What are the best archiving methods for small colleges?

Hi Folks,
Im thinking a few terabyte hard drives will be my best option for a hundred dollars each.
We have a small operation here at a New England college with two editing systems that get a good amount of student use and use by myself for college needs. Some of the student work will get deleted at the end of each semester, but I need to save all the college's video.
What are the best ways to archive? Some of my concerns are cost and space. I can afford a few externals, do any of you have a nice cheap solution?
I understand if I am to go the route of archiving on externals I should have a backup of my backup, do any of you guys have any feedback on ghosting your backups, is that common?
thanks
Mike

If it's JUST for backup (not operation), you can get bare drives and either an enclosure for 1 or 2 drives with no tools trays (like the ones from Sansdigital: about $120 for a 1 drive enclosure) or a device like the UltraDock from Wiebetech (I use the latter). Physically install (or connect in the case of Ultradock) a bare SATA II 3.5" drive, connect it via USB 2, Firewire, esata, initialize/erase it, and then copy your files.
Then store the drive carefully in the foil anti-static bag it came in a dry location where it won't get jostled about by errant students (or kids in my house).
The savings in not getting full drive enclosures in the cost of multiple power supplies and interfaces. You pay for that once with the mountable enclosure / drivedock, and thereafter, just buy bare drives.
I also like another reply: have the students provide drives on which to back up their projects. A friend of mine has a ProTools audio studio, and part of his "set up" charge, is $100 for a bare drive that he will archive for 5 years, or the client can take with him at the end of the project (when the bill is paid).

  • What are the best export settings for a HD video in Premier Pro CS4?

    Hi!
I've been having so much trouble with this issue and it's something that continually frustrates my boss. I have a HD video the settings for it are
    FPS 23.98
    1920 x 1080, then a few lines down it says 1408 x 792
    16 bit,
    2 channels
    48000 Hz
What should the settings be when I make a new sequence?
When I look at it in the window in Premiere Pro I have to contantly 'shrink' the image to fit the window, is that something I should be doing or does it indicate the sequence settings are incorrect?
But more importantly what should the export settings be? I exported a 4 minute long video and the size was 1 GB, I know that's too big.
I need to export it without loosing any quality and export another one that meets the Youtube and Vimeo limits on size.
Vimeo is 500 MB per week, sometimes I upload 4 videos per week. I think Youtube you can only upload 500 MB at a time.
I need to get smaller sizes with loosing the least amount of quality possible AND the best export settings for quality, so I guess I have 3 separate questions-
What are the best sequence settings for HD video?
What are the best export settings for HD without loosing any quality?
What are the best export settings for the size to come out around 500 MB with loosing the least amount of quality possible?
    Thank You!
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/713070
On the above thread I used the 5th anwer, and it's going to take about 7 hours to export a 4 minute video :/

    It Stands for "Coder Decoder."
Your format is like a container for your video file. Certain containers can hold certain codecs and not others. Other containers can hold other codecs. Sometimes different containers can hold the same codecs.
This might be a bad analogy but I'll give it a try.
A coffe cup (container) can hold pretty much any liquid you drink, where a red solo cup (container) won't hold scolding water. So, the coffe cup would be your container of choice most likely because it has the most options for liquids (codecs). But, you might want a red solo cup for just a single crappy beer at a party (a moderate quality streaming video on the web). In that case, you don't need all the optoins of another container.
In Premiere Pro CC H.264 is a Container and the Codec in one option. This has been streamlined for web distrobution of video to be played in browsers without things like Flash or special players.
Were as if you choose the QuickTime Container there are over 40 codec optoins (at least on my machine with additinal ones installed) but you may run into an issue where your browser doesn't support QuickTime playback.
I would say that your container is for compatability with players and your codec is taken into consideration when looking at the quality of the compression.
Yesteraday I wrote a blog entery on Exporting from Premiere Pro and found that the MPEG-4 codec inside of the QuickTime container gave me much richer colors than the H.264 container/codec option.
I posted the link before but here it is:

  • What are the best AirPlay speakers for Apple devices?

What are the best AirPlay speakers for Apple devices? I would like to get some good speakers to be used with my iPod, iPhone and iPad. Ideally, they should be able to play using AirPlay and be quite powerful, but with a good design if possible.
I am particularly interested in the Fidelio range of speakers by Philips.
Thank you for your help in advance.

Best is going to be a matter of opinion.  What environment are the speakers going to be used in? How large is the room? What type of music are you going to play? What features/functions would you like in the speakers? What price range are you looking for?  All of these are going to effect which speakers will best fit your needs.

  • What are the best import settings for iTunes - AAC 160 / AAC 192 / MP3??

Hi I originally imported all my treasured CDs to iTunes several years ago, and they've served me well (AAC 128 - default setting) but in recent times hard-drive sizes have trebled and my much loved iTunes Library has not been updated.
    I am thinking of re-importing all of my original CDs - as I think now that hard-drive space would allow for a higher quality but at the same time I do not want to fill my hard-drive completely with music - hence my question;
WHAT ARE THE BEST IMPORT SETTINGS CONSIDERING SIZE AND QUALITY?
(I know this has probably been asked a million times, but I did a search and nothing came up that answered my Q - also all the answers that came up in Google search where dated 2003/ 2004 - a little out-dated me thinks!!)
    Rachael

Personally I've started ripping everything Apple Lossless. That way I hope I never have to rip again.
I used to rip 320 mp3. I couldn't tell the difference between 320 mp3 and lossless, but, one day I might be able to - big maybe. But since disk price is not likely to go up, I figured I'd rip lossless from now on "just in case."
Probably few, if any, people could tell the difference between 256 AAC and lossless (I've done it at 192, but never at 256, and I have not bothered trying again recently - there might be a song out there where I could hear the difference, hence ripping lossless from now on - my time costs more than disk space . . .)
256 AAC is a pretty safe bet, unless you need mp3 compatibility, then use 256 (or 320) mp3.

  • CS3 - What Are the Best Export Settings for Animation?

I have edited a project in Premiere Pro CS3. It is animated, and I want to preserve as much of the quality of the animation as I can.
What are the best possible settings that I can use to export the video to a .MOV file?
A little background info, in case it helps:
The animations were created in After Effects, and the .MOV files were made with the Animation codec.
After editing in Premiere, I exported the finished file to the Animation codec. It looks so-so.
Important: I imported the Premiere Project into After Effects, and exported the project with After Effects. The After Effects Quicktime file looks better than the Premiere version of the Quicktime file. (And has a higher data rate, in case that matters.)
What kind of settings do I need to select in Premiere when I export the video to make the .MOV file look as good as it can?
(And please don't be afraid to dumb it down.)
    Thx!

Try an Uncompressed "QT" file.  (Component YUV - 10-bit)
BTW: Did your PPRO Settings match the AEFX Comp you exported from?

  • What are the best optimization settings for Logic 9....

    Hey guys,
I am running Logic 9 on a Macbook Pro 2.53GHz, Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, OSX 10.6.4, with a AK1 soundcard. And I was wondering what the best optimization settings for this setup are?
I have been having a few issues with drop outs in sound during playback, which is also carried over when i bounce the audio. I did some research and found my latency settings needed to be higher, so I set the I/O buffer size to 512. I am also running all samples from the local hdd, I was thinking maybe put the samples on an external drive. I also changed Logic 9 to 64bit mode.
Does anyone know if this is right and anything else I need to do with Logic and/or the AK1??

First, return to 32-bit mode. 64 bit still has some ß-issues and some features that are not working/disabled, and the only perk of 64-bit is that Logic can adress more than 4 GB RAM, which you don't have anyway.
Samples on the startup drive is not a problem, unless you start using really big third party sample libraries, or zillions of EXS instruments. Some of the Logic content insists on residing on the startup disk anyway, better leave that where it is.
If you have an external, use that to store your Logic projects, or, in other words, make it your recording disk (as recordings are stored in the project folder). You do record audio too, I assume? Anyway, if you get an external, make it a FireWire one, not USB. FireWire is much easier on the CPU, and +for audio (and sample-) streaming+ more reliable and faster than USB.
If dropouts you hear during playback also show up in the (offline?) bounce, it is probably not a buffer issue, as the buffer is irrelevant for bouncing offline.
So how many tracks and what kind of tracks in this project? Which plugins and how many instances of them?

  • [Blackberry 8100] What are the best pic sizes for the blackberry?

Hi, I am the proud owner of a new blackberry 8100 and I have a few questions.
When I upload an image of 600x450 pixels to the media card, They display well, but when using the Zoom feature, the image starts to get blurry.  Now with a 600x450pixel image, I think the size would be large enough to get a closer zoom without the blurriness effect, but i'm a new user so I'm not really sure if I need a larger pixel image, or if I'm over-estimating the blackberry's Zoom feature and thinking it's a Zoom feature like Adobe's Photoshop. So what's the best recommendation for image sizes to be uploaded to the blackberry?
Also one more question regarding the desktop Manager. I have Version 4.6.0.12  and when trying to access the Media Manger, the "Start" button is faded out, so I cannot access it.  Why is this option not available when the blackberry is plugged in as a Mass Storage device?

The 8100 screen is 240x260 pixels.  Zooming in on the pic doesn't ever do the pic justice.
Are you sure that Media Manager is installed?  Some installs of Desktop Manager don't include Media Manager.  If it's indeed installed, does it work if you turn off mass storage mode?
    1. Please thank those who help you by clicking the "Like" button at the bottom of the post that helped you.
    2. If your issue has been solved, please resolve it by marking the post "Solution?" which solved it for you!

  • What are the best essential apps for a newbie?? Please help...

I'm new to Mac and in dire need of apps so that I can utilize my Mac for more than the very basic. Other than regular updates, I haven't put anything on it yet. I want to be able to do the basics - type a document/report, a sign, labels or design cupcake toppers or things for my child (a problem I've run into this week preparing for my child's birthday). I'd also like a money/finance app and wondered if there was something available than the usual Quicken. There are so many apps to choose from and I don't want to spend more than I have to or spend anything on something that I don't need or won't use. I'm all for spending money on doing it right, just need some guidance. Any suggestions?
Another question: What's the best way to protect my Mac? I'm careful about emails, etc., and I'm scared to death to download any apps online unless it's the App Store - am I correct in thinking that it's safe??
I appreciate any and all suggestions in advance...this has been quite the headache

Apple's own iWork suite (+Pages, Numbers, Keynote)+ is more than enough for the vast majority of users. I'm a "power user" - I prepare manuscripts for publishing using InDesign and Microsoft Word. Those are the tools I have to work with to be as close to 100% compatible with my collaborators as possible.
*But for all of MY document creation needs, I use Pages.* It's very powerful, providing all of the tools, templates, etc., one could want. And for presentations? Keynote is simply amazing and so much better than PowerPoint could ever hope to be. (and FYI, we're expecting anydaynow that Apple will release iWork '11... +since there is no indication from Apple whether those who purchase iWork '09 apps will have free or discounted upgrates to iWork '11 apps, you might want to wait+).
Labels is the one thing that catches a lot of folks when they move to the Mac - they expect it to be a part of the word processor (Pages), when it's really in a more logical place - *Address Book*! Use AB to track your contacts. Make groups of contacts (like, Christmas list), Select the group you want to print onto labels, and choose File-->Print. In the Print dialogue, you'll find options to choose various label formats and other customizations.
Two essential additions are Perian and Flip4Mac. These are two System Preference add-ons that will allow your Mac to play WMV and other multimedia files that you may encounter on the internet.
For much more information and suggestion for new Mac owners, check out the Mac Help section at the Canadian Mac User's forum, ehmac.ca! We have a thread specific to your question, always pinned to the top of the forum

  • What are the best sequence settings for anamorphic?

    sorry for the long explanation....
i have a project that was shot 16:9. my question is what is the best sequence setting to use so that when i export it to tape it will look right on a regular TV? on the FCP viewer it looks right with either setting. the difference is that if i choose a regular sequence setting ("anamorphic" unchecked), the video clips need to be rendered (it's green, but it will limit my ability to add effects and watch them without rendering). therefore i would prefer to use the anamorphic setting that does not need rendering. However, when i export the movie it comes out stretched (and only works with TV that has an anamorphic setting).
Can i edit the whole project with the anamorphic sequence setting and in the end copy it to a regular sequence without it becoming stretched?
i tried this on a little test sequence and it appeared to work, but i'm afraid that if the project becomes elaborate... well, last time i tried editing an anamorphic sequence (a while back, on FCP 2) i had to redo my whole film cut by cut with a regular sequence setting and then render it anamorphic so that it will look right.... it simply didn't work to just cut and paste the project onto a new regular sequence (could this have happened because i had many effects?). it came out stretched as it would when you merely uncheck the "anamorphic" box. has this been solved in the newer versions?

Your settings -- between the Compressor, Pixel Aspect Ratio and Frame Size -- are oil-and-water.
If this is going to YouTube (meaning not going to be viewed on traditional TVs) and it's mainly Photos, try using this:
    Frame Size: 1280x720
    Aspect Ratio: HDTV 720p
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square
    Editing Timebase: 29.97
    Compressor: Motion JPEG A
Quality: 100% (though in a lot of cases, you could drag this down to about 75-80% and quality will not suffer)
Unfortunately, you won't get much (if any) real-time effects. Unless, of course, you're on FCP 6 or later, where you can use a ProRes compressor instead. But with your signature saying 10.4. something, I wasn't sure if it was safe to assume that. The Motion-JPEG setting should work in all versions.

  • What are the best design requisites for a Query design?

    Hi Guru's
Could you please let me know, which item will execute first when you run a query,I mean Calculated keyfigure, restricted keyfigure or formula  e,t,c...How does it effects the Query performance? What are the design requisites to optimise better query performance?
    Thanks in advance,
    rgds,
    Srini.

    Hi Srinivas....
The design of queries can have a significant impact on the performance.
Sometimes long running queries are the result of poor design, not just the amount
of data. There are a number of design techniques that developers can use to
    provide optimal query performance.
For example, in most cases characteristics should be placed in the rows and key
figures in the columns. A characteristic should only be used in the columns in
certain circumstances (like time). Characteristics having potentially many values
(such as 0MATERIAL) must not be added to the columns without a filter or
variables. Alternatively, it can be integrated into the query as a free characteristic
    – enabling it to be used in navigation.
If a relatively detailed time characteristic, such as calendar day (0CALDAY) is
added to the rows, the more aggregated time characteristics (such as calendar
month (0CALMONTH)) and calendar year (0CALYEAR) should also be included
in the free characteristics of the query. For most reports, a current period of time
(current month, previous or current calendar year) is useful. For this reason, the
use of variables is particularly relevant for time characteristics.
    To improve query performance
    1) Variables and drop down lists can improve query performance by making the
data request more specific. This is very important for queries against Data Store
Objects and InfoSets, which are not aggregated like InfoCubes.
    2) When using restricted key figures, filters or selections, try to avoid the Exclusion
option if possible. Only characteristics in the inclusion can use database indexes.
Characteristics in the exclusion cannot use indexes.
    3) When a query is run against a MultiProvider, all of InfoProviders in that
MultiProvider are read. The selection of the InfoProviders in a MultiProvider
query can be controlled by restricting the virtual characteristic 0INFOPROVIDER
to only read the InfoProviders that are needed. In this way, there will be no
    unnecessary database reads.
    4) Defining calculated key figures at the InfoProvider level instead
of the query level will improve query runtime performance, but may add
    time for data loads.
    5) Cell calculation by means of the cell editor generates separate queries at query
runtime. Be cautious with cell calculations.
    6) Customer-specific code is necessary for virtual key figures and characteristics.
       Check Code in Customer Exits.
7)Using graphics in queries, such as charts, can have a performance impact.
    Hope this helps.........
    Regards,
    Debjani.........

  • What are the best sequence settings for a movie to be put on youtube?

I am making a video that consists of mainly jpegs and audio. The final movie needs to be crisp and fairly high resolution because the pictures have some house plans that need to be easily read.
I have tried the following settings only to get a blurry image result in the end:
Frame Size: 960x720 Aspect Ratio: HD (960x720) (16:9)
Pixel Aspect Ratio: NTSC - CCIR 601 DV 720X480
    Editing Timebase: 29.97
    Quicktime Video Settings:
    Compressor DVCPRO50 - NTSC
    Quality: 100%
This seems to me like it should be a crisp enough image result but the end result is very poor. When I use the H.264 Compressor instead of DVCPRO50 - NTSC, the image is much sharper but the faded transitions are sometimes choppy, and you have to render the timeline with each change you make. Please help me find the best overall settings for smooth editing and sharper image.
    Thanks,
    Caleb
