What happens to my local user data? -newbie question sorry

Hi All,
Firstly apologies if this seems a dumb question, I've scoured the forums but I require something that fits my specific situation.
I've had a (my first) MacBook for about 9 months, built up a fairly healthy local user, setup just how I like it, MobileMe, iTunes, Chrome, iPhoto library, lots of other apps, etc etc and so forth.
I'm setting up a Mac Mini Server, and was wondering what I can do to join the new server, but take all my settings/downloads/iTunes etc with me... I don't want it all stored on the server, but I come from a Micro$oft Windows background. With MS, when you add a PC to a domain, login with the appropriate user account, you have a fresh profile, no settings, no files, no customisations etc etc is this also the case when I hit that Join Network Account server button on my Mac? Will I get a blank fresh account on my Macbook?
I'm guessing this must happen quite often as people start their way into Apple technology and build up a nice healthy local account before branching further into the Apple world...

The two laptops I use everyday have access to all the servers via my network account. It is set so that my user account is listed as having "no home" So I log into the laptop with my local user account with a UID of 501 but access all the network services via the go menu and my network account of the same name but with a UID of 1034.
For all other users in the company, if they are on a laptop, I use network accounts. The machines are managed to ask if the user wants to create a mobile account when they login. For permanently assigned laptop users, the answer is yes. This puts their home on the laptop and ties them to that machine. I use mobile account syncing to make sure their critical data is copied to the server for backup.
By having the machine ask to create the mobile account, users can answer no and login to their network home. The use of the laptop may be needed temporarily if a regular workstation is down.
Once in a while I will need to convert a local account to a network account. While a bit more laborious that setting it up correctly at the beginning, it can be done.
But I never let any user account have the UID of 501. I would set that up as the local admin account I use for installing updates and performing other maintenance. If needed, I would back up the user data and erase and re-install the OS.

If I delete a file in iCloud, what happens to the local file in ~/Library/Mobile Documents ? Does it get deleted to?
    Hope somebody can help.
    Thx.

I'm pretty certain that it gets deleted as well. If you try and open that mobile documents folder, it takes you to the iCloud drive folder. I've been searching for this same issue for the last 24 hours also as I inadvertently deleted my Keynote files stored on iCloud drive thinking I was just temporarily deleting Keynote from my iPad when upgrading to the latest iOS 8 version. (I needed space and thought, "Oh, I'll just reinstall later... Turns out I was in the iCloud storage area, not in my iPad storage area at the time and therefore deleted all my iCloud stored presentations. From every device.)

Once I create a Firefox account and unlink all devices and relink them with the new account, what happens to my old sync data?

You can delete the old account to remove all data stored on the server.

What happens to Apple Color users with the new Final Cut Pro x?

Some of the functions of Color have been incorporated into FCP X, meaning you will have more than the 3-Way-Color-Corrector but less than Color.
Since you cannot share projects between FCP and FCP X, you might want to stay with FCS if you rely on Color.

  • Copy Local User Data from Multiple Computers to a File Server

Just recently acquired a new company with 20 standalone computers (desktops and laptops, Windows 7 and 8.1), that are part of a WORKGROUP, with no local server at all. This site will be getting a network upgrade, and will soon have a VPN tunnel to the Main
Office (but not until cutover weekend, a month and a half in the future).  Now, all these computers have local user accounts, and some are shared computers, so copying data to a centralized location is going to be bothersome (especially if people keep
modifying/creating data everyday).  Not sure what to do...
Would anyone advise on what to do in this case?   I'd like to minimize downtime for these users while migrating them to our domain.

    Hello Fernando Chanco,
I can recommend you to use the User Migration State Tool as this provides a highly customizable user-profile migration experience for IT professionals.

    Q:
How to migrate from Workgroup network model to Domain based model?
    A:
Network base Workgroup support a few hosts without central management.
After you company/network grow, you will have to start to migrate to network base on Domain model.
The followings instructions will give you a guidelines to achieve this migration in the short and safe way. The guidelines assume that you migrate single place and serve SMB (Small Medium Business) network...

  • What happens to my local files once I activate iCloud?

