What is application memory and why does my macbook pro keep running out of it?
what is application memory and why does my macbook pro keep running out of it?
There is excessive swapping of data between physical memory (that is, the memory chips on the logic board) and virtual memory (one or more files on the startup volume.) That activity is relatively slow and causes the whole system to be less responsive. It can happen for two reasons:
A long-running process with a memory leak (a kind of bug)
Not enough memory for your usage pattern
Please note that if the cause is a memory leak, installing more memory will not help. That's likely if you already have more than 4 GB of memory. Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.
These instructions are for OS X 10.9 and later. Some details may be slightly different for earlier versions of OS X.
When you notice the swap activity, open the Activity Monitor application and select All Processes from the View menu, if it's not already selected. Select the Memory tab. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
from the menu bar.
If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.
The processes named "Safari Web Content" render web pages for Safari. They use a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider them prime suspects.
Another process often implicated in memory leaks is "inkjet4" or "inkjet8," which is a component of the HP printing software. If it's present, force-quit the process in Activity Monitor to solve the problem temporarily. Empty the print queues in the Printers & Scanners preference pane (which has a slightly different name in each recent version of OS X.) If you don't use an HP printer, reset the printing system. Otherwise, if the problem is recurrent, update the software (which may not help) or contact HP support.
"Wired" memory should be a small part of the total. That memory is not swapped, but it makes less physical memory available which may then result in swapping. If you have a lot of wired memory, that's usually an indication of a memory leak in a third-party program that modifies the operating system at a low level. Ask for guidance in that case.
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details.

Why does my MacBook Pro keep blacking out randomly?
I just fit this brand new MacBook about 3 weeks ago off of Amazon. About a week after I first used it, it started to blackout randomly & take me to put my password back in. I would start typing my password, then it'd do it again. Sometimes. I tried changing the settings for the energy saver, but it still continued to do it. It might happen minutes, seconds, or hours between. It's frustrating when I'm writing papers or online or doing what I need to do for school. It doesn't erase anything or turn off, but it's still not functioning like it should be for the money I paid for it. If you could help me out, if greatly appreciate it. Thank you!
While I'm not sure what the problem is, it sounds like your machine blanks out unpredictably, or exhibits general problems that are hard to describe. Something seems to be wrong, anyway
You may want to visit your local Apple Store/Genius Bar. It's a good educational resource, in case you just need to learn about your unit's features. But if there's a problem, they're the place to get it fixed. You're going to want to document the issues, specifically, and preferably so that an Apple employee can duplicate the problem on your machine. -
Why does my Macbook Pro keep shutting down during installation of OSX Mountain Lion?
Why does my Macbook Pro keep shutting down during installation of OSX Mountain Lion?
Hmm, good luck then!
I'm pretty much exactly on the opposite side of the planet, but I've been to Vermont and remember its rural beauty well. However, I can't imagine you having the only Internet connection within a reasonable radius (where "neighbors" hanging off the same ISP don't count). Uh, that note only if your wired connection to the router produces no good result, either... -
My macbook pro keeps freezing and I get a rainbow disk circling. I have to hold the power down and turn off, it will not do anything else.
Can you tell us how much RAM (Memory) you have? It's listed by clicking on the in your title bar....go to About This Mac and it's in the 1st window.
We would also like to know what size hard drive you have and how much free space is on it.
If you click on your Hard drive icon (should be upper right hand corner of your screen), or the Finder in your Dock...when the window opens it says at the bottom how much Free Space you have on your drive.
If you go to the , click on About This Mac, click on More Info... in that window. The next window says how big your hard drive is under Hardware....click on Serial-ATA.....look under Capacity:
We need to know this cause if a hard drive is too full it slows things down and creates operational difficulties.

HT1338 why does my macbook pro keep freezing up and how do I resolve it
macbook pro keeps freezing up...how do I resolve that issue
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message. Do not post thousands of lines from the log. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful. -
Why does my MacBook pro keep beeping 3 times. The screen is frozen.
Like my MacBook Pro keeps beeping 3 times and pausing for 2 seconds. The screen is frozen. How do I fix this and what is going on?
That is a RAM issue, do you have any spare ram you can swap to confirm? Possible causes:
a ram module going bad
installation of incompatible ram
your ram may have become dislodged
I would suggest:
- removing all ram from your MBP, and reinstall it to see if that helps.
- if you recently installed new ram, remove it, then restart the computer with the old ram to see if this helps. -
My macbook pro keeps saying its not supported when i try to transfer images and stuff from my macbook pro to my iphone 4. What do I do?
First, put your images into iPhoto or into a separate folder. Open iTunes and connect your phone. Select the iPhone under the Devices section of iTunes' sidebar. Click on the Photos tab in iTunes' main window. From the dropdown menu you can select iPhoto or some other folder from which to sync the photos to your phone.

