete card. At first the pixels came back but they are gone now, so I am not certain yet. Thanks again, I will come back with updates.

  • Weird downsampling, pixelated, images in Safari & Firefox

Since applying the latest update (to Snow Leopard), images on websites look highly pixelated (often background images). After applying the recent update to iPhone - it does the same thing! Perhaps something in the latest webkit release? My wife's iPhone and Mac (without the latest updates) has no issues. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Yes, I see the big ugly squares. They are what appears whenever extremely heavy JPEG compression is applied to a low-resolution image tht has relatively large areas of similar colors. Something somewhere is applying such compression to the pages, or portions of them, that you are viewing in your browser(s). Your MBP is not doing that: it can't. Either the page images (or parts of them) are being compressed by the website owners or, if every web page is affected, they are being compressed by your ISP in the process of being transmitted to you, as Gordito suggests. That would greatly increase the speed of page loading, but at the expense of image quality. You wouldn't see the image degradation on an iPhone or cell phone — the screen is too small — but on the MBP's high-resolution display it would be much more apparent, IF the MBP were receiving the signal in the same highly compressed form as the phone. If the MBP receives the same web pages through an ISP that doesn't over-compress them, they'll look the way they ought to look. So if you are receiving these web pages through a cellular ISP rather than through a broadband connection, take the MBP to a wifi hotspot and connect through wifi instead. I bet things will look different then.
Compressing images is something a web browser can't do: a browser just displays the signal that comes to it.

  • Pixelated images in safari, please help.

    Hi everyone,
Hoping someone can help me with a issue i have with my new macbook pro.
When browsing the net, safari and firefox show really pixelated images. I thought it might be my internet connection compressing data or something, but i have tried other computers on the same internet connection and the images show perfect...
So this makes me think its the macbook. I have upgraded snow leopard from 10.6 to 10.6.2 and updated safari, but unfortunately this didnt help my problem. So now i have ended up here, asking you people, coz im out of ideas.
I will include some screen shots so you can see exactly what i mean.
Notice the bad quality images and even on google's banner it is pixelated heaps...
Please help if you can. Its very annoying. Cheers.

  • Distorted video on youtube & colored pixels/ squares appearing

My problem is when viewing videos on Youtube using safari or firefox I keep getting small colored squares moving across the video whilst its playing and also sometimes the video becomes distorted in places. This happend a few weeks back and then stopped then this week the same thing began happening. I don't think it's anything to do with youtube as I asked around and no-one else had the problem. I tested watching video on other sites and the same thing happend with the colored squares moving within the video frame.
Also in recent days I was using flickr and on some photos I viewed there was a section of the photo with a large colored block covering it. I could view the image, but there was a section covered in yellow or green. I refreshed the photo and it was gone. There were also thin strips of distorted image on some photos like the pixels were missing. It seems to be a problem with images and video. I hope my explaination was fairly clear. I might include a photo if not.
I have searched the discussion boards and nothing comes up. I also watched a DVD yesterday and view quicktime videos and images on my computer and nothing happend with them, its seems its just when viewing images/ video online with safari that it happens.
    Any clues?
    Thanks in advance.

Further to my earlier post I have done some more digging and noticed that xlr8yourmac.com also had a couple of reports on this.

Today I got the same pink lines but that was after my Mac Pro had been on half the day. I definitely believe that it is a heat issue with the Radeon X1900 XT card. I managed to take several screen grabs of the pink/green artifacts, so that is definitive proof that it is not a monitor or monitor cable issue.
I did clean what dust there was from the X1900 XT cooling fan yesterday, so even dust free I still got a problem. When the artifacts appeared I wasn't actually doing anything very strenuous on my Mac other than run DEVONagent, which may have increased the CPU load, but not the load on the graphics card.
There is mention of it possibly being related to the 10.4.9 upgrade, but I did not see the problem until I upgraded to 10.4.10.
I have now reinstalled Mac OS X and upgraded to 10.4.8 to see whether the problem resurfaces in the next few days. If it does, then I'll be onto Apple for a new card as my Mac Pro is only 4 months old.

  • Weird Javascript problem on Safari and other web browsers

    Hello,
this is actually pretty weird. For the past several weeks I have been dealing with a very strange problem which I believe relates to JavaScript. To be more specific I have an issue with two websites: Macuser.gr and Facebook.com.
As far as Macuser.gr is concerned this is how it's supposed to look:
    http://f.cl.ly/items/0j1J123Y2D0t1C2U3b1f/Screen%20Shot%202013-02-06%20at%202.25 .04%20PM.jpg
and this is how Safari renders it:
    http://f.cl.ly/items/3N0V3I1c0Q0a1r0K0e1C/Screen%20Shot%202013-02-06%20at%202.25 .40%20PM.jpg
The problem is with the preview images as you can see.
Now, in Facebook there's this annoying white line where it isn't supposed to be:
    http://f.cl.ly/items/0k0i2c0T0q1h3t2j2s3e/Screen%20Shot%202013-02-06%20at%202.25 .52%20PM.jpg
I have tried and tested everything (Guest user, different browsers etc) and all it comes down to is JavaScript. Disabling Javascript seems to fix everything immediately. Enabling it again and this mess occurs. Also, this happens with the latest versions of Safari, Chrome and Firefox BUT not with Camino 2.1.2 although it has JavaScript enabled in it.
This is really frustrating and it appeared out of the blue one day. I did not have this problem from day 1. Any ideas?

Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.
From the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. While in Recovery, you'll have no access to your saved bookmarks or passwords, so make a note of those before you begin, if they're needed for the test.
Test. After testing, reboot as usual and post the results.

  • Weird Sound coming from safari?

Help me, I have a 2010 13" macbook pro with os x mountain lion,  and sometimes when I have safari open, a weird chicken squawking, bongo drum sound comes on. This sound happens on any website, not just one particular website. It is scaring me and I think I might have a virus, can anyone help me? I've had it for about 3 months now :/ It just happens out of the blue and to stop it, I have to close the window I am on, on safari! I am very very worried as I love my macbook to bits <3
    thanks in advance xx

Please read this whole message before doing anything. This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it. Step 1 The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.” While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin. Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem? After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it. *Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing. Step 2 The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Weird "double" effect in Safari

Im running Leopard 10.5.2, have all the current updates, to date. And just recently i've been getting this weird bug in Safari with all pages.
When viewing a page, esp one with lots of text and verticle scrolling, all the text seems to jumble together and create a doubling effect, almost tripling in some cases. ill post a few screenshots of what I'm experiencing, but hopefully there's a fix for this, reading my daily blogs is becoming a big hassle.
    thanks in adv
on a side note, this does not happen at all using the most current version of firefox...

    Try this, it can't hurt.
    1) Quit all open applications.
    2) Delete your fonts caches with FontNuke or OnyX +(or with whatever utility you normally use)+
    FontNuke <http://www.jamapi.com/pr/fn/>
    OnyX <http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs/english.html>
    3) Restart your Mac
    4) Open your Font Book->Edit menu 'Select All' fonts - from the File menu select 'Validate Fonts'
from the Edit menu select 'Resolve Duplicates'
    Good luck,
    Tom

  • Black squares in Safari

Every time when I open more then 3 tabs in Safari 8 (8.0.1-8.0.2) I see black square on web page content.

Test with another browser, such as Firefox or Chrome. If it doesn't manifest the problem, you may be triggering a known bug that affects some MacBook Pro models with dual graphics. The only workarounds I know of are to use another browser on the affected sites, or to disable automatic graphics switching if your model supports it. To use the discrete graphics processor, you'll need a third-party utility to switch to it manually.

  • White square in safari

Intermittently I get a small white square (maybe 1/8th to 1/16th inch wide) in the upper third of the display. I close/restart Safari and it goes away. Google this, searched on the forum and didn't find anything, so thought I would post to see if anyone else experiences this artifact.  Running all the latest software (Yosemite and Safari)

Would you post a screen shot so people can see what you are seeing? Make sure you cover any personal information using Preview. Post the screen shot in a Reply using the camera icon or you can drag the screen shot into a reply. Copy and paste doesn't work.
