What does restoring mean?
If you haven't backed up your information on iCloud or anywhere for that matter, does "restoring your phone" basically mean you will never see your pictures, contacts, calendars, and texts again?
(Additional info- I can't back up my phone now. It's too late. I did a software update and it went wrong--have to plug my phone into iTunes because it won't work and the thing that shows it needs to be connected is displayed. The only option is to restore my phone...am I screwed?
See my reply in your other thread.

What does restore mean?! iam in need of serious help!!!
i was trying to put ubuntu on boot camp, but the disk was dirty, so i cold shut down. then when i tried to restore my disk to a single partition, it said:
*The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition.*
Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again.
help me please! will restoring it erase all of my stuff? and first off, how do i restore it in the first place?!Hi and welcome to Discussions,
usually the best way to remove the made Windows or Linux partition is to use the BootCamp Assistant again which should give you the option to remove the made Windows partition and revert back to one OSX volume.
After that's done a reboot of your Mac might be advisable. After the reboot use the BootCamp Assistant again to make the Windows partition and then install the (hopefully correct) version of Windows.
Only if that's not working (whatever the reason) :
1) boot your Mac from your OSX install DVD
2) choose your language and then 'ignore' (cancel) the installation
3) from the Top Menu (Utilities) start Disk Utility (DU)
4) in DU click on your harddisk (not any partition) in the left pane (the first item listed)
5) in the right pane use the 'Partition'-Tab
6) click to highlight on the ex-Windows partition you want to delete
7) click on the small '-' Button at the bottom
That should delete your former Windows partition
After that's done successfully
8) Drag the partition separator line until it encompasses the entire drive and then select apply.
9) Quit Disk Utility
10) reboot your Mac from your harddisk.
Since you are 'fumbling' with your OSX partition you should consider having/making a backup of it before trying the a.m. procedure. Just in case.
Restore is the 'counterpart' to a backup meaning that the informations (files, folder, settings) you saved during the backup onto an external harddisk are copied back onto your internal harddisk during the restore.
(Which of course would erase the stuff that is on your internal harddisk at that moment).
Hope it helps

iTunes. After backing iPod to computer and installing new software, what does "restore iPod" mean? Does it mean to restore all games and data to the new software or does it mean to "undo" the software update?
You can restore your iPod to "New" which will erase every thing and install fresh iOS software or you can restore to a particular backup that you have previously created. In this case, your iPod Apps & data will appear as per the backup. Note that some content is not in a backup and will need to be synced back to the iPad from the iTunes music library or from, for example, the iPhoto photo library.

How do I back up the music and apps etc. I restored my computer and I reinstalled iTunes, I was told something about a terminal command line, what does that mean? Please help
- Transfer iTunes purchases to the computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
- Transfer any other music by using a third-party program like one of those discussed here:
Copy music
- Connect the iPod to the computer and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
- Restore the iPod from that backup. The restore will also update the iOS.
Note that the backup that iTunes makes does not include synced media like apps and music
Are you sure you have a 3G iPod? A 1G iPod can only go to iOS 3.1.3

HT1766 what does restor back up means/what does it do
what does restor back up mean?/what does it do
it stores all the data on your device in another place so that you can restore from it if a problem happens (say your device crashes or gets erased). then all your data is restored to your iPhone/iPod/iPad/Mac.

Im getting a message that says the ipad cant be restored because the requested resource was not found. what does this mean?
Hi timtim89,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
You may need to restore your iPhone after placing it in recovery mode. See this article for the steps:
iOS: Unable to update or restore

What does it mean when my ipad is in Recovery mode? It's connected to my imac for software update and it says I must "restore" the ipad before itunes can be used. Will I lose everything on my ipad?
Unless you have a backup from which you can restore, yes you will lose all of your data and settings.
You should be able to sync your content back to the iPad if you have been syncing with iTunes all along. If you don't sync with iTunes, you can download much of your paid content again for free as long as you use the same Apple ID. This explains downloading past purchases.

Unfortunately, at this point, you must restore the device before you can move on. There is nothing you can do to avoid it now. -

I had to get a new ipod....they said I just needed to plug it in and sync to my itunes.. I get an error 1413 when I try to follow the instructions to restore. I can't find any information on error 1413, what does this mean?
Now it keeps saying that it is restored but there is still no music or video on it. And a new error is coming up that says "We could not complete your iTunes store request. The iTunes Store is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later."

I just recently returned an IPad air and exchanged it for another. I first set up this new one as a new IPad but then deleted all content and settings right away (since I wasn't getting the progress I had made in apps and games) in order to restore it from my previous IPad Air. I then checked after on how to backup via icloud and saw this line under the subtitle of how to restore from a backup, "For best battery performance, leave your device connected to a power source until the restore is complete." What does Apple mean by "for best battery performance"? Im just a bit worried of issues.
p.s. And yes I did have it connected to the power. And the ios is the default ios for new IPad Airs.Welcome to the Apple Community.
It only means you should restore whilst it is connected to a power supply, so that your battery doesn't go flat during the process. -
Apple Mobile Device Service not activated ------ What does that mean?? How can I fix it or activate it???? Already completed a restore in itunes.

Just restored and updated my ipod and now when I connect it to my computer I get a message saying "this ipod cannot be used because the Apple Mobile Device service is not started" what does this mean?

I am trying to restore my ipod, and get a message: "could not restore ipod because it could not be unmounted." What does this mean? And what do I do about it?
It sounds like your PC or Mac's internal HD is full. You need to delete some data or move it to an external hard drive or storage device of some sort before you'll be able to successfully complete the restore.
