What are you using as a Flash replacement for 64-bit machines?

Hi,
I was reading about the vulnerabilities in Adobe's Flash and decided to remove the offending package. I opened Chromium to make sure my Flash still worked, as I understood that Chromium implemented another method for rendering Flash stuff. I was wrong. For example, YouTube tells me that I need Flash 10 or higher. I tried to re-install the flashplugin package, but it is no longer in the repos.
I can live without Flash content, but it's nice to have.
So the question is, what are you using instead, that can be installed from the main repos?
Many thanks,
Chris.

I have installed both lightspark 0.4.3 and gnash 0.8.8, since lightspark should be able to 'fall back to gnash for older videos' (see changelog of lightspark).
I have tried some flash-websites in firefox and all of them seem to use gnash and there was 1 website that didn't load the content (www.deredactie.be - our national tvstation). So, I'm under the impression that lightspark is not used by firefox.
Has anyone found out how to do this?
Secondly, gnash should be able to use VA-API (hardware acceleration). Is it just a question to install libva and let gnash do the rest, or does one have to recompile gnash to build the support in?
Zl.
PS: to whoever thinks flashplugin is the 'real flash': gnash has beaten it in terms of providing hardware acceleration. hooray for opensource!

Looking for a drum loop app that will run in the background. Suggestions? What are you using? I tried Loopseque and I like it, but I can't make it run once I switch apps. Help please.

That's definitely strange, kzmidge. I want a working phone in your hands though. I noticed you mentioned you received the suggestion to complete a reset. Did you already do that? Is it working again? Are you receiving an error message?
If you hesitated a little longer to complete the reset, you can try to place your phone into Safe Mode http://vz.to/rxg0ii and see if you can access mobile sites from your browser. This mode will stop 3rd party applications from running, so you won't be able to use the apps you mentioned but we may be able to narrow down the trouble in Safe Mode. If the mobile sites work, that means the trouble may be in a recently downloaded application and you may be able to avoid the reset my uninstalling some of your more recently installed applications. If it's still giving you trouble, the reset http://vz.to/18wzOCi is the next best step.

  • What are you using as RSS Reader on iPhone?

I am an RSS junkie, and this is how I quickly get my news every day. If you have not yet discovered the power of RSS, it lets you quickly browse headlines from dozens of web sites in one-stop shopping.
What have you found to be the best way to manage and read RSS feeds on your iPhone?
I had been using a Mac-based app called NewsFire on my MacBook, but they told me there is 0% chance of porting this to be an iPhone app.
So I am shopping for a new RSS reader to manage all of the feeds I subscribe to.
What RSS reader do you like on the iPhone? Are you just using Google Reader or Safari, or have you found something cooler? What do you like about the reader you chose?
    Thanks!
    Brian

I haven't used RSS on iPhone, but I understand if you click an RSS feed in iPhone Safari it'll use
reader.mac.com, though apparently it doesn't have many features. Maybe more sites or widgets will come out sometime?
You can ask Apple for iPhone changes via this link:
http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html Though if you're requesting hardware changes for iPhone v2 you may want to wait a week (or a month?)...they're probably going to be inundated right now by requests for software changes to the current iPhone.

  • What are you using for identity managment--windows?

We have windows iis, active directory. if anyone has developed detailed instsructions for this it would be greatly appreciated.

If you search this discussion for "C#" you will find some example code for a C# based transfer script. I'm not sure its specific to Active Directory, but it should get you started.
I don't know much about Active Directory, but I assume that it has APIs that you can call from C# to get authorization information.

  • When are you applicable to get a replacement for an iphone 5?

