What are all the hard drive icons on my desktop from app installations?
Most of the apps I have installed leave a new hard drive icon on my desktop, like these. Obviously the Macintosh HD is an good one to keep, but the others just keep accumulating and I find that to be a problem.
What are these?
What purpose do they serve?
Can I delete them?
If no delete, can I hide them?

Click anywhere on your desktop so that Finder is displayed up on the menu bar. Next open Finder Preferences... select the General tab and check the Hard disks box.

What happened to the Hard Drive icon?
Just booted a brand new MacBook Pro and went thru the initial set-up, but there is no "Hard Drive" or "Macintosh HD" folder on the desktop anymore. Do I now need to click on the Finder every time I want into the hard drive?
Oh, yeah, Mountain Lion is so terribly shy of letting you see all its privates...
While you're munging up Finder's desktop Preferences, may also want to visit the Sidebar tab and set up what you want to see in there as well. -
I had my most frequently used documents in Documents folder in the Dock. I thought I'd just drag it to the external hard drive, which I did, but then it was gone from the dock and I haven't had any luck putting it back. Somehow the applications folder has also disappeared! Can someone please tell me explicitly how to get documents and application folders back on the dock.
Thank you - I had tried to do this but it didn't work. What I finally found that worked was that on the desktop I right clicked and then selected "new folder". I named it documents (then did the same for applications) and dragged those folders from the desktop to the dock, and am in the process of dragging the documents and applicatons from their original folders into the new ones - it seems to be working fine.
I have no idea why it didn't work as you suggested - I tried several times with no luck, I even took a few unused icons off the dock in case there was not enough room.
So hopefully one of our solutions will help someone else. Thanks again. -

I Just bought a Mac Mini yesterday and its pretty cool and everything. But 2 things have left me scratching my Head. I cant see my hard drive image on the desktop nor on the finder! So I can´t access a lot of stull I transfered from my other computer.
Another thing is that When I transfered my users from my older computer (by old I mean a G5 Power PC) I saw the users but I couldnt find any data that belonged to any of them. I found Out after a very frustrating 2 and a half hour migration process. Any pointers?eyedr wrote:

Second user can't see hard drive icons on her desktop
I added my wife also as an administator, but she can't see the hard drive icons on her desktop. Not even the Macintosh HD icon. Hard drives are connected thru USB.

What happens when the external icon jumps on top on the hard drive icon on the desktop?
The external drive icon jumped to the hard drive icon on the desktop and after that happen the iMAC started running slow. Not sure how that happen or what is happening to the iMAC after it happen. All my applications are running and launching slow. Also, when I tried moving files to the external drive I'll get a "error code -36". When I looked up the error message it says that the file is corrupted even though I could still open them. How can I fix this problem and not lose any files? Thanks for any help.
RRFS has probably got the answer basically - but the combined contents of the two drives has probably maxed out the drive space on Macintosh HD, meaning the OS can't use virtual memory properly.
Open a Finder window and read the available space at the bottom.
If you have copied the drive, it should show as a folder under Macintosh HD in the Finder.
I hesitate to tell you to delete the whole folder as that may be too much for Finder to cope with. Open the folder and delete files and folders in small chunks, emptying the trash each time before doing the next..
Meanwhile, if you go to the Finder preferences and uncheck the item for Hard Disks in the desktop list, then move the icon for the external away from that corner before re-enabling the Hard disk option.
You may need to go to View options from the right-click menu on desktop and set 'arrange by' to 'none' in order to get the icon to stay where you want it. -

Click on the Desktop. From the Finder menu select Preferences. Check the boxes for what you want on your Desktop. If they are already checked, then try unchecking and rechecking.

I wish to recycle a number of macs. What happens to the hard drive when sent to Simms? Do I need to dismount them?
Hard drives don't die then come back to life. Your drive never died. You just thought it did.
Obviously, if a hard drive isn't on and spinning its life is longer than when it is always on and spinning. If a hard drive in a laptop is idle it goes to sleep. That's normal because it prolongs battery life. Of course it hardly matters if the computer is running on AC power. The drive may still go to sleep but there's no impact on the battery.
If the computer is in use 24/7 then its useful life will be less than if it's in use only 12/7 or 8/7. This is both logical and obvious. But in the long run all computers or their hard drives fail. There is little you can do to prevent that. They are meant to be used. If your life is dependent on the computer being usable, then buy another one as a spare. Or at the very least buy a backup drive, keep the computer backed up, then you can worry less about drive failure. -

How can I add the hard drive icon to the menu bar on a MBPr? I have downloaded Google Earth and it wants me to drag it to the hard drive for install. I was able to display the icon but now I would like to put it on the menu bar. Is this possible? Or can I add it to the hardware section under system preferences?

ThanksIt's on your Desktop, is it not? You cannot put it on the menubar through OS X although you may find third-party utilities that will. If you want it on the Desktop:
Select Preferences from the Finder's Finder menu and check the desired boxes:
Click on the Sidebar icon in the toolbar to set what you want displayed in the Sidebar. -
after running mac tuneup got a red dot on the hard drive icon, nothing would respond, now on restart cant get past white screen with apple logo, mac tune up disk still in laptop
Restart your MBP holding the trackpad down and hopefully the disk will be ejected. Then try to return it and get a refund or put it in the trash. There is nothing that software does for your MBP that you cannot do yourself or with free software.
If can get your MBP started, delete all traces of the offending software. Worst case is that you may have to erase the HDD and reload the OS and your user data. I trust that you have a backup (minus MacTuneUp).
