What happened to the "marching ants" in Photoshop CS5?

When I use the lasso tool and lasso an object, it does not show the dashed lines,
aka marching ants, until I let go of my mouse.  Since I can not see the lasso outline,
it is hard to tell when I get back to the beginning.  This issue also occurs with the
crop tool and other tools.  It does not show the outline until you let go.  This is not
good.

I sent a similar post here; I have had the same settings in preferences for years (with GL), and the same video card, and the "Cntrl H" does not change the "SOLID" outline to marching ants -- it use to toggle them on and off, but they are NOT there to toggle -- only SOLID line around the selection.
Rothage, what video card do you have?
The display driver, along with your video card, implements OpenGL, which has much complexity and many different versions and options.
If you've had the same video card for years, and you haven't changed anything, it almost certainly needs a driver update, if not a complete replacement.  It depends on how many years, but video cards that run Photoshop well with OpenGL acceleration have only been available for 3 or 4 years, and even today driver updates are being released that enable OpenGL functions not previously available.
Things move on.  Photoshop CS5 is using OpenGL differently than its predecessor, and it may turn out (depending on what video card you have) that to get the most out of the very latest Photoshop you'll need to upgrade to one of the very latest video cards.  The good news is that cards that run Photoshop very well can be had for well under $100 nowadays.
I suggest, at the very least, visiting the web site of your video card maker, and updating to their latest driver release.
You should also experiment with Photoshop's OpenGL advanced preferences, in the Edit - Preference - Performance menu.

  • What happened to the type tool in Photoshop CS5?

In previous versions of Photoshop, when the type tool hovered over text I could edit, it switched to just the up and down type cursor tool...and when it was over a region where I could click to create a new text layer, the cursor would show up with a little bounding box around it. Now in CS5, it is showing up as the simple up and down type tool whether I am hovered over text or not....so no way of knowing if a click is going to take me into an editable text layer, or if it is going to create a new type layer..until I actually click..
Has anyone else run into this problem? Any idea the cause, or the solution, or is it just a bug, or something that they changed for some reason?
    Thanks!

    Hello!
Did you try to reset the text tool? (hit T, then right-click the tool preset icon in the Option bar, and select reset tool)
Usually, to make sure that I can create a new text layer, even if there is already some text, one can hold down the shift key to force the creation of a new text layer.

What happened to a version of photoshop you could purchase and not have to pay adummy at adobe each month for the privilege to use their software?  This is the same thing as paying for protection from the company that makes the software, rather like a union!  This is nothing but pure greed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • What happened to the video filter in Photoshop Elements 13?

So disappointed in Photoshop Elements 13. Just upgraded from Elements 8 with great expectations that 13 would be better and more powerful. All they did was dumb it down. Wish I could get my money back.

The Extract filter was eliminated as it has been made utterly obsolete by the new selection techniques in CS5.

  • What happened to the Extract filter? (In CS5)

I just upgraded to PS CS5 (from CS3). Where did they move the Extract filter to?
Does CS5 have a newer, better way to extract a subject from its background than CS3's extract filter?
    Thanks-

  • What happened to the code reference panel from CS5?

I have been watching a CS5 Flash ActionScript tutorial, but I am using Flash CC. In the tutorial, there is a code reference panel to the left of the actions panel that has a list of all the possible code pieces, and when hovering over any of them, it shows a tooltip describing the code piece. Did they remove this panel in later versions of Flash, and if so, is there any way to bring it back? It would be extremely useful as a tool to learn ActionScript.
The following is a picture to show what I am referring to.

There's a chance you might find it in the exchange but I believe ultimately the packaged documentation is no longer the desired route to obtain help.
If you hit Help->Flash Help you'll be instantly directed online. I think that shows you that they want you to view the most up to date documentation for the product possible.
While the methods/properties/etc are missing from the left menu, you can always contextually see them by default when you type a period next to an objects name. If I make a Sprite and type the name followed by a period I am greeted by a contextually specific list of properties and methods for the object I'm referring to:
If I don't know what the property or method does, I can accept it, select it and hit F1 to be taken directly to the documentation for it:
This shows the emphasis on using the online documentation.
If you haven't already, check out these resources for learning ActionScript:

  • What happened to the ability to hide the "marching ants" (CTRL/CMD H) in Photoshop?  I cannot view the edges of my selection with the marching ants in the way!

I have been using Photoshop since version 2.5 when it came on 16 floppy disks.  In all of the versions I've purchased over the years (many) up to CS3, I have always been able to use CTRL+H (Windows) or CMD+H (Mac) to hide the "marching ants" selection outline.  This is immensely useful when making all sorts of adjustments where the edge of the selection must be viewed while "fiddling with the knobs" (so to speak).  Without being able to hide the selection boundaries ("marching ants"), I often have to make a best guess, undo the selection, get bummed that the edge isn't what I want, then have to undo, reselect, try again... over and over.   This is such a SIMPLE feature, but the lack of it is driving me crazy.  I searched HELP, but it didn't live up to the promise.  If there is a way to hide the marching ants, where is the menu item, and what is the shortcut?

You can assign Ctrl/Cmd H to hide Selection Edges (Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts) only, if you don't want to hide everything, but you will be warned if some other function has the shortcut.

  • How do I make the marching ants bigger so I can see them?

    Hi.
I just "upgraded" to Photoshop CC and a new macbook pro on Yosemite.
I have been using photoshop since the 90's and this is the first time Im having serious problems with it.
The "marching ants" are impossible to see when using the magic wand to select.
Im sure there are better ways to select these days- but I have a method to my madness and need to be able to see what Im doing.
And yes my glasses prescription is up to date.
It feels like its a function of black and white imagery and this new screen which though "better" doesn't feel "better"- in fact it makes many things harder to see...
Any advice would be very very much appreciated.
    Thank-you
    -a

2880 must make your UI look very small.   I have a display that supports much higher res but to work comfortably, I drop my screen res back so I can see what I'm doing in PS and other Adobe apps.

  • What happens to the original photo after editing?  Does it get replaced by the edited photo?

I just bought my first iPhone(5).  On Android, when editing a photo, the original stays in your gallery and the edited photo gets placed right next to it.  So what I want to know is, When editing a photo in the photo app, what happens to the original since it would be nice to be able to make different edits of it.

That is an excellent question. This is definitely not the programmed behavior of Photoshop Elements. Normally, when you edit a file, a new copy of the file is created (the original is simply left alone). This new copy of the file will have "_edited-1" added to the end of the name. It should definitely not be adding $ to the name at all.
Just as a test, create a new user account on your computer, and try editing another image to see if does the same thing there. However, I suspect there is another application on your computer that is modifying how files are saved, deleted, and renamed.

"How do you like your 7D?"
    Westy,
In my opinion the 7D is the 'best buy' in a professional level DSLR out there. The pro level featuers are many and the downsides are few.
If you couple the Canon 7D with the Sigma APO 50-150mm f/2.8 II EX DC HSM, you truly do have a fantastic set-up at the most value considered, reasonable, price.

You're asking the wrong crowd. Visit Adobe's forums to post this question. You'll have much better luck getting an answer there than here.
Not to hijack your thread but when is CS4 coming out?
No one here will know that answer, either. It's pretty safe to say though since CS3 just came out a few months ago, I wouldn't expect to see CS4 for at least another year.
