Wep password for ibook G4

I have a G4 and had to change the password on my Linksys router, I am trying to change the wep password and I know I am entering the correct password. But if my memory is correct, when I initially set up the wep password, I had to enter a single number or symbol BEFORE the password. Has anyone done this? If so,what is that "missing" character?

I believe it's the $ symbol that you need.
On a related note, if at all possible, at least use WPA encryption as any WEP password is very easily cracked, which puts your network--and any information you're sending out--at risk.

Maybe. What kind of other computer are you talking about? What operating system is it running? What kind of wireless router are you using?
Your best bet may be to just reset the router and set it up again.
Just so you know, WEP is a very old security system for wireless and is considered insecure. If you have it available, use WPA2.

  • WEP password for Windows machine

    Hi to all,
Okay, got two refurbed airport express units from apple yesterday. I set them up in WDS mode and both my iMac and ibook are connected and working well. My wife tries to connect to the wireless network and it asks for the WEP password. I enter the password that I set up for the connection but this does not work. It is prompting me for a much larger password. Where can I find this password?
    Thanks!
    Greg

    Glenn900, et al,
Thanks for your prompt response, but unfortunately I am not following these instructions very well. I am using WDS, which means that I have two basestation choices within the Airport Admin utility. One is the basestation, the other is the relay basestation. Which one do I double click? Assuming I click on the basestation, I get a large window that comes up with different categories:
Airport, internet, network, port mapping, access control, WDS, music. I do not see any lock icons in any of these sections. However, in looking into the button entitled "airport" there are several buttons that seem to be relevant: change password, base station options, change wireless security and wireless options. When I look at "change wireless security" I do get a window that addresses wireless security and has a box for the WEP passwords. This password is not shown however all I have is ••••••••••••••••••••••••••• I am thinking that I need to have that 128bit WEP password revealed to me so that I can input it into my wife's windows machine. How do I get that password?

  • Where can I find the WEP password for my older airport extreme?

I have a log-in password for my home network, but my HP printer wants a "WEP Password."  I don't know where to find that.  Any ideas?

It's a brand new printer, just out of the box.  It should connect via wireless, but it doesn't recognize the network security password.  The router is an old Airport Extreme, the kind that looks like a big white chocolate chip.  I tried through the airport utility to check on its security settings, but the dialog box said this version of airport utility didn't support the router and to download airport utility 5.6.  I did that, but it wouldn't let me do anything, not even update to 5.7, which it recommended, because it didn't recognize the password.  The password works to access the network from other devices, though.
I suppose the next thing to try is to reset the router completely, but I hesitate to do that because I am not sure it will let me back into my network after I do that.  Since it only recognizes its password sometimes.

  • Forgot password for ibook author?

after finishing my book I decided to put a password now I can't get in it. locked out
please help if you can.. Michele

Try disabling the computer's antivirus and firewall.
    - Next try the manual install method of:
iDevice Troubleshooting 101 :: iPhone, iPad, iPod touch
Place the iPod in recovery mode after the firmware download is complete and then restore using the instructions in the article. Sometimes recovery mode timeouts and returns to disabled before the firmware download is complete.
    - Then try on another computer

  • WEP password won't work on only one Mac

I have my network set up, with router etc. I have what I assume is a WEP password. My main box is a G5. Another box is a MacBook unibody. They both detect my network in the Airport list. If I have to enter my WEP password, it works fine.
Today I just started up my G4 867 running 10.4. It has an Airport card in it that has worked fine in the past. I haven't used the computer for over a year, but it starts up fine, everything looks normal. When I go to my network list in Airport, I see my network. At first it asked for a "WPA Personal" password, but I've never had to use it. It didn't work. Then I switched to "other . . ." and was able to choose "WEP Password" for my network. I get an error message saying "There was an error connecting to the network "xxxx""
I KNOW that the password is correct -- it works on both my other machines. But I still get the error message. I tried the various "WEP" options, and even LEAP, whatever that is. No matter what option I select, it will not accept the password.
I even tried rebooting in OS 9 (I can do that!!) but there, also, I got the same error.
I KNOW I'm not mistyping the password . . . what the heck is going on here?
Thanks in advance. This is extremely frustrating.

