What Do You Use To Defrag? and what other maintnance on drives?

i was reading in the logic manual about defrag disks. the only things i've done to my disks where run disk permisions, repair disk and also disk warrior. now is there something else that needs to be done to main hard drive, internal audio drive and external samples drive?
if i recall speaking to a mac tech years ago, he said there was no need for defrag disks.
so what should i run on my disks?
thanks

This business about the OS defragging is a red herring. The OS only defrags files under a certain size, and it doesn't try to optimize large fragmented free-space. (If you have a fast well-tuned system and you have large, fast hard drives with lots of free space, you may be lucky so far, and not notice any problems, maybe like the previous poster.) But if you ARE experiencing the symptoms of bad disk fragmentation, then the answer is STILL to defrag. Since using iDefrag monthly, I'm able to use at least 30% more audio tracks in Logic before any problems.
This also depends on your usage, if you're regularly coming close to filling a drive, then deleting tons of stuff to make space, you will have bad fragmentation, whether you've noticed it yet or not.
P.S. Even the OS's limited defrag won't work once the disk is badly fragmented because there will not be any large enough chunks of contiguous free space for it to write large files like its search index. I've often noticed some of these 'finder' files badly defraged, and spotlight searches are faster after proper defagging.

Can you use earphone jack and continue to use blue tooth connection to speakers like bose

    Hi,
I'm a owner of the X-fi Elite Pro, and for me the headphone + speakers settings works very well. Just to be sure, you bought the X-Fi XtremeGamer Falalty Pro Series? and not the XtremeGamer Fatalty Champ Series or even the old regular X-Fi Fatalty? If so, I'm quite sure you need the I/O box with the 6.35 mm (/4 inch) steroe jack. My headphones are connected through the /4 inch jack on the Elite Pro unit and my 5. surround system through the X-Fi card's 3x /8? mini jack.
I guess you have to buy the X-Fi I/O Dri've Upgrade Kit (or the Console Upgrade Kit) to use your headphones and speakes at he same time. I chose the Console because i couldn't li've with a thick and ugly digital cable sticking out in the front of my PC?
    Hope it helped!

my keyboard on macbook pro (laptop) is acting weird. One key is not responding at all. Have verified using Keyboard viewer and some other keys are printing the unresponsive character at random. "z" is the unresponsive character.
Is it a damaged keyboard ?
The laptop is just 2 months old, will Apple replace it with a new one if its indeed a damaged keyboard or just repair, I use it for official purposes so being without a laptop is not much of an option.

No one here works for Apple, so we don't know what Apple might or might not do.  If it's a genuine defect, they will of course repair it under warranty.  It is not their responsibility if it effects your ability to work or not, so that's on you.
If, however, they determine that the key is problematic as a result of your misuse of the laptop, then everything is on you.  And trust me, if they find a glob of dried up beer or coffee there, they will charge you.
Your only choice is to take it in for repair.

Yes you can make multiple backups on one hard drive, for example if you’ve 1TB hard drive installed in your PC and you’ve two Mac Machines with 500GB drive each then you just make two backup images with size of 500GB each.

A: You bet. Attached find a text file with some code from the example I showed

So you are saying that the recovery discs I made do include the copy of windows that was originally installed?
Absolutely! They will restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents. Follow the instructions in the section Restoring from recovery DVDs/media, which begins on p. 73 of the User's Guide.

maybe i can make a deal with wd to have them swap this drive out for the BEKT instead...
That would be a good idea in any case.
As I said, the 10-fc12-045d error would not be due to the drive's being AFT, but more likely the discs are not being read properly. New discs can be obtained from Toshiba. Scroll down to Get Recovery Media here

  • Is "RAC" Free if you use "Standard Edition" and not the "Enterprise Edition" Databases?

Hello to All you wonderful Oracle Guru's....Greetings...
I was told to do some research on this, it's quite simple, but it's a question of getting management to buy in the idea of going with Clusters and moving off the nice and secure single instances..
Is RAC FREE if you use "Standard Edition" instead of "Enterprise Edition"...
    Does anyone know?
I am going to do a Proof of Concept RAC install for management\devs\ect and others to review....
    Any Clues???
    Thanks,
    Xevv...

