What address book does iPhone sync up to?

When I get an iPhone and plug it in to my PowerBook, which address book does it automatically hook up to? Entourage or address book?
Thanks!

Claire W.,
When you get the iPhone it uses SyncServices to get the data.
If Entourage is syncing with SyncServices, your data is already in Address Book already. Entourage 11.3.5 or later is required. If you have Entourage as part of Office 2004, then you can update to 11.3.5 using the Microsoft Updater that came with Office.
Other system requirements to consider are USB 2.0, and Mac OS X 10.4.10 or later.
Hope this helps,
Nathan C.

  • Address Book does not sync with "Truth"

    Hey all.
I've been experiencing this problem for some time now. I'm syncing between Address Book, Entourage 2008 and my cellphone via iSync. Recently however, it seems that my Address Book does not sync with the "Truth" anymore. For instance, when I make changes to a contact within my cellphone, after using iSync, the changes appear in Entourage 2008, but not in Address Book. Likewise, if I import a contact's vCard into Address Book, it does not show up in Entourage 2008 or iSync back to my cellphone.
I've tried resetting Sync History through both the button in iSync's preferences as well as terminal. That did not work. Neither did repairing permissions.
    Could someone help me please?
    Thank you!

If you have developper tools installed, maybe you can take a look a Syncrospector, located in /Developer/Applications/Utilities/
You should see AddressBook in clients list, with last sync data and registered entities (data types).
You can also check if /System/Library/Frameworks/AddressBook.framework/Resources/AddressBookSync.app is present on your disk.

  • Address book and iPhone sync... two issues

    Hi,
I have two problems. The first is that every time I add, edit or delete contacts on my iPhone, the changes are never reflected on my computer no matter how many times I sync. This has not always been the case but I am unsure how long this has been going on as it is not easily noticed due to the fact that I have over 1500 contacts.
I decided to bite the bullet and allow my address book on the computer to wipe my iPhone contacts. When I did I ended up with 1513 cards on my address book and only 1510 cards on my iPhone!
How is this possible? Is anyone else suffering from the fact that the iPhone does not update the computers address book?

The most plausible explanation is that you have 3 contacts on your computer that have corrupted data and could not be transferred. In addition, ANY corrupted records on the computer prevent a normal sync from happening.
You need to find the bad records. One way to do this is to create a new group in Address Book, and put some of the contacts in this group. Then sync the group to the iPhone. If it works, continue adding more until it stops syncing. You then know the set with the bad data. One neat trick is called "binary search". Add half you contacts to the group. If it works, the problem is in the other half, so swap the halves. If it doesn't work, move half of the contacts OUT of the group and try again. Follow this process, halving each time to keep bad contacts in the group until you have located them.

  • Address Book does not sync to computer

When I try to sync my iPhone with my computer, Contacts entries are not being transferred to my Mac's Address Book.  They are, however, going from Address book to the iPhone  I don't understand why.  Here is my set up:
    Computer: OS X 10.6.8
    iTunes: 10.6.1
Settings in iTunes:  Synch all contacts is on.  Everything else contact related is off.  Back up to computer is on.  Back up to iCloud is off.
    Thanks!

I understand what's going on, but this may be happening because there is something corrupt with one or more contacts on your phone.  Replacing them may allow two-way syncing to work again.  If your phone contacts are the ones that are correct you could replace your mac Address Book contacts with these by using the free app My Contacts Backup on your phone.  This will back up your contacts as an attachment to an email.  You send this email to yourself, open it on your mac and double-click the attachment to import them to your mac Address Book.  You would first need to remove your contacts from your mac Address Book.  To do this, open Address Book on you mac and back them up as a precation (File>Export>Address Book Archive), then select all your contacts and delete them.  Once Address Book is empty you can use the email attachment to import your iPhone contacts.
Now you can try replacing your iPhone contacts with your mac Address Book contacts to see if this resolves your syncing problem.

  • Address book to google sync  does not work

I use Google apps as my primary calendar and address book. I have them synced to the Mac OS X ical and address book (to use off line). I have the Mac OS X ical and address book synced to mobile me to update other computers and my iphone.
The net result is everything matches the Google apps calendar and address book.
    Well, not so fast.
The calendar does work as expected.
In the Mac OS X address book, the Google sync option does not sync (you can enter in your user name and password fine, it appears to make connection fine, but it does not sync). The mobile me does sync as expected.
It is simple, there is not a lot you can do wrong, it just does not work.
As a work around, I am using Googles over the air sync to iPhone which does work, but that means the mac address book is getting skipped.
When does the checked Synchronize with Google happen in address book? When you open address book? Why does the option only appear if you have an iPhone? How do I get the address book to google sync to work?
    Any ideas?
    thanks
    bob

Mine actually performs the sync, but after a few rounds of syncing, some contacts get deleted, some get their photos removed, some get duplicated, and some get removed from groups. The sync basically puts my address book through a blender. I'm syncing both with MobileMe and Google. Well, that is I tried to. I've decided not to sync with Google since that's what seems to initiate the mess.

