What are the downsides to extending an Airport Express's network with Airport Extreme?

Or are there downsides at all, assuming latest generation Airports? I think it happens more often than not that the position of the modem from your ISP in the dwelling is not the ideal location for a router, and it is sometimes inconvenient/impossible to wire an ethernet connection to the optimal location. I have an Airport Extreme and an Airport Express, and was thinking of hooking up the Express to the modem and having the Extreme extend that network, placed at the optimal router location. My concern with that setup is whether the Extreme will use all of its antennas, since the Express has fewer (6 vs 2 if I'm correct).

Or are there downsides at all, assuming latest generation Airports?
There are none. You might be confusing such a "wirelessly extended" network with a WDS, which was a horrible compromise with significant disadvantages.
The optimal location for the second AirPort might not be obvious. Keep in mind that it can only "wirelessly extend" the signal it is capable of receiving. Place it in a location where the wireless signal created by the main router remains strong, while still being able to create a network that covers your required wireless service area.
Don't worry about the number of antennas or how they are used. They're all used.

    Extend.
What's the difference between "Extend" or "Join" a wireless network?
When you configure the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) to "join an existing wireless network" it will perform like any other wireless client (laptop, printer, etc.) that connects to that wireless network. It will NOT perform as a router nor extend the wireless range of (in this case) the Time Capsule (TC).
However, if you configure the AX to "extend a wireless network" it will perform as an additional wireless access point to your TC's wireless network, effectively extending the TC's wireless range. In addition, the AX's Ethernet port will also be enabled and you can connect a single Ethernet client or multiple ones if you connect an Ethernet switch instead.

  • What are the steps for extending a OAF page (11iApplication Salary screen)

I couldn't proceed further beyond step 3 after following the instruction in OAF Developer's Guide, Chapter 9, Common BC4J Extension, page 890.
    In Step 3, it says...
Create a new view object that extends the parent VO (you create the extended VO just as you would any other view object with the following difference: specify the name of the parent VO in the Extends View Object field in the first page of the wizard). Be sure to follow the naming standard described above.
Note that the parent VO package must be included in your project before you can extend the parent VO.
The issue I have now is, during the creation of a new VO, I need to extend the parent VO. However, I do not see any parentVO in the Parent window for me to select.
I want to know what are the initial steps or normal steps you usually do when extending a OAF page, so I know where I missed.
    Thanks.

  • Extending airport express wireless network with another airport express

I am trying to set up another airport express to my existing airport express at home so I can extend the wireless range and also to connect my printer (to my second airport express) so I can have a shared wireless printer. Is this possible? If so, can someone assist me on how to set this up?
    Thanks.

    Try the following ...
AirPort Express Base Station (AX) - WDS Setup
"Factory Reset" the AX base stations
    o (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044)
(Note: To facilitate setting up the base stations, place them in near proximity of each other during the setup phase. Also record the Apple IDs of each base station that will included in the WDS as these will be required during setup.)
    Main Base Station Setup
(Note: The AX connected to the Internet will be assumed to be the main base station in the WDS.)
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or by temporarily connecting directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then use the AirPort Admin Utility to make the following settings.
    WDS Tab
    1. Enable this base station as a WDS: main base station (checked)
    2. Allow wireless clients on this base station (checked)
    3. Click "+" to add Remote/Relay Base Stations.
3a. Select the Base Station that you want to be the WDS Remote/Relay.
3b. AirPort ID: <verify that this is the correct MAC address for the Base Station you are adding as a Remote/Relay.>
3c. Auto configure as a WDS remote base station (checked)
    3d. Click "OK."
    4. Verify that the Remote/Relay Base Station has been added to the list.
    5. Click "Update," and then verify the settings for the Remote/Relay.
5a. Allow wireless clients on this base station (checked)
5b. New network name: <verify that this is the same as the network name as the main base station>
    5c. TCP/IP: Configure using DHCP
    5d. Base Station Password: <the Remote/Relay Base Station password>
    5e. Confirm: <same as previous step>
    5f. Click "OK."

