What is drop box for

I notice that there is a folder called "drop box" in my public folder. What is this used for?
I use dropbox but this is different.

This folder can be used by other users logged onto your System to share files with you like a P.O. Box
It has nothing to do with the dropbox service on the internet .

Creating a "Drop Box" for different users

I currently have seperate user accounts for my wife and I and a user account for all our photographs. What I would like to do is have a folder on our respective desktops that is shared i.e in my Photos account I drop a photo into the folder and then when I am using my own account I can open that folder on my desktop and use the photo within my own account.
Could anyone suggest how best to do this?

I think if you will go to Users in Finder an open the folder for another users you will discover if folder called Public that there is already a Drop Box. See if that helps.

I am looking for a way to have a place on my church's website where anyone can "drop" photos from events. Is this possible? Would it require a special log in? And if so, could it be made on only allow a person access to the drop box?

<u>As everybody told earlier, you first need to create Data Element using SE11 Transaction.
Then a new custom domain element using same SE11 Transaction.
For this domain, you need to maintain fixed values under the value range tab
say you maintain 2 values
X -> Selected
' ' -> Not selected
Then the user-defined in the shopping cart will provide you drop-down list and will not allow you manaully enter anything else than the fixed range values maintained at the domain level.</u>

Reverse Drop-Box for ARD

I have a mac lab at our school with 20 computers. I can copy folders to the students via unix commands when I need them to have files, but I need to find out how to have a reverse drop-box so when they drag and drop a file into a specified folder, the files are sent to a specified folder on the admin computer. Any help with this would be appreciated.
Also, it would be nice to be able to drag and drop files into a specified folder on the admin computer and have a folder plugin send it to a specified folder on the client comptuers. I can do this through automator to the desktop, but not sure how to specify a certain folder.

Is Filesharing enabled on the admin computer? Isn't there a Shared folder there that could be used with an Action to watch certain folders on the lab computers?

HT5225 Syncing data between devices vs. sharing data and drop box files.

As you most likely kwow, I've been told that only Lion will allow one to use the cloud to share music, contacts, photos, and etc. between one's phone, iPad, and computer. Let's say I have 4000 photos on my desktop; and I don't wish to see all them on my other devices. Can I choose only the ones I need by connecting the iphone to the pc or iPad by using iTunes- or should I drag and drop all contacts,etc. that I wish to put in icloud - or should I use my drop box for all or some files? For instance, none of my iPhone phone number contacts came with there existing email addresses. I should say that I have many contacts and songs on an older version - leopard that is not compatible with iCloud. What would do?

Having played around more with PadSync, I find that I can drag files into PadSync (which then sync to the iPad), but when a revised version is synced back to PadSync, I can double click the icon to open the file in the mac's native application, but I can't drag the file out to a destination folder or use any other means of getting it out of PadSync.
Am I missing something?
---- ah, I found the way. I was looking at the files in PadSync using icon view. When I switched to list view, I can then drag files out of PadSync. Funny, I can't drag files out using icon view.

Migration Assistant created account without a Drop Box

I migrated a friend's account from old Pismo running Tiger to my Mac Pro running Leopard. The last time I had seen the Migration Assistant was years ago under Tiger, & it was crystal clear and idiot proof. The Leopard Migration Assistant has more stages to the operation, and a lot more choices, some of which weren't immediately clear to me. The end result was the account was created without a Drop Box! I thought I was telling it not to copy his Drop Box, and never realized I was telling it not to create it. Now, the question is, after this ridiculous Human Interface Failure, how can I create a Drop Box for this account? I need to move stuff across the User account barrier sometimes, and it is presently not possible.

OK, I noticed the Drop Box doesn't look right, so I will try your terminal commands, thanks.
Ooops - Looks like I have more problems. The Migration Assistant really screwed me up. When I opened the Terminal, it was displaying "Last login...." and it says my computer is now called my friend's computer. Also, I am not sure how to use your commands, because how does the computer know what folder it applies to, if I am in my account, and the drop box is in my friend's account? Did you mean for me to run the commands from within my friend's account?

Lost files after creating a Drop Box - WHERE DID THEY GO?