Have a check of this: http://www.oracle.com/us/corporate/pricing/price-lists/index.html
Oracles licensing is predominantly per seat (user) or per CPU. So taking per CPU, you would need to figure out what you need - say you want to license the DB on RAC, you will need a license for Oracle Database Standard Edition (either per user or per CPU) - so only bound per user or per CPU on which the database(s) are running. If you have 2 x servers in a cluster, you will have 2 x installations of Oracle DB, each running on n processor(s)
If you can quantify the number of users (if say an internal application) you can go per seat (say 50 users) but there will always be a minimal user license.
Alternatively you're looking at per CPU. Generally you're speaking of the backend to a system that serves a large volume of users, so rather than license 1000 users, you'll just license the core.
If you take a look at the above, you'll see that Oracle determines processor charges around the number of processors and cores (so some cores might be charged at 0.25 of a processor price). Here's a link to how you can cost processors (some processors with 4 cores will still only be charged as 1 x processor, as Oracle will rate each core at 0.25 of a processor) when calculating price.

  • How can you use one image and edit it three different ways to export later?

I am a new Lightroom 3 user.  How can use the same image and edit it multiple ways to produce mulitple images to later export?  For example,  I have a picture of a bride and groom.  I want to use that image and create a color image, a black and white image, and a close up of their hands.

Do I need to do either of those options before I start editing the image at all?  For example,  what if I am working on the image and doing some creative edits.  Then I think of another option that I could do.  Is it too late at that time or can I still get the original image to begin with?

  • HT4818 Can you use both Bootcamp and Parallels with the same Windows 7 installed

I have Parallels installed with Windows 7.  Can I use both Bootcamp and Parallels on the same machine depending on whether I just want to work in Windows all day (Bootcamp) or alternate during the same session (Parallels)?

You can, yes. But there is a complication: once you activate windows it will only be activated for one of the two methods you use. So, let's say you install into boot camp and activate windows. You can then install Parallels and it will find your boot camp installation, but when running in Parallels, Windows will report that it is not activated. Or, you can activate it in Parallels and when running in Boot Camp Windows will report that it is not activated. The reason for this is because Windows thinks it is running on different computers depending on how you boot it. This may not be an issue for you if you run Windows a lot one way and just occasionally the other way, so be sure to activate Windows in whichever method you use more often. Hope this helps!

  • How do you use the bluetooth VIs with a Microsoft Bluetooth Driver?

How do you use the LabVIEW Bluetooth VIs with the Microsoft Bluetooth driver?  I have been trying with no such luck.
I want to use 2 computers to talk to each other using the bluetooth VIs.  Eventually, I think we would like a PDA/phone to talk to a custom built electronics board with Bluetooth.  But for now, I would just like 2 computers to talk and then eventually talk to our own device.
One is a desktop w/ the Belkin F8T012 USB adapter.  It installs fine with the Belkin driver (but I know I need to use the Microsoft Driver in order to use the LabVIEW VIs, but I have tried to get Windows to install its own but it says it is a BCM92045DG-Flash.  It says it cannot install it because it cannot find the necessary hardware.  I thought this USB adapter was on the approved Bluetooth devices list?  What else should I try?  Another Bluetooth USB adapter?
The other computer is a Dell Latitude 820.  It has a built in Bluetooth module which I believe is the Dell 350 Bluetooth Module.  On this machine I have been able to setup a COM port with a bluetooth device (blood glucose meter).  It came with a serial port interface which we modifed to go through a bluetooth interface.  It comes up as COM40. We have been able to communicate to it using their program originally designed to talk through a serial port.  But we would like to use the Bluetooth VIs in LabVIEW.  I can't even use the Discover VI.  Perhaps it is not using the Microsoft Driver as well.  Do I just uninstall the driver and then try to have Windows install its own driver?  Do you have any other recommendations?
    Thanks,
       Javi

    Hi Javi,
This sounds like an issue with Windows and your specific Bluetooth devices.  As you mentioned, the LV Bluetooth VI's do require that the devices use the Windows drivers.  Take a look at this link for specific requirements for using Bluetooth with LabVIEW.  Also, you can take a look at our Developer Zone tutorial on designing Bluetooth applications a found here.  Regarding your device drivers, sometimes it is as easy as uninstalling the driver and then letting Windows discover the device and fine its own driver.  You could check out the Microsoft Knowledgebase for more information.  Thanks and have a great day!

