  • Anyone know what this error means/how to fix it?:  An error occurred while restoring this iPhone (-50).

My sister-in-law wanted the new Operating System for the IPhone 4, and i plugged her phone into MY macbook in order to do this.   Before I updated the operating system, I synced her phone (at least I thought) to my computer.   It went through the whole process, transferred her purchases and everything.   But once I updated the operating system, it gave me the error message "An error occurred while restoring this iPhone (-50)." right at the end.   Then her photos, videos, and contacts were all gone.   Could these possibly still be on my computer somehow and I just can't see them?  I don't want her to lose all of her stuff.   Thanks.

Normally you would be able to do a Restore from Backup in iTunes, but since no backups are saved in YOUR iTunes, you're out of luck.

  • IOS 5 seems to work, but when I connect the ipad to my macbook, i get the message that itunes was interrupted when restoring. I try to restore again and I get the message "An error occurred while restoring this iPad (-50)." What should I do?

iOS 5 seems to work on my ipad, but apparently something went wrong when restoring. I lost music and movies, and when I connect the ipad to my macbook, I get the message that itunes was interrupted when restoring. I try to restore again and I get the message "An error occurred while restoring this iPad (-50)." What happened and what should I do?

I have had the same issue since day 1 of the ios5 installation.  I always hit "Cancel" and then the iPad eventually shows up again in iTunes.  Then a few hours later, I get the same message again.  Annoying, but I've not found a way around it.

Error -1 is not mentioned in this article about error messages during a restore process: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694
    This one comes close:
The device could not be restored. An internal error occurred, or Error 3200: This indicates a network-connectivity or traffic issue. If you see this error, wait an hour or more and try again.

  • HT201413 An error occurred while restoring this iPhone (-36)

I upaded my Iphone 3GS IOS from 4 to 6 with automatically backup from itune, but after that, the iphone could not restore any more, all my date lost.
it shows "An error occurred while restoring this iPhone (-36)", it tells that the iphone does not have enough space for restore.
I did on my iphone 4 without any problem.

I found this in another thread
+Have you tried to put the phone into Emergency Recovery Mode? Warning! All personal data will be erased and will have to be restored from a prior sync!+
+You can put your iPhone into Emergency Recovery Mode by turning the phone off. Now, don't turn it on just yet. Plug the USB nine-pin connector into the bottom of the iPhone but not connected to your computer's USB port. Now, press and hold the Home button (the big round button at the bottom) while you are plugging in the USB cable into the computer's USB port. The phone will appear to be starting but what is going to be different is that you will only see a black screen with a picture of the USB cable and the iTunes program icon. Now you are in Emergency Recovery Mode. Start iTunes and it will detect an iPhone in recovery mode and then tell it to restore the phone.+
+This will correct 99% of all firmware/OS upgrade issues on the iPhone since you're basically starting from scratch.+

  • Updated iPad 1 to IOS 5. When trying to restore my iPad from my backup it gets half way through and the iPad reboots and iTunes says "An error occurred while restoring this iPad (-1)"

Updated iPad 1 to IOS 5. When trying to restore my iPad from my backup it gets half way through and the iPad reboots and iTunes says "An error occurred while restoring this iPad (-1)"
I have tried to restore my contacts and company data at least 20 times and every time half way through THE iPAD REBOOTS! When it boots back up it is at the brand new iPad screen.
This makes me angry as I do not use the iPad for fun and games. I use it for business. My company data and records for the last year are gone. ALL of my out standing customer invoices are gone. ALL payments received are gone! ALL Business contacts and emails ARE GONE! All my company, personal email accounts and settings ARE GONE!
What am I supposed to do now? In 6 hours I have to get on the road and conduct business with a empty blank factory out of the box iPad. How am I supposed to know who owes me money or who has paid their bills Apple? All of my meetings and calendar dates are GONE!
Everything was supposed to be backed up and restored after the update!
Question???WHY DID YOU MAKE THIS UPDATE WIPE OUT ALL SETTINGS AND APPS ON THE iPAD??? All the other updates left everything on the iPad intact and ONLY upgraded the IOS,and when it was done everything was still there.
Yes! I have done everything. Rebooted computer, checked for updates, Hard booted iPad, Factory restored iPad to ios 5 twice, tried every usb port I have, unplugged all other usb components.
Everytime half way through "Restoring iPad from backup..." The iPad turns off shows a spinning circle then shows the Apple logo and takes me to the brand new iPad setup screen.
Apple, you have no idea the level of stress you have created today.....

Check the console app to see if there are any error messages. I had one app showing an issue (Pet Hotel) the error was (truncated):
    ERROR: Restore message response: 102 rename error: File name too long (63) at path "/var/mobile/Library/SafeHarbor/com.pocketgems.tappethotel/Container/Documents/ savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHis tory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGa meHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/sa vedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHisto ry/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGame History/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/save dGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory /savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHi story/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedG ameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/s avedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHistory/savedGameHist ory/savedGameHistory/1313349538-pocket_gems_crash_report.txt" (MBErrorDomain/102)
I manually snyc'ed that particular app and then re-ran the restore and am now the proud owner of a working iphone. Not sure it is the same problem or app but looking in the console was the key!

