What is exactly "host name"?

Hi there again everyone!
I am being asked to give my host name, it is part of a tutorial for making custom ftp-only accounts on OS X.
I was wondering, is it .. My computer's name?
Perhaps more info would be needed to understand my situation, so here is the link with the tutorial:
http://www.ldml.com/services/support/macosx/ftpUserCreate.html
I am at the "NAT?" section, to get around NATs problem, and it says:
Add the line "advertise all <host>" where <host> is either the host name or external IP address for the FTP server.
Since I have a dynamic IP adress, I though just putting my host name could work, but I wanted to be sure what it was exactly before going further.
If after all it's about domain name (?) or the adress, I've made up an account at DynDNS, and got an adress for my computer which is: nikkormat.kicks-***.net
I though maybe it was asking this adress?
Great thanks in advance for help! I am really stuck at this steps.. :P

Hope this helps.
Definition of: host name
The logical name assigned to a computer. On the Web, most hosts are named WWW; for example, www.mycompany.com. If a site is composed of several hosts, they might be given different names such as support.mycompany.com and sales.mycompany.com. SUPPORT and SALES are the host names, MYCOMPANY the subdomain name, and COM is the top-level domain name.

Question- What is the host name?

It's the name of your incoming and outgoing (SMTP) servers for your email provider.  You need to get these from your email provider.

  • Domain name/"primary DNS" name/mail host name/mail server name/mx name

    Hi,
I have registered my domain name (N.com) with an external dns server and created an MX record (mail.N.com) for it as well. My server sits behind a router and internet traffic is port(80)-forwarded to my server's fixed internal ip address (I can access my webpages from the internet just fine). When I initially setup the server I was asked to give it a "primary DNS name." I naturally assumed that N.com was supposed to be entered here, but that just caused all kinds of problems (though I still do not understand why). So I reinstalled and currently have server.N.com as the primary DNS name of the server (although it shows up in Server Admin and Workgroup Manager as server.local--why is that?)
I have had no luck getting any email from the internet with the default settings in mail services (domain name of N.com and host name of server.N.com). Having no luck with the defaults, I assumed that maybe I needed to change the host name to "mail.N.com" so that it matched the MX record. I also changed the user preferences in Workgroup Manager to receive mail from mail.N.com--but still no luck. Could someone tell me what I am doing wrong and how come none of the Mail Service literature mentions anything about what a mail "host name" is supposed to be? Is it supposed to be the same as the "Mail Server" name that Workgroup Manager asks each user for? and is it the same as the MX record name?
I am just needing some help to connect all these variously named, but undefined, dots.
Also, how come I can access webmail from the internet using www.N.com/webmail but can't do it from any computers within my physical network (I have to use IPaddress/webmail or server.local/webmail)?
Also, should my user email addresses be [email protected] or [email protected] (which is the current default)?
Thanks in advance and good luck!
    John

I had been told by a friend that ... regular email coming in from the internet would go through port 80
    Unfortunately you were misinformed.
My MX record needs the extra subname (such as "mail") in front of the domain name, right?
Not at all. A MX record for 'N.com' is entirely valid (expected, in fact).
An MX record tells remote mail servers where to send mail for any domain/subdomain. If you think about it, let's say you worked for Apple and you wanted people to be able to send email to [email protected], well then you need an MX record for 'apple.com'.
You can see if you dig MX apple.com that they actually have 9 MX records, but the point still stands.
Now, you might also have MX records for subdomains so that you can have [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], etc. Each of these subdomains would need a separate MX record.
So, in general, for any set of email addresses @[anything.]domain.com you have a MX record telling remote mail servers where to send that mail.
Of course the MX record name is mail.N.com, but I think you are implying that the in the Mail settings of Server Admin where it asks for domain name all I need to put there is the N.com, right?
What I mean is that you need to set the domain name to whatever domain name you expect to receive mail at.
If you want users to have email addresses in the form of [email protected], then you enter 'N.com'.
If you want users to have email addresses in the form of [email protected] then you enter 'mail.N.com'.
If you want both forms, enter one in the main domain and add the other(s) in the Advanced -> Hosting -> Local Host Aliases section.
Is there anything in the Mail settings that needs to have the full MX record name (mail.N.com)?
Yes. Either the 'domain name' or the 'Local Host Aliases' needs to contain the same thing as your MX record. That's because the MX record tells remote servers to send mail to this machine, but the machine won't accept the mail unless it is configured to do so.
What is the "host name" supposed to be?
This should be the name that remote servers see when this machine tries to send outgoing mail.
Ideally this should match the reverse DNS of your IP address, that way when it connects to a remote server it says "Hi, I'm $hostname" and the remote server can lookup the machine's IP address and see the same result. This will reduce the problem of remote servers thinking you're sending them spam.
If you only have a single IP address then this probably needs to be something like 'N.com'. If you don't have control over your reverse DNS then you're going to run into a problem.
Also in the user accounts (in Workgroup Manager) what should the "mail server name" be? Is it the host name or the domain name?
    Off hand, I don't know.
Also, why are all the default user email addresses [email protected] (the name I gave the server at setup)? Why doesn't the user accounts create [email protected] as the default address?
Presumably because the mail server says it is 'server.N.com' and therefore any accounts on that machine would be [email protected]. Changing the domain name (as above) should fix that.

