What DVD External Drive do I need

Hello
I want to upgrade my vs. 10.2.28 to 10.4 but I only have a CD drive. Can someone send me a link for a brand/model or tell me exactly what type of external DVD firmware drive I need to get so that I can install 10.4 on my system. Thank you!

Hi,
You can try to get your hands on a CD-version of the Tiger installation. Your drive should be able to install it:

Using an external drive is an option. I guess most of the Firewire drives would work. I haven't tried it ever myself though (Maybe you could barrow one from a friend to try it?).
If you have another Mac with DVD-drive, you should be able to install it through Target Disk Mode. (maybe you could barrow another mac )

What external drive do you suggest purchasing to read discs

Assuming you are referring to a late 2012 or 2013 iMac that does not included a DVD drive. Almost any external USB DVD drive will work, Apple offers the external SuperDrive however there are a multitude of alternatives. If you choose to use Apple's solution, in the US online store it is availalble:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD564ZM/A/apple-usb-superdrive?fnode=5f
If you have a Mac or PC with a DVD drive that is on the same network as your iMac you can also use Remote Disc which Apple explains in the DVD or CD sharing: Using Remote Disc article located at:

  • What DVD-R drives are supported by DVD SP 4

I have DVD Studio 4 and want to burn right from that program. How can I find a burner that is supported by dvd studio pro? Or do I have to use toast at the point that I decide to use an external dvd burner?

I did go to the site you suggested and there is nothing that I can see or find regarding this topic. There is an extensive database of hard drives that are compatible with OS platforms, but not external DVD burners that are compatible with DVD Studio Pro. I need to purchase a large quantity of external DVD burners to work with DVD Studio Pro for a school and I don't want to have to also buy Toast, or use some work around. I'd like to find a list of supported drives that work with the program. I've looked everywhere, in the DVD Studio Pro manual, online, in forums groups and FAQs. I've looked at manufacturer's websites and all over Apple's site...nope nadda nothing. If you have a direct link to something please forward it on.
If DVD Studio Pro advertises that it works with DVD burners than Apple needs to list at least a few DVD burners that are compatible. I'm not talking comprehesive list, I'm talking 2 or 3 that are known to work would at least give me something to start with, then I can contact that manufacturer for more details.
Any folks out there currently using a burner that works from within DVD Studio Pro?
    Thanks!

  • Trouble booting off DVD/external drive. wierd boot screen

My new iBook G4 has been working fine by itself.
I have an older external firewire drive and when I try to use that as the startup drive, it seems to boot up fine but the cursor remains frozen in the top left corner. The keyboard seems to work fine. (I haven't been able to get keyboard commands to drive the menus. That's another problem I guess).
I can run the original install disk and I can run the hardware diagnostics on it. All is fine.
Then I tried to reinstall Tiger on the external hard drive using the install DVD that came with our family pack.
When I run the installer on my new iBook G4 and the computer restarts, the screen that comes up after the gray Apple logo and spinning gear is a blue border and white rectangle with graphics showing what look like a two-step process, numbered 1 and 2 at the bottom. The graphic depicts an oval shape with what looks like a cover removed and two AA-type battery icons linked to the graphic. The picture is much the same for each step with differences the communnicate the idea of inserting or replacing. The second step has a small blinking red circle, like a screw head.
I have no control over the arrow cursor in the top-left of my screen. No action I can perform onscreen from the keyboard.
    What is this screen?
I tried resetting PRAM, went into Open Firmware to reset NVRAM and all.
No devices are attached and it still does this. I don't use a wireless mouse, which is sort of what the oval shape reminds me of. Given the frozen cursor in both cases, it makes me think there's something going on with the information it's getting about what pointing device is being used.
The DVD runs fine on other computers and is right now completing the installation I was trying to do, using a Powerbook G4.

Thanks. Makes sense. I'll try that. I had checked the drive firmware with the most recent LaCie updater. So I didn't think it was the drive.
I did manage to use the keyboard shortcuts to open the Keyboard Preference Pane while booted off of the external drive. I enjoyed learning how useful it is to type the beginning of search terms (like "trac") into the Search box and use the menu of matches returned to navigate by Mouse to the Trackpad pane, only to be told that the Trackpad Tab wasn't loaded because my iBook doesn't have one (wrong). It had loaded only the Mouse tab.
Learning a few new tidbits today. Thank you very much.