  • ICal and Address Book no longer syncing with iPhone - HELP!

    HELP!
I am a long time Apple user and rely heavily on my iPhone to keep me where I need to be, when I need to be there. I have an iPhone 4 and it is running OS 6.0.1. Everything was working fabulously until recently. Sadly I don't know when the problems started--when I updated to OS 6 OR when I updated iTunes to version 11. Either way, my iCal and Address Book no longer sync with my iPhone. And to add insult to injury, my phone is no longer automatically detecting the AT&T microcell I have in my house. I have to reboot my phone every time I come back in the house--talk about annoying.
I am not super techy, so I am hoping someone can help me with this. I LIVE by my iPhone and as a self-employed person, I can't afford for this device to stop giving me information. I also don't want to do entries on my phone AND computer everytime something changes. I do not want to go back to the more reliable paper calendar and address book.
I have iCloud turned on, and it appears to sync my address book with my iPhone. But I seem to be a mess with iCal and my desktop. And between iCal/Adress Book on my computer and iPhone, nothing is talking.
    HELP!!!!

I think my company updated Exchange on Friday and since then I cannot sync with Mac Mail, Entourage does not seem to be working either?
    Any fix found

  • Lost all my contacts in Mac address book.  Tried syncing my iPhone/iPad contacts to Mac is not working.  Please help

Lost all my contacts in Mac address book.  Tried syncing my iPhone/iPad contacts to Mac via iTunes and is not working.  Please help

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Unless you have the contacts backed up somewhere, you won't be able to restore them.
You and your son should have your own iCloud accounts then you can keep your own contacts and calendars etc and avoid deleting each others.

Why can't I get my iphone to import all the email address  when it imports from address book?   It syncs all other info.
I tried over and over, there must be something I need to change.
It make we want to go back to my blackberry

Usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.
    To restore from backup see:

  • How to sync Address book with iphone(iOS 6) and 10.7.4?

How to sync Address book with iphone(iOS 6) and 10.7.4

i'm having this issue too.  it's a bit more complex though i think so i'll give the details:
a few days ago i added some people to my contacts using my phone. the thing they have in common is they're all new contacts.
they synced over to my macbook address book ok.
then a few days later i had to do a full restore of my iphone for various reasons (the new one, already!) which i did. when i then looked in my iphone contacts, these contacts were no longer there. they WERE however, still in my macbook address book.
so i figured i'd switch icloud syncing off for contacts and then resync to get them back on my phone. it didn't work. so i then turned off icloud sync and tried a good old manual sync via itunes, making sure to check the box for syncing contacts.  it still didn't work.
now i'm at that odd place where the contacts are in my macbook address book but not in my phone and i can't seem to get them onto my phone (which is frustrating as ultimately they are phone numbers and in my phone is the best place for them!)
    any ideas?

  • How to sync Address book with iphone on 10.5, while iphone synced with iCloud?

My mac runs leopard 10.5.8. Meanwhile iPhone is updated to 5.1. and synced with iCloud. As we know, OS X 10.5 can not be synced with iCloud. How to sync Address book with iphone? My Address Book on my mac has almost all contacts that can be found on my iPhone. Even with pictures from FB and extra info such as twitter accounts, etc.
The question is - how can I manage my contacts? Now I have added several new entries to my iPhone, but they won't appear on mac's address book. In iTunes the contacts sync box is unchecked due to the fact that iPhone syncs with iCloud. But then I'm wondering where did Address Book get all the contact updates that were made on iPhone?
I'd like to control this whole thing. And is there such thing as one data base, that could used by all devices and would change entries on all of them, if I change or add something on my iPhone?
Or I just have to get Lion and let the iCloud do the magic?
    Thanks,
    Lauris

I just synced my new iPhone (iOS 5.0.1) with the Address Book on my Mac which runs 10.5.8 and iTunes 10.5.2. I launched iTunes and then I connected the iPhone to the Mac. It appeared on the DEVICES list in the left column in iTunes. I selected it and then the Summary screen appeared in the right part of the iTunes window.
In the Backup section of the Summary you can choose whether to 'Back up to iCloud' or 'Back up to this computer'. Even if you have 'Back up to iCloud' selected, there is a 'Sync' button in the bottom right hand corner of the iTUnes window where you can manually initiate a sync with the Mac.
    Hope this helps,
    Dave

You should have signed in with that address in the first place, but there is a workaround: go to System preferences>Mail, Contacts@ Calendars and add your @me.com address as an account there.

