What is the average speed for the fans? Mine seem really slow.

What is the average speed for the fans in a MacBook Pro? When my computer is fairly idle, like right now, the fans are at roughly 1000 rpm each. Is that normal? I have seen posts where the fans are 2500-5000 rpm, so mine seem a bit low. That may explain why my computer has been getting hotter more quickly lately - this started happening after Apple replaced my logic board a few days ago.

I installed smcFanControl2 and according to that program, Apple's defaults are 2,000RPMs and the program will not let you set it any lower than that because of the increased risk of damage.
My fans are always at 2,000RPMs during normal usage, and then once I fire up a DVD or Photoshop it usually goes up to the 3,000s or so.

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router. Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

  • The internet has been really slow since upgrading to lion.

Hi, just wondering if anyone has had issues with lion and the internet.  So far the internet is running really slow even though I have a new router and a high speed internet connection.  I was thinking it might be the ram because I only have 2 gb.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?

2 GB RAM is the minimum for running Lion - it prefers more; my Macbook now works better once I doubled it to 4 GB. If yours can handle more, I'd go for it.
You don't have your model in your profile, so I can only link you to the general site; you'll need to check which model identifier yours has:

  • My macbook works well while connected to the charger, but using the battery it gets really slow

My macbook pro 2011 yosemite 10.10.1, (2,3 GHz Intel Core i5 / 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 / Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB) recently started to present a problem that when using only the battery, it gets really slow, but connected to the charger, it operates normally. I have already taken to a technical assistance but was not presented any problem in the battery. And when I open activity monitor it shows that the kernel_task process uses almost 100% CPU and so is almost 0% idle, so it is almost impossible to use the computer (using the battery). Is there anything I can do to prevent this process using 100% CPU?

My recommendation for a SMC reset was initiated by your posts indication poor performance when under battery power.  Often a SMC reset will correct bad battery behavior but apparently not in your case.
Look at this article and see if there are any possible hints for correction of the problem:

If not, the the best option will be an Apple store genius bar appointment.

I believe my macbook pro hard drive is bad.  I erased the drive and reinstalled the OS and the macbook still runs really slow.  I dont know if the hard drive is the issue.

Did you try an SMC reset too? It's easily done and none of those resets to the best of my knowledge hurt anything. When I was fooling with my system, which at one point was a home made Fusion setup, I needed to reset the SMC sometimes to get the drives recognized. Reading the documentation the sudden motion sensor is drive related but that seems to be about it.
Some more specifics may be needed about the drive itself, the model number of your unit, and the OS version you're running.
At present, the problem seems sort of odd to me. FWIW cable problems can be quite intermittent. I used Scannerz to find some of the problems on my original system that I later converted to a new HD and SSD combo. It can find lots of problems if you learn how to use it right (HD problems, logic board system faults, and cable problems) but you need to get a system at least partially up and running to use it, and it doesn't sound to me like your there right now (in other words, don't go out and buy it because at this point I don't know how it could help you)
Another word of advice would be to not go out and start throwing parts at a problem unless you have a good idea what the source of the problem is. If you have a logic board problem, new drives and new cables won't make it go away, you'll just be wasting your money. Logic board problems, cable problems, and drive problems can all have very similar end user symptoms. The article that I linked above named "Hard Drive Problems" has a section on general symptoms of problems and if you read the article it becomes clear there's a lot of overlap associated with different types of problems.
I assume that your unit isn't under warranty. If, by chance it is I wouldn't even fool with it and I'd take it to Apple and let them deal with the problem. You also might want to check with whatever Apple sources you have available to test your system, like an Apple store, and see how much they'll charge (if anything) to evaluate the system.
    I certainly hope this helps.

  • What do the fans sound like

I came from a PC world and when the fans kicked in on those laptops you thought a plane might be taking off. My Macbook Pro is not hot and I do hear what I think are the fans on each side, more of a "whooshing" type sound. Is that what I should be hearing? Just not use to the relative quietness of this machine so wanted to check to be sure. Thanks in advance.

The fans have a very distinctive sound and they seldom ramp up. However, when they do begin to cut in, the sound is a very progressive spin-on that last about 30-seconds to full speed and they will generally run for about 1-minute and slowly spin down at the same rate. The whole process can last about 90-120 seconds.