Golly gosh gosh . . . this was so long ago I have no idea what ended up happening. But these days if something like that happened to me I'd just junk the router and buy a new, more modern one. And have someone who knows what they're doing come in and set it up. And make sure every single thing he does is documented and that all passwords etc. are immediately stored in a safe and always accessible place.
I know it's frustrating NOW and you want answers NOW, but sometimes there is just voodoo in the air and no amount of brainstorming settles it.
I know you know all the standard procedures -- reboot everything, unplug, replug, dump preference files -- but in the end, just throw away the router and get a new one. In this disposable culture we have that's almost always the best and easiest solution.
My wife has been bedevilled by an "Update Flash" problem on the computer that used to be mine but that I gave to her, and of course, it's those little kids at Adobe being spiteful at their old mentors and not supporting Flash on Power PCs any more, thus the non-functionality -- but thankfully this time I found a hack somewhere that immediately solved her problem. She was blown away, but ultimately it's going to be a lot worse on anyone still running a Power PC. Just give it all up and ditch the PPC and buy an Intel machine -- problem gone. The old days of trying to brainsttorm through a seemingly intractable problem are long, long gone. Ditch the offender and start all over again with a new offender.
Let me (us) know what happened. I wish I could help you but I must have solved it somehow or given up on it -- I simply can't remember.

  • Where do I put in the WEP password?

I used another computer to change the WEP password for my wireless network.
My Mac no longer connects. I have searched the menus to find out out how to put in the new WEP but all I find is info about an "Airport" which I am sure I do not have. My wireless modem is a Netopia and it works fine with all PCs except the MAC.

Open Network in *System Preferences*. Choose Airport ,this is your wireless component on the MacBook, Where it says *By default, join:* choose *Preferred Networks*. A window will open in the network page now click the plus sign. A separate window will pop up. Put the *Network Name:* in. Then for *Wireless Security:* choose *WEP Password* then click OK.
I always pick the *Show AirPort status in the menu bar* this gives any easy access point for airport and shows a signal strength indicator when on.

  • Network diagnostics asks for password for wireless network with no security

    hi
I am trying to connect my Mac Pro to a wireless network which has no security settings. Other Macs in the house connect to the network with no problem, but the Mac Pro doesn't. I am setting up a new network as I have moved house. In the previous house the wireless worked fine on the Mac Pro.
When I click on the Airport Icon in the menu bar, the search wheel shows and it finds the network, but when I click on the name of the network typically it doesn't connect. Occasionally it does connect, and I briefly have internet access, but then the number of bars on the Airport Icon gradually reduce and then I can't connect again.
When I run Network Diagnostics from Safari, it finds the network also, but then typically asks for a WEP password for the Wireless Network when I haven't added any security to the network (occasionally it doesn't ask for a password and I can connect briefly)
I have tried resetting my Time Capsule and creating a new wireless network with a different name, but still experience the same issues.
I wonder if someone has any ideas as to what might be going on, and how I might be able to troubleshoot this.
    Thanks
    Nick

It is one of mine. Yes. It connects to it no problem, just doesn't connect to the actual internet. Network diagnostics has all green lights until the ISP and/or Internet point. If I walk through diagnostics, it will get to the point where it says that the network requires a WEP password. I don't know why it does that because my network is not password-protected (husband claims it doesn't work well with his VPN system to get into work network). If I leave it blank, the connection will work. Eventually, after the computer is put to sleep, I will have the same problem upon waking up. I just tried renaming the network and removing all preferred networks and rebooting. Let's see how that works.

  • Can't connect to a WEP password protected connection on XP Pro SP3 on MB

    Hi all
I've been trying to connect WiFi to my G5 tower with my MacBook in Windows XP Pro via Bootcamp
and when I don't have any password set on my "internet Sharing" prefs, I can connect fine BUT the moment I put a password (either 40 or 128 bits) I just can't connect on my XP why is this? Every thing is up to date on XP and have SP3. When I try this on the Mac OS X side on my MacBook with or without a password it works without any problems. So what can I do to log into a password WEP connection on the XP side??
    Thanks!!!!

