What is the best way to start "fresh" with iPhoto '08?

I am running iPhoto '08 on a mid-2007 iMac. When I set up the machine, I moved all the photos from my PC to the Mac retaining the existing directory structure that I had on the PC. I then imported all the pictures into iPhoto with no problems.
Unfortunately, the other person who uses the Mac needs to be able to use the directory structure as it existed on the PC (that structure involves several subfolders with specific names etc.), and it appears that iPhoto is not designed to work that way. I know the photos can still be manipulated in the folders I imported, but then I run the risk of at best, being out of synch with iPhoto and at worst, corrupting iPhoto completely.
That said, what I would like to do is delete or remove the current iPhoto library (or whatever iPhoto accesses; not the whole application unless necessary) and then selectively import photos to iPhoto. That way, the other user can access the photos in the familiar folder structure and manipulate them at will without disturbing the iPhoto db and, once photos are edited etc. and ready for primetime, they can be imported to iPhoto to gain the advantages of displaying using Front Row etc.
My question is what is the best way to achieve what I am looking for? Just backup then delete the iPhoto pkg file in the HD/Library/Receipts folder? Uninstall the entire application and start over?
All assistance greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
You don't need to re-install iPhoto, just change the library - and you may not even need to do that.
1. You can easily recreate your Directory structure in iPhoto. Simply start at the bottom of your structure and drag a folder of images to the Source (or left hand) pane of the iPhoto Window. iPhoto will create an Album of the same name. The create your enclosing folders (File -> New Folder) and drag the albums to it. This way you can quickly recreate what you have/
2. The other user of the files can access them directly via the iPhoto Window or a Media Browser such as THIS. The advantage of this system is that your directory structure is available to them ina convenient and recognisable way. They can then drag the pics from the iPhoto Window / Media Browser to the app they as the need. (A whole lot faster than fumbling around in Folder after Folder etc, plus the advantage of keyword searching.)
3. Is this necessary for working with an editor? You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. Btw this is the only way that edits made in iPhoto will be visible in iPhoto.
4. Finally, if you do wish to go as you described: Simply trash the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder. Start iPhoto and it will create an new empty library. If you wish to recover the files from the Library first, then Right Click on the iPhoto Library and go 'Show Package Contents'. Your files are in the Originals Folder.

What is the best way to stream sports with apple TV

Your question is a little too broad. Hard to know what sports you are talking about.
If you have a newer Mac, you can use airplay to mirror anything on your Mac to your apple tv. Or use the ESPN app.
But a lot of sports just can't be streamed as they are available, though I bet this year sees a lot of new livestreams on sports on YouTube or Ustream.

What are the best ways to share photos from iPhoto?

If you use Adobe Photoshop, or even Adobe Photoshop Elements, stay as far away from iPhoto as possible.
iPhoto does not play nice with Adobe software or with software from any other third party developer.
iPhoto will hide your image files in a library paradigm where you have no access to them other than through iPhoto.

What's the best way to connect Cognos with SAP so that data could be extracted from SAP and create reports with Cognos.

DB2 Connect version 8.2 is no longer supported by IBM (support ended April 30, 2009, see http://www.ibm.com/software/data/support/lifecycle/). As far as I know, DB2 Connect is communicating through DRDA, which is a platform-independent protocol supported by all DB2 platforms, so any DB2 Connect client should be able to talk to any DB2 database. However, there may be limitations on the supported release combinations.

  • What is the best way to start SAPGUI in a specific transaction

    Hello,
What I'm trying to do is to run a Java program that will start SAPGUI (in windows format, not HTML) and present the user with a specific transaction with some data already inserted.
I already managed to start the SAPGUI and I know how to fill in data using the SapJCo but my question is: what is the best way to navigate to a specific transaction? I can activate an RFC of BAPI_CALL_TRANSACTION but it seems like a big overhead. so, can any of you tell me what is the best way activate a specific transaction in SAPGUI using JCo?
    Thanks,
    Uri Lifshitz.

    Uri
JCO are mostly used to executed a RFM on the Destination.
I don't think we could call a Transaction using JCO.
    Thanks

  • What is the best way to import photos from iPhoto 9 into PSE 11?