  • Airplay won't connect to my Airport Express & is intermittent with Airport Utility

    Hi
Yesterday, my iTunes 10 stopped connecting via Airplay to my Airport Express. It spent a long time displaying a Connecting message, then finally gave me this error message: "An unknown error (-15006) occurred while connecting to the AirPlay device AirPort Express”.
    I have a Macbook Pro 2.5 Ghz Intel Core i5 (6 months old). 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3.
    Running OS X 10.7.5.
My main modem/router is a Livebox and I usually going my Airport Express to the Livebox network to play music.
    My Airport Express is 802.11g
All my equipment is within a radius of 2 or 3 feet.
I'm aware of at least one other recent thread about this problem (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4150757?tstart=0), but none of the solutions suggested have resolved my problem, so I have summarized a list of the actions I have so far taken to try and resolve the problem. Hopefully, this will help others sort this issue out for themselves.
    ACTIONS TO SOLVE ISSUE
    1. Ran Airport Utility 6.1, which was unable to find my AX.
    2. Downloaded, installed & ran Airport Utility 5.6. AU 5.6 still couldn't find my AX, giving me this error message:
"AirPort Utility was unable to find any AirPort wireless devices. Make sure the AirPort wireless device you want to set up is plugged in and in range of your computer, and then click rescan to try again."
    3. Unplugged the AX and did a hard reset. AU found my AX and I configured it to join my Livebox network. After being configured, the green light came on the AX, which also appeared on the AU list of devices. However, AU still had the message "Waiting for Airport Express to reset…" with a spinning ball for several minutes. So, I closed the AU window (as AU advised), and reopened it. Happily, the AX was still listed.
    4. Reopened iTunes and tried to select my AX as speaker output. At that exact moment, the AX vanished from the AU list of devices and, after the long wait, iTunes gave me the same error message as before:
"An unknown error (-15006) occurred while connecting to the AirPlay device AirPort Express”.
When I tried to rescan for devices in AU, I got the same error message:
"AirPort Utility was unable to find any AirPort wireless devices. Make sure the AirPort wireless device you want to set up is plugged in and in range of your computer, and then click rescan to try again."
    5. Hard reset and configuration of AX. This time I didn't close the AU window, I waited for the AX to reset. When the spinning ball finally vanished, I got this error message:
"An error occurred while reading the configuration. Make sure your Apple Wi-Fi base station is plugged in and in range of your computer or connected via Ethernet and try again. (-6753)"
    6. Apple help pages suggested updating the AX firmware. I downloaded the firmware update, did the AX hard reset/configuration routine, then tried to run the firmware installer and got this error message:
"An error occurred while attempting to communicate with the AirPort Express. (-8)"
    7. Ran all the software updates, including upgrading to iTunes 11.
    8. Spent over 5 hours doing many many hard resets of the AX, combined with iTunes restarts, MBP restarts etc. Along the way, I discovered that if I hard reset  & configured the AX, after a few minutes, AX would disappear from the AU device list without me doing anything.
    9. Attempted to change IPv6 options, using following methods:
    a. System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced -> TCP/IP ->   IPv6 _> Link-local only
    b. In Terminal.
    networksetup -listallnetworkservices
    networksetup -setv6off Wi-Fi
Neither method had any effect on the ability of AU to see my AX.
Phew! I'm now exhausted & rather demoralised. Anyone got any other ideas?

I have been dealing with this for days now. I'm not sure what the solution is either, I've spent most of my vacation from work attempting to get it to work with my speakers and printer, none work still!!
It seems like a lot of ppl are dealing with these errors but there isn't one solid solution out there.
Try to set the AX wirless setting to "off" and only have it work for Airplay, Does it work for you?
One last thing, could this be an update problem? As in, you update your firmware/software and it renders the AX obselte. My AX is old probably a little older than 4-5 years, what about your?
I would really like to get this to work as I do not think I need a new AX to make this work.
    Let me know your thoughts.
    B.

  • I am changing ISPs and will be dropping two email addresses I use as AppleID's.  Can I keep them as AppleID's and use a rescue e-mail address from a new ISP?  What are the downsides if I have an iCloud address as an alias under one of those addresses?

I am about to change internet service providers and will be dropping two e-mail addresses that I use as Apple ID’s.  One is used solely for iTunes and the other is used for iCloud, mail, calendars, etc.  The second has two iCloud email address as aliases.  I will be going to a new ISP and will establish an e-mail address from that ISP as a backup in case the iCloud addresses are not available.
It has been suggested to me that I should continue to use the e-mail addresses from the old ISP as my Apple ID’s.  And that I use the e-mail address from the new ISP as a rescue e-mail address for those Apple ID’s to get any communications relating to the ID’s. That seems like a simple and straight-forward way of handling the change and would minimize the chance of complications from changing the Apple ID’s.  But, are there any downsides to handling the change in this way?  If so, what are they?