  • Host name is invalid

I have gone through the setup of my newly installed lion server software.  I setup a server.example.private host name and have turned on file sharing, and VPN.  I bought the server software so I can access my host computer from my IPad and a windows based laptop.  When I attempt to setup the profile manager I get to the screen in the directory admin setup that asks for the host name and password, etc.  The name and host name are already populated with a generic names and the password fields are blank.  Whether I leave the generic fields blank and try and enter a new password or change the generic fields and password to something new I get the same error message every time.  It says "Computers host name is invalid.  The host name does not resolve to any configured address on this comp.  Please ensure the host name is correct.  How do I find out what the correct host name is for my computer?  Thanks in advance.

First the difference in names.  .local is the bonjour address.  Your .private is a DNS address.  While .local can be used for both, it is highly discouraged.
So in Server Admin > DNS, you want to be on the Zones tab. In here you will want to do the following:
Prep:  Let's assume you want to define your system as host name server, domain name myfamily.private.  So the fully qualified name is server.myfamily.private.  Change the examples below to match your needs.
1:  Click on Add Zone and select Add Primary Zone (Master)
2:  In the Primary Zone name, enter myfamily.private
3:  In the Nameservers box click the + button.
4:  An entry will appear.  The zone colume should read myfamily.private and the Nameserver Hostname will likely grab your Bonjour name and enter <bonjour_name>.myfamily.private.  (Please not many items in DNS end in .  This is really important do not remove them.  If you need to, override the <bonjour_name> and enter server in its place.  This way, the Nameserver Hostname colume should say server.myfamily.private.
5:  You can Save at this point if you want
6:  Now, click on the Add Record button and choose Add Machine (A)
7:  When the panel appears enter the following:
             Machine name:  server.myfamily.private.
IP Address:  enter your fixed IP address of the server - this can be found in System Prefs > Network and should be the IP address assigned to the Ethernet port.  For illustration, lets assume it is 10.0.0.10
    8:  Click save
9:  If you are paying attention, you will note that a second zone file was created automatically for the reverse zone,  It will have a name of 0.0.10.in-addr.arpa.  This is the reverse zone file and contains number to name mapping (where the primary zone is name to number).
Now you have two valid zone files.  Check your work by doing the following:
    1:  Open Terminal
    2:  Enter this command:
         nslookup server.myfamily.private 10.0.0.10
3:  The result should be 10.0.0.10.
4:  Now test again with nslookup 10.0.0.10 10.0.0.10
5:  This tests the DNS running on the machine to return the proper results to you.
Now, that it is working, go back into System Preferences > Network and make sure the first DNS server address is the address of your server.  This way you will talk to your system first for name resolution.  But since your systems is SOA for myfamily.private only, nearly all requests will be past to the public DNS servers provided by your ISP.
If you are good to this point, then go back into Server Admin > DNS and remove all those other zone files.
Ok, if you got this far, then reboot the server.
After the reboot, repeat those nslookup commands and make sure you are still resolving as expected.
Now, to check if there is any lingering damage.  Since it sounds like you have not configured any/many services, this is a good thing.  So enter this command in Terminal and tell me the results:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
Now, you will need to clean up after your server.