  • What are the true min spec's for PRE7

I have been using PE7  with mixed results on my Sony 1.8 GH moble centrino laptop with 2 gig of memory running XP. When importing Jpeg video from a Sony flash memory camcorder the problem is centered around the low on memory issue. I seam to get this more frequent when editing in the native Jpeg format  (smaller file size) than if I convert to DVI( larger file size ) I'm not sure I get this. I am just doing standard def video for play back on a 42" plasma or 178" projection home theater. The footage looks great and the DVDs come out fine but the low memory problem gets to be a pain. I have considered moving to a mac as I'm just doing home videos in standard def  and would like to have the system be a lot more stable while doing the creative stuff (adding effects & teaking transitions ). The big reason I have not made the switch is I have been using Premiere for a long time and many versions and like being able to have many layers of video ( multiple tracks for effects and video layering ) and being able to pretty much do anything I can think of in ways of effects and transitions with graphics and effects layered over top of them. Sorry for the long winded description but my question is simple ( maybe ) what is the min spec for a laptop to produce standard def DVDs with respectable previews, stable operation and no low on memory errors. I would way rather stay with a PC and Premiere to produce my family videos as all the PC software I already own but would like to know how much of a laptop I would need to upgrade to to make PRE7 run clean. I know more is better but you can get a pretty respectable laptop for $700 and can easily spend up to $2000. Would like to be able to run PRE7 clean but would also like to be aimed more toward $700 than $2000.

will I have to live with some system house keeping and a few crashes or can I expect to run mostly clean ( no crashes ) with a Core Duo 2.0 ghz system with four gig of memory.
The biggest limitation that you will face is with your I/O sub-system, i.e. your HDD's. The rest should be fine.
What happens with most laptops is that they have one HDD. NLE work requires a lot of HDD access. When your OS (including the Page File) and the NLE needing to access the media files, plus the files that it writes to the Scratch Disks. All of this is happening at the same time, and something has to give. Something needs to come at the end of the line. If that happens to be the NLE, then it could well crash.
The first thing that I would do is clean out the Boot.ini and Startup w/ MSCONFIG to get rid of the "junk," that is not needed. Next, I'd turn off all AV, spyware sweepers and pop-up blockers. Last, I'd run a program like EndItAll2 to stop all other unnecessary Processes. Then, and only then, would I launch the NLE. During this time, I would refrain from anything involving the Internet, or my POP server, and would also not do things like use iTunes, etc. Remember, we shut down our AV and the other protective programs, plus programs like iTunes want to bring a lot of other applets along for the ride. The former exposes you to all sorts of problems (I do this, and I am behind a hardware firewall), the next just uses up resources. If you also want iTunes, buy an iPod to listen to, while editing.
Now, when I wanted a laptop to do editing, the first concern was for one that would allow me 3x SATA II HDD's. I managed to also get a Quad-core processor, and had to bargain to get a full 4GB of RAM and XP-Pro (the 4GB option was only available for Vista and I did not want that).
Now, on my laptop, editing to/from a FW-800 2TB external (so I can also take the Project to my workstation), I am editing an 8 hour epic in PrPro. While I do not use PE so much, I've done quite a few Projects, just for this forum. I've never had one crash and a few of those were over 2 hours of SD (DV-AVI Type II) footage. Never hiccuped, crashed, or even ran slow. I use PrPro most of the time, because it reminds me more of my cine days. PE4 (my version) is a bit too automated, and "prettied up," for this old guy. I'm also a control freak, and want to do everything pretty much by hand. I seldom like "big button" solutions, 'cause I want to do it frame by frame.
Also, I often have PrPro, PS, AI, Encore and a word processor open at the same time. With 3x HDD's and similar specs to yours (OK Quad vs Duo-core), I can do almost anything that I want. Still, without the bloatware and the other detritus.
Now, will PE7 work on your laptop w/ HD material? Much will depend on how clean your computer is, what the exact format of your HD footage and how patient you are with working with this.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Step by Step, what's the best way to shoot slow-mo in HD?