I just installed PSE 11 and I would like to move the pictures from my iPhoto 9 Library in to PSE 11.
What is the best way to accomplish this as far as accuracy of data?
    Thank you!
    Len

There is a direct option in Organizer which lets you import from iPhoto. This is under Import dropdown menu in left panel.
If you are importing from iPhoto'09, your Tags, Albums Events, captions, star rating would also get imported apart from your media. This works differently for iPhoto'011 where you can get only the media to the Organizer,
Just a couple of things to know:
    1. If in iPhoto preferences, you have chosen to create copies of your photos in iPhoto library and your library hence refers to the media store inside the library package, then on importing from iPhoto, Organizer would create copies of all those media under your pictures folder. That means, it would not corrupt your iPhoto package or modify it in any way.
    2. However, if in iPhoto, you are organizing by using references to original location on your Hard drive i.e. you are not creating copies of media in iPhoto library then on importing from iPhoto to Organizer, the Organizer would also use the same references and would not create copies of the media.
    Hope that helps!

I have about 5k pictures in the kodak easyshare software system on a dell laptop - what is the best way to transfer or import them into iPhoto on my iMac ? any help will be greatly appreciated...

Simply, export the data from this esy share system to standard formats like jpeg, making sure to preserve all metadata on the way. How to do that? YOu'll need to post on a Kodak forum I'm afraid.
Then copy the files to the Mac and import them.

  • What is the best way to sync contacts with a webdav host?

I'm using Thunderbird and Android Contacts as client apps along with a owncloud 8 hosted remotely. I've activated the Contacts app on Owncloud and now I want to sync the contacts between all of these systems. What is the best way to do this?
I'm trying to get Thunderbird sorted first. I've tried Addressbooks Synchronizer but this currently gives me either a message telling me that my credentials are wrong or sits silently doing nothing. I'm aware that this is a file sync, not record sync method, so it isn't ideal anyway.
Is there a better, proper sync, method that I can use? I refuse to thing that this is an unreasonable request or that no one has asked it before me, but I just can't seem to find the answer.

  • What's the best way to start this dashboard?

I have a data set of titles, gender, race, and disability.
I would like to create a dashboard that will be visually appealing to the end user that relies on this information.
What would be the best way to visually represent the gender, race, and disability for each title?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Zack
Start with a blank piece of paper and draw out what you think will look ok in terms of the relationships between the data sets you have and a basic structure on areas for controls and areas for visualisations.   Then create this mock up using tables/charts etc.  Try to select charts which fit the data you have, see [here|http://media.juiceanalytics.com/downloads/graphselectionmatrix_sfew.pdf]
Take it to your user group and discuss, and enjoy the many iterations that follow

  • What is the best way to import pictures from iPhoto without compression?

I'm trying to create a slide show using Final Cut Pro. No, I'm not interested in using iDVD slide show function because it doesn't allow me to do a whole lot. I would like to add titles and music for certain segments with video inserted here and there.
Anyway, when I used the slide show function in iPhoto, exported it out as a quick movie file, and then imported it into Final Cut Pro, I noticed a significant downgrade in quality of images. It obviously looks different from when I play the slide show in iPhoto. What would be the best way to import pictures into Final Cut Pro without any compression?
    Thanks in advance.

I only see Share > Export.
Some versions of iPhoto work that way -it's just Apple moving things around.
what's the difference between exporting it from iPhoto then import it into FCP vs. just importing directly from FCP?
Your first post mentioned exporting a slide show from iPhoto -I assumed that is where your images are stored.
I do not want to import pictures one by one...
You don't have to. iPhoto will let you select as many as you want, or if the images are elsewhere, you can also select multiple files from FCP's Import dialog.
    ...and stick them together manually.
Editing is an art and involves some effort on your part. It is not an automated process. This method opens up far more possibilities, access to filters and color correction and the opportunity to use Motion for even more sophisticated animation.
But, it only allows me to export it as 720 x 480. The original size of my photos is 3872 x 2592. Is there any way I can create a quicktime file in the original size?
You should be aware that 3872 x 2592 is not a standard pixel aspect ratio that is used in video. The images will be resized to the Sequence settings that you set up in Final Cut Pro.
I have never used iPhoto to make a slideshow before, but I just gave it a try and was able to export one with the images in their native size, simply by typing the pixel dimensions into the boxes in the dialog window:
I don't have PhotoMagico myself, but it comes highly recommended by several of the forum regulars.
Perhaps one of them will see this discussion and help with your last question.

  • What is the best way to organize photos? iPhoto or Aperture?

I am a mom taking tons of photos of my young children. On my old PC I used to organize everything within "My Pictures" by Month & Year (May 2008). I am a very organized, linear person and don't like to change the way I do things midstream so I am having a hard time figuring out how to organize our family photos now that I have switched to a Mac with iPhoto and Aperture. In the future I hope to learn about Aperture's professional tools (which as a mom & not a professional photographer I currently do not use). I would love to take photography classes at a local community college someday...
    My questions are as follows:
    1) What is the better way for ME to store our photos? Should I be uploading to iPhoto or Aperture? I basically want all of my "master photo images" in the same location in an organized fashion. I am hoping to do this without clogging up my computer. At this point I am thinking at the end of each year I will burn the year's photos to a disk for save keeping. But until then...
    2) Is the "library" the over-arching place where all photos are stored? In general, I am having a hard time following the hierarchy of where my photos are being stored, how to organize them and how to completely delete bad photos.
    3) Can I do everything I can do in iPhoto in Aperture? Obviously I know I can do more but is it as easy to edit/fix up photos?
I have listened to/watched several tutorials on both programs and have read through many other folks' questions/answers but I am still not sure of what to do.
I really appreciate any help/advice anyone is willing to give!
    Thanks!

I'm not a professional either, just a grandma with a love of digital photography who takes lots of photos. We used to live in a motorhome full time, so we had lots of opportunities to take many photos.
I personally like Aperture better than iPhoto because I like to use some of the NIK software/plugins where I can do the adjusting right in Aperture and don't always have to send the photos to PhotoShop. Also you have a bit more flexibility as to file set ups with Aperture. In iPhoto you don't have as many nesting capabilities. iPhoto is great, but pretty basic.
I had my photos set up as files on the PC, long before I got my first Mac. So I set them up the same way. I'll try to explain
    In Finder:
Pictures (in side bar on left in Finder)
    Folder - My Photos
    2nd Folder - by year
In the year folder I have a folder by date ie: 20000722 (year, month, date) and the photos from that date in there.
Once I got to using Aperture, I have my years set up as "projects" and the dates set up as "Albums". When importing the whole set of photos into Aperture, it was easy. I highlighted the "library", then did a right mouse click and selected "import folders as projects". That imported the photos into Aperture the same way I have them in finder.
Once everything is in Aperture, and you have new photos to add, I make an album under the corresponding year and import.
I do all my photos as referenced and don't duplicate them again, as I have them backed up in a couple of other places.
IMHO you can't back up enough! Don't wait and do it only once a year! Hard drives have a way of crashing and you'll loose all your photos. Use DVD's, thumb drives, ext. hard drives or what ever works for you. But always back up.
When I take my photos off of the memory card, I immediately send a copy to the back up external HD. Once the photos are adjusted etc. I make sure I have a copy elsewhere too. Only then do I erase them off of the memory card. Might be a bit redundant, but I'm not about to loose any of my photos. When we lived in the motorhome we were always aware of the possibility of theft or fire. So I got in the habit of taking some time to reduce the size of the photos and keep them on a thumb drive that I kept out of the RV. If anyone broke in or we had a fire, I'd still have the photos. Maybe not the originals or the bigger size, but we wouldn't loose them either.
If you want more info on non professional filing, send me a PM and I can send you a photo of my file hierarchy . (suemach (at) mac (dot) com)

  • What is the best way to setup iTunes with my current configuration?

I currently have an iPhone 5 and a new iPad. My wife has the iPhone 4S. I do all the syncs (even my wifes) on the same Windows 7 machine. She has a different apple ID than I do and I share one apple ID accross my iPhone and iPad.
I have a Windows Home Server 2011 box that stores all my photos and music files. I am able to connect to the box from the Windows 7 machine without issue. I have several media diretories. One of the directories contains all my iTunes music and another seperate directory contains all my photos.
Here is the question. If I want to sync my iPhone 5 and my new iPad so that I download all the music files and photos how should I setup iTunes? How should I sync my wifes iPhone so she gets all the Photos and music files? One of my chief concern is being able to automatically sync apps and  "new" photos taken from either phone back to my file server photo directory.

Migration Assistant is the best way to get everything.