I got my iphone 5 about 7 months ago and I have a 1 year warranty on it.
It's been a while and my phone has been starting to act up in ways of:
The lock button not working unless pressed hard on the left side
When i'm typing a message the screen tends to freeze (I tried deleting things because i thought it was caused by the lack of  memory, i turned my phone on and off, but it still happend.
It's stuck on headphones mode for a week now and i've tried everything like sucking and blowing it, inserting and taking out the headphones, turned off/on my phone, tried cleaning it with tissue & cotton swabs.
I dropped my phone twice and there is a crack on the side (i know that it cant be replace because of that) BUT it seems like the crack is getting bigger and there is debris or something going under the glass and i'm not sure how to take it off.
How can you get a replacement online? I'm kind of scared of going to the Apple Store.
If there is no possible way of getting a replacement is there somewhere i cant get my phone fixed?

Why are you scared to take it to an Apple Store? Either way you'll have to pay for a replacement - Apple does not repair iPhones for problems such as you report, they replace them - and an Apple Store will do it on the spot.
If you insist on doing in via ship-in, though, go here:

and start the process through the Service Requests and Troubleshooting link.

  • What are you're thoughts on OSX cracked for PC

http://apple.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/10/27/2056225&from=rss I read this article and am a little bit worried about being a future mac user. Am I understanding right that eventually hackers will be able to find a way to put OSX on non apple hardware? I hope apple does something about this in Leopard. Fewer useres and a generally more secure osx is what keeps Apple users safer.

What you say is true but as you say it is only part
of the story. It shouldn't deter you from getting a
Mac. I recommend that you read this:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/malspyware.html. It will
help you understand what the real issues are.
I looked at that website. They have a point about the spyware; that's why I'm a fully-paid-up Little Snitch user, and have been for a very long time. However, most of the 'spyware' out there is commercial software phoning home. (Example: DivX's stuff, Adobe's stuff...) The Mac spyware environment is nowhere near as problematic as the Windows spyware environment. Not by several orders of magnitude.
Furthermore, no matter how they try to spin it...
1 Symantec anything is a disaster on OS X. Norton Anti Virus is less of a disaster than Norton Utilities, but that's the difference between a category 2 and a category 5 hurricane. No Symantec product will ever touch any computer, Mac or Windows, that I'm responsible for. Period. Commercial Mac anti virus is, in general, a solution looking for a problem and causing more trouble than its worth. Free anti virus is still a solution looking for a problem, but at least you don't have to pay for it. If you must get anti virus, get free anti virus. It's worth pretty much what you paid. Note that I was a long time Virex user, dating back to when it was first released. I dropped it when it ate a lot of my email due to the way it was designed. Long story, but the last time I had a look at their user forums they hadn't fixed that particular problem, and it's a show-stopper for me. Meanwhile the free anti virus systems simply crawl. They're pitiful.
2 There simply are no serious malware out in the wild for OS X. None. The last one was the autostart worm, which has been defunct for almost a decade. There are concept malware. There are trojans designed to attract the dishonest and greedy (and stupid; boyz'n'grrlz, stop, think... that 120 kB file which calls itself the Office 2004 installer that you just got over Kazaa or some other P2P network, where does it go to get the 600 MB of files necessary to install Office? Isn't more likely that it'll do something bad than that it'll connect to a Top Secret ftp server in Redmond and slurp down Office from behind Billg's back?) so if you don't want to steal something or look at something you shouldn't be looking at (NDAed pix of Leopard, for example, or nudey pix of some tennis player who's never won a major, for another) you're safe from them. The current Mac malware situation is... well, not there.
If I suspect something may have a problem, I crank up one of the freeware anti virus systems and have a look at it. I might have the same system check out my system overnight, as it'll take that long because it's so slow, maybe once a month or so. That's plenty, in the absence of an actual for real threat. If/when a real threat shows, I'll get a commercial system. One which is actually fast and which doesn't eat my hard drive. (Hint: not anything from Symantec.)

  • Naming Standards: What are you using?

I'd like to hear what different organizations are using for naming standards to manage their XI environment.
When you have a new interface or need to call up an existing interface, how do you know where to find them?
Do you break out your interfaces by Sender SC, XI SC and receiver SC?
    How do you organize namespaces?