  • IPhone 4 error while updating to iOS 5 - An error occurred while restoring this iPhone (-35).

After taking over an hour to backup and restore my iPhone to iOS 5 iTunes gave me that error:
An error occurred while restoring this iPhone (-35).
    Anyone know what this is?
None of my apps have been restored, or settings.

Try it again. Or un plug and try again.
Sometimes I have found if the server is busy it will not verify the phone and you start to loose things. If a back up was done before upgrade you will not have lost stuff.

  • During iOS 5 update&restore, I got this error message "An error occurred while restoring this iPhone (-50)".

After backing up, iTune was restoring and it showed the error message "An error occurred while restoring this iPhone (-50)".
I have two iPhones; iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS.
I successfully upgraded my iPhone4 to iOS 5 with iTune on my Window XP. Everything works well.
So, I tried to upgrade my iPhone 3GS as well (with the same iTune on the same computer). After backing up,
iTune was restoring and it showed the error message "An error occurred while restoring this iPhone (-50)".
I tried to unplug and plug the iPhone. but iTune showed the same error when I click "contrinue restore" button.
I think backup file would still exist on my computer and I want to restore them all.
Please help me to fix the problem.

  • IOS5 Update - An error occurred while restoring this iPad (-1)

    Hi,
I'm trying to upgrade my iPhones and iPad. My iPhone 4 update went well, but I can't get my iPad to restore afer upgrade.  I keep getting the iTunes message "An error occoured while restoring this iPad (-1)". This happens after the restore is about half done. I did retry a few times, but without success.
After confirming the first error iTunes shows "iTunes was interruped while restoring the content of the iPad "...". Would you like to restore this iPad again now?" and is offering to restart or to delete the backup.
The iPad still boots up and does not seem bricked, but I fear all apps and other data is gone. However, I did do a successful "transfer all purchases" just before the iOS update and i have backups of my musik and pictures.
Does anyone know whats going on and how to resolve this without late surprises?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Gerhard

    I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM!
But my iPad is completely bricked. I had previously updated my iPhone 4.
I went to the Apple Store last night and they informed me that the firmware in the update might have affected the hardware. Being that my warranty had run out 100 days ago they couldn't help me. I couldn't believe they were telling me this. Naturally if I had known the update would have destroyed my iPad, I wouldn't have installed it.
I think they are handling this update on older iPads awfully.

  • An error occurred while restoring this iPhone (-20)

come on really.....i back up all my data then it gives me this error...and apple wants to charge me to discuss a solution

When I tried to restore the backup performed on iOS 5.0 to iOS 5.0.1 I had the error "iTunes could not restore the iPhone "xxxx's iPhone" because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the iPhone that is being restored".
I was able to see the list of available backups in iTunes when I "right click" on my device name on the navigation window of iTunes and choose "Restore from Backup...". But when I try to restore the backup, I encountred abote problem.
After spending hours researching and following various threats, finally I managed to restore my backup.
Using below steps, I managed to restore:
Launch iTunes, Connect the iPhone to the PC and ensure the device is detected.
See the list of available backups in iTunes when I "right click" on my device name on the navigation window of iTunes and choose "Restore from Backup...". Ensure the backup you want to restore is listed. But do not proceed to restore. This step is to ensure your backup is available.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the screen goes blank.
Continue to hold the Home button, but release the Power button.
Hold the home button until the message "iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovry mode. You must restart this iPhone to before it can be used with iTunes" pops up in iTunes.
Click on restore button which restores the basic OS. Since you have the previously downloaded iOS on your PC, it restores the last version you had.
Then "right click" on my device name on the navigation window of iTunes and choose "Restore from Backup..." and choose your backup.
This restore the backup without the above error.
During the above process, your device may reboot few times. This is normal.
    Hope this helps!

  • An error occurred while restoring this iPhone (-402620395)

I upgraded my iPhone 3G to iOS 4 yesterday. It took awhile but everything seemed to work okay, with this one exception, that being the restoration error above. I'm an iPhone developer, but haven't had time to do much since early this year. I had created an adaptation to the LocateMe sample app, which I had added to the phone. Looking through the console seen via iPhone Configuration Utility, I see these lines:
    Tue Jun 22 08:28:14 unknown SpringBoard[40] <Notice>: MultitouchHID(2290c0) device bootloaded
    Tue Jun 22 08:28:17 unknown installd[959] <Error>: profile not valid: 0xe8008011

So, it seems unpleasantly obvious that something is missing somewhere. It may be exacerbated by the fact that the provisioning profile for that app has expired. Note also that there is no executable at the tmp/var/yadda yadda path. Does anyone have a clue as to how to eliminate the error? Thanks.

I'm having precisely this same issue, although I see it when trying to run an app on the device by launching from xcode.