I am having a similar problem. I can connect with my MacBook 13" thru airport using a name it always recognizes and is my own. When I try to connect with the iMac on my desk thru the same thing, it asks for a WEP password. I probably set it up myself, but have no need w/my lap top, but in the same house it wants a WEP password for my desk top(iMac), and I have no clue what it is.
One 10 meg cable connection to Linksys modem and then to Linksys Wireless-G BB router. Shouldn't I be able to get access w/o plugging the router into the desktop ???
Sorry for posting this in the wrong place, but I am not sure how to put it anywhere else .
    maulwoof

  • WEP Password and airport

My ISP recently advised all customers to change their WEP passwords for connecting to their wireless broadband. I did this and have been having the following problem.
Every time my screensaver comes on, the computer goes to standby or is shut down, when I wake it up/re start, i cant connect to the internet. The signal strength is full, and the network name is listed as connected, but web pages etc wont load so clearly my mac isn't connected. This never happened with the old password, as soon as the mac was active, the internet connection was live.
My work around, which while working is an annoyance, is to choose 'other' on the airport button on the top panel, then select my network (the same one that is ticked on the drop down window) and either put in my new wep password again, or, type in anything at random and hit connect. with wep it connects again, with random a window pops up saying cant connect try again or ok. If i hit ok, then click my network name again in the drop down panel from the signal strength button, it connects fine without my new WEP being inputted again.
I've tried deleting any reference to my network and internet in my key chain but the problem persists.
Its a bad and complicated explanation I know, but id appreciate any suggestions anyone has:)

Actually it's a great description, I've seen it many times, generally what you've done fixes it.
Try one or both these commands in Terminal next time...
sudo ipconfig set en1 BOOTP;sudo ipconfig set en1 DHCP
    sudo ifconfig en1 down;sudo ifconfig en1 up
    Also try Logging out/back in.
Try making a new user to test.

  • Need to set up password for airport express with belkin pre-N router

I can't figure out how to set up a WEP password for my wireless network at home. I tried setting it up using the AirPort Admin Utility, but no base station appeared on the menu. I'm using a Belkin Pre-N router. Any recommendations out there?

The AirPort Admin Utility is ONLY for use with Apple's base stations.
You will need to follow the directions in the Belkin's User Guide about using a web browser to change the configuration of the router and enable wireless encryption. If all of your equipment supports WPA, use WPA (with a non-dictionary password) instead of WEP.

  • Setting up a password for Airport access

I am trying to set up a WEP password for the computer that our kids use to limit their internet access. What I want Airport to do is to require a password EVERY time the computer wakes up or is turned on. I can set up the password, but once its entered one time, it is remembered by the kid's computer and there is no need to re-enter it again. How can I require a password each time Airport is accessed?

This is not possible without changing the password every time.
The easiest solution is to unplug the internet connection from the Airport base station and plug it in as and when they need internet access.
You may want to consider getting the new Airport Extreme.
    http://www.apple.com/airportextreme/security.html
A useful new access control feature lets you decide not only who accesses your network but also when they can access it. If you’ve got kids with their own computers, for example, you can control the times they’re allowed to access the network. They can have accounts that are available only at certain hours of the day — for example, when you can be home to keep an eye on them.

  • Ibook does not remember WEP password

    Hello,
My ibook has an airport card, and I have a netgear
base station, (not an airport base station).
I am set up successfully for 128 bit WEP encryption
The only problem is that whenever I restart the ibook
and try to reconnect, I have to enter the 26 character
    WEP key by hand.
I tried deleting the "system" keychain and re connecting
+ re-entering the WEP password as described in the
discussion topic "Saving WEP Password in Keychain "
but it doesn't seem to help
Can anyone suggest a way to get my WEP key stored in the
keychain so that I don't have to enter it by hand when
    I connect ?
    thanks, regards, Bob Parkes

    Hello John,
thanks for your reply, and sorry for the delayed response:
Yes, I have tried keychain first aid: Here's what happened:
    1) When I started keychain access, one keychain was shown. It was called
    "login"
    2) I used "window->keychain list" to show all the keychains: the "configure
keychain list" window popped up: "show" button was set to "user"
    and the "login" keychain appeared.
When I used the "user" button to switch to "Mac Os (system)" keychains,
the "system" keychain appeared, and its location was "/library/Keychains"
    3) I used "windows->keychain first aid" , the "keychain first aid" window
    popped up, I selected "verify"
I got the following message :
    Verification started
Checking keychain configuration for Judith McKie (user ID=501)
    Home directory is /Users/judithmckie
    Checked login keychain
    Checked password for ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain
    Checked settings for ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain
    Checked default keychain
    Checked contents of ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain
    No problems found
    Verification completed
FYI, Judith McKie the person who I am trying to correct the problem for
I notice that the "login" keychain is mentioned, but there is no mention of the "system" keychain in the message above from the "verify" step .
What do you think I should do next ?
thanks for your help, regards, Bob Parkes