    Hi Mark,
Well, The name space itself it means that it used for unique identifier.Normally in realtime business cases lot  of process would be involved..when you are developing the interface and when you start up with namespace..The name space should give you the what exactly the scenario..for which type of scenarios..
Let me take an example suppose if u are implementing the all sales order scenario you can probably implement a name space such that it should reflect the all sales order related objects.
      <b>Ex: http://xyzcompany.com./salesorders</b>
The above namespace tell you that the vendor is xyzcompany and the corresponding objects of slaes orders.
    Hope I am clear.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Chandu.

  • What are you using to create dynamic content?

I'm new to the cisco DMP system and I'm trying to figure out how others are displaying dynamic content.  The built in designer is a bit limiting.  I've created a few elements in flash, but if the system does not like anything full-screen.
I've used previous digital signage products and they were all a bit like powerpoint with different slides and each slide could have text, animations, etc.
    Thanks.

If you are doing it via a web page and can edit the css do something like:
    body{
    margin:0;
    padding:0;
Then make the flash 100% wide and tall.

  • What are you using Catalyst for?

Since we can't do polls, I  thought we could answer in a discussion. Here are the choices:
    1) Prototyping
    2) Flex Application design
    3) Widget design (embedded in a web page)
    4) Complete site design
    I'll start:
I use it mostly for 1) Prototyping and a little for 2) Flex Application design

1 (and hoping it also has potential as a designer's rapid mockup presentation tool to maximize the WOW factor so I can get my projects funded!)

  • New Mac Pro: What are You using to connect your eSATA external drives to you nMacPro?

    Hi,
I have some eSATA external HDs that I would like to use with my 2013 New Mac Pro.
I was just wondering what other  have been using to connect their nMPs to eSATA devices and how well it has worked.  I have seen a USB3 to eSATA cable from NewEgg.... which seems like a good idea ... if it will work.
    Thanks!

LaCie TB HUB has two TB ports which is good for daisy chain. Has two esata ports also. I connect a Voyager bought from OWC to one sata port and that's where my bare 2.5 and 3.5 hard drives reside when I need them. The other sta port has a Pioneer 207 blu ray drive. When I sleep my 2013 Mac Pro I turn off the power to the Voyager and the Pioneer. All work flawlessly.

  • What are you using for SD Capture

    Hi,
I need a external device or an internal pci-e card for capture of SD footage. I transfer old footage to dvd for alot of clients.
    i have been looking at
    Black Magic Intensity Pro
    http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/
    or
    Grassvalley
    http://www.grassvalley.com/products/advc_professional_family
Any thoughts of these two products. or any recomendations.
i was using a matrox rtx.2. but do not require this card for cs5 as there is no support, and doubt there will be.
    Baz

It's been Grass Valley for sometime, but the Canopus name still seems to apply to the 110 and the 300 units. Not sure why, or if that is official. Still, almost every reseller still lists them as Canopus.
    Hunt
PS - I like the 300 with a Panny VHS/SVHS/DVD deck. I only use the DVD feature to archive clients' VHS tapes, or run poor compliance DVD-Videos through it to Capture, rather than rip. One has no device control that way, but with the mouse in one hand and the remote in the other, it is so very easy.
    Good luck,

  • What are you using for Fan speed AND temp monitor?

Thanks to Bosskiller, my rig seems to be running a bit stabler now!  Knock on wood.  Is there any program other than MSI's core center that monitor fan speed AND temp?   I used to use MBM but it's no longer being supported and CoreCenter doesn't seem all that popular here?

Actually how accurate is the temp reading on HWMonitor for your MSI board?  One thing I noticed is that w/ Coretemeter the temp reading was around 48-50c on Rig#1 and almost 58-60c on Rig#2 (That's my HTPC w/ EXTREMELY tight spacings so still work in progress as far as cooling's concern!) but using HWMonitor I got 31c CONSISTENTLY on both rigs!     I'll love to think that I'm indeed running this cool but feeling the exhaust air, I think this 31c reading is not real...