  • CPU is very hot when using Thunderbolt display and mac attached USB hard drive for TimeMachine

    Hello,
i've bought the new MacBook Pro 15" and a Thunderbolt display. Everything works fine for me due to the latest updates, but i experience an issue which i really don't understand. When i connect an usb hard drive for TimeMachine to my display it works like expected (CPU has a temperature of 64°C), but when i connect it to an usb port of the mac while using my display the CPU temperature goes crazy (spikes about 80°C) and it gets very noisy. Has anyone else experienced this behaviour?
May this has something to do with the dual graphics adapter and how the system handles the data stream to thunderbold ports and usb devices? Which graphics card is used for the external display, the internal gpu or the adapter from ati? I've googled a lot but haven't found appropriet answers about these questions.

    Hi there ulairi9!
I understand how this would be a frustrating issue! I have an article here that can provide some troubleshooting steps for you, and can hopefully help you resolve the issue. That article specifically addresses the issue you are experiencing, and can be found here:

  • Are you using a shield *and* a case?

I tried and failed to put my invisible shield on last night (see invisible shield application thread) and today have been looking for a good case to use while I figure out what to do and am wondering - is anyone using a plastic shield and a case? I figure the case protects against shocks and most scratches, while the shield is ultimate scratch protection. But I'm wondering if I get the kind of case it can stay in all the time (hoping for the iSkin evo3 soon) then do I really need a shield?

I got my IPOD video (30GB) just a few weeks ago, when I purchased it, I couldn't find a case for it in the store, so I spent a good amount of time online looking at the different options and searching for the best to work with my IPOD.
I found a case that protects the corners, the click wheel, the front and back of the IPOD. The case fits my IPOD, but isn't too tight, and the IPOD most definately doesn't slide around. The case comes with a wrist strap, as well as a neck lanyard, and also has a belt clip on the back. There are holes in the case for the headphones, hold button and the dock connector.
Also at this website I found a clear protective shield that goes on the front to protect the screen, it fits down the face of the IPOD, and fits inside the case as well.
I purchased both these items for around $30.00, and I must say after some of the reviews I read on the internet about some cases, I believe I've found an excellent case.
You can shop for it here...

they sell leather cases, as well as 'tubes' (which is what I bought, screen protectors (which they call 'full body screen protector'--which I also bought.)

  • Can you use overlapping iTunes and iCloud accounts?

    Apple IDs are fun, yes?
    The situation:
I'm slowly upgrading two (2) Macbook Pros with Mountain Lion, and I've run into the problem of two members of the same household tied to the same Apple ID for iTunes purchases.
I've read all the tech support articles and tutorials for saving the iTunes Apple ID and then adding two (2) more Apple IDs for iOS and Mac OS X iCloud services.
I'm wondering if I can avoid juggling three (3) different Apple IDs by having some overlap.
    Here's the current setup:
    Spouse
    iPhone 4S / iOS 6
iTunes tied to Apple ID #1
    iMessage using phone #
    No iCloud setup
    Macbook Pro 13" / Lion
iTunes tied to Apple ID #1
    No Messages setup
    No iCloud setup
    Me
    iPhone 5 / iOS 6
iTunes tied to Apple ID #1
    iMessage using phone #
    No iCloud setup
Macbook Pro 15" / Mountain Lion
iTunes tied to Apple ID #1
    No Messages setup
    No iCloud setup
My question is -- since Apple ID #1 is technically my email address, can I use it for both the shared iTunes purchases and my iCloud account?
    The revised setup would be:
    Spouse
    iPhone 4S / iOS 6
iTunes tied to Apple ID #1
    iMessage using Apple ID #2
    iCloud using Apple ID #2
    Macbook Pro 13" / Lion
iTunes tied to Apple ID #1
    Messages using Apple ID #2
    iCloud using Apple ID #2
    MeiPhone 5 / iOS 6
iTunes tied to Apple ID #1
    iMessage using Apple ID #1
    iCloud using Apple ID #1
Macbook Pro 15" / Mountain Lion
iTunes tied to Apple ID #1
    Messages using Apple ID #1
    iCloud using Apple ID #1
If it's easier just to create Apple ID #2 and Apple ID #3 for iCloud and messaging stuff, let me know. I'd prefer to keep it simple, though.
    Thanks,

If I decide later to initialize a third (3rd) Apple ID for my own iCloud materials, how does that effect my iMessage (iOS) and Messages (OS X) history / experience?  I guess that would have other implications for any data stored in iCloud on what we've been calling Apple ID #1, wouldn't it? Beyond just the messaging components?
