You stumbled on a Mac Tower forum, not notebooks.
If you are running 10.6.8 then you must have bought it 3-4 yrs ago?
Might want to check the specs and then look at various programs and their requirements as to whether Final Cut Express and ah, you want to import media to an app, not "upload."

  • What is a good video editing software I can use on my MacBook Pro?

What is a good video editing software I can use on my MacBook Pro?
*also, It would be great if I could edit multi-channel audio on the software
    Any suggestions?

probably THE best software is Avid Media Composer. It's an industry standard for Feature Films, Television programs and commercials.
Professional editors and producers around the world have told them what the software needs to succeed.
-More efficient and easy-to-use video editing tools. An open platform that enables you to work with everything you want and integrate into any workflow. More power to eliminate bottlenecks, so you can work faster than ever.
-Create 5.1 and 7.1 surround mixes directly within Media Composer, or import from Pro Tools (watch the video)
I own this NLE and it truly is the best out of all of the editing programs I've used.
** It's quite expensive though. But worth it if you want the best!
    ~$2,499.00
Another option would be Final Cut Pro. The little brother of Avid MC. I have Final Cut Pro X and I am very disappointed with it. It’s not an update of the existing Final Cut, which is one of the most popular programs; it’s completely new and radically redesigned. It looks different, its strengths are different — "and after one day of using it, many professional video editors are running through the streets with pitchforks."
Final Cut Pro X Review - NY Times
** It's a good starting program if you just doing editing that isn't quite as demanding as feature films, TV programs and commercials. Many editors have been moving away from FCP after the release of the current version. However, It is a lot less expensive than Avid MC
    ~$299.99
Personally, having both Media Composer and Final Cut Pro X, I would go for Media Composer if it's in your budget. Definitely worth the price!

  • What is the best USB powered portable 1TB hard drive for a macbook pro that allows Time machine to work, windows (thru Parallels software) and mac storage and is available in Australia?

What is the best USB powered portable 1TB hard drive for a macbook pro that allows Time machine to work, windows (thru Parallels software) and mac storage and is available in Australia?

I agree with teh OWC sggestion above, but why must it be USB powered? I find that far more unreliable, and the low power devices slow.
I'd frankly get a good external enclosure and buy a bare drive.  But the OWC stuff is quite good - vastly better than some of the majors (WD being aprime example of stuff that's boderline quality and often not compatible)

  • What is the best video editing software for Mac?

I am trying to edit videos, specifically .wmv and .mpg files to put in PowerPoint presentations. What is the best software for cropping movies as well as cutting different scenes out of video (i.e. making a 2 minute video into a 30 second video). Thanks so much for the help.

iMovie will not edit WVM nor MPEG-1. You would need to convert the movies to one of the formats iMovie can accept before you could edit them. If you will need the movies to remain or end up in WMV or MPEG-1, I'd suggest looking to a different editor. StreamClip might work for just doing basic editing:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
To edit WMV you'll need the paid Flip4Mac plugin from Telestream:

  • What is the best Photo editing software with good organiser for a mac?

I have been using PSE9 on our PC and have just switched to using a mac so loaded PSE9 on that and have been discovering quite a few differences, limitations or basic functions just not there.
At the moment I'm very dissapointed because I had no idea that would be the case, I guess I just assumed it would be better than a pc. I'm obviously going to need to buy more editing software but don't want something for the same price but get less just because it's on a mac.
I do quite a bit of tweaking with PSE9, layers, actions (downloaded of the net), general tweaking, some fun funky stuff.
Need a better organiser than iphoto.
I would like to be able to batch process too which I can't currently do.
I can get the educational packages.
What would suit those needs best?

Yes that is what I'm saying.
Maybe I'm doing it wrong but I was on the phone to Apple for over an hour the other day and even the man on the phone was apologetic and said that no, it doesn't sort accoring to date taken.
My screen looks quite different to yours. I choose Finder/Pictures and then select the folders or sort. When I select the date created I get photo all out of order that I know I didn't take on those dates. It also shows me the files horizontally stacked to the right rather than a page view.
    I've included a screen shot.
Under the previous 7 days you will see a shot in black and white
You will also see it in colour under previous 30 days yet they were taken on the same day. I only have a few photos in the folders for the purpose of playing around with trying to work this all out but when I had hundreds of photos in there many were out of sync and I couldn't find them.
    I am used to seeing
    3/4/2012 (then all those photos)
    9/10/2012 (photos)
    4/12/2009 (photos)
etc.... all ordered all logical. If this can be done and I'm doing something wrong - I'll be so happy!
I really don't like how they all get stacked at one end. If I open a folder then they show me them unstacked which I prefer.

  • I currently have iPhoto on my new 27" 17, iMac. What is the best photo editing software. I have photo shop elements on my previous mac which I liked many features.

