What is it with iMacs eh? If it's not one thing it's another.

Okay, nothing disasterous, but annoyances that mount up.
To cut a long story short, I started off on a Mac mini, and was so impressed I decided I wanted something with more oomph, so got took it back to the store within 10 days and traded up to a 20" Intel iMac. But I sold that in a fit of madness and poverty after 4 months. Doh!
In the time I owned it I loved it, apart from these annoyances:
- Mighty Mouse (and any USB optical mouse) caused interference on headphone socket (I tried many different mice, headphones and speakers)
- Superdrive was very noisy and clunky from putting in the disk to reading to writing to ejecting the disk (what happened to the slot drives Apples used to have that slowly, silently sucked the disk in eh?)
- Start-up chime was too noisy / not disableable (is that a word?)
Okay, now here I am a few months later, missing it like aitch-eee-double-ell, and so I've taken the plunge again and bought another 20". And so far I'm loving it again, apart from these annoyances:
- Mighty Mouse (and any USB optical mouse) still causing interference on headphone/line-out socket (I tried many other different mice, headphones and speakers - finally I've discovered that a ball mouse or laser mouse does not cause any interference)
- Superdrive maybe not quite as noisy and clunky as the original iMac I had, but still cheap sounding.
- Start-up chime seems to be louder! Anybody know how I can disable or at least reduce the volume of this?
- 250gb hard-drive is actually only 232gb... where's the other 18gb gone? I could fit my music collection into that! And before anyone states the obvious - that 232gb is the disk size, not the remainder after the system and software has been added.
- Hard-drive seems to noisier and slower too, its general background whirr seems louder and more noisy, but definitely disk reading and writing is noisier and slower... plus it seems to make the machine vibrate more than it did before.
Okay, these might seem minor annoyances but they mount up and are not what you expect when you have paid £1200 for what is supposed to be the best PC (I use that term in its pure sense, as in 'personal computer' not as in IBM/PC Compatible) in the world.
The drive is listed as a WDC WD2500JS-40NGB2 - I guess that means it is a Western Digital? I'm sure my other iMac had a Maxtor? The iMac packaging says it was made in China. Dunno if that makes any difference - I've heard that they have been made in Malaysia, California and Ireland as well.
Hmmm... perhaps I should have stayed with the G4 Mac mini that I had no problems with whatsoever, for Garageband etc, kept my ahem IBM/PC compatible for the heavy duty stuff like video-editing, games-playing and number-crunching, and saved myself £700-800?

"Start-up chime seems to be louder! Anybody know how I can disable or at least reduce the volume of this?"
There used to be an application available at Version Tracker that would disable the startup sound. I can't remember the name of it off hand nor do I know if it will work with and Intel mac but you might try searching for it.
You could plug in a pair of headphones or earbuds or the like which will make the start up chime much less loud, or a set of external speakers and not turn them on until after the chime sounds.
" Superdrive maybe not quite as noisy and clunky as the original iMac I had, but still cheap sounding."
Can't help you there.
"- 250gb hard-drive is actually only 232gb... where's the other 18gb gone? I could fit my music collection into that! And before anyone states the obvious - that 232gb is the disk size, not the remainder after the system and software has been added."
Already answered.
"- Hard-drive seems to noisier and slower too, its general background whirr seems louder and more noisy, but definitely disk reading and writing is noisier and slower... plus it seems to make the machine vibrate more than it did before."
Tough one to deal with online. Does it seem like your Mac is accessing the drive more than you remember as compared to your first one? Do you have less ram in this one perhaps? I am not sure about the vibration issue as there are a lot of variables to consider such as location and others but if it seems to vibrate excessively you might want to take it to a repair center and have it looked at. Maybe the drive is not fastened tightly or something.

What's wrong with my device?  It does not allow me to make calls with Skype or Viber...  Can someone help?

My device is a Blackberry Z30.  Skype and Viber just to work fine.  I had to travel abroad and turn off data services while traveling outside of the US but the applications worked just fine with Wi-Fi.  Suddenly they stopped working to make calls.  I can still send text messages, but when I try to do a voice or video call (in the case of skype), it only says "failed call" and when I try to call using Viber I get an error message that says the I can not use the application until I complete my GMS call which is ridiculous because I'm not using the phone other than trying to place my call through Viber. The interesting thing is that when I go the permission page in my security settings everything indicates that its on but is gray out and I do not have access to change any setting.  The same in both applications.  The rest of the applications are accessible to change settings.   I already uninstalled skype and reinstalled it and still the same problem.  I'm ready to back up everything and wipe out the device to original settings.

