it says it still has 4 hours left to back it up? but i need to go out so will anything happen if i cancel it?

Settings > General > Reset > Reset all Settings.
This will return all iDevice settings to factory defaults... you will not lose any data.... But you will have to re-enter all of the device settings.

will i lose all my contacts and pictures?
and will it make the backlight on my iphone work?

A restore may help your iphone - it is one of the troubleshooting steps. Page 141 of the manual:
"If you restore, the latest version of iPhone software is reinstalled, default settings are
restored, and data stored on iPhone is deleted, including downloaded applications,
songs, videos, contacts, photos, calendar information, and any other data. In iTunes,
you can also restore from a backup without deleting data stored on iPhone.

I gave you the link to the Apple article to determine hardware failure earlier. If those steps or a reset, restore don't work then you need to call or visit Apple for a replacement.

Was this book downloaded using iBooks, or from another application? If it was from iBooks you will need to install that application to delete it.

We need to buy DPS pro because a client wants to use android tablets at a trade show, however the folio will not go on the app store and will be distributed to the tablets using Adobe Content Viewer.

Still, the warranty is no different than any other warranty on every other product you have ever owned. It is for a specified period (one year being a good length compared to other phones/computers,etc).
Do you worry this much over every other product that you buy?
Do all of the other products that you own break right after the warranty expires?
I always get Applecare and have only had to use it once ( a cd drive on a laptop needed to be replaced).
I have dropped my iphone more than once and it is fine.

My imac wont start up after it asked me to restart the system. Prior to that, a message showed saying i dont have enough space on my start up disk. You shouldn't be running Permissions repair booted from the install disc, in the first place. Stop it, shut down and Safe Boot. Hold Shift key down at startup chime. Give it longer to boot than usual. If you can get it to boot up, you must delete some things to make room. Likely candidates are in your home folder, music, movies, documents, pictures. The Safe Boot will, if possible, repair your drive.
If you don't want to lose them completely, you need to move them to an external drive. You should maintain at least 15-20% free of drive capacity.
You will likely have introduced real errors by repairing Permissions booted from the install DVD. You can fix them by running Permissions repair if and when you are in Safe Boot.