I currently have an imac 27", i7.  I have iphoto on this computer. What is the best photo editing software to purchase or download?
On my previouw mac I had Photo Shop Elenemts and Photoshop CS3. Both of the later had features that I liked.
I am an amatuer family photographer; What is the best photo editing software. I do not think I need the power and confusion of full version photoshop.

I take it you are looking for replacements for the apps you used on a previous Mac?
I do not have Photoshop Elements, so I do not know about compatibility. But this site will tell you:
    http://roaringapps.com
Photoshop CS3 does run in OS 10.9.1. (I use it just about everyday.) You do not have to give it up.
And there is Gimp, which is free and powerful.

  • What is the best photo editing software to replace aperture

Because Apple has decided to no longer develop Aperture, what are the best valued, most capable programs to replace Aperture?

Regarding the "ship shape" comment: you might want to look at some other products just to see how they would handle importing images. There is a lot of chatter on that subject for obvious reasons. What you don't want is all your info being stuck in a format that is difficult to retrieve.
First, consider referenced photos instead of the library. The managed library of Aperture/iPhoto is pretty unique to Apple. Sure, things like Lightroom's Aperture importer will copy those photos out for you, but it's a work around. If you have a photo structure in the Finder, it's always available no matter what you use, DAM or browser or just Spotlight.
Second, consider preserving your photo adjustments. Think of them as printed pictures. The adjustments (except really simple stuff like maybe crops, etc) do not carry over to other image managing  programs per se; the way to preserve those adjustments is to export the photo as adjusted, say in a TIFF. That's what you may have noticed that plugins like Nik do: they don't pass adjustment INFO to Aperture, they pass an exported photo. Consider a workflow that does the same. Even if the new Apple products or whatever comes next is what you wanna use, it may be useful to have these. Some of the cool adjustments demo'd in Photos might translate exactly from your Aperture info, but maybe not. You might have to start anew, and having at least an exemplar might be nice.
Third, make your photos application independent by writing in metadata. The cool thing about image files is that even your garage door opener can probably open them. They are really universal. AND so is the exif/IPTC/XMP metadata within those files or sidecars. So write it in there. You can replicate a whole Project/folder/album or collection set/collection just using heirarchical keywords. And another cool thing is that this info is available in the Finder, in other operating systems, and with searches via Spotlight. It's tremendously powerful and many Aperture and Lightroom users, who often are solo users, don't make enough use of it. Those who worked with other people/departments etc probably use this more often; Photo Mechanic is the epitome of this. Metadata in photos is far more powerful than even tags in the operating system; it's like a DAM grafted into your files.

  • What is the "best" video format to import into Aftereffects (for keylight plugin)

    Hello All,
    I
have various choices in Adobe Premiere (CS4) for exporting.
The top choices seem to be
    Microsoft AVI
Avi uncompressed (this i assume is much better than just Microsoft AVI -- for greencreen keylight work?)
    And Quicktime.
So I assume my best choices would be Quicktime or AVI Uncompressed.
Any reason to choose Quicktime over AVI uncompressed?  Or visa versa?
    Thanks
    Rowby

The best starts with the camera and recording system. Any system that gives you 4:2:2 color at 10 bit as original at a high data rate is best. Well almost best. Best is 4:4:4 color at 32bit, but you must have a pile of cash to capture this way.
The worst modern acquisition formats are the mpeg systems used by phones and some digital still cameras. For cameras that independent film makers can afford, let's say under $10K, I'd say that the best, meaning highest color depth and least compression goes something like this. There may be some room for debate on the order of the  Panasonic and Sony P2/XDCAM but the new AVC-Intra format is, for now, at the top:
Panasonic AVC-Intra (the replacement for P2)
Sony XDCAM and HDCAM SR (new generation)
    Panasonic P2 DVCPRO
    HDV
    DVC Pro 100 SD
    DVC Pro 50 SD
AVCHD (though this is a HD format I've put it below sd formats because of compression)
    DV
I've left off analogue formats because they require specialized capture cards. I also left off the Red and the Canon and Nikon still cameras that capture HD because the Red is too expensive for the list and the still cameras use a compression scheme that I haven't played with yet. I think that the Canon 5D Mark II may produce footage that will key quite well but don't know where to put it in the list.
Once you have the original footage you can either work with the native formats or transcode to your favorite lossless format. I prefer Animation Codec Quicktime because it is universally available to and simple to transfer between platforms. Also good are sequential tiff or even png formats. Many folks use jpg compressed Quicktimes. I don't know many pros that use avi's because uncompressed are so huge and the compressed avi's are pretty messy.
For the production pipeline to keep working you almost always have to stray from the native codecs because they do not support alpha channels. If you choose to work with P2 (MXF) files, which AE CS4 handles just fine, then you will have to render to a codec that supports alpha channels or render separate alpha channels to bring your footage into a NLE or Flash and with transparency preserved.
I hope that answers your question. You can't easily fix a poor quality original by simply transcoding to a lossless format.

  • What are the best low cost web cams to use with a Macbook Pro?

I want to use both the Mac internal camera and a remote camera for teaching on Skype and I am therefore looking for the best solution for me - any help out there?

For Skype use, see Skype Help starting at https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA603/which-webcams-and-headsets-will-work-with -skype?q=webcam. In general, webcams from http://www.mac-compatible-web-cam.com that meets your budget limits will work.
I suggest a USB (versus Firewire) cam.  Don't install any software that comes with it (all necessary software is included in Mac OS X 10.4.9 and later), and it should work with your Mac.
When your Mac recognizes more than one connected camera, most camera-capable applications have settings that allow you to choose which camera to use. However, they do not all work the same way.  (In most apps, the selector choices do not show if you do not have more than one camera.)
To switch Skype between your inbuilt and external webcams, select the camera you want in the "Camera" choices bar of Skype Audio/Video Preferences as shown in this image:
These previous threads contain some general information on how to select between connected camera in some other camera apps:

  • What is the best solution to watch cable TV wirelessly on my MacBook Pro?

Hi all. I know this isn't a direct AppleTV question but I thought I may find a solution in this forum.
I just purchased a MacBook Pro and I want to watch cable TV wirelessly. I have an old Formac Studio TVR thats held up pretty well over the years which I have hooked up via FireWire to my PowerMac.
    I have...
    -Comcast Cable Box w/DVR
    -Formac TVR
    -Netgear WPN824 v2 Router (ethernet 10/100 only)
-MacBook Pro (core 2 duo 2.4ghz)
I'm open to purchasing new items but I want to hear what solution works best before doing so. I've seen some specs on Slingbox but I wonder if Apple has or is working on a solution.
    thanks in advance.

I have the $149 Slingbox Solo. It connects directly to my Digital Cable box/DVR. You can watch it on a wired or wireless connection. Quality varies according to the speed of the connection. On a local network, the quality is actually excellent. You control the box by an on-screen remote control. As note by others, you can watch remotely from anywhere with an internet connection. It works very well with my Mac as well as various laptops (MacBook pro and a Sony Viao). I also have an Elgato and a Miglia tuner - neither of which can do anything wirelessly. The Slingbox does take control of the cable box. Overall, I am very impressed with the Slingbox and would highly recommend it.

  • What is the best photo editing software for newbies

Would you recommend Photoshop elements for a newbie to Apple platform.
Have editing background but not very proficient in Photoshop.

iPhoto, which actually comes free with your Mac, does some basic, yet powerful things in photo editing.
I recommend Aperture because it does two things very well. First, it's like iPhoto in that it organizes photos, which is a separate App when you enter the Adobe ecosystem.
The second thing is that Aperture is extremely powerful in editing photos. But more than that you can purchase even more powerful plug-ins that have Photoshop counterparts. In other words, you can grow with Aperture from powerful photo editing/organizing tool. And as you need to get into other things like HDR editing, you can buy plug ins from photo software developers like Nik Software.
I'm a huge fan of Aperture, and I've done some cool things with it. There are huge philosophical debates between how Aperture deals with editing imaging and how the Photoshop world does, but you're a "newbie", so Aperture may be your best start in life. It's very Mac-centric. Apple supports it. And frankly, the support community here is probably one of the most vibrant on all of Apple (other than the film editing ones).

  • What are the best video effects or presets to use for HD video?

I use Premiere Pro often, usually to direct music videos of different genres. I used CS6 for a while, until just now upgrading to Creative Cloud.
Anyway, I just want people's suggestions on what effects, presets, or anything to use to make video look good!
The video I use it 1080p HD, but I know there's ways to make it look even better than it already does, please give me any suggestions you have! thank you!

No rules or limits to what one would use to make something "look good".
Different FX and treatments  in different hands on different material...too many too list.
Start with great images, great performance and direction...and Color Correction.
Craft the film as to how you saw it before you shot it.
    Dont use others presets.

  • What is the best free anti-virus download to use on my MacBook Pro?

I'm worried that whatever Apple has built into the computer is not enough security. Is there a free anti-virus download for Macs? Do they do the job or do I have to spend money on something better? The download would need to identify and fix the problems. I mostly email, search the internet, sometimes buy things, download Kindle books, do my banking, etc. I would really not want to spend any money if it's not needed. Thanks.

  • What is the latest version of Safari I can use on a MacBook Pro?

I am attempting to take an online course and the site states that it does not support old versions of Safari; my version is 5.1.10. I'm not sure what to update to.
    Thanks

    Hi seitusink,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
The latest version of Safari on Mac OS X 10.6.8 would be 5.1.10. To get a newer version of Safari, you may want to consider updating your operating system. Mac OS X 10.9 is available as a free download from the App Store if your computer meets the System Requirements.
The first article attached here shows the System Requirements for Safari while running Snow Leopard.