Having set up a Drop Box for certain private pictures of my fiance by creating a folder and changing the access permissions using "Get Info", and changing everything to "Write Only (Drop Box)" I later tried to access the files by changing the permissions back to "Read & Write", to which OS X said "Are you sure, this cannot be undone?" I said Yes and entered my password, at which point the picture folder reverted to being a normal filder again, but now with apparently nothing in it. It seems that I accidentally deleted the picture files I had dropped into the drop box. The mystery goes on, since in the 'More Info" panel for the folder, it still says that it's taking up around 9MB of disk space (about the size of all those pictures), so could it be that they're still lurking somewhere?
Any help gratefully received......

Permission Problem with Group Drop Box in Dock

I THOUGHT I created write-only drop boxes for my students on their docks. They're able to drop their documents into it correctly, however, they can also open the group folder and see each others' folders by double clicking on it. I thought I had locked this down by setting the student permission to read-only in Sharing. How do I make the drop box write-only? I'm using OS X.3.9 Server.

Having the exact same problem here with MAC NFS server running Tiger. Mac clients work fine, but same user on a Linux NFS client ignores group permissions.

Drop Box Function

I'm a little confused about how the drop box feature works. My understanding of the drop box feature is that students are able to place their own work in the drop box for the instructor to review. A key component of this feature is the idea that the students cannot access the work of their classmates. Students should also be able to go back later to review the work that they placed in the drop box.
We have been getting reports that some students are able to see the work of all or a few of their classmates within the drop boxes, that some students cannot see anything in the drop boxes, and that some students can only see their own work in the drop boxes.
My question is this: given that each user is authenticated as either an instructor or a student, how does iTunes U differentiate between users within the drop box?

Just to be clear on this, when you say "identity string", do you mean the string of credentials combined with the user information that allows someone to authenticate to iTunes U? It should be comprised of individual "generic" credentials that look like this:
Student@urn:mace:lafayette.edu:classes:tst101
Not something specific to each student, like this:
joestudent@urn:mace:lafayette.edu:classes:tst101
The additional access permissions I am talking about for a course can be found by clicking the "edit access" link within the course; that gives you access to all the credentials for the course; the ones listed in the "drop box" drop down are just a subset.

Access Denied when Student Uploads Course in Drop Box

All of a sudden we are getting access denied when a student tries to upload a course. We have not changed anything on our end. The tabs on the course page are set to drop box for student. The credentials sent over are:

Some websites require a special client certficate for access. If you don't have that certficate, you'll have to contact the site operator to find out how to get one.
Sometimes the problem is caused by a web server that is configured to request an optional client certificate. Safari treats the request as mandatory. In that case, other browsers such as Firefox and Chrome may be able to connect to the site, because they ignore the request.
The first time you were prompted for a certificate, you may have clicked through a dialog that requested access to the Apple certificate in your keychain that is used to secure the iMessage service. In that case, you may be able to regain access to the site in Safari by doing as follows.
Back up all data.
Double-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

Setup drop-box folder on external drive for multiple Macs

Greetings,
I have a classroom full of photography students who need to turn in 4GB folders with pictures in them so that the teacher can grade them. We've discussed various options for facilitating this, with the only feasible solution we can come up with being setting up an external 2TB MyBook and having the kids go up, plug in the firewire and xfer their folder to the drive (see requirements below for why this is the feasible solution). One snag with this is that I want to set it up so that when the drive mounts, it's mounted as a drop-box share to prevent plagiarism as well as kids deleting/messing with other kids' projects. The problem is that each computer has different profiles so when the drop-box is setup correctly on one computer, another computer is plugged in and the folders are wide open again. Since I obviously can't setup the permissions for each profile on each computer, what options do I have to set this up? I'm open to different ideas/different ways to accomplish this, but here are the requirements:
- Drop-box-like functionality. Students can basically "submit" work, but only the teacher can view the files.
- Preferably the device needs to be hardwired to the MBP using Firewire. USB is too slow and these are wireless laptops without benefit of having any ethernet jacks accessible to them. They are all connecting through an Airport Extreme and xferring 4GB files wirelessly is not an option due to class time restraints.
- This has to work across 30 laptops with multiple user profiles.
- If software is a suggestion, free and/or OSS is preferable since this problem will be mitigated next school year with implementation of iMacs and Xserves in this program.

I would love how to do this as well. I actually tried moving a .mbox file out of ~/Library/Mailboxes/Mail and onto an external hard drive. Then I created an alias of the .mbox file and put it back into ~/Library/Mailboxes/Mail. No luck.