You can continue to use them as Apple ID's, change the rescue address (as you know)
You can use your iCloud address, but it won't be an alias, it's a full email address.

  • Airport Express to network to Airport Extreme Printing

I have an Airport Express upstairs and Airport Extreme downstairs. The Extreme is connected to our printer. Both are connected through a sonic wall router to the interenet. I can print fine via airport when I'm connected to the Extreme, but cannot find the printer when connected to the Express.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    John

    1. Both Airports are connected via ethernet to a Sonic Wall Router. The Router is connected via WAN to a Satellite Modem. I have two computers in the house: PowerMac and a Powerbook. The AExtreme is on one end of the house downstairs and is connected to the printer via USB. The AExpress is on the other end of the house and upstairs.
    2. The Desktop only connects through the AExtreme because the signal from the AExpress does not reach that far, so I can't answer this question. I have no computers connected via ethernet cable... I'll get a cable later and try this out...
    3. This is interesting. If I am "connected" via the Express, the Express is all I see. If I connect via the Extreme, I can see both. As I mentioned above, I'll try connecting directly when I have a spare cable handy.
I know it is probably something simple... Thanks for your response. I will give this a shot tomorrow if time allows. Thanks again!
    See 'ya,
    John

  • Getting alerts my browser needs upgrade. I must upgrade ios to get updated browser. What are the downsides to upgrading ios?

I have a snow leapord ios which allows safari 5.1 as the "latest" browser. Many of the sites I visit are asking me to upgrade the browser. Looking into this I found that I need to upgrade the operating system first and I want to be sure that I can do that without losing anything that is currently on my desktop. What should I expect when doing a ios upgrade, and will that include the safari upgrade as well or is it a separate task. Thanks

Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.
Upgrading the OS will upgrade Safari. Alternatively, you can switch to a product such as Firefox and stay on Snow Leopard.

  • What are the downsides to working with Proxy Media?

My iMac is one of the more powerful ones:  i7, 2 internal drives (the main one is a 256 GB flash drive), ATI Radeon HD 5750 w/1 GB VRAM, 16 GB RAM.  But I notice that when I'm trying to apply multiple effects to a compound clip and then use crop to zoom on it, it starts dropping frames all over the place and barely plowing through.
I'm wondering if I should edit with proxy media.  I know one disadvantage is the amount of space it takes to have both proxy and regular media, but I have plenty of disk space.  I edit AVCHD footage that I optimize upon import.
I will also be doing a lot of multicam editing.
So I'm thinking proxy media is the way to go.  But I have to wonder what the disadvantages to using proxy media are.  For instance, since you're editing with a lower-quality version of the video, does that mean that when you do things like color correction you aren't getting a good a final result when you switch back to the regular media?
    I'd appreciate any advice/tips.

    JDLee wrote:
....  you aren't getting a good a final result when you switch back to the regular media?
no, the color correction is done with the 'HDef' material.
proxies is just a pre-view thing; esp. when doing multicam, the amount of data shoveling from/to harddrive is enormously ... theoretically, even a fw800 connected super-fast Raid can handle only a max. of 10 HDef streams ...
I'm on consumer/hobbyist level - handling here 4 streams from usb-drives - as proxies, no problem.
when editing is done, you switch back to original/optimized and export in  shiny 100% ...

  • Target Display Mode as a docking solution - What are the downsides?

    Hi,
I have a work 13" air with T.B and a new personal imac 27" at home which also has T.B. I have found this great feature that allows you to put the air in target disk mode (hold down t whilst booting) and then boot the imac whilst holding down the option key and then select the air's disk to boot from. For me this works really well, I keep my work and personal machines seperate, I can use the same (imac's) keyboard and mouse without having to keep pairing via BT, the air gets more memory and cpu and as yet I have not noticed a lag accessing the air's SSD over thunderbolt. I appreciate I cannot run both at the same time but that is not an issue for me.
My question is can this solution if used upset / damage the OS if used frequenty 3-4 times per week? It seems a little too good to be true.
    Thanks
    Marc

There should be no problems as far as I can see if it works for the iMac with the drivers on the Air, the Air is just acting like an external boot drive... & yes, Target Mode is one of Apple's best ever idea.
May want to disable Software Uodates while running that way though.
