What has apple done?  Why is my computer more painful to use instead of easier?

Ever since the last update of snow leopard and the upgrade to lion my computer hangs, stalls, is generally "pc" like.  It seems that a day doesn't go by without the "rainbow wheel" being a significant part of my day and various programs closing and needing to be re-opened.
I know it's difficult to deal with an issue when there aren't specific examples, however, I think the many different combinations of issues I'm experiencing strongly suggests that there is a few back end issues that need to be sorted.  I noticed the "slow down" first on the last versions of snow leapord and, sadly, things haven't got better with lion.  This is even taking into consideration that I completely blasted the computer when I installed lion such that I just brought my data accross after I'd installed it to try and avoid bringing in bugs that may have had something to do with my settings.
From my perspective, Apple's built it's current market share on user friendliness.  There's a whole bunch of people out there that really want stuff to "just work".  From the last 12 month decline in performance of my Macbook Pro however, I'm worried that the pressure of bringing out something new each year is causing Apple to compromise this fundamental principal.
If anyone else has noticed a decline in general user friendliness and performance in the past 12 months I'd like to hear about it.  I'm really wanting to know if it's just me or not (ps - I have been through a complete reformat processess with the guys from Apple Care and they have check my diagnositics and say "it should all be fine".  The trouble is it's not fine).

Thanks... although perhaps you missed the bit about me taking the machine back to square one with the help of Applecare before installing Lion?
I saw that, I just didn't really belive it . There are too many variables to assume we are both talking about the same thing. I don't know what data you did copy over and how you performed that copy. You can still have some incompatible software. You could have installed some nasty anti-virus software. No way for me to tell.
I will try your suggestion though and find out what that stuff means / can do for me.  The trouble I guess is that it's now up to me to lose productivity time to find out the issues rather than being able to simply ring up the service I paid for to make sure everything is running how it should.
There is something specific about your machine that is misbehaving. You are the only one who can really track it down. The "paid" tech support people really don't do that level of diagnostics. You aren't paying them that much and they don't have that level of skill anyway. A real consultant for these issues would charge from $120-$300 an hour - with a one hour minimum.
Instead of paying that, you can post a screen capture of Activity Monitor and look for any log messages in Console.app that are repeated about 4000 times. That usually narrows down the problem real quick.

  • What has APPLE done to iTunes 7.1 This is HORRIBLE

This new version has completly jumbled all of my TV shows and will not put them back in numerical or in episode order. What is the problem here, does Apple think people just want to watch any old thing that comes up next on the computer. Help ...please put it back to the way it was or if some one knows somthing I dont please help. I have tried adding a zero. Re-ordering my Season, Name, etc.....

Thank you for responding, I figured out how to fix the problem it takes quite a bit of time though. You will have to go into each individual TV show or unless you have something like iPod TV shows which will tag your TV shows for you, you have to change all the episode IDs to something numerical such as S01E01 and so on for each episode. I'm in the process of doing this now for all of my shows and it seems to be working just fine. I hope it works out for you.

  • WHAT HAS APPLE DONE? ipod won't work with itunes 9.0

I have an 80GB iPod, (MB147LL) when trying to sync with iTunes 9.0 the iPod gets corrupted. I have the luxury of having more than 1 type of Apple computer at home. All the computers that have been updated to iTunes 9.0 will corrupt the ipod all with itunes 8.2.1 will sync just fine. All systems are running 10.5.8 OSX. What is going on? I have several iPods and they all act the same. Surely this is not just a phenomena at my house.

I have solved the problem. You need to re-instore iTunes 8.21 by following these instructions:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10371925-263.html?tag=nl.e780
Would recommend backing every stage up though just in case.
Now plug the iPod into the computer. This is what happened. It still would not sync but said 'do not disconnect'. The iPod did this time show up on the desktop so I ejected it that way. Closed iTunes down and unplugged the iPod. Reconnected it to the computer. Opened iTunes. This time it synced. I let it finish syncing. But it still said do not disconnect. So I looked in iTunes and saw it was ticked for 'enable disk use'. Undid that and everything works just fine.

  • What the **** has Apple done now? iPhone 4 no longer syncs correctly

After all the B/S of trying to sync a SonyEriccson P1i the iPhone 4 was a beath of fresh air. So typically 'Apple' with its simplicity and efficiency.
Yet suddenly it will not sync correctly. Is it iTunes 10.1.2 or iOS 4.2.1 to blame? I have no idea.
Only some of the new contacts entered into the phone transfer to the Address Book. Those that do not will not transfer in ANY direction ie. neither from MBP to iPhone or vice-versa. Enter in a nonsense address and it will sync. Modify it to one of the 'troublesome' addresses in the Adrees Book and it will not update on the iPhone.
What the **** has Apple done now? Is this another crappy untested update somewhere?