The reason your applications do not work in Lion/Mountain Lion is that they were written for the older PowerPC CPU that all Macs used up to 2006.  When Apple made its transition to the Intel CPU, they licensed software that they included in all versions of OS X (from Tiger to Leopard and optionally, Snow Leopard) called Rosetta.
Rosetta miraculously allows PowerPC applications to work on the Intel processor transparently; you do not know it is even present.
The problem is that after 6 years of the transition, Apple's license to use the underlying software expired for OS X Lion and all version thereafter (and it is doubtful that the current owner of the software, IBM, would relicense it, even if Apple were inclined to do so).
So you do not have to accept recriminations from others for previously using Rosetta without even knowing it was present and running!
So for those of use that need to upgrade to Lion/Mountain Lion, I have offered the option to install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels 7:
    And now Mountain Lion:
If you are unable or unwilling to update your inventory of PowerPC software, this solution offers you an alternative for not more than the $29 cost of Snow Leopard and $79 cost of Parallels (cheaper via internet sources).
Full Snow Leopard installation instructions into Parallels 7 are here:

  • Upgraded to MacBook Pro, what to do with iMac?

    Hey guys,
I just got an MBP. Have been trying to sell my 2009 iMac for a month, but no one seems to want it (I live in a pretty-much PC and Android-dominated location). Is there anything I could use it for to complement my MBP? For now it just gathers dust on my desk.. poor thing!
P.S. Such a shame theren't any ways to recycle those products, I've accumulated old iPods and iPhones over the years and just cannot bring myself to throw them away, even though they're completely out-of-date today.

It does depend on where you live. For example, is there a "freecycle" group in your area where you could post?
    https://www.freecycle.org
Perhaps a charitable organization would be interested?
Or you could try to sell it on eBay.

  • What's wrong with this MySQL connection? "Could not create connection to database server"

I'm able to connect to other MySQL databases but this one particular remote MySQL connection isn't working and I cannot figure it out.  It probably has something to do with the remote server, not CF, but I thought I'd post it here if anyone had an idea.  The MySQL account has full priviledges.
Here is the message when I try to validate the data source:
Connection verification failed for data source: test
com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.MySQLNonTransientConnectionException:  Could not create connection to database server. Attempted reconnect 3  times. Giving up.
The root cause was that:  com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.MySQLNonTransientConnectionException:  Could not create connection to database server. Attempted reconnect 3  times. Giving up.

This happened on two servers.  One one, the cause was that skip-networking was turned on.  In the other situation, it appears that the database name was case sensitive, so TEST was not the same as test.  Even though I edited the data source in the CF administrator, it still didn't work (very misleading).  When a coworker entered a new data source with the same information (uppercase database name this time from the start), it worked.
Has anyone else seen this problem with the case sensitive database names?  And with the data source in CF not updating the case correctly?  Seems like a bug in CF.

  • What components of VM are lost after its migration from one physical host to another?

Hi, I found this post very helpful for me, it is very easy to understand about the live VM migration. I have a confusion regarding VM migration that if any
VM is migrated from one physical host to another what components of VM (vCPU, vBIOS, vRAM, vHD, vNIC, OS, Apps) will be changed?
Kindly help me to understand that:
1.Will Operating System running on VM be changed? 2. Will BIOS and Boot Loader information be changed?
Thanks Looking forward for your response.

Just to make sure we're talking about the same thing. We're talking about "live-migration" not VM conversion from one hypervisor to another, like a VM from VMWare or XenServer to a VM on Hyper-V, right?
As mentioned above, when a VM is
live-migrated from one Hyper-V host to another, nothing changes. Bios does not change. A
Gen1 VM with traditional BIOS firmware will not turn into a Gen2 machine with UEFI firmware for example.
Boot loader will not change when a VM is live-migrated from one Hyper-V host to another.
MAC address on VM NICs will change when a VM is live-migrated from one Hyper-V host to another, unless the VM NIC is configured with a static MAC address. A Changed MAC address will be interpreted by the VM as a new NIC, which will lose its old IP settings.
Stopping and restarting a VM on the same Hyper-V host changes nothing about the VM synthetic hardware such as NICs, BIOS firmware, or its internal startup files like boot loader.
Stopping a VM, and restarting it on another Hyper-V host changes nothing except the VM NIC's MAC address if it is configured to have a dynamic MAC address as described above.

