Also to reiterate. I am not part of a NETWORK. I live at home with my wife. Why can I not just be ONE USER! Is it possible?
Hello, clbobman!
Please note that is topic has been dormant for two years. Since few people are likely to still be following it, it would be better to start a new topic of your own if you need help with this, preferably in the forum for the OS version you are using.
With that out of the way, please be aware that you are most certainly part a network. It is the Internet, the largest one on the planet! As was mentioned by several contributors back when this topic was active, users & groups exist largely to protect your privacy & security from the millions & millions of other users who share that vast network with you.
Unfortunately, an ever increasing number of those users are criminals who would like nothing better than for you to run an OS that provided little or nothing to prevent them from taking over control of your computer remotely, stealing the personal & private information you have stored on it & using it however they want, installing software to do their bidding instead of yours, & so on. Even if they aren't completely successful, the attack may leave your system unstable or sluggish, destroy some or all of your document files, or even corrupt the file system so badly that you would have to erase everything & start fresh with a new installation of the OS to recover.
With just one user who has unrestricted access to control everything, that isn't very hard to do. To prevent this (& to prevent users from accidentally doing things with the same result), like in every other modern OS, OS X includes a complex system of permissions to restrict & control access to various parts of the system. In OS X, this is implemented as an abstracted system of users & groups, each given permissions to perform only specific kinds of tasks.
So for example, when a human user like you or me asks the Mac to do something, that request may be handed off to one or more non-human users, each able to handle only part of that task, & relying (like us) on other non-human users to do what it can't.
This compartmentalization makes it very difficult to take over control of the Mac & force it to do things it should not do, whether by accident or intent. It also makes it difficult to understand exactly how it all works. Fortunately, as has already been said, as users we don't need to unless we are intent on changing it. And if we are going to do that, we better have a very good understanding of how it all works. (Otherwise, it is very likely we will just break things, cause data loss, or worse.)
If understanding all that is your goal, Apple's developer web site is full of info you can study, & there are quite a few books on the subject. But be warned, this is not simple stuff. It can take months or years to absorb it all.
That's why most of us leave it to the programmers & just use our Macs to do the stuff we want without worrying too much about how it does that.

  • What are the differences between Mac Air and Mac Pro?

What are really the main differences between the Macbook Air and the MacBook Pro?
I am thinking of getting a laptop by mac. I like the prices of the Air but the Pro seems better performance.
However my needs are internet, email, word processing and some photos, pictures etc.
would i still be able to do many good applications on the Air vs the Pro?
    suggestions please?
    thanks

The base model current 2013 Air will perform faster and better in general than the base model 13" non-Retina Macbook Pro.
    Ive got both of them.
    On the Air:
    Faster wifi (by far) 802ac
Faster boot and read/ write due to SSD
Much longer battery life due to Haswell upgrade made in June
Crisper sharper screen, better to stare at for long periods
MUCH FEWER parts to go bad,.....also only one moving part, the Fan
No HD to crash from mechanical failure
Packing the AIr around is a dream since is nearly the weight of an Ipad.
Dont get fooled like most do in seeing the super-skinny AIr as less than a full power machine, ....thats always someones first huge mistake when they see one.

  • What are the contents of Mac OS X Install Disc 2

I bought my mac a few years ago, and i recently swiped it and wiped it clean again, to make it faster, which it has. When i was installing the CD's, the install dic 1 was fine, but when it said to insert disc 2 to continue the installation my mac wasn't reading it. Therefore i just did not install it. Yesterday i downloaded the disc 2 online, but i wanted to know what the contents were of disc 2 just so i knew what i had, if anyone could help that would be great

Any download of 10.5 discs online is illegal.  The only legal means of getting 10.5 is by DVD.    Also any downloaded copies may be pre-release data, or data infected with trojans.  Stay far far away from those downloads.

  • What are the differences between mac and pc versions of elements 12

I am a Mac user and have been disappointed at some of the limitations of elements 11 on my Mac versus what I understand you can do on a pc. Have these issues been corrected for Mac users in elements 12? Thanks

I have to say that I find it really amusing when people who don't use a specific feature for a software program automatically criticize people who do need and/or use it. I realize that many people have different workflows, and some people use certain features often, whereas other people don't use those features at all. It doesn't mean that the feature should not be in the program. Having said that, I find watched folders to be indispensable for my workflow. In addition to photography, I do a lot of graphic design work. I use Photoshop Elements mainly for organizing all of my image files. I use the full version of Photoshop for most of my photo editing and graphic design work. I build most graphic design projects from the ground up in Photoshop. On the pc, once I initially saved the graphic design file, it would automatically be imported into the organizer for me. Any edits I made to photgraphs and then saved as psd files were also imported automatically into the organizer. As it stands now, I have to remember to (and sometimes hunt around for) any of these files after the fact so that I can import them in to the organizer. With 3 kids running around my house, I am often interrupted while working, and forget to immediately import the files into the organizer. It is a real pain in the neck for me to have to go back and search for files, sometimes weeks after I have created them. I really liked the way it worked on my pc and don't understand why it isn't available on the Mac. Lightroom has a version of the watched folder (though it moves files out of that folder upon import) and a synchronize folders function (though not automatic, and might take a while for a large catalog), both available on the Mac, so I would think that it's not really a Mac limitation. Then again, I'm not a programmer, and I know that something that seems like a small fix to me may require a huge amount of coding to accomplish. I just wish Adobe would tell me if this is NEVER going to happen, so that I can move on and establish a new workflow.