Right then, for those who want to know the most likely suspect for all this sync'ing grief is the Sony Ericsson P1i.
Having finally got the iPhone talking to iTunes normally with latest contacts, calendar, Mail accounts etc AND syncing new contacts in BOTH directions (MBP to iP4 and iP4 to MBP) I then synced the SE P1i with the latest definitive up-to-date Address Book using Device Reset in order to wipe the phone first.
Everything suddenly stopped working again with the iPhone/iTunes syncing.
Getting it working again involved importing an old Address Book backup and doing a manual iPhone sync. Then restart everything, throw away the iPhone backup within iTunes, open up Mail and just click on stuff before closing it (because the Mail Accounts had also disappeared from the iPhone again), doing a manual 'One-Time' sync of Contacts forcing the computer info onto the iPhone, re-importing the latest Address Book backup on the MBP, doing one more manual sync, restart everything, throw away the iphone backup and then an auto sync.
Finally, everything gets loaded back onto the iPhone and the ability to add or delete contacts on both iPhone and MBP is reinstated with sync in both directions.
Moral of the story? Crush your Sony Ericsson. The P900 series used to sync cleanly and easily via Bluetooth (both Contacts AND Calendars), but the P1i is and always has been troublesome and difficult and has a VERY unstable Bluetooth connection. I went through months of misery with the third-party app Missing Sync and suffered corrupted computer Address Books all the time. A real piece of SH1T.

  • Has Apple done anything to address the issue of Mountain Lion's inability to support Epson printers? I have a Stylus Photo RX620 that now is useless. I am not a computer geek so would rather not try to do an uninstall of Mt. Lion and go back to S.Leopard

Has Apple done anything to address the issue of Mountain Lion's inability to support Epson printers? I have a Stylus Photo RX620 that now is useless. I am not a computer geek so would rather not try to do an uninstall of Mt. Lion and go back to S.Leopard

Have you tried to open System Preferences, then Print & Scan and then try to Add + a printer?
I have an Epson RX580 and am using OS X 10.8.2 and it is working as a (Bonjour) printer.  My Epson RX580 is plugged into my AirPort Extreme and I can print over my wireless network to the RX580.  However, I do not see any Scan options with this setup.
Anyone know anything about getting the scanning portion of the RX580 to work over the network like the printing function does with my Airport Extreme?  Or can I not "share" a scanner over the USB port on the Airport Extreme?  I know, kind on topic/off topic - but I think it fits under OS questions better.
    Thanks for your advice!

  • What has Apple got against Flash, and can anyone tell me when 4G will be available on UK Ipads please.

What has Apple got against Flash, and can anyone tell me when 4G will be available on UK Ipads please.

Flash : http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/ . And as Adobe have also announced that they are stopping development on all mobile versions of flash it's unlikely to ever happen. You could try third-party browser apps such as Skyfire, iSwifter, Puffin and Photon which 'work' on some flash-based sites, but judging by their reviews not all. Also some websites, especially news/media sites, have their own apps in the App Store.
In terms of 4G here in the UK, there aren't currently any 4G networks services available here - and I'm not sure that the auction for the 4G spectrum here has even happened yet, so it probably won't be any time soon. But I don't think that the current iPad will be able to work on the UK's 4G spectrum which is different to what is being used in the US.

  • From ARD Client, how can I tell what has been done on my machine?

I am in a workgroup that is managed by ARD. I am not an administrator, but I'd like to get an idea of what has been done on my machine by the admin through ARD. It doesn't have to be too specific or real-time, but I'd like to get some idea. For instance, were there reports run on my application usage? Was there software installed? I'm really just fascinated by automation and software used to increase efficiency. I was thinking there would be a way to monitor incoming and outgoing requests or something, but that might not be the answer in this case. So how can I figure out what ARD admin is doing on my machine?

To answer what was asked in the subject of your question... ARD Client will not tell you anything. It is just the doorway.
There may be logs, but those would not be accessible from a non-admin account.

  • Why is it such a pain to use java in a country that uses commas as decimal?

Why is it such a pain to use java in a country that uses commas as decimal separator?
A few weeks back I've asked here about the keypad decimal key. For some reason, java doesn't map the decimal key to a comma on the Portuguese (Portugal) keyboard layout. I've got no answer and I ended up using a custom plainDocument on the JTextFields to replace all points with commas.
Now, I've just spent the whole morning trying to store and use decimal numbers properly. For some reason, a Double/Float .valueOf method (or the corresponding parse method) simply ignores the locale in use and uses US defaults when parsing the string. I can't parse anything with commas in those methods and I should, as it is the decimal separator for the system and default locale being used by java.
First of all, I shouldn't be expected to perform replacements on every single operation that comes with a comma and I obviously can't be expected to program my own locale checking to decide what decimal separator to use in each final system. Second, is there any way to work with numbers seamlessly, without having to know the locale of the end user?
I'm sorry if this is all my fault for doing something completly wrong, I'm new to java and I did search around to no avail. I'm really frustrated with what seems to be a complete lack of support in java for locales other than the US one.

Good old Cobol has the "DECIMAL-POINT IS COMMA" clause... And isn't it great? :)
Second, is there any way to work with numbers seamlessly, without having to know the locale of the end user?Consider "123.456". In some locales, this number is one hundred twenty-three thousand, four hundred fifty-six. In other locales it is one hundred twenty-three and four hundred fifty-size thousandths. How will you be able to determine which, without a locale? That's not what I've meant. Java should know the locale and behave accordingly. I don't have to know the locale of the end user since it might vary greatly. My point is that if strings are flying around with commas and if comma is the decimal separator on the end user's machine, any method aimed at parsing a numeric value out of a string should regard commas as such. I'm constantly replacing dots with commas and vice versa which could cause trouble if a different locale is used.
And I mean that as a rant. Given my inexperience with Java, there might be good reasons for such a behaviour as baftos argued. What I'm really interested is in finding the proper way to deal with this issue.
Have you tried the NumberFormat.parse? I will now.

  • What has it done with my email?

I reinstalled my OS this weekend and when loading back up it said I had to have an email to use icloud now (I used to just have a short name which was used for mac store etc)
So I duely gave it my gmail one.
Now I cannot sign into my icloud mail. It says I have to create an email for it??
Well I tried putting in my me.com one. It says I cannot have that as its already taken. I know, its mine. But I cannot fathom what has gone wrong.
icloud knows its me for this gmail one, all my contacts have transferred etc, but it won't let me have my me.com or mac.com email addy because it thinks that belongs to someone else even though it belongs to me.
I really don't want to loose them emails, but am at a loss as to what to do.

Sign in with your @me.com address in System Preference>iCloud. (Remove the other ID first if necessary.)

  • Tried to update my iphone5 and it went straight to black screen with and arrow pointing to itunes symbol. I don't have a computer and need to use my phone ASAP.

I tried to update my iPhone 5 and it went straight to. Black screen when a power cord and an arrow pointing to itunes. I googled what to do Nd it says to plug it into itunes on your computer but I no longer own a computer. I HAVE to have my phone for work and am not happy In the least with the help I've revived from Apple. I need help ASAP.

There is nothing that you can do except do what the phone is asking you to do and plug it into a computer to update it with iTunes.
I think Apple would have given you the same response too because there is nothing else that you can do - there is no other way to update the phone except by plugging it into a computer and using iTunes.
There is nothing we can do if you don't like the answers you are getting, but there is nothing else to do and it is hardly Apple's fault if you don't own a computer any longer.  Unfortunely you need a computer for this, so there is really no work aounrd.

I just bought a new iPad and I want to bring over all my apps from my first iPad but I don't have a computer, do I just set up an icloud account and upload all the things from my first iPad and then connect the new iPad to the icloud using the same account and sync it?

No. You configure your new one to use the same Apple ID. Then re-download from iTunes:

  • If FireFox 8.0.1 has been released, why does my computer say it is up to date when I click on Help About FireFox?

I am wondering why my computer says it is up to date. I have FireFox 8.0 loaded and my son just went from 7.0 to 8.0.1 and cant bring up his browser. Yet, when I go to http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/
    8.0.1 will be loaded. 11/23/2011

Current Firefox 8 installations on Windows OS's aren't getting the 8.0.1. Windows users with older versions of Firefox are getting the 8.0.1 update.
If you are having a problem with Firefox 8.0 crashing, install the 8.0.1 version; otherwise, if you aren't having a crashing problem don't install the updated version.