  • Can't put my finger on what's wrong with iMac

    From the beginning:
My wife asked me to copy a couple scratched dvd-rs the other night.  The superdrive couldn't read one, but the other showed up on the desktop.  I tried to copy it and got an error that the iMac couldn't copy the disc.  Thinking it might just be a difficult disc to read, I tried again.  This time, the iMac seemed to lock up -- the superdrive revved up, then revved down s-l-o-w-l-y until it stopped.  The cursor was ineffective, and I had to hard reboot.
Upon reboot, not all my external drive images mounted.  I have three external drives, one fore iTunes, one for Pro Tools, and one for back up.  All three showed up, but only two of the three partitions of the backup mounted.  I entirely unplugged the iMac and all peripherals, reset the PRAM, and ran the quick Apple Hardware Test.  It showed nothing wrong, so I repaired permissions on all the disks and rebooted.  Still only two of the three partititions on the backup mounted, so I called LaCie.  They suspected a bad drive and sent out a replacement for my backup.
When the backup arrived, I hooked only that drive up to the iMac, partitioned it, and proceeded to back up my iMac internal drive to its destination partition using SuperDuper.  All seemed to be going well yesterday morning when I left for work, so I thought the problem was solved.  But when I got home, I got an error in SuperDuper (i took a screen shot if details are necessary) that there was an error copying the drive -- an error 5, input/output error.  I stopped SuperDuper and tried again, and it picked up where it left off for a half hour, then gave me a similar error.
I unplugged all drives and ran the extended Apple Hardware Test.  It was still running when I went to bed, but I woke to a message that there are no problems detected.
Any ideas what's going on here?  I had been noticing some pinwheeling in the past several months, but ONLY when I opened Mail and my PoP account took a while to load messages.  Do I have a bad drive?  Bad logic board?  Then why didn't the Hardware Test show it?  Or, do I just need to buy something like DiskWarrior to rebuild my main directory?
Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

I don't find AHT very trustworthy... unless it actually finds a problem, & it sure seems like some hardware problem.
Way too many console loggings I think.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode & see if we still get thise listings in Console...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • What is up with the iOS 6.1.3 not allowing me to charge my iPhone 5?

Does anyone else have this error when using ANY charging cable?
Charging not supported with this accessory.

Thanks Ralph. I did try that.  No luck.  The 10ft charging cable I have is not an Apple manufactured cable. It has worked perfectly fine for 3 months and only stopped charging after this update. I can still even use it to sync to my mac, it just won't charge.
The charging cable that came with the iPhone works fine.

  • What is wrong with itunes 11? it does not work

I have downloaded the latest version of itunes.
As soon as I start it it tries to download something called "Tap Paradise cove" and boasts a 43 hour download.  Nothing happens if I try to stop it.  No buttons on itunes work.  It seems to lock up up the entire pc and I have forcibly power it off to do anything.
I have tried to uninstall rand reload several times and the uninstaller doesn't seem to work.
How do I get rid of it and wait until this gets sorted out?
    Andy

iTunes in Windows is difficult to uninstall.
I found this for you in an older thread (read carefully before you start):
    Quote
    Resolution
Note that the following procedure involves a registry edit. Back up your registry prior to proceeding.
    (1) Do a complete uninstall of iTunes and related software components as per the instructions in the following document (but do not attempt to reinstall iTunes just yet):
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
    (2) Launch Regedit as an administrator. In your Start Search field, type regedit. Right-click on the Regedit entry that comes up and select "Run as administrator" as per the following screenshot:
    (3) In the left-hand pane of Regedit, click the triangle next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to expand its contents.
    (4) Expand the contents of SOFTWARE
    (5) Expand the contents of Microsoft
    (6) Expand the contents of Windows
    (7) Expand the contents of CurrentVersion
    (8) Expand the contents of Installer
    (9) Expand the contents of UserData
    (10) Expand the contents of S-1-5-18
    (11) Right-click on Components and select "Permissions" as per the following screenshot:
    (12) In the "Permissions for Components" screen that comes up, click the Advanced button:
    (13) In the "Advanced Security Settings for Components" screen that comes up, click the "Owner" tab.
    (14) In the "Owner" tab, check the "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects tickbox, select "Administrators" and click Apply:
(14a) If (after clicking Apply) you receive a "Registry Editor could not set owner on the key currently selected, or some of its subkeys" message, click OK:
    (15) Click OK in the "Advanced Security Settings for Components" screen.
    (16) Click OK in the "Permissions for Components" screen.
    (17) Quit out of Regedit.
    (18) Try installing iTunes using the latest version of the iTunes installer downloaded from the Apple website:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

  • What are the ways to Copy Firm Planned Order from one ASCP Plan to another?

We run two EDD Plans with very similar options, but with different plan horizons.
To have the suggestions synchronized, we need to copy the "Firm Planned Orders" from one plan to another.
We tried inserting the records in MSC_ST_SUPPLIES with Order type 5 and firm planned type 1 with appropriate plan id, but Planning ODS Load is not considering those inserted records.
We don't want to insert directly into MSC_SUPPLIES.
    Any inputs is appreciated.

You can also call a custom DTSX package in SSIS via the datamanager.
there are at least 5 ways of transfering data in BPC between apps.
    1. Through the front end (excel etc) via evdre/evsnds
    2. Through Script logic using *Dest App
    3. Using BPC's standard export dtsx package via DM
    4. Using SSIS using BPC's custom SSIS tasks
    5. Through Script logic using stored procs.
i am sure people will come up with more.
remember if you use ssis and move data into any table but the wb, you need to process the cube afterwards.