Why does my macbook pro keeps freezing up
macbook pro keeps freezing up
If you have a 2012 model and its still within the return period- bring it to Apple right away ! Apple had a slew of faulty laptops come out in the back to school crunch - everything from Macbook Pro's not being set up right to work with intel HD 4000 graphics thus causing freezing- fans not working all that well causing over heating - to Macbook Air's having faulty wifi units.
If you can- exchange it ! -
The message displayed in the Force Quit Applications window says "Your Mac OS X startup disk has no more space available for application memory. The only applications that I have open are Safari and Finder and I am simply reading a discussion board.
It would appear that this error can be caused by an excessive system demand for swap space that exceeds the maximum allocation. Just try restarting the computer.
I found a possible solution for finding the cause of the error. Open Activity Monitor. Be sure you have the Real Memory column showing and the Processes dropdown menu set to All Processes. Select the Real Mem column and sort in descending order. Leave Activity Monitor open. The next time the error appears the application at the top of the column is the one causing the error. -
While transferring files from one external hard drive to another, my MacBook Pro routinely would freeze and often render a message to hold down the start button until it shut down and then restart. I have i7 why does it keep locking up?
You can go back to original hardware; run Apple Hardware Test even.
Remove 3rd party RAM ( much rarer I think )
USB printers, cables, devices and drivers.
What changed?
Also, this is not MBP forum.

Why does my MacBook Pro keep making a two-tone beep once a minute.
The heading says it all:
My MacBook Pro:

Processor Speed:

Number of Processors:

Total Number of Cores:

L2 Cache (per Core):

For the last couple of days, every minute, my Mac has been making a two-tone beep. I have absolutely no idea why. There are no jumping icons to tell me that a program wants my attention and I have tried closing all my applications, the problem does not go away.
I live in Nepal and there are no Genius bars to go to, what do I do?
Thanks,
Keith.Backing up should not be a problem. Has your computer had a knock recently? I'm just wondering if a RAM module may be slightly unseated. You can google YouTube videos on resetting it, you also may need to to search these forums to reset PRAM and SMC.
Good luck

Why does my Macbook Pro keeps crashing recently
I've got my Macbook Pro for my studies. As a design student, design softwares dominates and are extremely important for us.
Recently (I have no idea why) My Macbook just keep crashing and crashing crashing non-stop. This Macbook is approx. more than 1month old but less than 2 months. This crashing event started around last friday, when i headed to my studio and 1st thing was to switch it on (I seldom shut my Mac down, just close it and head to sleep), after using it for no more than 45mins, the blue screen or rather 'the blue screen of death' that my friend called it, just popped out all of a sudden.
Tried to get it on, it hung with a white screen right after i switch it on, the Apple logo and spinning wheel appeared. After resting it for about 5mins, i was able to get it on, i started trouble shooting manually, and found out that my Mac crashes when i was using Google Chrome (My main browser) halfway.
I changed to Safari from then on and found out that my Mac crashes when i use MSN messenger. So i changed to Adium. Then my sister borrowed my Mac to open .FLV files using Adobe media player and it crashed again while she tried putting it in full screen. I avoided all these and after 2 days, i switched on AutoCad on my Mac and it crashed again, while its loading.
I tried calling Apple for help but they told me they couldn't tell me more because it hard to say whether its software problems, or my Mac's hardware problem.
I've used Google Chrome and MSN since the very start and no problems surfaced until then. And i'm sure these popular apps like Adobe Media Player, Chrome, MSN and AutoCad are NOT suppose to crash because these apps are widely known and my Macbook is rather new.
These are the following hangs that i've been facing :
- Blue screen with vertical stripes
- Horizontal stripes with typical green and pink pixel
- Screen just froze
- Screen froze, but cursor still moving
- White screen right after the Apple Logo & spinning wheel at Start-up
- Soft blue screen right after the Apple Logo & spinning wheel at Start-up, right before log-in
I'm in desperate need of help, please kindly advice,
Wilson Yeo,
Thank youI agree with Apple. It is hard to say, but from the list you provide I would guess it's a problem with the mainboard. What I definitely do know is what you have to do: Go to an Apple store and tell them what happens. They will most probably replace the mainboard.

Why does my Macbook Pro keep freezing with the spinning beach ball?
Hi,
This issue started yesterday. Every minute or so or less, my Mac will freeze up and I cant do anything, and then the beach ball will pop up for 5-60 seconds before going away, my machine unfreezes, and it happens again pretty quickly.

Why does my Macbook Pro keep flashing to blue screen randomly?
I bought my Macbook Pro last August and have used it for four months now. It's still new. Everytime I check on it, the screen keeps flashing to blue in like 5 minutes and I push Command + Shift + Q to log off and the screen goes back to normal. It keeps happening a couple times since I got my Macbook Pro. Does this mean I am under warranty?
This is a known 2011 Macbook Pro 10.6.8 problem. Occasional blue screen when quitting applications due to graphic card switching. Temporary fix is to turn off graphic card switching. Under Apple, system preferences, energy, uncheck box. You can also close your display, allow sleep, re-open. Should return to desktop as if nothing happened. We are waiting for Apple to fix the problem?

com.apple.kec.pthread 1Thanks, that seemed to work. But now I've been having a new issue lately. I'm starting to think its hardware related, but either way I've had many crashes...some not always with a crash report. It seems my SMC is acting up at times, and other times the screen will glitch out and produce these pixelated horizontal bars and then crash. I just reinstalled OS X, I've run the usual diagnostics. I'm getting ready to run a Apple Hardware Test, but I figured I'd come to you for help first.
Here's the most recent crash that occurred (no horizontal bars this time), but it did crash and refuse to restart (it beeps the strange tone from what seems like a spot other than the speaker, that's how I came across the system management controller reset). Anyway, here's the report:
