Welcome home 24" iMac!

Well, I am finally the proud new owner of a new 24" iMac 3.06GHz! Swapped out the two 1GB GB RAM sticks for two 2GB for a total of 4GB. Watched a DVD movie to make sure the drive works. Ran perfect.
Ran PiXel Check and found one dead pixel in the black color. Not noticeable at any other time unless the whole screen is dark or black and you are looking for it. Should not be too much of an issue. I have heard you used to be able to try and attempt to 'massage' these things out with some success. Anyone ever try? Looks like I would have to remove the glass pane to get to it and not sure I want to even try.
Everything else is great. I now understand the posts about the screen brightness being very bright even at its lowest setting. Installed Shades and all is good!
Ran all software updates and brought over all my files from my old machine. Just need to install all my design apps.
Here is a link to a few photos, nothing different or special but I know most like to see photos of these beauties.
http://idzynegraphics.com/Personal/iMac/
The 24" screen is HUGE! I come into work today to my 23" Apple Cinema Display and it seems small to me now!
I will also say for me personally, the built in speaker quality is above average. Nothing to wow you, but more than I expected from a desktop computer. Took my cheapy external speakers to work to use with my MB Pro as they really don't do much more than the iMac speakers.
Overall, very happy and satisfied with this machine after having spent an evening with it.

I'm glad you're happy with yours... congratulations. You got one that works, but keep your fingers crossed. Apple doesn't seem to want to address some SERIOUS issues. You have no idea what I'm going through (conveniently for Apple, after warranty expiration) with my lemon. I have owned dozens of Macs, and this is by far, the most unreliable, flaky, crash-prone, frustrating piece of equipment I have ever purchased. I have to place a large fan about 12 inches from the computer to prevent it from overheating. If the ambient room temperature gets over 22-23 degrees Celcius, the crashes are far more frequent... sometimes about 30 minutes apart - if I'm lucky enough to be able to work that long. I can't count how many preference and database files have been corrupted by these sudden shutdowns. Often, it takes many attempts (or a long wait) before I can reboot. I can barely see what I'm writing now, because there's a grey line through most of the text. I've emailed Apple, but received no response - no surprise there. I send many crash reports a day too. They need to concentrate on developing a reliable, stable platform before they waste so much of their time and my money on pretty, shiny boxes. I'm disgusted. I posted (just a few) examples of what I see all day, every day, at: http://gallery.me.com/jjmcharg/100009
So - enjoy it while it's new. Who knows how much longer you'll be able to use it. Apple probably knows. I can't afford to fix mine-if it can be fixed.

    If your network configuration is:
Cable modem > (Ethernet cable) > [WAN] AEBS > (wireless) > Macs, then
AirPort Extreme Base Station Setup (AEBS) w/High-Speed Cable Modem
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling
    - Power-off the Cable modem, AEBS, & computer(s). (If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
    - Power-on the Cable modem; Wait at least 30 minutes.
    - Power-on the AEBS; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    - Power-on the computer(s)
Perform a "hard" reset of the AEBS.
    - (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107451)
    Setup the AEBS
With the network components powered down, set up the AEBS, using the AirPort Admin Utility, connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the LAN port of the AEBS, and then, try these settings:
    AirPort tab
    - Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
    - AirPort Network Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
    - Create a closed network (unchecked)
    - Wireless Security: Not enabled
    - Channel: Automatic
    - Mode: 802.11b/g Compatible
    Internet tab
    - Connect Using: Ethernet
    - Configure: Using DHCP
    - WAN Ethernet Port: Automatic
    Network tab
    - Distribute IP addresses (checked)
    - Share a single IP address (using DHCP & NAT) (enabled)
Once you verified that you can get Internet access for all of your computers, you should secure your wireless network. To do so, I suggest that you make these changes:
    AirPort tab (optional)
    - Create a closed network (checked)
    Change Wireless Security
    - Wireless Security: WPA Personal
Base Station Options - WAN Ethernet Port
    - Enable SNMP Access (unchecked)
    - Enable Remote Configuration (unchecked)
    - Enable Remote Printer Access (unchecked)
    Wireless Options
    - Transmitter Power: 10%
    Access Control tab (optional)
    - + <add the computer(s) that will access this wireless network>

  • Can i have two apple tv on the same home sharing imac

I have apple tv in the living roon which i stream movies from imac via home sharing. Can i use another apple tv on the home sharing, use them both at the same time without any problems.

Winston, what sort of set up do you have for 10 apple tvs? - I currently have 2 and cannot stream different movies successfully at the same time to both of them from a single macbook pro. I am looking at upgrading to a system with a macbook mini or server streaming different content to 3-5 apple tvs. Currently all streaming is on the same channel and via 2 airport extremes and a new express. Still finding the system very very slow.

  • Network Home Folders - iMac Freezes

Hello all. I am trying to implement GarageBand for editing at a radio station. Everything is based off of a XServe G5 running OSX 10.4.11 with only 2 iMac workstations running 10.5.3. Only one main user right now who has a network based home folder. Everything works great except when on occasion he will try some sort of menial operation(empty trash, move files around) and he gets the "pinwheel of death". There is no reviving from the pinwheel. I am forced to do a hard shut down from the button and restart.
The XServe is an ODM with DNS running correctly. It is also running Samba for some windows machines that run our automation system.
Any thoughts on why this iMac is freezing up? Im really not doing much with the XServe at all.

  • Accessing my home-based iMac through the internet?

The Goal: Wake up a sleeping Intel-iMac, running Tiger 10.4.11 with a MacBook laptop running Leopard 10.5.4. And then, using the MacBook, I want to gain access to all the files in the iMac and be able to read/write/copy the files on to the MacBook.
The Catch: I need to do this, remotely, outside my airport express LAN network, through an internet connection miles away from the iMac.
    My Current Set Up:
Home Base- the iMac, running Tiger, is connected to the internet via ethernet running through a D-Link 5 port ethernet router. The iMac is running OS 10.4.11. The home base internet provider is Time Warner Cable with a dynamic IP address that changes daily. I pay about $35 a month for this internet cable service. To get a permanent IP address would make me a commercial account that would cost me $95 per month.
Remote Base- the MacBook, running Leopard, is connected to the internet via a Belkin wireless router. The internet provider is AT&T DSL
    The Settings on the iMac:
I have a password for both the iMac and a different password for the airport connection.
In the iMac System Preferences/Sharing I have Personal File Sharing on.
    Remote Login on.
    Firewall is On.
    Internet Sharing is off.
Under the Network Settings on the iMac, the location is Automatic. Under the Network Port Configurations: Bluetooth, Built-in Ethernet, Built-in Firewire and Airport are all checked and active.
The MacBook has a WakeupLan application installed.
What settings do I need to change in order to reach my goal?
Do I need to download any other software such as a VNC client?
Which VNC client should I use?
Is the VNC client difficult to use?
I know there are services such as gotomypc.com but they only work for PC computers and those computers need to be on and awake in order to access them. Plus those services cost about $180 a year.
I’m looking for something much cheaper but still simple to use.
Any detailed help would be appreciated.
    Thanks, Panther