  • Are the FC Events and capture scratch the same thing? Also, how big of an external drive do you need if you plan on making lots of 3-5 min movies?

Are the FCP Events Folder and the capture scratch the same thing? If not, what is the difference?
I've set the events folder and the projects folder to an external drive (400 GB) but it's filling up quickly. What are appropriate external drive sizes?

FCP X Events folders are the same as the old FCE/FCP Capture Scratch folders.
There is no "appropriate" size as everyone is different.
I have a friend who finds the 80GB drive on his 2004 iMac more than sufficient!
Other people can use hundreds of gigabytes a day.
So it all sepends on your particular usage and the only answer is get one as big as you can.
The reason FCP X fills up HDs so quickly is because it usually converts footage to ProRes 422 which uses about 50GB per hour of video.
Whenever you render the footage it is done in ProRes 422 so the drive space is incredibly rapidly eaten away.

  • What Size External Drive?

Have 5 Macs and am getting 3 new ones (retiring two of the old PPCs to the kids - can't run Leopard). Will update the 3 Intels with Leopard, and the new ones will come with it installed. I have external backups for the existing computers (my rule of thumb has been get twice the storage, so for example, for the 80 G iBook I have a 160 external). Anyway, is there a "rule of thumb" as to what size external one should have for Time Machine? Since it is constantly backing up I suppose the external size will/could eventually exceed the internal capacity. So, for a 160 G, (or any other size drive) is there a "multiplier" of sorts one should use for the size of the external drive? I'd like to have the externals on hand when I update the existing computers and when I get the new ones and 1st turn them on.
    Any insight is most appreciated!

The rule of thumb I have been hearing is >= 1.01 * the total capacity of volumes being backed up. Of course, the bigger the better.
In English, thats an eternal drive that is a tad bit bigger than the drive (or drives) you are backing up.
This way, in a situation where you have completely filled up the volume(s) being backed up, you can be sure that you will at the very least have a complete backup of your entire system in its most recent state. Sure, TM will have erased older backups, but in the event of a catastrophic failure, you will at least be able to restore all your current files.
Of course if you can afford it, get the biggest drive possible.
Re: backups over X months old... there is no current way to do this that I know of, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a hack to TM prefs file soon. Hopefully just a one line "write" in terminal.

  • If i partition an external drive do i need to erase it?

    Hi,
I partitioned an external drive without erasing it first.
Do I need to erase it now that it has been partitioned?
    I don't think so.

When you partition a drive all data will be lost whether you erase it or not

  • Buying External Drive that Only Needs One USB Port?

The optical drive on my 2007 MacBook Pro has been dead for about 6 months. I need to get an external one so I can install some software, but I am having trouble finding one that only uses one USB port, as there is only one on each side of my notebook. I went to Best Buy today, and the only one they had that is compatible with a Mac needs two side-by-side USB ports.
Does anyone know of any good Mac compatible external drives that only require one USB port? I am interested in purchasing one by LaCie, but their site does not specify how many USBs it requires.
Any advice you can give me will be greatly appreciated!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You might want to consider a FireWire powered optical drive:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/optical-drives/
A FireWire port will deliver more power, so you would only need to use one FW port. The people at OWC are very Mac knowledgeable and could help you to pick one out. Your 2007 MBP should have both FW400 and FW800, so you could use either port.
    Good luck!

  • What update or driver do I need to install airport express to MacBookPro?

I own a Powerbook G4 and just recently bought a MacBookPro. I bought an airport extreme with my powerbook 2 years ago. So the software that came with the express is a bit dated. Which update or driver do I need for it to work on my new computer?
    MacBookPro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Also own a PowerbookG4

Hello Chefooh, and welcome to discussions.
If you have purchased an airport extreme wth your powerbook several years ago, i would suggest running software update to bring your G4 up to date. the most recent release of airport is v4.2, found here-
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airport42formacosx1042.html
For mac OS X Tiger, or for Panther, here-
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airport42formacosx1033.html
The macbook Pro comes with Airport(and bluetooth) built in, and since you have 10.4.6 installed, i would think you are up to date there. However, a quick check of the software update will confirm this for you.
Best of luck, and hope it all goes smoothly.

  • External drive crash.. need to export from ipod to itunes

    hi,
I was storing my itunes library for an ipod touch on an external drive due to space issue. This external drive crashed this yeek and I would like to restore all my music on itunes by exporting my current ipod library to itunes.
    Can i do that? how?
    Thanks a lot!

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from an iPod. A few are advertised as iPod Touch compatible, here are some you can begin your research with:
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)

  • Where can i get a cheat and good cd/dvd external drive?

my ibook doesnt have a cd/dvd driver to burn dvds or cds, it can play cds and copy them but not burn them or even play dvd. so i want to buy an external cd/dvd drive using an usb. where can i get one. do you think this one might work? or i need a real superdrive?

    Here's a good source: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/optical-drives/
I would recommend a Firewire connection rather than USB. Firewire is faster.

  • External drive help! Need a hardware wizard!

    Hello,
I have a brand new 500GB external that tipped over while it was spinning. It got ruined with about 350GB of info on it. I have in the past used Drive saver and spent over $800 to retreive info on a 250GB drive, and this time I was not about to shell out the $1200bucks they want to retreivefrom the 500GB.
I am aware that the following will void my warranty.
I posted in the past here, and someone talked to me about replacing the plates from one drives to another. I opened the damaged drive and noticed the reading arm had skipped off the hard disk plates, and that the disk edges were damaged. The poster, suggested that the reading arm could be damaged. I figured that I'm willing to buy a new drive for $140 (same as the other one) and risk the $140 and attempt to replace the 3 plates from the inside the damaged drive to the inside of the new drive.
Well it could not read it and got the error message that the drive could not be read and did I want to initialize it. I clicked yes, and used disk utility to initialize it, and got error message :"Disk erase failed input/output error". Although the icon of the drive appears in disk utility, it reads next to it" 2.0TB DMI" it is a 500GB.
So now I am left with what I feared, is 2 X 500GB not recognized by the computer and not initializeable.
Anyone knows a magic approach to this hardware problem? With technologies becoming available to the common "mortal" out there, is there something out there I could use to get my drives back to normal.... Maybe I could buy a $300 piece of hardware even if it was $500... it would be cheaper that using Drive saver. .... How does Drive saver do it?
Do the 3 plates have to be alligned in a certain way to be operational?
    I need Magic Tom!

Over in another forum (can't remember which) a color expert was saying that if you want to be able to accurately calibrate an LED-backlit display, make sure you get a calibrator that's a spectrophotometer like the ColorMunki, instead of the colorimeter that's inside most inexpensive calibrators.

  • New External Drive .. NEED HELP PLZ

    Hi
i just plugin (usig USB) my new external hard drive ( 160 GB )
and i`m trying to copy some files to it
    and it shows this msg
" the item ... could not be moved because new volume cannot be modified "
so how can i make it ? and also it shows the new volume for read only .. how can i make it read and wirte ??
    thnx

Yes, I think so. You can create as many partitions as you like - if you look at that document, the second part shows how to partiton the drive into several partitions - just do it as shown but format one of them FAT32 or NTFS
    But....
I don't know if a PC can read a single Fat32 or NTFS partition from a drive partitioned using GUID. I think it would have to be Master Boot Record Scheme in which case, you would need Fat 32 all the way.
As you have to wipe the drive anyway, it won't hurt to try I suppose. In the worst case you can always reformat it back to OSX only or Fat 32 so that the PC and Mac can read it (NTFS if you only need the mac to be able to read it).
From a performance perspective I'd use two drives. To swap data between a pc and mac just network them rather than trying to make one drive do two jobs.
    I hope that helps,
    best of luck.

  • What dvd/writer drives will boot on a b&w

Running panther 10.3.9/512Meg/G4 450 . I want to boot to install dvds(tiger), I tried my nec, it reads fine but will not boot, what is the rom set for?

    hi ibm,
My B&W boots perfectly from a Pioneer DVR 109 and as these are basically Superdrives, you should be ok with their latest incarnation the 110. Take a look on this site for further help and advice
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/index.html
You could also try the media exchange programme at Apple whereby they will exchange your Tiger DVD discs for CDs. (if you have a functioning compatible CD drive that is)
Hope it helps (you'll probably find that the NEC won't boot)

  • What size external HDD do you need for TM?

I have a new 500gb drive in my iMac, do I need a 1TB external HDD for TM to work. I have heard that you need a drive that is twice the space for the TM to work. Thanks for all the help I recieve.

Rather than thinking of it in terms of twice the size of your hard drive, I think it best to think in terms of 2 to 3 times the size of the data you are backing up. If your computer's hard drive is 500GB but you are only using 35GB of it, a 1TB drive is just overkill.