  • What are the optimal values for mac and arp timeout values

    Hi Guys.
What are the best values for "mac address-table aging-time" and "arp timeout" by following scenarios?:
    - single sg300-10 as layer3-switch with a maximum of 10 local (direct connected) hosts
    - and a 3750x-stack with 100 local hosts + hsrp with a other stack of the same sort
or for asa 5520 as internet gateway for 500 clients?
I use at the moment a mac aging-time from 300 seconds and a arp timeout from 3600 seconds.
    Is this o.k.?
    Thanks.

    Marvel.
As far as enhancing the CLI, it will of course be enhanced when new firmware releases provide new features. As far as making it more IOS-like, best to my knowledge, no.  The only other supported CLI on the SB switches are on the SX500 series and SX200E series which the CLI are all consistent. If you bought a SX500 series the commands are nearly identical minus the different feature sets.

Advisable is irrelevant...  It is not possible.  There has not been a version of IE for Mac for a long time.  You will have to load Windows on your Mac in order to run IE, or try making your browser mimic IE.  (In Safari, go to Safari -> Preferences, click the Advanced tab and check the box to show the Develop menu.  Then, in that menu, choose User Agent -> Internet Explorer x.0.)  Note that doing that will not work if the site relies on some weird non-standard feature of IE that no other browser on the planet has.

can I interrupt a migration from Mac Book Pro to iMac and what are the consequences

    Les:
    Here are some options:
    • You could copy the data file to your laptop, work on it, and update the file on the iMac when you are back.
    • You can use an application like Log Me In to access your home computer from your laptop.
    • You can use DropBox. Install it on both computers, place your data file in a folder on the iMac, access it and work on it on your laptop and it will be automatically updated on your computer at home, even if it is not turned on, as soon as it is connected to the internet.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.

Well, try this (I was able to fix my with these steps):
    Go Utilities > Disk Utility
Select your Startup Disk, e.g. Macintosh HD
Then, under the First Aid Tab, click Verify Disk Permissions.
If there are errors, then click repair Disk Permissions.
After it is done, restart the computer and see if your problem is resolved.
    I hope this help.

  • What is the story on mac vulnerability? Is it serious or not serious?  If not serious, why is this not being explained?  If serious, why are Mac users not being informed of the risk?

what is the story on mac vulnerability? Is it serious or not serious?
If serious, why are we not kept informed
If not serious, why is some much anxiety being created?

IMO, it is being greatly over-blown in the media and online.
Man in the middle attacks require the hacker to be connected to the same intranet network that your device is.  Even if they are, unless you go to a secure site and use personal data (like passcodes) they get nothing from stealing your data stream.
If you are at your home, on your own secured intranet, then you really have virtually nothing to fear (as long as your own home network is secured and not wide open to anybody within range).  If you routinely use a VPN connection when on public wifi, again, you are fine.  Or if you use FireFox, Chrome or another browser that implements its own SSL security, then you are fine.
The fact is, that even for those in a particular situation that is vulnerable to such an attack, most are not actually under any such attack - it is not nearly as rampant as the recent hype would have it seem to be.

  • What is the best way to run windows on my Mac? And What are the pitfalls I should watch for?

What is the best way to run windows on my Mac?   What are the pitfalls/

If you need Windows as your main operating system you would be better off buying a Real Windows PC.
Running windows on a Mac is always a compromise. Whether in a Boot Camp partition or in a Virtual Machine.
In boot camp you can't easily Re-Partition and or Re-Size the drive it is installed on. You can't use both graphics cards as Apple has limited Windows to use the discrete graphics only, that is if your mac has 2 graphics cards (15" MBPs), which will shorten the battery run time in Windows.
The trackpad only has limited functions in Windows, less then is available on the Mac side and a real Windows PC.

So the question is relevant at least to the extent that it is asking for a comparison between a MacBook Pro and a MacBook Air
MacBookAir definitely favors portability and sports a dual core i5 at 1.5GHz (max RAM is 4GB not user upgradable)
MacBook Pro  has upto a quad core i7 at 2.4GHz (ships with 4GB and upgradeable to as much as 16GB on some models)

  • What are the security implications of having JAVA running on my Mac Book Pro?

What are the security implications of having JAVA running on my Mac Book Pro?

Java on the Web (not to be confused with JavaScript, to which it's not related, despite the similarity of the names) is a weak point in the security of any system. Java is, among other things, a platform for running complex applications in a web page, on the client. That was always a bad idea, and Java's developers have proven themselves incapable of implementing it without also creating a portal for malware to enter. Past Java exploits are the closest thing there has ever been to a Windows-style virus affecting OS X. Merely loading a page with malicious Java content could be harmful.
Fortunately, client-side Java on the Web is obsolete and mostly extinct. Only a few outmoded sites still use it. Try to hasten the process of extinction by avoiding those sites, if you have a choice. Forget about playing games or other non-essential uses of Java.
Java is not included in OS X 10.7 and later. Discrete Java installers are distributed by Apple and by Oracle (the developer of Java.) Don't use either one unless you need it. Most people don't. If Java is installed, disable it — not JavaScript — in your browsers.
Regardless of version, experience has shown that Java on the Web can't be trusted. If you must use a Java applet for a task on a specific site, enable Java only for that site in Safari. Never enable Java for a public website that carries third-party advertising. Use it only on well-known, login-protected, secure websites without ads. In Safari 6 or later, you'll see a lock icon in the address bar with the abbreviation "https" when visiting a secure site.