    The answer is possibly.
On the Mac you want to wake, make sure that you have Wake-on-LAN enabled (network preferences), and record the hardware (MAC) address of the machine. You will need that later.
Next, you need to enable remote login on your Mac. This actually turns on SSH. By default, this means that you can login to it, via terminal, using 'ssh' and your username and password. While SSH is pretty secure, using a username and password based login is still not very good. You should read the SSH documentation or look for tutorials on the Net on how to create an encryption key and switch SSH to using only key-based log-ins. Guessing a 2Kb encryption key is not going to be practical for most people.
You will also want to go to dyndns.org and register your computer and download a dyndns client (unless your router has that built-in -- many do). DynDNS.org offers a service whereby your computer or router can automatically update it's IP address in DNS. You will need to register a domain name, but from the standpoint of most applications, it will be as if you get a static IP address (the DNS entry will change whenever you are assigned a new IP).
After you've done that, you need to setup your router to forward a UDP port (7 or 9) from the outside to the broadcast address of your LAN. The broadcast address is the IP address of your machine, with the last number replaced with 255. For example, if your iMac has IP address 192.168.1.100, the broadcast address is 192.168.1.255.
    Once you've got that going...
On the Macbook you need to install one of the various Wake-on-LAN applications (there are a number of them for OS X - pick one that let's you send the wake signal across the Internet). Configure the Wake-on-LAN program to use the IP address of your router, the port you selected above, and the machine address of your Mac. You can test it now by sleeping your Mac and trying to wake it up. Keep in mind, some routers and switches simply drop WoL packets. If this is the case, you're just out of luck.
On the iMac, make sure that you enable screen-sharing (sharing preferences), which enables OS X-built-in VNC server.
On the Macbook, install Chicken of the VNC or another VNC client.
To connect, first, use the Wake-on-LAN utility to send the wake-up request to the sleeping computer. Wait a few seconds for it to wake, then attempt to connect via SSH. You will want to forward VNC through your SSH connection like so (in Terminal):
    *ssh -C -L 5900:localhost:5900 [email protected]*
... when you are logged in, start the VNC client, and connect to 'localhost'. Because you've forwarded the VNC port to the remote machine, it will go though SSH and connect to VNC on the remote machine.
The practical upshot is that you will have a highly secure login to your remote computer on-demand.

  • Home sharing iMac and MacBook Pro: not all songs are playable

    Hello
I set up Home Sharing between my iMac and MacBook Pro so that I could stream the music that's on the iMac to the MacBook Pro. On the MBP there are no songs, all of them are in Apple Lossless format on my iMac. I first tried to use "‘share my library on my local network" but because I wanted the play count to go up as well I chose for "Home Sharing". Setting up was simple. After all preferences were adjusted, I opened iTunes on the MBP and it immediately found the shared iMac library. There's now only one problem: not all songs are playable. Some don't even start. How is this possible and what do I need to do to resolve this?
FYI: the iMac is connected via ethernet to my cable modem which sends a wireless Wi-Fi signal to the MBP. Signal quality is excellent.
Also, is it possible that playcount is only available with Home Sharing and not with "share my library on my local network"?
    Thanks!

It very well could be the antivirus app, most are intrusive and debilitate rather than enhance performance and should be removed using the developers instructions. You haven't really told us anything useful such as any settting you may have changed. However if you began working backwards resetting any changes and uninstalling the apps added since the performance issue started then you probably will find your issue.

  • Windows 7 hangs at welcome screen on iMac

I have installed windows 7 on my iMac using bootcamp. The windows installation went smoothly. after installing the bootcamp drivers the windows started freezing on the welcome screen.
I did dome research online and figured out the problem, its the bootcamp which starts up o the Windows load. Please help me how to over come this issue.

you can start with getting the graphic driver from the vendor, there is trouble with using Intel 3000 and seems like the Mini have more trouble than others - they all have some trouble - and uninstall Apple gpu drivers - with Driver Sweeper 3.2+ (not older) and CCleaner (clean Registry).
You should be using Lion Boot Camp Assistant and BC 4.01+ drivers with any 2011 model (or later) too.