  • Address Book doesn't sync UP to iCloud, but syncs back down..

(Sorry, Winston, and maybe Roger, I must be developing Alzheimer's ..I just cannot understand how this iCloud system works..)
I've searched through hundreds of queries and answers, but cannot find a similar problem ..but maybe I simply haven't looked hard enough.
Question on behalf of my good lady ..and I've been tearing my hair out over this for WEEKS..
She has 3502 contacts in her Address Book on her OS X Lion 10.7.4 MacBook Air. She has two iPhones. They're both running iOS 5.1.1. She has enabled iCloud on ALL these three devices, using her @me.com identity and appropriate password.
She updates Address Book contacts ONLY on her MBA - for sync'ing to her phones - and she does NOT update any Contacts info on her phones in order to have them transferred BACK to her Mac. That's how she prefers to work.
The only way that her Address Book contacts will sync UP to iCloud from the Mac appears to be to select 'All on My Mac' within Address Book, and to Export as vcards to a file on her Mac, and then, in the online iCloud Contacts webpage, to Import that file of vcards. All well and good, but that seems to ignore all her various Groups; everything ends up bundled all into one group. (Perhaps each Group in her Mac's Address Book needs to be separately Exported and then Imported, but surely it shouldn't be as long-winded as that.)
(About 402 of these contacts are not accepted by the online iCloud Contacts, although they seem to fall within the requirements of not being too many, not being too large, etc. But that's a separate problem which I'm still investigating ..maybe the names are formatted incorrectly; I'll keep working on that separately..)
Anyhow: by explicitly Importing all those Address Book contacts into the iCloud Contacts, they then immediately start to get distributed - correctly! - to her iPhones ..but also back into the Address Book on her Mac, thereby DUPLICATING them all in Address Book! (They CAN be seen as SINGLE entries by choosing 'All iCloud'.)
I cannot understand the opaque instructions in all of the iCloud documentation. NONE of the documentation which I've studiously read (online, in System Prefs, in every Help file I can find) seems to indicate a DIRECTION for this iCloud sync'ing.
WHERE - if there is such a place - does one specify that contacts should go only UP FROM the Mac, and not BACK DOWN to the Mac?
There seem to be options only to turn ON sync'ing (or off), but not the DIRECTION of sync'ing, or which device(s) take precedence. (..In iTunes - when sync'ing phones to a Mac with a cable - there's a preference to over-write EITHER the host Mac with data FROM a phone, or to over-write an iPhone's data with data FROM the Mac..)
    So I'm asking..
    (a) Can one specify a DIRECTION when turning on sync'ing for a device?
    (b) With iCloud sync'ing turned ON on a Mac, is there any known reason why Address Book contacts should not send themselves UP to the iCould, instead of having to be manually Imported?
    (c) Does one Export Groups individually? ..But what if a name is in more than one Group ..does it get duplicated online in iCloud?
    (d) Is there not the intelligence within the iCloud facility for the system to NOT distribute back, or duplicate, contacts to the device which is the SOURCE of those contacts? Should it not do a comparison between iCloud and a device, and then recognise that those contacts already exist on the remote device, and therefore NOT distribute them BACK again to the SOURCE? (..Or am I having too high expectations?..)
Many thanks in anticipation, and I'm so sorry to be such a nuisance if this has already been answered a zillion times before.
(Yes, Winston; she has almost as many iPhones as you have AppleTVs!)
    All best wishes,
    David.

David, nice to hear from you again, hope you are well.
This user tip might help you understand how accounts work with Address Book.
I believe you have duplicates because you have two sets of contacts. "iCloud" and "On My Mac". Once you have created all your contacts in the iCloud account, you should delete them from On My Mac.
You can move contacts simply by dragging and dropping from one account to the other, you don't need to export them all to the desktop (although doind so will serve as a good back up if all goes wrong). You should note that this copies them though rather than simply move them, so you'll need to delete the old set when you are done.
As for preserving groups from the On My Mac Account, you can't but you can simplify recreating them by copying contacts (drag and drop) from an on my mac group to an empty group in iCloud.
Not sure about the contacts that you are struggling to move.
Many aspects of iCloud are difficult to understand, have a mull through what I've said so far and come back if everything still doesn't fall into place.
