What is a good replacement for the ATI Radeon X1900 XT on a late 2007 Mac Pro

I recently took my late 2007 Mac Pro to the Apple Store because it was running quite loud.  They diagnosed the problem as the fan on the ATI Radeon x1900 XT video card.  Whie the card works fine otherwise, I was thinking of replacing it.  I noticed some online recommendations that I need to upgrade to perhaps the Radeo HD 4870 if I want to install FCP X on this machine.  I do use the Mac Pro for video editing, but haven't switched yet to FCP X.  Anyone have a suggestion on a replcement video card that will work both on this machine and will be compatible with FCP X.
Thanks for any advice.

  • Is there a good alternative to the ATI Radeon X1900 XT

    I have had no end of problems with this card and spend more time trying to fix it than working. I have ordered the ATI 3870 and still waiting for it to be shipped, however these seem to be giving people a different set of problems.
    I use my Mac just for video editing. Is there a good solid graphics card that works???

    cross your fingers that the 3870 works because it's your best bet. no question that a combination of poor drivers and poor selection of vid cards make them a major weakness of an otherwise good system. the OS is great, and the hardware is mostly great, but video cards for the MacPro are really, really poor in comparison to the PC world. I have used smcFanControl since I had my first 1900 replaced and thus far I'm doing fine but I feel for you.

  • What about the ati radeon 4870 makes it incompatible with '07 mac pros?

    maybe a stupid question but there ya go.

    OWC was selling some OEM Apple 3870's last summer, short supply, never were sold by Apple, and unlike the retail 3870s, these would ONLY work in the 2008 Mac Pro.... so there is some precedent that the new Apple branded may not work in our EFI32 systems also.
    Or ATI could come out with another retail version; but this time around I'm not yet seeing a universal statement "works on any Mac Pro" for hardware requirements.
    "EFI64" is how folks talk about it, but may not be technically correct term, and just something we "made up" to describe - the whole need for two sets of EBC firmware for two versions of the Nvidia 8800GTs out there.
    (I thought EFI would begin to take off or be used more in the PC universe or something by HP and others but it is only officially supported on 64-bit OS/hardware. Snow Leopard will use 64-bit drivers. I wonder if that is part of the move to EFI64 or whatever the rightful name.)

  • The AVI Radeon X1900 XT video card in my Mac Pro Dual-Core went bad and I need to replace it. I found one that is $250 but I don't think that I need the gaming-type processor.  I am using a 23" Apple Display. Are there lower cost options? -C

    The Radeon X1900 XT video card went bad in my Mac Pro Dual-Core Intel Xeon. (I tried it with a good one at the office). I found one online that was $250. I don't need the gaming capacity of this card and was wondering if there were less expensive video cards that I could use in this machine. I run Adobe Creative Suites for graphics design and have a 23" Apply display. Thank you for any help that you can provide. -PretzelMcK

    Then pick up the ATI 5770 AND upgrade to 10.6.8.
    Same price for a good card that will work and helps to have 1GB VRAM.
    There aren't any other real choices let alone less expensive.
    Even the ebay links I had and not a lot of choices.

  • What's a good replacement for the reminders app?

    Hello everyone, thanks for your input.
    I've been on the phone with Apple support about this for some time and it seems that this was a core change made in Yosemite and since I "upgraded" to icloud drive, I can't just back to Mavericks and still having things sync via icloud.
    The reminders app no longer supports grouping of completed tasks by the day they were completed, and instead just shows a big list of every reminder ever completed in that list. I have to note what proofs and designs  I make on a time sheet at the end of each pay period and to do that I need to know what task was completed what day. Reminders was a very slick way to keep track of both the things that still need doing as well as see what was completed when. Now that I've installed Yosemite the only way to see completed reminders organized by day is to log into the icloud web interface on an OSX or windows computer and I'm concerned that that's not going to be an option for much longer since iOS 8 and Yosemite have both removed it.   It's a small change but its absolutely core to what I do. It's one of those little workflow things that seems inconsequential but has the potential to accumulate and just totally screw up your my Sundays and delay my pay checks if not done right.  All the solutions I'm coming up with, from tally them in an excel sheet to noting them in the calendar app instead of reminders, to just writing them down on postits are all kind of a clumsy, error-prone steps backward to the point that rolling back to Mavericks is looking like the best option (a painful option but at least it's just a 1-time pain)
    Before I start the mess of going in and rolling back to Mavericks and all that that entails I just wanted to see what other options are out there? Surely there's a 3'rd party app that does what reminders used to do.
    Ideally I just want it to do 3 things
         1. let me add simple reminders from OSX, ipad or iphone
         2. sync them to all the devices.
         3. let me organize the completed reminders by what day they were completed.
    Thanks!