  • Itunes home sharing/ imac lion/ pc laptop / ipodnano

Long story.  ipod nano originally formatted to imac OS lion machine.  I had all of my library /playlists/ everything on the ipodnano and the imac.  The imac is constantly being used by kids/hubbie so I wanted to do my itunes through my pc laptop.  Plugged the ipodnano into my pc laptop and find out it has to be re-formatted to work on pc.  Go ahead and re-format and everything is erased as it warned me it would be.  I set up homesharing on pc and on imac--I can see my imac library on the pc now.  I CANNOT for the life of me figure out how to transfer the homesharing itunes library to the ipodnano now from the pc.  I have tried all kinds of syncing--automatic, manual.  I have tried ""selecting all" , using the checked boxes feature, everything.
    please help.
ps i have also purchased imatch in the past if this will help (I found this to be a waste of $$ as it did not solve any compatiblility issues in the past)

ugh.  Finally got an interface loaded that looked like old itunes--view--menubar.  Then when I tried to drag and drop songs from library to ipodnano, it popped up that I needed to download songs from the cloud first.
sheesh---nice way to lose 2.5 hours of time trying to figure this out.  Thanks Apple for all of the hidden menus.  ugh.

imac is running lion...macbook is couple years old.

It appears you have a iPad Mini and a MacBook. Assuming that, this

  • Home sharing with IMac and applet  not working

Sharing is turned on my IMac.  My Apple TV is on and can see the name of the IMac. The iMac has photos selected but they don,t display on the Tv.   I have verified the IMac has most recent version of ITunes. Been through TS guide, no luck. Apple TV says to turn home sharing on but it is already on. Any suggestions.

I have 2 Apple TV 2s.  I updated one to the latest iOS and it immediately lost the connection to my home shared iMac.  A week later I updated the second ATV2 and it immediately lost the connection, BUT I regained the connection with the first ATV2 I had updated earlier.  The second still won't connect even after exhausting EVERY solution numerous times and the setting on both ATV2s are identical.  Hoping the next iOS ATV update solves the problem.

  • How can I get my Appleworks/Clarisworks Docs into my iMac Duo

I just came home from the Apple store with a brand new iMac Duo 2 Core machine. I was told at the store that any of my stuff in Classic mode is history and can't be used on the new iMac but I know that someone out there has figured a way to get Clarisworks/Apleworks documents in a new Intel Mac and are at this moment working with their docs. Please let me know how you did it.
    Thanks Chris.
iMac Duo 2 Core   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Welcome to the iMac Intel forum.
I would ask the question in the Appleworks forum.
However, if your old Mac runs OS X, get Appleworks 6.2.9 and save all your files in the OS X version. Then install 6.2.9 on the Intel and transfer the files.

  • Best way to "transfer" Aperture images from MacBook Pro to iMac?

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro 15" to import and edit images (within Aperture and CS6 as an external editor) when I'm out in the field shooting.
I prefer to have all my images in one location and thus desire to copy eveything to my home base iMac when I return home.
What is the best way to "transfer" those images so that my homebase iMac Aperture Library can recognize the new masters and edited versions?  Complicating this is the desire to "stamp" each image with a metadata preset upon import that I can do either at the laptop import or upon transfer to the iMac.
I know just enough to be dangerous but clearly there is an optimal way to consolidate and manage images when using two computers.
Welcome any thoughts from fellow photographers!
    Chris

Thanks Kirby.  I utilize Aperture 3 by reference instead of a compiled library.  So I have individual folder/projects stored on my laptop.  By exporting as a library, does Aperture bring these folders and related images "with it"?
What I don't want to lose is any post processing I do in the field which creates separate versions and/or .PSD files.
    Thanks for your continued assistance.

I'm looking at my network monitor and something is constantly downloading from the internet. Bills are through the roof and I can't figure out what the blazes it is. There is no way to isolate which process is guilty of this wanton abuse of my connection. Any suggestions? Anyone else out there had the same problem before?

Hey, thanks a lot. I've tried Little Snitch to no obvious avail, I wasn't able to deduce what exactly it was that was going on. In any case, while I try WaterRoof out and call my ISP, here's the log that Terminal spat out when I followed your instructions:
