What is the best way to manage itunes content using an external hard drive connected to airport extreme?

Just a little history on what I've already tried. I have my itunes folder on my external hard drive with an alias linking to my macbook pro. My hard drive is networked from airport extreme. Streaming content is not a problem. Syncing my iphone is the problem. I just get the pinwheel and a message stating sync unsuccessful because itunes was unable to connect. It takes a very long time to change any settings in itunes for mu phone.I have 8g of ram so that shouldn't be a problem. Any help would be appricated.

The best solution would be two different types of backups, one local (in your own home) and one elsewhere. So, option 3 is the "best" solution.
I, personally, use Crashplan to backup all of my computers because it's much more convenient than an external hard drive.
With an external hard drive, you can either use Time Machine to create the historical/incremental backups OR you can create a bootable clone periodically using SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner.
I don't know of any way to make the machines mirror images of one another - as far as I know, the best you could do is transfer data from one to the other at time of purchase and then use something like DropBox to keep files in sync.

I attached the UltraMax Plus with a USB cable. The UltraMax powers the cable so power is not an issue. I can open other files. Also, there is 500GB of files on the drive so I cannot re-format it. Although, I noted I could import the entire Aperture Library. However, I do not want to create a duplicate on my machine because that would be defeating the purpose of the external drive.

I have a MacBook Pro and recently removed my optical drive and replaced it with an internal hard drive so that I can have more storage. My iTunes library is on the original hard drive. I am getting close to running out of space on the original hard drive and would like to move my library to the new internal hard drive. What is the best way to do this? Thanks.

A re-iteration of what I posted earlier... If you let iTunes manage your music for you then copy the whole iTunes folder and everything it contains to the other drive. Hold down the option key at the same time as starting iTunes. It will present you with a window, one of the options being to open a different iTunes library. Navigate to the iTunes folder on the other drive and let it open the library.itl file in the folder there. In all likelihood it should open it with no problem and you will not see any difference between when you had it on your first internal drive. If you get info on a track and look at summary you will see it is now referencing media on the other drive.

Just bought a new LaCie 1.5 Terabyte external hard drive to back-up all my photos. What's the easiest way to copy my iPhoto library?
Also is there a way to copy an entire "event" in iphoto and paste these events into subfolders on my external drive?
I am trying to create a system of subfolders on my hard drive that groups some events together instead of copying my entire library into one folder.
I tried the "drag and drop" way, but found that sometimes when I let go of the mouse button over the appropriate folder they would somehow miss the folder and end up pasted on-top of the folder instead of inside the folder.
Or, am I just wasting my time with the subfolder thing? Is it better to just transfer the entire library to one folder on the external drive? ... since it's only for back-up purposes anyway.

The best way, IMO, is to copy the iPhoto LIbrary package intact to the external HD. That will backup all your photos, edits, books, slideshows, etc.
To keep the backup copy current use a backup application like Synk or Synk Pro which is capable of making incremental backups, i.e. backing up only those new or changed files.

I'm helping someone setup a backup routine on their laptop, and would like to include her Firefox bookmarks. With IE, I normally move my favorites folder under My Documents, so when I backup the My Documents folders I always have my favorites. I wasn unable to find a similar ability with Firefox, so I wasn't sure how to go about backup her bookmarks. My preferred option would be do to something similar with Firefox (i.e., move bookmarks), but since that doens't seem feasible, I'd like to know what specific folder I need to add to my backup routine to backup the bookmarks. Thanks for the quick response. Let me clarify my question. I want to be able to configure my backup software to access and backup Firefox bookmarks. I would normally do this by telling the backup software which folder to add to the backup. My preference is to use the actual (current) bookmarks, rather than a backup, but if I have to create a backup in order to do this, I guess I'll do that.

If you have created a new Windows user account you need to log out and then log back in with your original user name. By default each Windows profile will have an independent iTunes library.
If instead you managed to create a new library within the same profile. click the icon to start iTunes and immediately press and hold down the shift key, keep holding until asked to create or choose a library. Click Choose and navigte back to your original which should be at <User's Music>\iTunes.

I've completed & burned some good looking 8+ hour dual layer dvd's = Fantastic Software! I love the menu's. Now, to clean up My files & Hard Drive for more space, what should I do? If I delete all the CAObjectsTrackResults & Or The PE8 Auto-Save files named I know I don't want, what would happen? Would that delete what I want to save? If I Delete only the files I named & I don't want would that clear up space? There is a very long list in the CAObjectTrack of named copied & unnamed VTS_01_????. Is it ok to delete those extra named copied files? I've deleted all the files on my C: & desktop for more space that I can see and want deleted. Is that all I can do for more space because I loaded or copied over 40 hours of video. What other folder are the files in on the C: or PE8?

It all depends on what you might wish to do in the future. If you are totally done with your Project, and will never revisit it, or use the Assets from it in other Projects, then you can just use Windows Explorer to just Delete them all.
One can use the Project Archiver to store the Projects on, say an external, in case one later wishes to revisit it.
I only work with either Copies of my Assets (stored on an NAS), or in the case of Captured material, I retain the original miniDV tapes, so I can just Delete the root folder of a Project, and clear things out, if I know I'll never revisit that Project.
If you wish to clean up a Project, but keep it around, then you can Delete all Render files, the CFA & PEK files, and your Burn to Folder VIDEO_TS folders. Those can either be recreated (the CFA & PEK will be done so automatically), or created again, with another Burn to Folder.
Hope that helps, and for more complex answers, you need to look into your "crystal ball" a bit, and let us know whether you will ever need an Asset, or revisit that Project again.

I have acquired more music on an external hard drive than will fit on my computer or my iPod. I am looking to transfer my iTunes library to the external drive. Will I be able to add purchases or rip more cds to the hard drive without incident? Using the external should not present problems, but some specifics lie in details of your external drive. The main thing will be the external will need to always be on when you use iTunes (if it isn't already).
I know zero about your sound dock so I have no idea what it is capable of. Can it play files on, say, a flash drive? If so it may be able to use an external drive but likely it will need to be a non-Mac format. you can consider that for your drive but it may present problems in the details as I indicated above. I won't go into it until I know more about your setup.

I have a macbook 4.1 with 4gb ram running lion. I have a 3 tb external drive that i use for time machine bakcups and a partition for my itunes library. When I want to watch a movie I connect the external hard drive to my macbook, open itunes and airplay it to my apple tv. However, this solution is not optimal because I lose the use of my macbook when it has to be connected via usb to my hard drive.
What I want to do is be able to watch a movie on my apple tv via my external hard drive wirelessly.
I realize that hooking up an airport extreme to a harddrive for time capsule purposes is not supported and thats fine.
However, will this work for the purpose of airplaying itunes library to apple tv.
Also would this work with most other wireless routers that support external hard drives? Not asking for specifics here, because i know no one can know every device. But is there any technical problem that would prevent it.

Yea I'm just going to wait for a solution I like better. The easiest way would be for apple to have some kind of itunes server software. Theres no reason that my computer running itunes shouldn't be able to communicate with with hard drive wirelessly just as it would with a usb cable. Kind of like wireless itunes synching with my iphone.
I don't want to use Itunes match because music is not my concern. It is the 1,000 movies that I want to watch on apple tv without tying up my laptop.

I have just purchased an imac which I am very happy with. In our household we also have two iphones (one mine and one husbands) and one ipod (my sons). We all have individual itunes accounts set up on our previous computer (not a mac). We have sepereate apps and music, although there may be the odd occasion where we would like to share a song (if this is possible) across devices.
I am just wondering the best way to manage these devices using the new imac. Should I create individual accounts to logon to the imac, then from within these launch our own itunes accounts and sync our devices with these. Or should I be using one version of itunes, logging on to this with our different itunes usernames and storing things in libraries.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Though I'm no copyright lawyer, as long as it's within a household, you can share content among users. Such sharing is, absent specific language preventing it not present in the iTunes Store terms of use, generally considered to be "personal use". So you can share apps and music amongst your users on your computer and with their devices. You just can't give any of that content to friends or relatives who don't live with you.
What I am not clear on, it making sure that this appears in each itunes account - is it easy to find the file storage folders that match the itunes accounts and what would these be?

iTunes is straight forward, just use the same ID on all of them.
What exactly do you want to see in messages on the Mac and iPad, messages combined from each of your phones or a different account just for both of you.
You should think about what you want in calendars, contacts etc, on your shared devices.

With so many cloud based and wireless syncing services, I'm lost as to the simplest way to keep photos sync'd as well as backed up. My dropbox is currently syncing all photos I take with my iphone, but in an overall folder called CAMERA UPLOADS, so they are uncategorized. I upload pics to facebook, which facebook also has a sync photos feature, but I don't necessarily want all photos uploaded to facebook. What has worked best for everyone so that there aren't a ton of dupicate photos everywhere, and multiple syncs of the same photos?
Also, what is the best way to manage my iPhone photos generally? I'm never sure if I delete a photo from my phone, does it delete it on my computer via iCloud? Sometimes I just take a picture to send to a friend that I don't need to keep, while others are ones I want to sync to my computer. Can I control when deleting that it be deleted everywhere or just on the device? And alternately, can I choose certain photos not to sync via iCloud?
iCloud makes me nervous. Once when I wanted to place all photos of my pup into a folder, I selected the photos on my iPhone and accidentally clicked delete instead of move. No big deal, I figured they'd be at home sync'd on the cloud. But since I'd deleted them on my phone, the cloud deleted them on my home computer too and the photos were lost.
