What do you do if all your music disappears into the Other folder......dreaded orange bar!

Hope this will help someone as there is clearly not much help from Apple nor this forum.
I am on vacation away from my home computer where my iTunes is.  I turned on my iPod and scrolled down to Music and it showed "No Music."  Went to "About" and saw that there were only 9GB of free space, so I felt for sure it was there because that's right at what I had when I last synced it, which was a couple days ago and it finished syncing with no problems.  Went to the next "About" screen where you can see how much Audio, Video etc. etc. you have and it showed 0 Audio and The "Other" category had all the data in it.  What happened to my music, and can I get it back on vacation without my iTunes on my computer at home?  I tried the holding down of the Select middle button and the Menu button until the Apple logo appeared but that did not restore any Audio.  Hope someone can help me out here.....Thanks
Re: Ipod Classic 160GB having issues, need help please?

Solved my issue and thought I might do someone a favor by posting the answer.  If you wind up with NO MUSIC and find all your audio files have been synced into the OTHER folder on your iPod such as what happened to me, AND if you happen to be unlucky enough not to have access to your computer where your iTunes program would allow you to re-sync your iPod, here's what worked for me in a Windows7 OS.
1.You will have to find a computer that has enough storage to hold the amount of information stored on your iPod.  In my case, 139GB!!!  Download iTunes if it is not already on the system, or if it is, update to the latest software.
2.  Plug your iPod into one of the USB ports.
3.  Open iTunes if it does not open itself.
4.  Select your iPod from the menu on the left and you should get a message that iTunes cannot read the iPod. Simply close that box.  If you get a message that syncing your iPod will erase all content then decline the sync.
5.  Open Computer and you should see your iPod as an external hard drive.
6.  Open it and you will see some folders and a few files.  The folders will likely look like they are a washed-out yellow instead of a deep yellow like you're accustomed to seeing.  That threw me initially because as I was looking for the folder with @ 139GB, it was not there.  Right click each folder, go to Properties and check the "Show hidden files" in the View menu.  After that, the folders will appear dark yellow and as you hover over each one, you will see one that will have the full amount of data that was on your iPod before the mess started. Open that folder and you will see a bunch of other folders with strange names, like F00, F01 etc. etc. Do the Edit, Select All, right click and in Properties, View menu, check the Show Hidden Files again.  All the folders that were that light yellow color will now turn deep yellow.  Be sure to select show hidden files not only for the folder but all sub folders and files box that will come up....forgot to mention that earlier.  Now all your folders and the files in them will be readable by iTunes.
7.  The folders will all still be selected.  If not, select them and then do either a copy/paste into iTunes Music Library or drag them over into that pane.  The process will begin and likely take quite a while.  In my case, several hours.  When it is done, you will see all your music in iTunes along with the album art if you had any.
8.  Now you will need to sync your iPod to that library, but before you do, you will need to Restore it.  Simply select it from the left menu and click on the Restore iPod option.  That will only take a few minutes and it will wipe your iPod clean.  Before you do that, it is a good idea to MAKE SURE YOUR MUSIC IS ALL THERE!!!  I also went to about a half dozen of the albums and tried playing a few songs just to be double sure.  Proceed with the Restore, and when it is complete change the iPod name that will be in the small box on the same page as the Restore option and likely be something like"karens iPod" (whoever the computer belongs to will be the name there) to exactly what your iPod is called on your iTunes on your computer that it was originally synced to.  I found that before I did this, it would not sync.
9.  When you hit Sync, be patient because it took a minute or so before it actually began to sync.  Then, it will be another few hours if you have as much music as I did for the sync to complete and depending on the speed of the computer you're using.
That's how I got all my music back and I am now a happy camper/listener again.,
I called Apple support and they were absolutely no help.  Just told me I would have to re-sync to my iTunes even though I kept telling them that was 1,650 miles away at my house and not going to be possible.  I even asked if the above process would work and they said they didn't know but "You could try it....." :-(  At that time, I didn't have access to a computer with enough hard disc space on it yet so I called the Apple store in Louisville, KY which was 65 miles from where I was hoping that they might be able to help.  After 2 calls and getting hung up in the same loop of menus that left me on hold for over 20 minutes long distance, I gave up and concluded that Apple and Support are two mutually exclusive terms and have no relationship to one another. This has been quite a nightmare, and if anything good has come of it aside from having my music back, it might be the learning process but I really feel that is a rather small reward for the time spent!
Not likely to be an Apple fan when considering my next purchase of home computer, laptop, nor the phone I am preparing to buy.
Hope this has helped someone.