    Wunderlist
    I would love to see reminders with better snchronization features... Not just between ios and OSX but also between ical-google cal etc...
    A good alternative right now is Wunderlist from the Mac app store.
    Pretty much does the same thing..
    It has Notification and widget snchronization with Yosemite.
    It also syncs between Ical Google Calendar, android and ios....
    Reminders needs a lot of work in my opinion.
    Wunderlist does what Reminders should be doing.
    It definitely addresses 1, 2
    3 is also done... You will have to check it out to see if it does it the way you want....
    If its for bussiness I would suggest you use the pro paid version for added functionality.
    Free version is however great also.

  • Replacement for an ATI Radeon X1900 XT

    I have a MacPro1,1 Dual Core Intel Xenon 3GHz with a bus speed of 1.33GHz.
    I have the hard drive bays full and am generating a good deal of heat. I am using smc fan control, with only limited success at helping my problem. That problem is that I believe the video card is over heating, and causing video anomalies and lockups.
    I use the box for graphic intensive applications as a photographer in my studio. I need this thing to work all the time.
    Can someone recommend a top quality replacement video card that will run cooler, but still have the horsepower. I drive dual 21 inch digital monitors.
    I appreciate any input you might have.
    Pete

    Have you not seen and read how important it is to pull the X1900 every couple months to clean out dust that clogs it up?
    Your hard drives should not run overly warm though some do hit 40's. Most drives in the last year or so run quite well, and cool enough.
    If you want to dump the X1900, the 4870 is a good investment, and there are multiple threads this week of X1900 owners.
    It doesn't take a lot to drive two 21-23" monitors. High performance usually means it needs good fans and cooling, but also produces heat. There are copper coolers for any video card.
    And if you have lockups, you have drive directory corruption and problems with the file system as a result unless you really keep on top of repairs immediately on the next boot and have Disk Warrior on another hard drive, and, a good backup. One reason to keep the OS / Apps separate from all other data.
    The 3GHz may also be running on the warm side. And FBDIMMs got better, but those are one of the main sources of heat. Some 4GB makes though are made to be cooler than even 1 and 2GB modules. Those should definitely be kept to under 75C and if possible 65C.

  • Is the Flash player GPU acceleration supported on the ATI Radeon X1900 XT?

    Anyone know if Flash player 11.1.102.55 GPU acceleration is supported on the ATI Radeon X1900 XT? I didn't see it explicitly listed in the unsupported hardware list (http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/921/cpsid_92103.html). The card is not displaying any of the stage 3D content unless I disable hardware acceleration. I get the same results whether I use Firefox, Chome, or Safari.
    I'm on a Mac, my system specs are;
    Processor  2 x 3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory  2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
    Graphics  ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512 MB
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 (11C74)
    If I need to I'll replace the card but I want to make sure it's the issue before I do.
    Thanks in advance for any insight.

    I'm wondering the same thing. I have an X1950 pro and am trying to get it to help out with youtube videos.
    The latest X**** driver was released in 2010, and the original driver at the very earliest March 2009. Both the X1900XT and X1950 Pro are not listed on that list.
    However, I do recall feeling Flash player 11 being slightly faster than Flash 10 when I first installed it. Flash still didn't become "10x" faster and 720p through 1080p video certainly still isn't smooth.

  • Is FCPX usable with late 2007 Mac Pro's with ATI HD3870 (or OEM graphics cards?

    I have a late 2007 Mac Pro with an ATI Radeon HD3870 Mac&PC (3870 ROHS 512mB) graphics card.  This card is wupposed to be OpenCL hardware capable.  Will it work with FCPX?  I'm not aware of any current enhanced graphics cards that will work with that vintage MacPro. I'm currently using FCP7, but has anyone tried this system with FCPX?

    nfoo wrote:
    According to Apple it is compatible.
    Just go ahead and try to buy it: the App Store will detect if your card is compatible and will refuse to let you buy FCPX if it isn't. So there's no risk.
    If you want to upgrade your gfx card, the Ati 5770 and 5870 are both compatible with all Mac Pro Models.
    Apple says no. The Store says mid 2010 for 5770.
    I just got confirmation from someone on the LAFCPUG forum that they have MacPro 1.1 (2006) with 5770 installed and they were able to purchase FCPX.

  • Please help: what options do we have other than ATI Radeon X1900 XT

    I think my video card (ATI Radeon X1900 XT) is about to die and I'm trying to figure out what to replace it with. (I'm on a 1st gen MacPro, still on Tiger).
    What I can't easily figure out from this site, however, is a list of alternative cards I could purchase that will fit in this machine. I gather from the ratings that the ATI X1900 has failed for just about everyone that has used it intensely. And I'd like to avoid buying the same one that is about to fail for me now, but how can I tell what my alternatives are and if they will fit in the slot and/or be compatible with my machine?
    I have been to the Mac Pro spec area, and it lists these as the "build to order" options:
    * ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB (two dual-link DVI)
    * NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 512MB (stereo 3D, two dual-link DVI)
    * Two NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB
    * Three NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB
    * Four NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB
    are those the only cards I can choose from? Are there any other better options?
    Forgive me if I sound like a totally idiot. I'm just trying to learn...

    You should visit Bare Feats and see the various reviews and benchmarks. You have several options now available besides the ones that came originally with your model. There is now an NVidia 8800 card in a version for pre-2008 MPs, the ATI 2600, and the new ATI 3870 just released. You can learn more at Bare Feats and by searching the MP forums.
    You have posted this topic in the MacBook Pro forum which is the wrong forum for your question.

  • Is there a replacement for an ATI Radeon 9600XT??? and where is it?!

    My ATI Radeon 9600 xt is overheating, sticking and acting crazy...thought about putting a fan (band aid ) on it...but would rather replace it...any other compatible cards with a dual DVI and tv port? Everything online seems to be either discontinued or refurbished for over $200...help!
    thnx in advance

    Most of the AGP cards have been discontinued as PCI-e is just so much better. You might try checking at computer repair shops that aren't big business like Bestbuy & such, they may have older cards you could buy, or try on places like Ebay/Amazon/Pawn shops/etc.
    The 9600 xt isn't dual DVI either afaik. I believe it's just TV, DVI and VGA.
    Otherwise you could take a look at these:

    etc. down the list.
    Here's the rundown I was pulling from as well. Some of them have HDMI output instead of the S-Video as well.

  • Which monitor to buy for the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro w/256MB?

    Has anyone successfully hooked an LCD through the DVI port at a resolution other than the 1920x1200 max resolution stated on the ATI box? Would a native resolution of 1680x1050 work with this card?
    I was thinking about getting the Gateway FPD2185W monitor. Has anyone else had good results with this monitor?

    I have settled on the Gateway FPD2185W. This is a great 21" widescreen, and the ATI card handles the pivot capability very nicely. It's not automatic like on a PC but it does work.

  • Is the ATI Radeon X1900 xtMac G5 only for dual cores?

    I have an old G5 single and I was wondering if this card could be used with it.

    Yes, that card (more accurately the X1900GT - the XT was for the Mac Pro only) is a PCI Express card, and only the dual core (Late 2005) G5s have those slots.

  • Multiple ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT cards in a Mac Pro

    I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with screen spanning with multiple ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT cards. What I'm looking to do is super widescreen presentations with keynote and I need more pixels. Right now I use the Matrox Dual and Triple head to go GXMs to achieve this because they make the computer see multiple monitors as one giant display but I am limited to 3840x1200 (dual 1920x1200) I was wondering if multiple video cards would also see the displays as one giant desktop?
    It works on a PC but then I have to use PowerPoint (ugh). Any help or suggestions with this? Thanks in advance.

    Multiple graphics cards will make the displays act as one large desktop, but when an application is set to full screen mode, it usually will just use one display. If the application is run in window mode, you should be able to move and enlarge (by dragging the lower-right corner) the window to use all displays, but there will be a window border (and menu bar on one display). You could zoom the display slightly to move the border off-screen. There is a setting in Zoom Options of "Universal Access" system preference to stop the zoomed image from moving unless the pointer reaches an edge.