Does my HD automatically delete everything and free up space?  Before I turn on iCloud  services and put my entire music and photo library 'up there' I want to understand what happens locally. I want to free up some HD space, but I'd like to keep a copy of everything locally on storage media.  Do I need to do that first?  Or do I need to manually clean up my HD once my content is pushed up to the cloud?

Does my HD automatically delete everything and free up space?  Before I turn on iCloud  services and put my entire music and photo library 'up there' I want to understand what happens locally.
    What will happen:
When you move a file from your internal drive to iCloud Drive, it will really be moved. Deleted from the internal drive and stored in iCloud.
But once the file has been uploaded, the Mac will download a shadow copy of the file from iCloud, and this file will be stored locally on your Mac  in your user library and also be included in your Time Machine backups.  There is a short interval, where you neither can access the file in iCloud nor on your Mac.  It is safer to copy to iCloud and not to move.  Once you are sure, the document can be accessed in iCloud and uploaded successfully, you can delete the original.  But because of the shadow copies you cannot save any space on your Mac using iCloud Drive.
Document types you can store on iCloud Drive:
Basically, you can store any type of document on iCloud Drive, as long as it is smaller than 15GB.
But for Music, it would be easier to use iTunes Match. This will sync your iTunes library between devices. And other than iCloud Drive, you can store the entire music library in iTunes Match and save space on your mac.
For photos, iCloud Drive is not optimal.  You can store folders with photos, but they will not show up on your mobile devices in the Photos.app. And you cannot store your iPhoto Library or Aperture Library on iCloud Drive. Photo libraries need to be stored on a locally mounted drive. Shared volumes and cloud storage are not supported by iPhoto or Aperture.
Apple is developing iCloud Photo Library (Beta). See this link:  iCloud Photo Library beta FAQ
This library is already available on mobile iOS8 devices, but not yet on the Mac. It is supposed to be supported later this year, when Apple releases a Photos.app for the Mac. Until then, you can only access this photo library using the web interface at    https://www.icloud.com/  using the Photos(Beta) app on that page.

  • What happened to "Watch this user"?

    Hello,
I used to be able to select "Watch this user" similar to how I can select "Watch this topic".
This was a great feature when I found someone who seemed to work on similar issues as I am.
Now I can no longer see that feature. What happened?
    Thanks!

    Craig and Mark,
Thank you both for replying. If I could I'd assign "Solved Problem" to both your replies but I can't. So I did the next best thing and assigned "Helpful Answer" to Craig's and "Solved Problem" to Mark's.
The only reason I gave Mark more is because it actually had instructions for how to do it.
Thanks again to both of you. I understand the privacy issue but I really miss the feature. I think it'll be hard to get people to turn it back on.
Oh well. It was nice while it lasted.

  • What happens to old iPhone users

To all AT&T or Apple employees out there on Apple Discussions,
Let's say, hypothetically, my old first generation iPhone breaks, and it is still under warranty (and it is replaceable by the warranty). What happens? Won't Apple have to give me the new 3G as a replacement? But will my plan remain the same, or will I have to upgrade just because my phone broke?
Also, is there an easy way for earlier iPhone owners to upgrade to the new 3G (I am expecting to fork over some money to do this, but it would be cheaper/easier than just buying a whole new phone with a new number and new plan)?
    Thanks,

You will get a first generation iPhone. They have plenty for repair/refurbishment issues.

You do it like everyone else. Go to an Apple or AT&T store. You can keep your same number.

  • Can I move an iTunes library from Comp1 to Comp2 through Home Sharing?  What happens with the first sync?  What happens to 3rd party app data (specifically, game scores/levels)?

I need to move an iTunes library from Computer 1 to Computer 2.  Can I do this through Home Sharing, by dragging and dropping library items from one to the other?  The library consists of iTunes purchases, home shared items and music/movies from our personal collection.  Both computers have had all the accounts authorized, so I don't anticipate an issue there.  I'd like to do this so that my son's ipod is impacted as little as possible -- specifically, his game scores/levels and other 3rd party data remain intact after the 1st sync and the organization of his icons remain intact.
Is there a way to do this smoothly and easily, protecting his ipod data/organization?

Sorry, I obviously wasn't clear. If you replicate the library from Computer 1 to Computer 2 by copying it, then all will be well. I routinely sync my iPhone and iPad both at home and at work using a single library that I migrate between the two locations via an external drive which is kept up do date using SyncToy.
Backup the iPod touch on Computer 1.
Copy the entire iTunes folder from Computer 1 to Computer 2, replacing any existing iTunes folder on Computer 2.
Check that content is accessible in the migrated library. (Won't be a problem for a standard iTunes library where all the content is inside the iTunes Media folder which in turn is inside your iTunes folder).
Connect iPod touch to Computer 2.
    Sync.
In the unlikely event that something goes wrong (it won't) then you can connect the device back to Computer 1 to restore it.
Note device backups are not stored within the iTunes library and stay on the machine on which they were created. It is theorectically possible to migrate them but there isn't really any point. Once you have synced the iPod with the copy of the library on Computer 2 then Computer 2 will make its own backup of the device.

  • GRC 10/10.1 User Data Source question

Hi folks, I've been unable to find any document that addresses this so I thought I'd ask.
I've configured GRC 10.1 so that the GRC system is looking at the ECC system and all the scenarios are configured and things are working well.  We have a separate LDAP issue, and until that's resolved, the user data sources have been set to the ECC system.
Specifically for Firefighter, we want to create Firefighters in the GRC system and assign them IDs that are configured in the ECC system so that they can get in for Firefighter related access and get their work done.  Many of these people are not in the ECC system.
I realized that I have not set up the GRC system as a connector within the GRC connectors configuration.  I also did not find any reference to this in any of the documentation that's available out there.
So I wanted to know how do you get the GRC system to become available as a user data source so that in the event a user is not available in the ECC system, and as in our case, LDAP isn't working, the user will still pull up because they exist in the GRC system?
Can I use a connection type of LOCAL in the "Change View "Connection type definition": Overview" Screen?
    Please advice.
    Thanks,
    Santosh

    Hi Santosh,
If your requirement is to use GRC as a data source, configure it as a SAP connector as you do for other SAP systems (the underlying system of GRC is Netweaver so its SAP as well).
Once the connector is configured, you can use that in your "data sources configuration - user search data source". List all your connectors and the sequence in which the user ID has to be searched for.
    For  your case.,
    1. LDAP connector
    2. ECC connector
    3. GRC connector
    Thanks.

  • What happens if the lenovo SSD data got erased?

    Hi everyone
I'm a newbie when it comes to laptops. I recently purchased a lenovo ideapad u510. I'm haivng trouble making a recovery disk. I'm not sure how to do it and I'm afraid I'm not going to do the right thing. However, my brother was using my computer thinking he knew what he was doing and erased the data that is on the SSD. My question is if the stuff on the SSD going to effect anything such as making a recovery disk or if I ever need to recovery my laptop.
    update:
I just realized that the lenovo partition was deleted is that bad?
    Thanks in advance.

    hi Jfranc,
    Welcome to the Forums.
The recovery partition is used to restore the unit from the factory condition (this may come in handy if you get a virus or simply just want to restore from the original image). If this image is gone, you may still create a recovery drive using this method.
As for the SSD, it's usually used as a cache drive. See these guides on how it works and how to reconfigure it.

  • HT4796 What happens with my old user account on my MacBook?

Once this process is done, is there a way to delete my first user account on my Mac? I mean, this is saying that everything will transfer to a new account; it won't merge with your current account on the Mac. I only want ONE user account on my MacBook. But then again, what about the apps I've installed and am using, such as Final Cut Pro or Pages? Will they be gone on my new user account that has my migrated data? Thanks in advance!

Sorry, to clarify "once this process is done" - I'm talking about once Migration Assistant is done. I'm migrating my data from my old PC laptop to my new MacBook Pro.

  • Custom search policies: remote authentication, local user data?

I'm feeling optimistic this morning, but I fully expect the answer to this question to be no.
I've just read "Open Directory Administration", in particular the part about custom search policies. What I would like is an Open Directory server that uses another LDAP server for authentication but local information for administrative information such as UID, GID, name, home directory location. Is this possible?
I can think of some security problems that could be caused if it was possible, but I had to ask - it would make my life much easier.
I realise that the sensible answer is to put the administrative information on the LDAP server. For a variety of reasons too stupid to recount here, this would be a bit of a headache. It's also probably impossible to setup Kerberos on the LDAP server.