I never throw anything away up to a point when it has become silly and then I have a cull. (This applies to the loft, the garage and the hard disk)
I always have (at least) two backups to external drives and by the end of a project also have a full backup to DVD.
I am a hobby photographer, so this isn't necessarily a good professional workflow!
I store work in progress within a folder structure that identifies just what it is, final folder being date stamped for the start date (eg D:\My Pictures\Photgraph Album Master\Family\Bob\20100715 Farnborough airshow)
Photographs of value are then kept within the folder with a date stamp and version number if they change within a day (eg 20100823 Alexander in cockpit 2).
Photographs I haven't touched remain with their camera-specified name.
Lightroom, which I use, doesn't know about external drives or DVD backups. (Maybe it should, but it would become confusing)

  • How do I get 'all' my audio books into the Audiobook folder?

Hi, I'm an iTunes newbie (new touch) and am trying to get to grips with some of the quirks of iTunes.
I have some audio books I purchased from Audible.co.uk and when imported into iTunes these go into the Audiobooks folder in the iTunes Library.
However, I also have several audio books I have converted from CD's into MP3. When I import these into iTunes, they always end up in the music folder of the Library. No amount of dragging and dropping or searching of the 'preferences' have allowed me to move these files into the Audiobook folder. Can this be done in iTunes?
    Any help greatly received.
    Regards,
    Glenn

If you are going to do it this way, I would suggest a SmartPlaylist.
Highlight all of your audiobooks, go to file, then get info. Now, pick a section to edit (Comments, grouping or genre are the best choices) and enter a tag such as "Audiobook".
Now, create a SmartPlaylist to only show anything with that particular tag.
For example, "Genre contains audiobook". Only files with Audiobook will show up.
Forgive me if you knew how to do this, but I figured as a new user this might be helpful.

  • How do you move changes from your project developments into the maintenance development system?

    Good day colleagues.
We are in the process of introducing retrofit, and the picture is clear for us, generally speaking, to retrofit the project landscape with the changes done in the maintenance landscape.
What about the other way around? We mean, when the project is set to Go Live, we understand the transports will be all added, e.g. to the Production System buffer to be moved there via Maintenance Cycle, based on the way we defined the project and the logical component being used.
However, how do you feed those project transports to your Maintenance Development System using ChaRM?  or do you do that Manually?  We doubt. Copying Production back into Development?  no way !!!
How do you establish that?  We have a sort of idea but the documents about retrofit only seem to talk about moving transports one way, as far as we have found.
    Many thanks for any feedback.

    Hi Piyush.
I apologize for a late close on this questioning about moving projects back into the maintenance stream.
Basically there are 2 solutions as far as we know:
    1. What Vivek mentions, which is performing a cutover and repacking the project transports into 2 transports in the maintenance stream:  A workbench and a customizing.   In that sense, at the end of the day you end up moving just 2 transports to the maintenance stream up to Production.   They contain all your project objects.  Thanks to Vivek, again.
This is a very practical and interesting approach.  The only reason we did not adopt it, is based on the fact that if by any chance we encounter an issue with a project transport object in the maintenance stream (Dev or QA), now that all is bundled together, we may be stuck right at the time weare getting ready to GoLive.  How tough is going to be that issue? how easy and quick to fix?how much would that affect the whole project time frame?   Those questions made us decide to option 2.
    2.  What we are doing is that at cutover we move at the same time all project transports to the transport buffer of each of the maintenance stream systems (Dev, QA, and Prod).   We first open the gate to move the transports to Dev and we test, then to QA and we test, as well.  If there may be an issue, and the issue can not be quickly resolved by the project team, we can go up to the extreme of using a new feature introduced in ChaRM in SP10, if we are not wrong, but definitely available in SP12.  That feature provides a way to selectively decide which transports of the release are to Go Live and which ones do not, although we have no had to use that feature, yet, but it is there.
We do not see any risk on adding the transports to the maintenance buffers at the same time.  There are ways to control the systems that are open for receiving transports, and the project phases, which guarantees no room for error.  There have to be deliberate actions taken (more than one in our case), to wrongly move a project to GoLive before its time comes.
That is more or less the scenario Piyush.
Hope that explains the scenario.  So far no decision on really publishing as a blog.  It seems not to be written on stone, as consulting with different companies, each adds its own flavor to the recipe and shuffle ideas to get to what they are looking for and makes them happy.

  • What do you use to directly plug music equip. into Macbook?

Iv done searches for firewire 2 or 4 channel interfaces. I have some prospects, but just looking for opinions and insight. Any specific products/brands? All im doing is acoustic guitar/keyboard and vocal recordings for my own benefit. So nothing elaborate is needed. The MacBook built-in mic just isnt cutting it for me. Thanks guys.

You can't go wrong with any of those choice, you jsut need to figure out your final needs, and pick one.
In the two channel category, on the low end I lean towards the Tascam unit, on the high end I lean towards the Inspire.
I've used both the iMic and the FirePod, and worked with someone that used the Tascam 122, all worked great for their intended purpose (the iMic being on the LOW low end, but still useful)

  • How can I get all my music files into my itunes folder?