I've read so many articles on here about doing slow motion shooting in final cut but everyone of them left out some important details.
i wanted to see if anyone could give me a step by step on how the best way to shoot something in slow motion in HD would be?
i'm probably planning on just doing this in 720 instead of 1080, but i don't want that to begin to be the topic of discussion, just how how to do slow motion.
some things i want to know about it:
-what is a good shutter speed for this to make the movement look as smooth as possible
-how many frames per second should i shoot? (my camera only goes up to 60fps)
-should i use Cinema Tools in any way?
-any adjustments i might need to do to the timeline in final cut when i drop it in there?
-also, i'd want my whole project video to be done in 720/24p, but i'm guessing for the one shot i want in slow motion i'd have to shoot 720/60p. what do i need to do to get the 60fps footage to work right in a timeline set for 24fps?
if you can't answer all of them, just some help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

-what is a good shutter speed for this to make the movement look as smooth as possible< </div>
that's a tough call because the shutter speed will be determined by three things, your ability to understand what we tell you here, yoru photo subject, and the lighting conditions and ability to control them.
-how many frames per second should i shoot? (my camera only goes up to 60fps)< </div>
You can stop there, 60 is not nearly enough to achieve "smooth as possible" slow motion. You need at least 90 frames per second, 120 is even better, 180 is fabulous. You can research "overcranking," temporal resolution, and shooting slow motion for may hours on google.
Post processing a video clip using optical flow is not a viable solution for most subjects. You must consider renting a camera that will do the job properly. If 60 fps is all you're willing or able to shoot, then you must diminish your expectations and carefully consider your photo subject.

hi, I was surfing on the apple website and I saw something that is called ''mac mini'' but i didn't understand what does it do!!!

  • What does the Youview mini do??

    Hi
I've just signed up for Fibre optic BT Broadband with the BT sport package. Today I received a parcel containing my new Router and also a Youview mini box. I hadn't realised I would be getting the youview box and had assumed that by signing up to BT Sport I'd just receive an access code or something similar! As the Youview mini does not record does it do anything more than my existing Humax HDR Fox T2 does. If I connect the Humax to the BT router with the Ethernet cable will I be able to get BT Sport? I have an LG Smart TV so get plenty of extra services on that? Sorry if this sounds a bit basic but I'm just worried that connecting the Youview box will over complicate things.
    Thanks in advance
    Mattfb

If BT sent you the mini BT Youview box then that implies you have signed up to a BT TV Starter package (whether knowingly or not!). There are two versions.
TV Starter - Aimed at normal broadband customers. £4 per month, but with a £4 discount for the first 12 months.
TV Entertainment Starter - Aimed at Infinity fibre broadband customers. £5 per month.
You could check your order confirmation email and next bill to confirm whether you are subscribed to a BT TV Starter package.
The mini BT Youview box doesn't have the ability to record. Both Starter packages allow you to add the extra live BT Sport channels to BT TV if your broadband connection supports it. The TV Entertainment Starter also comes with 20 extra live entertainment channels on BT TV over the broadband connection. It also allows you to add other live channels at additional cost via bolt-ons.
These extra channels come over the broadband connection using a technology called multicasting. For many this is the primary purpose of subscribing to a Starter package and getting the mini BT Youview box. These extra live multicast channels over broadband are not available on your existing Humax box or smart TV, only BT TV boxes.
Both Starter packages also provide certain Youview / BT TV catch-up and on-demand services, depending on exactly which TV package and bolt-ons you are subscribed to.

  • What CPU should i buy for my Mac Mini 1.1?

    Hi,
I've bought my first ever Mac off eBay for a great price, only thing is it's an old Mac Mini and it probably is going to need upgrading. Although i've never had a Mac i've been upgrading PCs for years so i'm not necessarily new to getting my hands dirty. I've sourced a new hard drive for it as it only had 80gb and i've looked over many tutorials and videos on how to replace it and i'm feeling pretty confident on replacing it. Thing is though, I thought whilst i'm already opening the case to upgrade the hard drive should i upgrade the 1.66 ghz intel core duo CPU to an intel core 2 duo? I've look on eBay and saw quite a few, would this one fit?
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Intel-Core-2-Duo-SLB3P-T3400-2-16Ghz-1M-667-CPU-/22080 4297406?pt=UK_Motherboards_CPUs&ha...
If not, what about this one?
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140672958432&clk_rvr_id=303 473030963&mfe=sidebar#ht_500wt_1156
    Or even this one?
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270801235988&clk_rvr_id=303 471376395&mfe=sidebar#ht_535wt_1031
    What's the difference between them?
Don't really want to spend too much, but if I have to i'll wait a bit and save up some money. Do you think this is worth it? As the CPUs on eBay with the M socket are only £10-20 so I thought for that price it must be? Can you offer any other advice or tips?
This is my first post here and I am hoping you can help,
    Thanks in advance,
    Josh

Au contraire. The 1.1 mini certainly can take a CPU upgrade, but the process is certainly not for the faint of heart. Google will give you many examples.
