What is the best strategy for sharing iPhoto libraries between two macs?

I have an iMac and a new Airbook.  I want to keep my iMac as the"main" iPhoto location, but want to also keep copies of the photos on my Airbook.
I could copy the library from one to the other to get the photos into the Airbook initially, but then how would I get subsequent ones in there?  Is there a way to sync these two computers so that the photos flow from one to the other?  One-way syncing would be ok...
Thanks.
Oh - and I use MobileMe if that helps.

There is an application that can sync two iPhoto libraries.  It's SyncPhotos
Here's how it works:
1 - it compares the databases and/or album.xml files of Libraries A and B.
2 - the files in A that are not in B are imported into B by copying the original files from A into B's Import folder.
3 - it then does the same for B.
4 - metadata is not copied nor are Faces or Places.
It can be used to just copy from A to B and not sync both ways if desired. It will work with 2 libraries that are different versions, i.e. between an iPhoto 08 and iPhoto 09 library.
If you want to copy selected Events or Album from one to the other and keep the metadata, faces and places intact, you can use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager.  You would have to manually select the event/album to copy from A to B and do the same for B to A.

  • Best practices for sharing iPhoto libraries across multiple Macs

I have a pair of iMacs running 10.6.x. and iPhoto 11 connected via Ethernet to an Airport Extreme. I am looking for a way to share my iPhoto library between the two Macs.
I found an Apple Support note on the topic (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198) which states that a disk image is a supported location for a shared iPhoto library (with limitations acceptable to me) and it strikes me that this would be a way of hosting a shared iPhoto library onto a NAS device.
Am I missing a simpler solution or, more importantly, am I missing any blindingly obvious caveats? I'd love to hear from anybody who has tried this (successfully or otherwise) or anybody who has a better idea. I haven't bought a NAS device yet, so I'm open to alternative suggestions.
    Specific requirements:
Members of my family use either one of a pair of iMacs.
The only user who edits the iPhoto library is me and I only need read/write access from one machine.
iPhoto library access limited to one user at a time is acceptable and practical in my case.

    Easiest:
If the other users only get to see the Library then just use iPhoto Sharing.
Enable sharing in the iPhoto Preferences on the Host machine, then go to the other macgine and in the same location enable 'Look for Shared Libraries'
Other forms of sharing will give the users read/write access to the Library.
A strong warning: If you're trying to edit the Library (that is, make albums, move photos around, keyword, make books or slideshows etc.) or edit individual photos in it via Wireless be very careful. Dropouts are a common fact of wireless networking, and should one occur while the app is writing to the database then your Library will be damaged. Simply, I would not do this with my Libraries.

  • Sharing iPhoto libraries between two Macs

    Hi,
I've got a Mac mini set up in the living room on which I store videos, music and photos.
The photos are organized in iPhoto and arranged in 'Events' with the file name format being "YYYY MM eventname"
My wife would like to access those photos from her MacbookAir.
When sharing the iPhoto library, the photos come up in her iPhoto under 'shared' but all 25000 photos are in one big folder and no longer sorted the way they are on the Macmini.
Is there any way accessing the structure of the Mac Mini's Library via a sharing device?

Make Albums of those Events - which you can do just by dragging the Events to the Album heading in the left pane. Albums don't use any extra disk space.

What is the best way for sharing an iPad with 2 iPhones using different Apple acount ?

You can't share with other devices if you are using different Apple ID's and iTunes account on them. You can only share if you use the same ID.

  • What is the best method for moving iTune Libraries from Old to New Computer

    Hello,
Thanks in advance for any assistance you may offer.
My Sony Vaio Desktop recently died and untimely death, so I just purchased an HP Notebook. I was trying to wait out the release of the possible update of the Macbook line. However the old computer didn't agree. This HP will tie me over till a new release.
I've been doing weekly backups for over 3 years with a backup drive from Western Digital. At this point I just want to transfer my music in iTunes and applications from the App store that are loaded on to my iPod Touch into the new computer and then reauthorize and sync.
My question is what's the best method. Oh another problem I'm having includes the latest iPhone & iPod Touch software problem of 3rd party apps not working along with the vanishing of my music on the Touch.
Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Open up a fresh copy of iTunes. Point iTunes in the direction of your Western Digital Harddrive. Import Folders.
    1. New Copy
    2. Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> General -> Change -> <the address of the iTunes library on WD>
    3. File -> Add Folder to Library -> <Select iTunes folder on WD>
Always keep a backup of your iTunes Library file and the iTunes XML Document. If you have those, then it might be just as simple as copying those to your iTunes file folder. If you are not sure where they are, then do a search for iTunes.xml.

  • What is the best option for generating .wmv video working on Mac?

I am working on a mac. I need to generate my output in .wmv. I am exporting as .mov then using MacX converter to convert to .wmv. The quality degrades too much. What is the best way to generate .wmv?
    Thanks in advance.

YOur statement is way too generic and vague. You have not provided any exact settings,  version info, details about the footage etc. That asude WMV is a compressed format and wil always degrade.

  • What is the best strategy for wireless printing?

    Hi,
I just got an HP 6500A wireless all in one printer and have it connected by ethernet cable to our wireless router. My desktop running Vista Home Premium is also connected to the router. Printing from the desktop works fine. We also want to print wirelessly from a couple of Windows laptops, an iPhone and an iPad. I installed HP's Mobile E-print driver on the laptops and it works but I think the size limitation (5 mb) is a problem. I couldn't print a single page pdf, but a Word doc printed fine.
So, it looks like I could:
A: Connect the printer to the desktop by USB and share the printer on the network. Possible drawbacks - I think I'd have to leave the desktop on all the time and we haven't had much success sharing our old HP printer.
B: Install the printer on the network, via ethernet, and use the embedded web server. Then I guess I install the printer software on each computer?
C: Connect the printer wirelessly. Is this any different from option B other than not using a cable? The printer is located near the router and the desktop so the cable isn't a problem.
I know it may just come down to individual preference, but I'd be grateful for any advice as to which direction to go!
    Thanks.

A is not a great solution.  Printer sharing USB printers have so many downsides, some of which you described.  In addition, only printing can be shared, not scanning or faxing.
I like B the best.  Ethernet is superior to wireless if you can connect that way - no passwords, no interference and it is generally a faster interface.  Install the printer software on each computer (from the "Support & Drivers" link at the top of this page, not a CD).
C is OK, but only if you cannot connect by Ethernet.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • Best setup for sharing iphoto itunes between 3 accounts?

Changed my family PC for a Mac and am having a lot of sharing issues (in XP everyone could see and change each others stuff - bad security but good for family type stuff)
I have 1 admin account (mine), wife (not admin), kid (managed with parental controls)
I moved 5k+ photos, 10k+ songs to my account. I want to be able to have the wife and I be able to do anything to the photos and songs and the kid to only read the pic and songs. I also want all 3 to have the same playlists, etc.
Should I "share" my iphoto library and itunes folder or move them to public or move them to shared (not sure what the diff between public and shared is) or maybe I should have set up a Family account?

I've used the following technique with iTunes. It's not exactly what you describe, but it may start you down the right path.
    1) Make a separate partition for your sharing stuff. I call mine "Multimedia".
    2) Move your iTunes songs there using iTunes.
    3) Copy your iTunes directory from your Music directory there, I change the name to iTunesDB to prevent confusion.
    4) Delete your iTunes directory (after making a backup of course)
    5) Make a symbolic link using Terminal
    a) Start Utilities > Terminal
    b) Type "cd Music" to move to your Music folder
    c) Type "ln -s /Volumes/Multimedia/iTunesDB iTunes" where you put the name of your partition where I have the string "Multimedia".
You can control who can do what with access control. This severely restricts your kid, presumably what you want to do. If it were not for that, you could just turn off ownership in your Multimedia partition. Access control takes some maintenance in this setting.
You can use the "ln" command in Unix mode to do more powerful workarounds. I think that will be needed for iPhoto, who doesn't seem to like aliases or symbolic links. If you leave out the "-s" string you can make a "hard link" between two files. Such a link doesn't work for folders, but it is indistinguishable by all programs. If you use this to make two accounts share the same Library.iPhoto file, it will fool iPhoto. However, deleting the file, as iPhoto sometimes does after "upgrading" deletes both of them. As with all Unix stuff, use with caution and make sure you have backups.

  • What is the best practice for setting up and migrating two notebook users on one desktop

My wife and I have just purchased a desktop iMac and would like to migrate our 2 notebooks to it.  I plan to use the Migration Application to achieve this.  I am trying to gather information on the best ways to establish a main music library merging ours together, multiple photo libraries keeping ours apart and maintaining unique user log ins.  I'm sure alot of this stuff is may appear to be pretty straight forward setting up multiple users and all, yet we individually have never established multiple users on our personal notebooks, so there will be some bit of learning.  Any advice on the hang ups or tricks users have encountered would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Step one would be to the steps in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide and migrate your account, apps, and settings from your machine, using the Setup Assistant on first boot. Then, use the Migration Assistant to migrate your wife's account to the machine. That should carry over her photos and music. Merging those libraries should be detailed in the respective help files for iTunes and iPhoto. I don't share anything and only have one account, so I can't help with those details.

  • What is the best way to get a ratio between two waveforms?

I'm reading in multiple channels on a PCI 6143 and I want to get the Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR) between two channels. Right now I have a choice of outputting a 2D DBL or 1D waveform from the daqmx read vi. With the 2D DBL I can use a For Loop and an Index array and compare channels that way, but I was wondering if there is a better function to compare waveforms or even a function to calculate VSWR. Using the For Loop and Index array seems inefficient.

The PCI-6143 does sample all channels simultaneously (unlike some other DAQ boards), so you should not get any phase differences there. That leaves hardware. You need to make sure your cable lengths are the same and your splitter has the same impedance/path in both directions. You can compensate for splitter problems with cable length or software realignment. You can do a visual check of the waveforms to see if you have a problem. With the frequencies you are likely to measure with the 6143 (10s of kHz), you probably don't need to worry. This is usually only a problem at MHz frequencies.
You are correct that you do not want to use Express VIs in RT. However, you can use an Express VI to save you a lot of time. Set up the Express VI to do what you want to do, then open the front panel. Cut and paste the code from the block diagram to your RT code, then modify it to make it more efficient. This can often save you a lot of work.

  • What is the best way to share Address book between 5 Macs that are networked?

We have 5 Macs in the office, using 10.6.x or higher, and linked by a network. One Mac has the company database, and needs to be viewed and updated by the other users. What is the simplest way of doing this?

Oh, I meant Leopard does do more than Tiger Server.
I don't know enough about Server, even less abut Syncing.
SL is to new, not enough time to iron out the kinks yet imho.
One day SL will be better than Leo, but...

  • Syncing two iPhoto Libraries between two Macs

I'm looking for the best way of keeping my two iPhoto libraries on my two Macs synced at all times. Right now I'm doing this manually over my wireless network which is kind of time consuming...and I'm guessing there has to be an easier way of doing this on a Mac?
    Any good ideas? Thanks...

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Exactly what do you mean by sync? Do you mean one way copying? As in I organise and import pics on one machine only, and would like the changes visible on the other?
Or do you mean I want to import and organise on both machines, and have the changes reflected on either? You cannot do this. If you try and sync the database files they will be corrupted.
So a little more info might help us help you.

  • How do I share iPhoto libraries between two Macs?

Hi! I would ideally like to have one iPhoto library to share between two different Mac laptops. Is there some way I can set it up so that the same library can be shared, edited, and updated? Or if not, is there a way I can see the other Mac's iPhoto library? Both computers share the same Wifi and both using Mountain Lion OS (but I can upgrade if that would help).
    Thanks!

The only way to do what you want is to put the Library on an external disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Then connect - a wired usb/firewire/thunderbird  connection - the drive to each machine as required.
What you're describing is a media server. They start at the $200 mark.

  • Best solution to sync photo libraries between two macs?

I'm trying to help my father in law who has a new iMac, MacBook Pro, and dot mac/mobile me account. He wants the iPhoto library to be in sync on each machine. If he adds a new photo to one machine, he would like to see it on the other, and have his iPhoto album and preference settings match.
I've tried to accomplish this using iDisk syncing, but it really doesn't seem to work.
Is there a way to smoothly accomplish this via mobile me/dot mac?
If not, what third party application would anyone recommend?
Many thanks for any advice or help!
He's got about 7+GB in photos, and is using iPhoto '08 with two 10.5.4 Macs. I'd like to be able to sync to "the cloud", since he travels with the MacBook.

As Larry pointed out the only way to get two libraries to be the same is use iPLM to either merge the two libraries into one and then copy the merged library to the other Mac or just copy the Events from one library to the other and vice versa.
Trying to use a sync application will only damage both libraries, i.e putting photos in each library that the other's database file doesn't know about and maybe moving one database file to the other library which it's not associated with.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.