  • What is "Host name" in setting up mail accounts

I can't seem to send a message. I keep getting an error message that the connection to the outgoing server failed.
My Incoming Mail Server is "pop-server.tampabay.rr.com" is set up correctly, but
My Outgoing mail is "smtp-server.tampabay.rr.com" and this asks for a "Host Name"
What do I put in for the Host name? There is no hyphen available to set this up as "smtp-server....".
It shows an example of "smtp.example.com", but I don't have anything that is "smtp.tampabay.rr.com". So what do I use?

  • Dont understand what i should put down for host name for creating an email account?

Dont understand incoming and outcoming server. dont know what to put for host name.
    can someone help?

Do you have your email account set up on your computer e.g. on Outlook on a PC or Mail on a Mac ? If you have then you should be able to sync the settings from that to your iPad via the Info tab when connected to your computer's iTunes. Or you could just look at the settings for the account on your computer's email program and copy them over to the iPad manually.
The incoming and outgoing server names are the servers that your email provider uses for your account to recieve (incoming) and send (outgoing) emails. A lot of accounts should be covered by the options that are listed on the 'Add Account' screen - for my Yahoo based accounts I just chose Yahoo! and the settings were set for me. If you have an account that isn't covered by those types then you could try logging into your account via a browser and see if they have any help for what settings you need to use. Different account providers have different settings, so if your can't find anything on your provider's site if you say on here who your provider is there might be somebody else here who has the same provider and can tell you what settings to use.

what is the exact file name for Adobe Photoshop Elements application?
I jsut downn laoded it and the alias does not work. in the  support folder I have an application titled Adobe photoshop Elements Editor and it lauches ok but when I got to import a photo it only asks for a frame from  a video.

You do not import anything to the editor. You just open things there using File>Open. Import is only for frame from video and for scanning if your scanner is compatible and you install the PSE twain plug-in.
If you wish to use PSE to keep track of your photos, launch Adobe Elements 11 Organizer instead of the editor.

  • What's the reason for this message, "A server with the specified host name could not be found" ? I'm using iPhone 4s, 16gB, iOS 7.0.4

I get a pop-up message saying "A server with the specified host name could not be found", whenever I try to access any streaming websites/apps or even WhatApp over Wi-Fi and I cannot access the specific THING for that moment, and I've tried switching Wi-Fi On and Off both in my Phone and also in the Router. I got an internet connection and a Wi-Fi router just before two days, and it's happening since. I got the internet speed around 80kbps and i can easily stream YouTube videos except sometimes, I receive that annoying message. I can't even browse the internet in Safari, which says "No Internet Connection"(Even though the Wi-Fi is connected), and I can access it after somewhile (say 10 minutes, it'll be perfectly alright). I use iPhone 4s. And everything about the internet connection is totally fine in my Computer, but not in my iPhone, as I've explained the issues, above. If there are any technical settings that I should change/modify, either on my computer(Windows 7 OS) or in my iPhone(iOS 7.0.4), PLEASE let me know
I hope I've provided enough information for the reader to understand my point. (I apologize for my verbal mistakes, if there are )
    THANKS

    Hello Paneesh,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with Wi-Fi on your iPhone 4s.  I recommend the following steps:
Be sure you're in range of your Wi-Fi router (access point).
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi off and on. If your W-Fi setting is dimmed, follow these steps.
Confirm that your Wi-Fi router and cable or DSL modem are connected to power, turned on, and connected to the Internet. If not, refer to your network administrator or Internet service provider (ISP) for assistance.
    Restart your iOS device.
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and locate the Wi-Fi network to which you're connected.
    Tap and Forget this Network.
Try to connect to your desired Wi-Fi network.
Note: You may need to enter your Wi-Fi password again if your network requires one.
Turn your Wi-Fi router off and on2. If your ISP also provides cable or phone service, check with them before attempting this step to avoid interruption of service.
Update your device to the latest version of software.
Update your Wi-Fi router to the latest firmware2. For AirPort Base Stations, install updates using the AirPort Utility.
If the issue is still unresolved Wi-Fi disconnects or signal strength is less than expected
Move closer to the Wi-Fi router (access point).
Check for sources of potential interference.
Remove any case, stand, or other accessories from your iOS device and see if signal strength improves.
Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Note: This will reset all network settings including
previously connected Wi-Fi networks and passwords
    recently used Bluetooth accessories
    VPN and APN settings