I have tons of music scattered all over my computer in different locations, I want to put all the music in my itunes folder- C:\Documents and Settings\David\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music
The problem is, is when I move the music to my itunes folder the music I move does not play in itunes. So how can I do this
    Thanks

Don't move files manually! That indeed causes iTunes to lose track. Use the command Advanced > Consolidate Library. Before you begin, read up on Consoidate in the Help file so you understand what it does.
When you are done consolidating, you can delete the extras if you wish.

  • Upgrading OS - How do I get all my music back into reinstalled iTunes?

Hi. We are upgrading my operating system from Windows 2000 to XP on my computer that currently runs iTunes. I have my entire iTunes folder backed up on another computer. I know I'll probably have to reinstall iTunes after the OS is upgraded. But how do I add all that music back into the new version of iTunes? We won't be replacing the hard drive, so all that music should still be on the same computer.
When I reinstall iTunes, will it automatically add the music back, or will I have to do that manually? If so, how do I do it? Just go to the "Add a folder" option in iTunes and add the entire iTunes folder? If I do that, my playlists should be restored since I have the .itl file in that folder, right?
    This is so confusing.

    Install iTunes.
Copy the backed up iTunes folder into My Documents/My Music.

The sort fields should generally be empty unless you've putting in custom values to sort solo artists by their surnames. You can apply common changes to thousands of tracks at once, just don't apply the wrong change because there is no undo.
It is a good idea to backup before undertaking large scale changes. See this backup tip for a suggested approach.

Can you save your itunes and songs onto an external hard drive so that incase your computer crashes you will still have all your music?

The procedures below are for "moving" your library but as long as you don't delete it from your internal drive you are basically backing up.
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Simple answer:  Copy your whole iTunes folder to the external drive.  For subsequent backups you might want to learn about cloning and using a tool that only does incremental backups of recently changed items rather than copying all your files each time.

  • Is there a way that you can keep the same checked songs when transefering all your music to a different computer?

ive just got a new computer and installed ITunes. ive brought all my music across from the old computer but when ive added it to I tunes it has checked all the songs. is there a way you can uncheck all the songs you don't want (same as previous computer) or do you have to go through and manually uncheck all the songs you don't want on the I pod??

When you copied the music from your old computer you should have included the iTunes database (iTunes Library.itl) as well as your media files - this is the structure (normally in C:\Users\username\Music) that you should copy from old to new:
If you only copied the media, and not the database file, try doing so now (without iTunes running) - the files and folder structures should be the same on your new PC as on your old one.
Then hold down SHIFT while starting iTunes; you'll get this prompt:
Click on Choose Library..., then browse to and select the iTunes Library.itl file that you just copied.  Your library should now be in the state that it was on your old machine, including checked selections.
By the way, using checkboxes against individual songs is a really inefficient way to manage how content is synced to an iDevice.  Its much easier to create a playlist that you can move songs/albums in and out of, and configure your iDevice to sync media from this playlist.

  • Hi All, I have been using the adobe CS 5.1. What do you recommend upgrade my CS? or get the subscription on a yearly basis, thanks in advance for your input here,

hi All, I have been using the adobe CS 5.1. What do you recommend upgrade my CS? or get the subscription on a yearly basis, thanks in advance for your input here

The decision is ultimately yours.  You have to consider your preferences and reasons for use.
If you are using the software primarily for personal projects, then have a suite might be all you need, and the one you have now might suffice for that as well.  If you are a professional who needs to be on the cutting edge, then you probably want to have the subscription working for you.
Upgrading to a new CS means getting CS6, which is likely to be that last of the CS releases.  If you do that you pay for it one time and what you get when you pay is what you will have until it becomes obsolete somewhere off in the future, except for any corrective updates that might be provided.  It should hold up to be useful for some number of years.
If you purchase a Cloud plan, you pay for it repeatedly over time - basically a monthly fee -  but you get updates and new features as they are released.  There is always a chance that newer updates could eventually out-spec the machine you own, requiring a hardware update to continue on with new releases.

  • I have updated iTunes on my computer and my iPod nano 4 is up to date but not all music shows up in my iTunes library..only the purchased songs..what happened and how do I get them back into the library?

The music library in the updated version of iTunes is grossly incomplete although the music still remains on my iPod. Why did this happen and how do I get the music back into the library?

    Hi Dalegu219,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your iTunes library is on an external hard drive, but iTunes is not recognizing the library, first make sure the right library is selected.
You can use these steps to make sure iTunes is opening the library on your external drive:
If iTunes is running, quit iTunes.
If you're using Windows, hold down the Shift key and from the Start menu, choose All Programs > iTunes > iTunes.
If you're using a Mac, open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option key.
You should see one of these screens:
Pick Choose Library and locate the library on your external hard drive.
    From:
iTunes: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one - Apple Support
If the right library is selected, but you do not see your songs, try re-creating the library using the instructions found here:
iTunes: How to re-create your iTunes library and playlists - Apple Support
    Best Regards,
    Jeremy
